      Safety at sea was enacted partly by the sinking of the Titanic. It is only after a disaster strikes that we start to improve safety.

    • @jamesbattista1466
      @jamesbattista1466 4 года назад +6

      Jeb Kerman that is so true. One needs only to look at past commercial aircraft disasters that have made flying today so much much safer. It’s as if the sacrifice of others was necessary to learn the fail points and weaknesses of our technology, thus making our current lives so so much safer. This applies not only to transportation, but also to many other aspects of our modern lives where safety improvements have saved many lives.

    • @rks581
      @rks581 5 лет назад +13

      @@mattc2094 Yes and no. Most modern flooring that is called 'linoleum' is actually vinyl. The material used in the 1980s was almost always vinyl. Linoleum is made from solidified linseed oil mixed with pine rosin and fillers like powdered wood, cork, and chalk, with a fabric backing (canvas or burlap/hessian). The name is from the Latin words 'linum' (flax, the plant that linen and linseed oil come from) and 'oleum' (oil). Vinyl, polyvinyl chloride, is a petroleum product. That's caused some renewed interest in linoleum, which is 'natural'.

    0:35 is the lightship that Olympic would accidentally ram 20 years later.
    The ship might have survived had the radio not broken. The repair cost them valuable time and come morning on the 14th they were backed up with passenger messages. This meant they spent the entire day, right up to the collision with the iceberg, clearing this backlog, being overworked to the point that they didn't grasp the severity of the iceberg warnings they were receiving and didn't think to pass them along to the bridge. (Titanic, rather ironically, broadcast an iceberg warning on behalf of SS Amerika that just may well have been about the very iceberg she hit a mere hour before the collision)

      There were so many icebergs in Titanic’s path, if she had missed the one she would’ve hit another. In fact, a low-lying icefield was in the way and she might have run aground on some and Titanic would’ve sank very quickly and I doubt anybody would’ve survived. There were many things that went wrong for that ship and her passengers and crew, but avoiding ramming the icefield wasn’t one of them. Because of the lone iceberg that Titanic hit, she had enough time to evacuate at least some of the people.

Although, there's a school of thought that posits that if the Californian had mostly shut down her boilers (maintaining only the minimum pressure to power lights, hot water, deck machinery etc) that it would have taken longer to build up a head of steam, travel the 10 miles or so to Titanic's location, and transfer the passengers than the Titanic had before sinking. Regarding the coal fire in the forward starboard side coal bunker (Coal Bunker W) of Boiler Room No. 5 I challenge anyone to explain how members of the fireman's crew were able to deposit all the displaced coal from said coal bunker into the portside coal bunkers. Tell me how this could have been accomplished. You can't force it in through the hatch doors. The only way you can deposit it into any other coal bunker is from the top at the Orlop Deck level. Given the series of ladders and catwalks, etc. it would have required a Herculean effort in the form of some type of labor intense bucket-brigade to redeposit all that coal into the port side bunkers. I submit that the crew of Boiler Room No. 5 did one of two things to address the coal fire in Bunker W:
    1.) Require that all 5 of BR 5's double-sided Scotch boilers use Coal exclusively from Coal Bunker W until the seat of the fire within the bunker was located and the fire put out.
    2.) Remove the coal from Bunker W forming large piles of coal in front of each Scotch boiler on the Stokehold plate flooring within the Boiler Room.
    Regarding how the port side list developed by the night of April 14th I would submit Option 1 would come closer to helping explain how such a development appeared as it did. Anyway, I just wanted to lay this out and see what sort of response it may get.

    T&H said the coal to Port prevented the ship from capsizing to starboard. It listed 5 degrees to starboard (would have been 8 without the coal). But when the ship listed to Port (Scotland Road flooding, D-deck gangway door open), the coal should have made thinks worse. Surprising it did not capsize (or the "everyone to starboard" was more effective than thought).

    • @TitanicHG
      @TitanicHG  5 лет назад +3

      At that point, both sides of the ship had been flooded through, and it would have taken a lot more to capsize the ship.

    • @johan9428

      @@TitanicHG Thanks, that makes sense. Thinking back, Titanic lasted quite long given all the openings. And Olympic went through so much during it's carrier without sinking. Today, ships would capsize in no time for less than that. Good luck for your remaining work.

    Hi, you asked the rhetorical question on what would have happened to Titanic's survivors if the wireless operators failed to repair their machine. Well, the answer I believe is that nothing, as Titanic would not have sunk at all. After Phillips and Bride repaired the device, one of the messages received caused captain Smith to modify the course southwardly to avoid reported ice and icebergs. Had the radio not been operational, this adjustment would not have happened and Titanic would have certainly avoided the iceberg that sank it. It still might have run into an icefield or encounter icebergs and suffer some damage, but considering how very rare and unlucky the damage Titanic suffered was, it was unlikely to have been sunk in other scenarios.
    Also, even if Titanic still sunk even without sending radio distress calls, considering the density of shipping traffic in that are and calmness of the sea, it is likely they would have been found by another ship, perhaps a few hours later.

    Afraid i have to disagree ever so slightly. A voyage is counted berth to berth wheras the sea passage is counted from what would have been light ship to light ship. Nowadays we call sea passage from the time the pilotage from the departure port stops to the time the pilotage at the arrival port commences.

    Interesting and chilling commentary with an error. Titanic had a big coal problem.
    Olympic class steamers typically needed 6500 tons of coal for the trip to New York. Trouble was, the local coal miners were out on strike. J. Bruce Ismay had been able to scrape up, about 5800 tons of coal. By cancelling the trips of all other local White Star ships. Some of this coal was in poor condition. Resulting in controlable bunker fire. Bunker fires were common on coal fired ships. Wet coal was more flammable than dry coal. So trying to fight such a fire with water doesn't work. So standard practice was to shovel wet, burning coal into the nearest boiler asap.
    Common practice also meant isolating a burning bunker as much as possible. This included cooling near by bulkheads with water. To prevent warping, and to keep the fire from spreading.
    Strange as might seem, the coal situation had a major impact on the disaster. Titanic was short of fuel for the trip. This meant that heaving to, for the night, or a significant southern detour. Two common practices, were out of the question.

      @@hugos5114 Referencing the book "Titanic's last Secrets." One large Olympic class ship was far more profitable than the other ships (economy of scale). I've not seen data on passengers for those canceled voyages. There really wasn't enough coal. Titanic's voyage should have been delayed. J. Bruce Ismay pulled out all the stops. Rushing the already delayed Titanic voyage, ASAP. Desperate for the money due to the financial situation of White Star and IMM.
      J. Bruce Ismay was truely responsible for the the loss of 1500+ lives and very nearly his own. Making operational decisions based purely on "bean counter" values. If Ismay had not rushed Titanic into sevice. It wouldn't have been there to hit an iceberg. Olympic/Titanic two-way service could have beem a big success. The later addition of Brittanic would have put White Star and IMM on top of the Atlantic passenger trade.

    In reading tons of books of Titanic the light ship was never mention . The Titanic fire is what weakened the ship. So when it hit the ice berg. If Titanic's wireless guy had even shown more respect to the other wireless operator the whole Titanic outcome might have been different .Say the guy didn't go to bed because of the operations rudeness . He might have heard the distress call as it first happened. Possibly getting the ship headed toward the Titanic HOURS sooner . Maybe saving more lives . But one man choose to be rude .
