Bruhhh I legit watched this a month ago and went to the thrift store today just cause of whatever, and here I find an Olympus Stylus Epic DELUXE for 15 bucks. In stupid perfect condition, and I didn’t even know it was a deluxe version until YOU SAID IT HERE. I’m too happy man just earned a sub cause It made me happy af and the fact that you sliced this makes it even better.
HECK YES, GILBERT. That's the score of the century. Load some film in it already and get to shooting!!!! AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!!!! WOOOOO!!!!
I have the Limited Edition in burgundy and cane with the leatherette case. I got it for $3.99 USD at Savers thrift store this past summer. I didn’t realize till after I bought it and researched that mine is special and worth more than what I paid for! The bottom plate says only 20,000 were made. My serial number is like 000853 or something.
+LEI H. I find that the pricing is inconsistent more than anything. There are definitely a few resellers on eBay that are charging ridiculous prices for these cameras, but there still are a few that keep them reasonable at around $60 without shipping. If you're really keen on scooping one up, check back on eBay every week and eventually you'll come across one that's in rougher cosmetic shape or one that doesn't come with any accessories and you should be able to snag it for a lower price!
Superb review. Glad to see that someone else loves the Olympus Stylus Epic as much as I do. I shoot mine mainly with Ilford XP2 Super 400, a C41-process black and white film, thus avoiding any red-eye problems. It's a foolproof camera that one can hand to a waiter or waitress and ask him/her to shoot three or four of us around a restaurant table. In the resulting photo, every face is in sharp focus and the ambient light in the restaurant is perfectly rendered. No other camera, digital or film, in my experience does this better. I've also used it with color film, and the results have been equally flawless. I agree that the OSE is a little miracle machine. --Greg Embree
+Suzanne Embrue it might be the ultimate daily shooter! They're readily available, rock solid, weatherproof, and they're backed up with incredible functionality and optics. The OSE is definitely a little miracle machine, nothing else seems to come close to it in terms of an all-around package.
Epic prices got suspiciously wild after I posted this video up. But have hope! I found another Epic at a thrift shop for $2 and another friend just thrifted one a couple days ago for $5. They're out there for the low, it's just a waiting game mixed with a bit of good luck.
My parents had the gold version and I loved the pano mode on it. You have to have it printed for it to work. Back then, we'd take our film to just K-mart and they automatically printed our pano shots on an especially long pano paper that was about twice as long as a normal 4x6 for no extra cost! It felt so special.
in my country these cameras are insanely expensive and you’re not able to find them in thrift stores. i ordered one for 130€ which is about $145 - and i know that is a LOT of money. but i couldn’t take it anymore. I’ve been searching for 6-7 months now and the cameras i found were always around the 300-350€ range. man this is crazy
Years ago, my boss at my former job GAVE one of these to me, and he had barely used it. I think it even has the little factory black leather case. I'm an old Olympus fan, but didn't know at the time that the Epic was a desirable point & shoot. I did shoot some film with it once, but still preferred my little Olympus XA. You've convinced me to give the Epic another chance.
I went to my grandma's yesterday and I was looking through her drawers. While searching for her old phone, I found the camera you mentioned in the video. The battery was dead, but it was ready to go with plenty of film inside it. I have it in front of me now, and tomorrow I'm going to get the 3V battery for it. Just wanted to share it.
Just got one today at a charity shop. She only wanted £1 for it, but I gave her a fiver anyway. Put a film and battery in and snapping away happily. Great review by the way, love your channel. 👌👍👏👏👏👏👏
Hi Mike- I have an Olympus Stylus Epic DLX that I bought in the early to mid-80's. Many rolls of film have been shot and I really like the way the camera handles. So convenient. I am putting the finishing touches on a video comparing the Stylus with the XA. I have both cameras and have owned them since new. When the video editing is done, I will send you a link. I gave you a thumbs up and subscribed. Good work! ~Earl
Mike, I bought a similar camera an Olympus Stylus Infinity new in about 1990. I only just sold it about 10 months ago on ebay. I think this was the model before the Epic. It is a f3.5 lens instead of the 2.8 of the Epic. Mine worked fine, but the auto focus got confused easily and there was no manual adjustment. I use a combination of film and digital cameras now. I really like taking film but at about a dollar a shot I just did not get enough keepers out of this Olympus. I still have two very nice Oly OM2ns that I use all the time. One of them I have had since new. They are just brilliant machines and some of my very best shots every year come from these cameras. If Costco was still doing cheap developing I likely would have kept the Stylus Infinity, but today I prefer the superior shots you get from the Oly OM lenses and much better focus and metering systems.
+Robert Nuttmann I've heard that the Stylus Infinity's f/3.5 lens packs a punch, but its autofocus system gets confused even in high-contrast environments. Luckily, the Stylus Epic always gets focus spot on, and its reliability and consistency makes it a winner in my books. You are certainly making quite the case for the OM2n, I'll have to take a closer look at it!
Love the MjuII/Stylus Epic. Great video. I remember shooting at a Scritti Politti gig with Ilford 3200 film in one. Had to keep tweaking those buttons on the back like you mentioned when they reset each time you close the camera.
Hey Mike! Dope review. also nice to hear some Doom for a change from all this stock-music people use. I got the Mju I and I love it like you love your Mju II. Friend of mine got the Mju II as well and she loves it. Real masterpiece. Big up!
+Billierudeboy1 it definitely punches above its weight class, the Mju series is one of Olympus' finest moments!! So stoked you're loving yours. Would love to keep some DOOM in the latest videos but I got into copyright trouble, yikes! Doing my best to keep things funky though!
i've got an olympus miu-1 (olympus stylus) and it shows a blinking e on the "screen" every time i open it... does anybody know hoe to fix this problem?
Hello Mike, can you tell me what is the difference between prices of this used item on e-bay, because I want to buy some used analog camera, and found same items for about 50$ and 200$, both used and in very good condition.
I've got one and depending on how high a small camera is ranked on your list of priorities then it's good. However, it's for snapshots mostly. I prefer the Nikon F100 and it's got a 1 degree spot meter and Nikon's killer 3D Matrix metering, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, Program and Full Manual. The weight is really nice and with a 35 D AF lens or an 35 to 105mm AF lens you have up to 3 stops of exposure compensation up and down plus a ton of other features. I don't care about having a tiny camera on me all the time. I actually prefer the Olympus XA2, if I want a tiny snap shooter in my shirt pocket. Whatever floats your boat.
I wanted this camera since the days I started in photography. I saw the ads and amazing reviews on photo magazines and found it new in a store in the 90s but never managed to get it. Still looking for a good one that is not damn expensive... not lucky yet.
+Bricklinsv1970 whoa, oh my gosh I've always drooled over the limited edition Stylus Epics, I originally thought you were talking about the Stylus Epic DLX! I've always wanted a limited edition Epic but could never afford to shell out so much money for one. Hopefully one day I'll have the luxury of having one to call my own, keep your fingers crossed for me.
Mike Janik I used to work for Ritz Canada and Kits Camera as a lab tech and Camera sales. I also have a Samsung Maxima Zoom 145 equipped with a Schneider glass Len's and its a point and shoot. They are very great! They were over $300 new now you can get them for less than $20!! That's my favorite Camera.
I personally prefer the Yashica T3 with the NA scope, I don't really mind it being a bit bigger/boxier :) but nevertheless the stylus epic/mju2 is a great camera
I love your video's so much! They're so helpful since i'm just starting with shooting film. After watching this one I actually bought the mju-ii (for only €15 aye) so I hope it is as good as you say it is!! Thanks thanks :)
+Megan Bruinen so glad you're enjoying the videos Megan! Whoa, finding a Stylus Epic for that kind of a price is a steal, I really hope it lives up to expectations!!! Would love to see some of the photos you take with it!
I have one of these! I think it's a little older though. My mom used it for years...i'm thinking about popping into walgreens and getting a new battery and some film.
Hey Yo Mike, can you believe it I've had one of these sitting in my drawer for the last 15 years (the gold one DLX baby). I got it back when I wasn't into photography. Now that I'm getting into photography, what should I do with this? It shoots film of course but how will this compare with your ubiquitous cell phone cameras we always carry. I'm guessing with the 2.8 lens you get a shallow DOF in a compact body?
+Craig McKernan that is the score of the century!! If you're getting into photography, the answer is simple: load the Stylus up and shoot it! Phone cameras are ridiculously wide angle, and while the Stylus' 35mm is still wide, it definitely feels like more of a standard length lens in comparison. The fast aperture will render out of focus areas nicely, but you won't get too shallow a depth of field because the lens still is pretty wide. And if by some miracle you don't love the camera, you could always send it my way 😉
+Mike Janik - Thanks Mike! I'm going to give shooting on film a try after shooting all digital for years. I got an AE-1p with a bunch of FD lenses now, and remembered I had one of these baby's tucked away. Now that I know I've also got this little pocket monster I'm going to load it up too and start hitting the streets with it as well.
Awesome video man and fire beat choice for sure, just ordered myself an epic. It is my first 35mm camera so what can you recommend me for film to try out first and play around with and where do you normally go to for film? I am in Canada if that makes a difference.
Ryan Lord appreciate the kind words fam and congrats on the purchase! You'll absolutely love the camera. Because it's a point and shoot and has fully auto everything, you can go with whichever film you like and leave the focusing and exposure to the camera and just focus on the process of taking a photo. I'd recommend a fresh all-purpose 400 or 800 ISO colour film to get started with, Kodak Portra is a personal favourite of mine and it's one of the most widely available films so getting your hands on some shouldn't be too tricky. I get all my film through eBay or at local camera shops whenever I visit one - eBay has a little bit of everything to offer, when you get more comfortable with shooting film you can definitely branch out and get some rare, weird, or expired films off eBay and have some fun with those!
I don't love it quite as much as you, but I still like it a lot. I've had one since they first came out in 1997, I think I'm on my third or fourth. The issue with the flash, having to reset everything each time you open the camera, the incredibly loud film advance, and the inability to shoot through glass because of the autofocus are the big flaws for me. The lens quality, size, and the fact that it's weather-proof keep me using it. I recently got a Nikon Action Touch, which may give the Stylus Epic a run for its money. It's not as compact as the Stylus but the flash has its own manual on/off switch, you can see roughly where the autofocus is hitting, it's fully submersible up to 10 feet and it has a zone focus mode which enables you to shoot through glass. Plus the lens is also great.
+Neilson Abeel Jr the flash reset is definitely a pain in the butt for many, but I've never had any trepidations about letting the flash do its thing. Seems to work perfectly every time for me! Nikon's L35 line is killer, I can't wait to get my hands on one! Fingers crossed I can scoop one up at a flea market over the summer, their prices have gone crazy online over the past year. Is the Action Touch essentially an L35 in a waterproof body? Having an autofocus system and the option to zone focus in tricky situations is a remarkable convenience, and it's always nice to see point and shoots giving their users additional manual controls.
+Mike Janik Yes, I believe that's correct, the Action Touch is a waterproof version of the L35. I got mine for only $45 on eBay. I have to admit, I'm a little nervous about using it in water. I have a Nikonos V and the waterproofing seems really rinky-dink in comparison. Of course, the Nikonos is meant for diving.
+Neilson Abeel Jr that's a shockingly reasonable price! I just got some cash back in a tax return, maybe I should go blow it on an Action Touch? I know they also come in a wonderful orange colour, that makes them even more enticing! Have you had any issues with reliability? I know the L35s can be sort of hit and miss with their electronics.
Just bought this on your recommendation. Best decision I've made, and I'm going to buy myself a back up as soon as possible. I can't wait to get all my prints back; so far, it's operated seamlessly. Have you ever looked into a yashica t5/t4 super?
Heck yes my man, welcome to the club!! I've looked into the Yashica's but couldn't justify the prices for their poor-ish reliability records. Stupid things go wrong on them; sometimes the lens cap doesn't automatically retract or the lens doesn't pop out as intended. These are really small things that should never be the reason why a camera becomes a paperweight, it's silly. The motors also tend to die on them, but that's a little more respectable, hah! I'm praying to the thrift gods to stumble across one at a flea market soon!
The Olympus motors will outperform and outlast the Yashicas. I’ve had too many T4’s and Stylus- never had issues with my Olympus giving up the ghost 👻 compared to the many T4/5 that simply died on me.
I shoot dozens of rolls with the Stylus Epic. Really not worth. Not worth spending money to shoot with this camera, only a SLR or a rangefinder is worth shooting film considering how much film costs now.
+Jackson Hollister the Stylus Epic is considerably better all over. Sharper, faster lens with more contrast, more accurate autofocus and autoexposure in tricky lighting situations and at night. Definitely worth the extra cash.
Hey man, cool video. I had an older model (just Stylus, not Epic) and after seeing your vid i'll probably look into another one. 2 questions, what is your personal favorite film to use for point and shoots? Also, do you have an Instagram for your photography?
If I could always have one film for my point and shoots, it'd be Portra 400. If I'm cash-strapped, I'll throw some Kodak Gold 200 in, but I definitely prefer the 400-speed film for shots when I'm out and about. No Instagram, but check www.thetorontotimes.ca!
+Dablob1000 any Olympus Stylus that has 'zoom' in the title will do exactly that - zoom! They feature different zoom ranges, and while convenient, they're really not worth all that much. The lenses aren't outstanding by any means, and if we're honest, I think they're pretty poor. The Stylus Epic is enormously different, both in ergonomics and features; the Epic has an AMAZING fixed 35mm f/2.8 prime lens in a smaller, lovelier package. It is often confused with the Olympus Stylus, but I have the Olympus Stylus Epic. Thank you so much for the subscription! Stay tuned for more!
+Mike Janik thanks for the help! took me forever to find one for a decent price but I finally did and I just got it! can't wait to shoot my first roll. Keep up the cool vids!
+Sam Wood that's a really bloody difficult question. They're both incredible cameras but they're very different from one another. If you want something that's completely automated and foolproof, go with the mju II. If you want manual controls, some quirkiness, and more fun, go with the XA.
great camera, great lens. but it's not the rolls royce of the points and shoots. Try the ricoh gr1, the nikon 28ti and the hexar af. The mju ii is the best affordable point and shoot of all time, but there are some flaws as u might know with the flash reset.
+Gonçalo Norberto I absolutely adore the Nkokn 28ti, I can't wait to get my hands on one, it might claim the Rolls Royce title! The Hexar has an amazing lens and discrete mode, but it has really silly controls, even sillier than the mju. The Ricoh was amazing in its day but they're all breaking down and dying now, they're not serviceable anymore and their demise is a slow and inevitable process now. Such a shame, they're such incredible cameras.
How do you feel about the Olympus Stylus Epic Zoom 170? I'm currently shooting on a slim T but my mom picked up the Olympus at a thrift for $5 and I know she'd gladly give it to me haha. Is it just as good?
+Cullen Arroyo appreciate it my dude! NIGHTED made the shirts a couple years back, they've been gone for a while now. You should head over to their site and support these cats anyway nighted.storenvy.com
Been doing some research on buying an inexpensive point and shoot film camera for a few weeks and I had it down to a shortlist of 4 or so, but this review just tipped me over the line on buying a stylus epic. So thank you. Seems like theyre rather hard to find online, are there any reliable websites you have used that sell used cameras and ship internationally ? P.s great song. (Doomsday)
The Epic is a great choice! I bought mine off eBay, and you shouldn't have trouble finding a solid working copy the same way. Look for Epics that have been film-tested and buy the camera from a reliable seller if you want to play things extra safe.
I just bought a used Olympus Stylus. Battery is in. No film. When I slide open cover and expose lens AUTO-S shows and it keeps beeping. If I hit the flash button, nothing happens. It beeps until I close the front. Will this sort itself out when I load film or did I buy a bad camera and should I just toss it?
+Jo Vena yikes, I have no idea what could be going on! I've only ever used the Stylus Epic, so I have no personal experience with your camera. I looked through the Stylus' manual and it doesn't mention anything about the camera beeping. Did a few Google searches as well and nothing turned up. I would expect all the functions to work normally without any film in it, you should be able to do stuff like change flash settings and take a shot without any film loaded. Wish I could have been more helpful, hopefully the problem sorts itself out for you!
OMG, I just found out you got this one!!!! I just got an Olympus Mju I, do you know anything about it? And I'm testing some different kind of films, any suggestion? Thank you :)
+Samantha Reyes that's lit! I'm sure you'll love it! And yes, the mju II is the same as the Stylus Epic - the European market's version is called the mju II and the American market's version is the Stylus Epic. Same camera, same components, just a different name depending on region!
I was wondering how you put the strap on? I just got one from a friend and it doesn't have something to put a strap on. I just got it and I haven't developed any rolls yet, I can't wait! But do you have any suggestions to put a strap on? Tristan
Mf doom and cameras. Perfect. great videos man keep em coming!
The ultimate combo - thank you for the support, Patrick!
ALL CAPS WHEN YOU SPELL THE MAN NAME

Got one of these a couple hours ago for $7 bucks. Everything worked !
WHERE??
Your lucky boyyy
Just bought this at a yard sale for $10, thanks for the introduction, now I'm super excited to use it! Was about to leave it too
That's crazy, you got the fixed lens for 30 dollars they're like 100-300 now shit is ridiculous

Wow, I had one of these in my old desk, I completely forgot about it; it was the first camera I used and learned on back in the 90s.
Been on the look out for one for a while and finally found one at a local thrift store for $10 in the original box I was so stoked
Richard M so jealous!
You just saved me from spending my savings on the Yashica T4. Thanks!
That's awesome to hear man! I've always found it tough to justify T4 prices, especially when the Epic gives me so much more!

Found a first gen stylus for 3 bucks at Goodwill and I'm loving it! Gonna keep hunting for the epic though. Great video 🤙🏽

It's been a while since I've shot any film, but i just figured I'd comment again as this is the video that got me into MF DOOM
That's absolutely fantastic to hear!! Glad I could help put you on to DOOM!
I watched this full video just because you payed doom. dope.Had to subscribe. Channel looks great.
Hey Mike! Dope review. also nice to hear some Doom for a change from all this stock-music people use. I got the Mju I and I love it like you love your Mju II. Friend of mine got the Mju II as well and she loves it. Real masterpiece.

It would be truly Epic if Olympus brings back to market a new stylus epic iii made out of titanium! I’d buy a few of them regardless of price.

Found one for 10$ yesterday on kijiji (Canadian Craigslist) in mint condition, so hype.
Huge Doom fan. One of my favorite songs. Dope video, thanks for the info.
+Phoenix Moore definitely a phenomenal instrumental, DOOM is a master! Glad you liked the video!!
Binge watched a couple of your videos. Very cool. Getting a Mju-II tomorrow for the equivalent of 10USD. Hope it lives up to your review.
+Reg Ranada that's super exciting, you found one for an incredible price! Hope you love the camera!!!
The photos always come out because it has a built in digital light meter. I have the stylus epic limited.
+Bricklinsv1970 and it always gets the exposure spot on! It's a truly incredible camera!
+Mike Janik I just posted it on eBay just to give you a heads up. Extremely sought after

:) I'll see if I can send u some if I have developed them!
I have one of these! I think it's a little older though. My mom used it for years...i'm thinking about popping into walgreens and getting a new battery and some film.
+ModernDinosaur absolutely go and do that! Once you start shooting with it you'll never want to put it down!
Can u show us some photos taken on it
Dude, your vids are awesome, keep making more vids!
They're on the way my guy, new vid this week!
I prefer black over gold tbh
Just picked up two of the deluxe versions for 50 cents a piece at a thrift store!! Score!
I'm going to give shooting on film a try after shooting all digital
for years. I got an AE-1p with a bunch of FD lenses now, and remembered I
had one of these baby's tucked away. Now that I know I've also got this little
pocket monster I'm going to load it up too and start hitting the streets
with it as well.
+Craig McKernan I'm very glad to hear that!! Let me know how it goes, I'd love to see the photos you snap with the Stylus!
Olympus Style Epic or Olympus XA?
Epic.
But ya can't do double exposures with the Style Epic right? There's no manual thumb reel
Correct, it's auto wind.
+Mike Janik I've only had mine for a couple of weeks, so I can't really comment. No issues so far. It seems pretty rugged.
Just paid 200 for the deluxe version of this. Couldnt find it anywhere except ebay, hope its worth it
Are there any major differences between the stylus epic and the epic delux?
+Quinn Hendrick not to my knowledge, just think the deluxe has a fake panorama mode!
I'm having a hard time choosing between the canon a-1 or the olympus mju ii stylus epic
I had the 35-70 zoom version. Great small camera but the lens did have vigneting(can't spell it).
sexysilversurfer yeah the zoom versions have significantly worse image quality than the mju 2, still fun cameras though
I really really want one but I can't seem to find it anywhere that isn't a sketchy third-party seller - any suggestions?
Leica Minilux 40mm...I'm having a BLAST with it.
AWESOME camera! Enjoy it!
Just got a champagne color for 6 bucks. $13 for a 2 pack of 123 3v batteries. Works great
I love ittt I can't wait to use mine
Would you usually leave the flash on or turn it off
how would you say this camera compares to the infinity af?
This Olympus stylus zoom 115 a good camera ..???
Hell yea DOOM
would th olympus stylus epic zoom 115 be the same as a regular stylus epic?? any major differences? love you channel btw. subscribed immediately
+Dablob1000 or the zoom 80? is yours just the regular stylus epic??
Dablob1000 that's fantastic!! So stoked to hear what you think of it, would love to see the photos you get back from it!
Hi! I'm new to the camera gear team and was wondering if the Olympus stylus epic is different from the Olympus infinity style? Thank you!
Awesome video! I'm selling mine right now and currently looking for another one to personally use. Love the Olympus boys shirt. Where did you get it?
what do you recomment more - the stylus epic or the xa? don't know which one I should get. help
Is there an option to turn the flash off?
mju ii or xa?? cant decide which to go for
+Sam Wood that's a really bloody difficult question.
I'll be honest, none of the zoom variants are anywhere near as good as the fixed 35mm Stylus Epic.
Mike Janik Photo quality wise or portability / look wise?
Image-wise. The lenses aren't so hot.
Solid Review. Convinced me to buy one and sub. Now where can I get one of these Olympus Boys shirts?
+Cullen Arroyo appreciate it my dude! NIGHTED made the shirts a couple years back, they've been gone for a while now. You should head over to their site and support these cats anyway nighted.storenvy.com
Really looking for a Stylus Epic, got a Stylus Infinity, but the film door's broken... :(
+Corey Meath that brings a tear to my eye! Wishing you all the best on your hunt for the Stylus Epic, you'll love the camera!!
go on amazon and get one
Hi Mike if you had to choose between this and the Olympus xa, which would you choose?
Wish I could find one of these for $35 in the year 2017
Joel. I have faith in you. You can do this, my boy.
Classic
Mike, can you please do a video on how to get your photos onto your computer and whether or not you edit them?
If there's a Minolta Gang and Olympus Boyz what's the Canon group?
I found one of these in my grandmas garage the battery is dead and I need to buy film but I hope it works
can u use 50 ISO film with this camera
Thanks man! I just saw that and that's what I was going to do.
which one would you recommend more, the stylus epic or the xa?
Just picked this model up at the thrift store for $2. So. Happy.
That's an incredible find, congratulations!!! Have you managed to put some film through the camera yet??
Mike Janik I have! I'm hoping to get it developed some time this week. I also picked up the Stylus 80 insanely cheap! Really excited
where can i get one
pretty kickass review! Was on the fence about buying, but 2 mins in I was already sold. Question though, is the mju ll the same as this one?
+Samantha Reyes that's lit! I'm sure you'll love it! And yes, the mju II is the same as the Stylus Epic - the European market's version is called the mju II and the American market's version is the Stylus Epic. Same camera, same components, just a different name depending on region!
small baby
Is there anyway to keep the date from being printed on the front of all pics?
You gotta tell us where to get that shirt
how do you go about focusing this thing?
+toby stick land it's autofocus! Just point it at whatever you want to shoot and it does the rest.
Link to the t-shirt please, cant find it anywhere
Found one today for $40 at the local camera store 😈
I was wondering how you put the strap on? I just got one from a friend and it doesn't have something to put a strap on. I just got it and I haven't developed any rolls yet, I can't wait! But do you have any suggestions to put a strap on?
Tristan
+Tristan Hirsch I looped it through the hinge that the film back flips out on! Enjoy the camera!!
just bought a used one on ebay! :-) thanks for this review.
That's awesome, enjoy the camera!
great vid my friend.
+Parker Boyez thank you homie, means a lot!
Hey Mike, I was wondering if the auto-loading operate when you just open and close the back cover without actually loading a roll of film?
Nope, it doesn't! It'll only operate when the camera detects film inside.
Hi, I was wondering how do you turn off the date stamp feature on this camera?
