How exciting that this year in particular the days of the week line up as they did in 1912. Unbelievable work on the Titanic H&G project so far, keep it up!

I'm not a pro, but I think that number of operating boilers not always indicates the ship's speed. Boilers produce steam, which powers ships machines, that in turn power the screws. If the machines can only absorb so much steam, lets say from 90% of boilers, this will mean that they will not be able to transfer that additional 10% of steam into HP of the machines no matter what. Since early boilers where not as fail safe as later ones, perhaps the Titanic had several boilers in reserve in case some operational ones would break down and will have to be put out of operation? Although its an extra weight for the ship, it does offer the option of maintaining top speed even if some of the boilers are not lit. And btw, thanks for awesome content!

I think 21-21,5 knots were her designet cruising speed, her flank speed was 24-25 knots with full steam pressure, at the maximum revolutions of her screws, but Titanic never achieved such speed. I red that her top were 23,25 knots steaming Southampton after her sea trials.

Isn't Boiler Room 1 normally only active in port and not used during voyages? That'd mean there would only ever be 24 boilers at most lit at sea. I'm going off information I read on Encyclopedia Titanica from an article called "Cold-starting the Titanic", which I believe would have been fairly well researched by the author.

    • @bobbybobby7943

No. The Olympic class weren't designed for speed and were only capable of a top speed of 24 knots, generally cruising at 21 knots. The ships, being powered mostly by reciprocating engines, didn't have the power to allow a ship of such size to steam so quickly.
