Unfortunately, this was Fred Gwynne's (Judge Haller) last movie. He died shortly after this release. He was one of the best in this, such a commanding presence.
@@TBRSchmitt It's funny but many people think she didn't actually win. They think that the wrong name was read and they just let it go. If you saw the Oscars where Moonlight won Best Picture then you know that wouldn't be the case.
This is considered by many lawyers the best example of what happens (The voir dire scene, the cross etc) in a real courtroom. It's often used in Universities and Schools. It's a brilliantly funny film while also having a huge amount of heart. Also the reason he's sleeping so well in Prison is because they're from a rougher neighborhood in New York, so the sounds of violence and noise is 'normal' to him, where the quiet and animal noises aren't familiar.
Indeed. We used this when I was in law school. There are a couple things though. (1) There is no way a murder trial would go to trial a week after arraignment. It would take two months a the minimum. There would also first be a hearing on motions to suppress evidence, then some time for the defense to get the transcripts from said motions hearing. (2) The judge was wrong in overruling VInny's discovery violation objection, especially with such an important expert witness. Had the two been convicted, this case would come back on appeal. (3) I do like that the script had the prosecutor dismiss the charges rather than have the case go to the jury for a Not Guilty verdict. The rules of professional conduct puts a higher burden on prosecutors because of the power they have. Whereas any other attorney must "zealously advocate for the interests of his client within the bounds of the rules of professional conduct," prosecutors have a duty to "do justice." An ethical prosecutor must not charge, or dismiss after a case is charged, if he believes that he has "no reasonable likelihood of conviction at trial." He must certainly dismiss if he believes that the defendant is actually innocent. The portrayal of the prosecutor in this case was as an ethical prosecutor. Even though I think that he should not have been allowed to call his expert witness, we did see him notify the defense of this witness and potential testimony as soon as he received it - even after hours, no less. We see that he didn't play hide-the-ball with the discovery in the case. It was a good portrayal. (4) speaking of ethics, Vinny should not have been allowed to represent both defendants. Representing co-defendants is a conflict of interest since the defense of one could involve the admission of evidence of or argument for a theory of the case that implicates the co-defendant.
As a lawyer, it’s the most accurate movie I’ve ever seen. My evidence professor did actually show some of the scenes to us in class. So good. It’s accurate and it’s so funny.
You seemed surprised that Vinny was able to sleep during a prison "riot" but remember, he's from New York City. This is a commentary that such noises, as opposed to steam whistles, pigs, trains and, especially, screech owls, are far more common in any big city, especially New York. What's fun about this movie is the way several of Vinny's and Lisa's experiences in Alabama prepare them for the trial (without them knowing it at the time). The length of time to cook grits, getting stuck in the mud (and only one tire spinning - obviously their Caddy doesn't have posi-track, either), etc.
My absolute favorite moment in this is the nod/sneer that Marisa Tomei gives the prosecutor when he questions her having worked as a mechanic. She won an Academy Award for this.
I love how Marisa Tomei has interpreted every role she has played. The Wrestler, Spiderman, ... , I watch Wild Hogs when they repeat it, just to watch her going totally country after playing this role totally New York.
@@LumpyAdams They have accepted she deserved it? Who? She still tops one of the worst winners of all time! There is even conspiracy theories that she wasnt even meant to win... Deserved it? hehe sure Jan! Compared to Judy Davis or Miranda Richardsons roles that year? This silly comedic performance ? Bye! No she didnt deserve it! Wow a New York Italian playing a New York Italian, with a thick accent. Groundbreaking! Florals in spring!
The police officer dryly quoting "I shot the clerk" as a statement rather than the question it was is the best on screen example of why you never talk to the police without a lawyer present. They are not only allowed to use whatever you say to them against you, they are obligated to, and if they say anything that might help your case the prosecutor can have it struck from the record as hearsay. Always lawyer up.
It's funny how every reactor thinks he won't sleep in prison, but I am pretty sure Vinny is use to hearing crime and chaos. He is really street smart, if not always book smart. This really is an amazing movie.
The blending of comedy and serious acting chops give this gem a unique feel. I loved Fred Gwynne as a child watching him as Officer Muldoon in 'Car 54 Where Are You'. While this might be an old review, it is still fresh and funny. Great job, you two!
@@TBRSchmitt One of my favorite things about this movie is that it can easily be a serious courtroom drama with some slight changes in music & dialogue based on the story as it is... this is my absolute favorite trailer remash of it to that effect :D ruclips.net/video/SRO2YnCjRAY/видео.html
It's actually funny that they refer to Ralph Macchio as a youth in the movie, when he was 30 years of age during this movie :D And Marisa Tomei is younger than Ralph Macchio.
I love how they looked down on Lisa, then she blew them away with her master-mechanic know-how. Not only did she "face" the lawyer, but the big-shot "expert" too.
The reason why Vinny was able to sleep in prison, is because he is from New York and was use to the loud noise of people. If you guys haven't already, you should watch The Karate Kid movies.
The Karate Kid is an iconic 80's movie must see, like The Goonies, Ferris Bueller's Day Off and The Princess Bride etc. Also in case you weren't aware the judge played by Fredd Gwynne is best known as playing the original Herman Munster, on the classic tv comedy sitcom The Munster's. Yeah we definitely still need to watch a few of those movies listed! Haha that’s a good way to look at it! Those other noises are too unusual for NY but the prison sound hit just right lol!
Although he is best known as Herman Munster, Fred Gwynn also was one of the leads of the comedy series Car 54 Where Are You. He played the cop Officer Muldoon
I love the jail cell scene. It's such a testimony to how complex and subtle the English language is that everything Vinny is saying can be interpreted in two totally different ways. The writer of this film also wrote "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" (1988), which I think is one of the funniest films ever made. Steve Martin and Michael Caine play two con men who engage in a contest where the loser will have to leave town.
One of the best written and acted comedies ever! Love the cultural clash between NY and the South because it reflects prominent attitudes and cultural clashes that have always existed between the north and the south. Tomei won the Oscar for best supporting actor that year.
I busted out laughing the first time I saw the owl scene. It gets me every time when he runs outside and starts firing the gun. It’s like an old cartoon. The screeching owl is hilarious.

One of the fun things about this movie is how many seemingly insignificant events pay off later in the trial, like learning about grits or getting stuck in the mud.
Love this movie. One of my favorites. Legal Eagle did a review of this movie breaking down the legal side, it is really good breakdown and they did a great job. When I was truck driving, when I was at the Lynnwood JCPenney's unloading the trailer with the crew there, if someone said "the what?" We'd always reply, "the two utes." What's so cool is that both Joe Pesci and Marisa Tomei would both win Oscars. For Marisa this was Poetic Justice. She left her role as Marcy on As The World Turns replacing Courtney Cox Arquette to do A Different World. She got fired because they felt that nobody would take a White Girl Seriously at a Black College. She was heartbroken and cried but she became a Superstar at that time adn the others faded into obscurity. The Judge was also on The Munsters as Herman Munster. The Man at 19:52 is the Late James Rebhorn who got his first big break on Soaps most notably as Bradley Raines an abusive Father/Husband on As The World Turns Sister Show Guiding Light who on August 28th 1983 which was Michael Jackson's 25th Birthday told Phillip Spaulding that the Man whom he thought was his Father really wasn't. He was known to be a Character Actor who also appeared in Scent Of A Woman as Mr. Trask and in The Talented Mr. Ripley as Herbert Greenleaf Sr.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for this great reaction. "My Cousin Vinny" is one of my favourite films. I suggested it to several other reaction channels but I don't know if any of them even considered watching it. So thank you for your reaction and your thoughts. I don't know why but the same happened to "Das Boot", another one of my favourite films. I suggested it to some channels and only you watched it. Maybe I have to rethink my movie reaction channel ranking now (you've been in my top three anyway (besides "Shan watches Movies" and "Popcorn in Bed")). Because I cannot work due to two strokes (2019) and diagnosed depression (2018) I have a lot of time to follow 13 movie reaction channels to distract me a bit from these medical issues. Your reaction to this film was most welcome and I really enjoyed it a lot. So thank you again.
This is one of my go-to movies whenever I feel like watching something light and wholesome. And for a while, I got into this routine where it was the first movie I'd watch whenever I moved into a new apartment. My Cousin Vinny and a pizza, that became the ritual for some reason. I think it has to do with how unorganized and out of place they are, always trying to find a new place to sleep, etc. And I suppose after just moving into a new apartment, with a bunch of boxes everywhere that need to be unpacked etc., I could relate to that out-of-place feeling. As for the pizza, well, pizza is always delicious, but also a simple thing to grab when you haven't unpacked any kitchen stuff to do some cooking on your own! But yeah, this is one of those movies I could watch again and again.
This movie is a truly great comedy. Every scene works. Every joke lands. And it's not disgusting or over the top or obnoxious. The entire cast hits all their marks. A lot of the dialogue feels natural and not the typical "movie" dialogue. The movie doesn't even look that dated to me.
For me only two movies work this way - My Cousin Vinny and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels with Steve Martin and Michael Caine. I can always watch these two, light but with essence.
For me My Cousin Vinny is one of the most enjoyable comedy movies I have ever seen! Also TBR Schmitt you are awesome, you and your wife! I send you guys a lot of love from our beautiful Greece!

Fred Gwynn, who played the judge, was in a famous sitcom from the sixties called Car 54 that I watched when I was growing up on B&W TV. And I love the way Marissa Tomei plays a female version of Joe Peschi's New York wise guy and the scenes where Vinny deals with the guy from the bar. Great movie.
"Are you showing contempt for this Court?" "No I'm doing my best to hide it!" Those were actual words spoken to an actual Judge by one of the greatest Hollywood Actress' of all time...long before Hollywood became *HOLLYWOOD* in point of fact.
This is one of my favorite movies and other than the Rocky movies, probably my favorite reaction video from you two yet! Fun fact: from a legal standpoint, this is one of the most accurate movies ever made of proper courtroom proceedings.
From IMDb: Director Jonathan Lynn actually has a law degree and insisted the film's legal proceedings be realistic. In fact, many attorneys and law professors have praised the film for its accurate depiction of trial strategy and courtroom procedure, especially with regards to presenting expert witnesses at trial. In fact, the film has been screened at some law schools to illustrate courtroom procedures.
The lawyers teaching at my paralegal school showed us the in court scenes (later ones) as a how to guide; and said their law schools had done the same.
One thing that never gets brought up.....if this is such a realistic courtroom movie, wouldn't the case get thrown out because he lied about his name multiple times?
I'd recommend you watch Goodfellas. Like you folks, the first Joe Pesci movies I saw had comedy angles (Home Alone, Lethal Weapon 2, My Cousin Vinny). Then I finally saw Goodfellas. Pesci is truly terrifying in that film, and won an Oscar.
I have heard about how good "My Cousin Vinny" was for years but still haven't seen it oddly enough. After watching your guys review i definitely need to check it out especially after finding out Fred Gwynne is the judge! I love him so much in everything he does! If you guys enjoyed the court aspect of the movie, i highly suggest "12 Angry Men"(the original). Its highly regarded as one of the best movies of all time & i think its an incredible film! :D

Also, since you haven't seen The Karate Kid I'd say that needs to be put on the list immediately if it hasn't been already. I'd avoid The Next Karate Kid though which is a direct sequel to the original trilogy. Also this would open up for you to be able to watch the show Cobra Kai.
I am so glad you came across this movie. It's one of my favorite comedies. There are RUclips clips of lawyers saying not only is it a great comedy, it's also one of the best trial movies. Marisa Tomei had about a dozen acting credits before this. You are right to say she killed it because she won Best Supporting Actress. You need to see Goodfellas, Casino, Raging Bull and The Irishman to catch up on Joe Pesci movies.
The judge was Fred Gwyn who also played Herman Munster in the Munsters. Unfortunately, he passed away a year after this movie was made... This movie is a classic!
(1) I live in Alabama & this is one of my favorite movies! (2) If you've seen Goodfellas you've seen Joe Pesci. Also Lethal Weapon 2,3,&4. (3) The 1st Karate Kid movie is iconic because of how many people lost fights thinking they "knew karate" after watching it. You've have to see it to understand what I mean.
Thks was the final role for Fred Gwynne (Judge Howler) before he passed. HR was also in the two short lived iconic sitcoms from the60's Car 54 Where Are You? And The Monsters. He was also in the original Pet Cemetery as the neighbor Judd Crandal

My cousin Vinny is such a good movie. Thanks for the reaction. The judge played Herman Munster, from the Munsters.
What's so cool is that both Joe Pesci and Marisa Tomei would both win Oscars.
The judge played Herman Munster
This movie made me fall in love with Marisa back when I first saw it. Joe is insanely great once again.
Excellent choice, TBR Schmitt. That is one of my favorite movies.
My cousin Vinny is of my favorite movies. Great reaction btw.
Grits are delicious. Whether they are regular, creamy, or al dente.
Aww I love this! ❤️
Yeah that’s a great routine and connection to the movie!
For me only two movies work this way - My Cousin Vinny and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels with Steve Martin and Michael Caine. I can always watch these two, light but with essence.
@@SilverJackLeg "Oooo-klaaaaaa-HOMA, Oklahoma, Oklahoma, Oklahoma, Oklahoma!!"
For me My Cousin Vinny is one of the most enjoyable comedy movies I have ever seen! Also TBR Schmitt you are awesome, you and your wife! I send you guys a lot of love from our beautiful Greece!
"Two youthzz" does it every time. Fred Gwynne, the judge, is a legend.
That scene came from an actual conversation between Pesci and the director.
@@teedawg11 Didnt know that, cheers!
@@nomisnestral6956 If you like Marisa in this you should check out The Wrestler with her and Mickey Roarke. It was reviewed by professional wrestlers and they said it's one of the best wrestling movies ever made.
I wanna say, even before watching your reaction, THANK YOU for reacting to this movie.
Marisa Tomei won the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film. Well deserved! 👏👏👏👏👏
I also love the fact that nobody usually notices Vinny had to put on his leather jacket to run out of the house blasting the gun. 😂
OMG, I never noticed that!!! LOL
She has such a beautiful face
Loved the scene when Vinny comes in with a 1970's purple suit from Goodwill. Are you mocking me? lol.
The actor who played the judge also starred as Herman Munster in the TV show The Munsters
So happy to see you 2 yoots reacting to one of my favorite comedies! M T deserved the oscar for her performance!
No way!!!! This is my favorite comedy. I've been waiting for you guys to do this. I'm so excited!! lol =D
Yay! Hope you enjoyed it 😊
@@samantha_schmitt I did! Thanks Sam. I'm so glad you two liked it! :D

Wow! You said it perfect. I agree. 😄
Wow thank you so much! ❤️
Agree 100%.
"Are you showing contempt for this Court?"
"No I'm doing my best to hide it!"
Those were actual words spoken to an actual Judge by one of the greatest Hollywood Actress' of all time...long before Hollywood became *HOLLYWOOD* in point of fact.
The judge was played by actor who played Herman Munster in the old TV show The Munsters
Being from New York, THIS IS A CLASSIC!!! Love it!! 😂😂👊
Being from Alabama I say bless your heart
Being from Jersey i say….ayyy where’s the gabagool.
@@trespasserswill7052 Lmao 😂🙌🙏
@@J.Artan6 Ayyyy ohhh next to the prosciutto!! 😂👊
These comments 😂
This is one of my favorite movies and other than the Rocky movies, probably my favorite reaction video from you two yet! Fun fact: from a legal standpoint, this is one of the most accurate movies ever made of proper courtroom proceedings.
LegalEagle says this is one of the best movies for realistic portrayal of of the law works (well, at least compared with most other popular shows).
It was both a very funny movie and a very great legal drama!
I love when he comes running out the cabin blastin.. cracks me up everytime
The Karate Kid is in this movie^^ 💪 💪
One of my favorite movies. Such an easy one to rewatch too. Glad you guys enjoyed it :)
Marisa Tomei won a supporting actress Academy Award for this role.
Bye! And didnt deserve it! Wow a New York Italian playing a New York Italian, with a thick accent. Groundbreaking! Florals in spring!
Another classic Joe Pesci comedy is The Super. And of course, his role in the Lethal Weapon series as Leo Getz.
Yes!!! The Super is great!!!
Whenever I see Marisa in this she reminds me of my wife.. Such a pretty lady With an attitude.. great film
Marisa tomei. Absolutely gorgeous. Oscar well deserved.
I was so excited to see you guys do a reaction to this video I love this one
"Easy Money"!!!!!
5:17, Lane Smith, was in Son In Law, and played Perry White in Lois and Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman.
I moved from Northern IL. to central AL. in 2008 and I'm still looking for these parts of Alabama.
The mud on the other hand...
Everyone thumbs up if you want them to watch the Karate Kid movies and then Cobra Kai series. FYI, same director and music director of Rocky teamed up to do The Karate Kid series. Also, Bill Conti is heavily featured in the new Cobra Kai series, which is a sequel to the movies.
When Fred Guinne goes "The two what? What was that word?" Hysterical
This movie made me fell in love with Marissa Tomei and shes still loockin good for her age. Shes got an Oscar for this one
She just turned 57 yesterday! Doesn’t look a day over 30
Same
Herman Munster as Judge! Marissa won the Best support Actress Oscar for this role!
One of my favorite scenes is the screen owl scene. Hilarious. Whole movie is awesome.
You’re right, great movie and what a performance by her.
Also, since you haven't seen The Karate Kid I'd say that needs to be put on the list immediately if it hasn't been already. I'd avoid The Next Karate Kid though which is a direct sequel to the original trilogy. Also this would open up for you to be able to watch the show Cobra Kai.
Next Karate Kid was a terrible cash grab.
Great reaction folks love Marissa Tomei in the film you guys are awesome take care 🙂🤙🤙
Yup. I've seen lawyers say that it's surprisingly accurate in how such a trial would play out. Great film, too.
I enjoyed the reaction! Casting hit it out of the park on this movie!
Looks like you guys need to watch all three Karate Kid movies now..lol
The judge played Herman Munster in the old TV series "The Munsters" which also starred Yvonne DeCarlo as his wife Lily.
15:46, wow, Austin Pendleton!! He's in this movie!
The Judge was Fred Gwynne, who played Herman Munster in the TV series The Munsters.
you need to watch the OG 'The Karate Kid' its a rite of passage to watching movies!!
I’ve added it to the list!
Never before heard of TBR Schmitt, but I like Samantha TBR Schmitt as well.
The judge was Herman Munster from the 60s TV show.
Great movie excellent writing and acting thanks y’all this
Was a blast
Thks was the final role for Fred Gwynne (Judge Howler) before he passed. HR was also in the two short lived iconic sitcoms from the60's Car 54 Where Are You? And The Monsters. He was also in the original Pet Cemetery as the neighbor Judd Crandal
“Munsters”
Yes the moment has come!!!! I watched it first 10 years ago and I like this film
It is great!
