  • Episode 5 of 50! These are the best sounding records in my collection. A brief history of the album followed by my recommended pressing which provides incredible sound quality and SATISFACTION.
I love the DIY nature and sound of this EP which was recorded in the garage of Mitch Easter's parents home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Tim, I'm going to make you cry! I grew up in Conover, NC 45 mins west of WSalem. I went to college my 1st 2 years at WVU 1981-83,(my parents wish, not mine). My boyfriend was from Gaithersburg,MD and I went home one weekend and we went to a place called The Ott House Pub. Live music on Saturday night, and had 2 bands scheduled, both from Athens, GA. The 1st were 4 guys named REM, they were promoting Chronic Town. I paid $5 for it, but it ended up costing me close to$15 because I bought all 4 guys a beer. I told them I was from NC and that I really liked their sound. That was the beginning of my REM journey....and yes, I have one of their 1st pressings! Thanks for bringing back a great memory, great album, good times, and reminding me how old I am!! Oh, and BTW, the other group who followed was a zanny group that blew my mind, never saw anything like them....The B'52's. As ever, your NC follower who now resides in Roanoke, VA, Carole!

Hi Carole - love it! I think I remember you sharing this story before! Memories like this are like Gold - I’m sure hearing Chronic Town and Murmur bring you right back to those early days. I
never saw the band live until ‘99 at the Montreux Jazz Fest on the Up tour. At that point, Bill Berry had left the band and had returned to Athens. 👍🏻

Not sure if I mentioned an album I just got! The Notting Hillbillies, wow, great recording. Of course Mark Knopler stands out in this album but the rest of the musicians are stellar! Every song is good type album. Great late night low volume listening also!

Very nice Tim! You know, even though I do have the 1st US pressings of their first few albums, I've honestly never heard of this one. I don't know what rock I've been under 😁 But, I sampled it online and you know I REALLY like it. I really dig the moody way the vocals sound and yes, the drumming is fantastic! I think this may turn out to be my favourite R.E.M. album. I like the early, raw, more New Wavish sound and find the arrangements MUCH more engaging than their far blander later sound where it's all about his voice and not much else. Thanks Tim for this one, I will be keeping a lookout for this EP thanks to you!

OMD 1980 debut U.S. SRC pressing. I dug out a minty promo, I didn't realize I had. It's loud and very detailed. Mastered by Greg Fulginiti.
I have a nice Chronic Town gargoyle (promo stamped) pressing....sound is no different from a silver IRS IMO.
