    I use to work at a major fan manufacturer and saw the aerodynamics involved explained to me, the fan blades are precision designed to slice the air efficiently and quietly to the weight & properties of the materials used. By adding paint on the blades even a thin layer its changing the properties of the air slicing and surface friction and all engineering thats gone in to the blade shape and weighting. I dread to think of taking a top engineered fan and slapping paint on it.

    • @CPUmodder
      @CPUmodder  8 лет назад +6

      +Sandra Wayne thanks for the explanation, i knew that something would unbalance but you have cleared it up. I do agree that it is not the best for the fan but for systems that are either for show or don't have a long life expediency then i guess looks come before anything else. But again, thanks :)

    • @AJediSurvivor
      @AJediSurvivor 6 лет назад +1

      If you have cheap fans then sure enough, go ahead and do you want with them. I did it with stock case fans and they lasted years. I would never do it on expensive fans though lol

  • @ScytheNoire

    I'd add a few items:
    1) Use some alcohol to clean the surface first. It's been in use, take extra care to remove all dust.
    2) Use a hair dryer to warm up the label for easier removal.
    3) Consider printing your own centre labels, it can really make it look unique. Lots of self-printing places.
    4) Be patient, painting properly takes time.
    5) Read the instructions.
    6) If you use Plasti-Dip, which is awesome stuff, warm it up in hot water first, and shake the hell out of it.
    7) To speed up the curing, bake it. My preferred method is a large empty box with only one end open, using a small ceramic space heater. Won't get hot enough to start a fire, but will speed up curing a lot. Caution, metal parts will be really hot afterwards.
    8) Patients, cannot stress this enough.
    9) For really good look, after a few coats and proper curing, perform light wet sanding (1000+ grit), and apply more light coats.

    Not a good idea, paint adds weight to the fans and creates unwanted drag. This result in lower RPM and a lower life span for the motor.... so at ur ownrisk people

      One uneven layer and it'll throw the fan off. If you think about how many times the fan will spin over it's lifetime, it WILL mess up the far over time.

      No it's probably because the over exertion of energy and the way he speaks is too similar to that weird guy on the sports channel (or most other youtubers) so it all comes across as disingenuous and feels like he isn't being himself. Oh and I would also say that annoying introduction with the techno music that every single tech channel has. It makes me cringe every time I see one.

      painting noctua blades causes them to seriously unbalance and raises the db noticably. painted the nf-12's and the fan on the nhl9a. the 12 went from damn near silent to sounding like a case fan running full tilt and the 9a fan went from whisper quit off of the heatsink and a soft purr on to sounding like an old am2 heatsink fan running full boar. tested the 12s on the case and the 9a fan on the included heatsink. all inside a be quit! dark base pro 900. however the outside edge painted 12s are running just fine however i only painted the outside channels i refrained from painting the interior area because i figured it would distort the wind profile.

      @99sports64 5 лет назад

      I know this is random but if anybody is still reading this comment section and thinking about doing this, this comment is incorrect and the method shown in the video is correct. Cars are mostly comprised of straight panels, fans are not. Different angles and shapes of the blades makes the technique a little different.
      Not trashing on the commenter, just clearing up misinformation.

    • @CPUmodder
      @CPUmodder  8 лет назад

      +abdullah redwan depends on your measurement. if you are going to be testing it under lab conditions then yeah it will make a difference, but if you are putting it in your pc, you should see little to no difference in cooling performance. maybe 3-4 rpm difference but really not that much to note. do keep in mind this can also decrease the life of the fan, not by much if done right but there will be a very slight decrease. something like 5 years in stead of 6 year life span as an example

    You should NEVER do this.. You are teaching bad methods...... You should never ever.. paint your fans.. The people in the comments saying it wont actually make that big of a difference or it isnt bad for your fans have simply never actually tested this.. I have. It definitely causes drag and vibration.. making the fan heavier as well.. causing them to use more power.. more power is more thermal heat.. more thermal heat = bad. Also, if you DO plan to do this.. at least take the proper steps and take your time and prepare your surface correctly. Sanding helps the paint adhere to the plastic. Also, you need to prime it with PLASTIC PRIMER. making sure you let it dry completely after 2 light coats and your 3rd coat a little heavier.
    The amount of paint you used on the very first coat gave me anxiety.. there was no real method.. Almost like your going as fast as you can only to make content for the channel quickly... Teaching inproper techniques is the same thing as spreading false knowledge.. It only hurts the people wanting to learn.
    With all of that being said.. it does like half way nice.. Not being rude. Just trying to make sure somoene who is curious about doing this has some proper info
