The line “mother’s gonna put all her fears into you” was really profound for me. I never did the things I always wanted to do for that reason. I don’t think my parents meant to to that, but regardless they did. As my kids grew up, I always remembered that line whenever they asked to do something. I would ask myself, “why do I not want them to have that experience? Is it because of my fear?” I never want to have my kids miss out on amazing experiences because of me. You know what? They are having all of the amazing experiences I wished I had had at their age.

If ever there was a band whose albums were meant to be listened to from beginning to end, Pink Floyd is it.
The Wall is a narrative rock opera, really, and your interpretation is right!
Listen to the whole album in a single sitting, and it will all fall into place.
    Cheers!

@CEOofYTisPureEvil Your reply is totally irrelevant to the post that you replied to, but I will respond by saying that I think Harri is one of the deepest, most thoughtful reactors out there. I subscribe to around 70 reactors, and I think Harri is my favorite.

@CEOofYTisPureEvil You posted a comment about the reactor under a very personal comment by a viewer. Your comment about Harri has no place under Greg's post because your criticism of the reactor is irrelevant to Greg's very personal and even painful post about his mother.

  • @1nelsondj

This is one of the best songs on the album I think, straight from Roger Waters' heart. His dad died in the war so he (or his alter-ego Pink) was brought up by his mum. Maybe she was over-protective, didn't prepare him to go out into the world but wanted to keep him close to home. It's a selfish attitude so she doesn't have to live alone. I like how the organ comes in so quietly, holding a single note for several bars.

    • @Hobodeluxe960
      @Hobodeluxe960 3 года назад +7

you have to realize he grew up in post WWII England after the Blitzkreig bombed them. He lost his father and it's pretty easy to understand why she was overprotective of him. He was all she had left. The thing about this album is it needs to be taken as a complete album to fully realize just how powerful and sad it really is. He built "the wall" out of the bad things he had happen to him to insulate him from the rest of the world. One of my favorite albums of all time and if you can be sure to check out Roger's concert Bluray of this album. It fills in a lot of the gaps with powerful visuals and narration.

Having heard this music for years, the Wall can be hard to explain. You should check out the movie. It's so odd, such great music though. Pink (in the movie) is raised by a single mother who lost her husband during WWII.

You nailed the emotional dynamic of this song. The deeper understanding of the Mother character, which you couldn't get without having heard the whole album, is that the boy's father was killed in combat. The mother is clinging on tightly to her son because she's been traumatized by her own losses, and this trauma affects the son in turn.

You have to remember the context of the song. All of the members of Floyd were growing up thru WW2...bombings, air raid sirens...most of their fathers off to war. They were left with a mother to raise them....protect them....instill all their fears within them....mother should I build a wall....
In the end...mother did it need to be so high....IE the wall...

EVERYTHING on The Wall plays on multiple levels. This song may be the best example of that. It definitely has the literal, personal interpretation. But it can also be interpreted as an allegory for the how the state approaches its relationship with citozens. Education with its students. All the ways in which society seeks to control individuality through fear.
It should be moted this was released in 1982, predicting the current pervasive culture of safetyism that has been present since the 00s, certainly the 10s

Because The Wall is a concept album (a rock opera, really), listening to a song here or there is kind of like trying to understand a movie by only watching two or three scenes. It really needs to be listened to a few times straight through. Then the individual "scenes" have context and make so much more sense.

  • @modularmuse

Perhaps one reason for the 'rollercoaster' is that the music alternates between 4/4 or common rock time and 3/4 or waltz timing. Lullaby's for example might tend to be in a 3/4 time. It has a softer, gentler feel to it for most material and is a factor in this song.

Go back a bit in their career to the album before Dark Side Of The Moon & give a listen to Feerless from the album Meddle. Or from the same album, if you are up for a 25 minute mind blowing extravaganza listen to Echoes.

I love your reactions to My favorite band Pink Floyd! After The Wall the band started breaking, I can’t recommend any full album after The Wall, but there are a few songs here and there after Roger Waters left. I would recommend Echoes for you! Please give that a listen 🥰

The movie may only be 9 minutes longer than the album but it has SOOOOO many more answers. This is only one act out of many of a rock opera. PEACE/JT

First off you did great deciphering the meaning. You gotta listen to the whole WALL album. This song did a great job of describing what most Mothers do because its there nature to be protective. It also goes into the way God created us & what happens when natural order is ignored & often rejected. The order of Man, Woman & Child & the family in general is so important to the mental & physical aspect of life. Chaos vs Logos

Great Track, from a brilliant Album, and the Movie does both the story and the music justice (I have just put it on at home).

I watched a lot of reactions to this great song. A lot of female listeners seem to think this is an ode to motherhood but it's not, and it's clear in these lines: "Mama's gonna make all of your nightmares come true, mama's gonna put all of her fears into you...". I think Roger Waters was writing about his memories with his own mother, especially not-so-positive ones.
