Birgitta Helmersson's "Zero Waste Patterns" book has one for a singlet/spaghetti strap tank top made from remnants. But if you can make a patchwork rectangle from your scraps, you could use any of her zero waste patterns to make a garment!

This was super fun to see!
For a few days my mum and I went through our fabric scrap pile and made over 2500 baby hats out of soft cotton etc. To donate to several hospitals in Guinee (country in Africa). The hats would be part of a care packet for mothers that just gave birth to their babies, to take home. It was a group effort and really a great wat to get rid of scraps. But also some effort because you have to take care with babyproofing the seams. And of course making sure there are no loose threads or anything.

Your costume look was so wonderful! (I hope the dress gets to do summer things like farmer's markets and picnics, too.) The pattern made up such a cute dress. If I made it, to make life totally unsupportable, I am dreaming of topping each piece with a single colour of something thin, translucent, and crisp. I also want to insert in seemingly random (but totally planned) pieces, between the cloth and translucent layers, small things that would bounce around freely. I am thinking a flower a pebble a ring a charm etc. But, I also know that I am not going to make this, so there's that.

When assembling any kind of patchwork, you can also stick little squares of beige/green masking tape with numbers or letters on them on the fabric pieces themselves, to help keep the order straight during the transfer to the sewing machine. As long as you don’t iron over the tape, it won’t leave a mark.

That's why I have been a knitter for over a decade, much easier to fix mistakes or start over without wasting materials. I am (re)learning to sew so I can recreate specific clothes that I can't find anymore and that are basically the only thing I wear and so far it has gone better than expected but I think maybe it has to do with I am older, wiser, a little more patient than I was a decade ago when I first tried machine sewing :)

Making stuffed Platonic and Archimedean solids for kids is a fun way to use scraps. They need a little bit of strategy and a reference on the shapes unless you’re a geometer but patterns aren’t necessary. They don’t keep their angularity well without some kind of ribbing. They do over time offer kids a context in which to learn or at least gain exposure to some fun big math words if you label them or learn their names.

Yes to following instructions! I'm self taught, and so I'm finally learning to do some steps even when it isn't explicitly written (looking at you understiching). One thing that drives me nuts is when patterns don't tell you to finish the shoulder seams if there isn't a lining. Maybe it really isn't necessary, but I get so annoyed if I forgot to do it because it just seems unfinished to me.

I love the idea of using up all the scrap fabrics and I love the final result- it’s adorable. However, if I wanted to do super complicated patterning to get particular shapes, and all of that, then I would just start with the fancy quilting. I am strictly a rectangle or square quilter I don’t do the fancy stuff. Very cute and I love all the pink and definitely got the weird Barbie thing going on but no. I love the brocade it’s so pretty.

Love this! How you did it without making it look like a quilt is beyond me. So cool.

I almost always sew without a pattern, but I don’t have the patience to read the instructions and I fully accept things are going to go wrong. Also I only ever try to make things that you can theoretically make with just measurements.

this video made me realise i could binge watch you sewing, and if you organised a meetup where people just came to sew something w you, it would be THE C O O L E S T - but i'm in india, so slightly harder, unless you come here 🙃

this is goofy, but did you know they make mini vacuums? I use one for my sewing machine, it's nice because it's battery operated, so it just sits in the drawer of my sewing table. love your content so much as per the usual, wendy. thank you for sharing your makes.

You can save a little time with your piecing/construction if you skip the backstitching in seams that terminate in the seam allowance of another crossing seam that will be sewn later.
