Hey Melinda, I really enjoyed this video. I recently decided to upgrade my early 70s Pioneer turntable which was having a few issues. I went and bought a new, modern deck and spent around £600 GBP. I wasn't overly impressed. I decided that the upshift in cost wasn't apparent and justified in what I was hearing and so I decided to give a little TLC to my old Pioneer. I found a local enthusiastic repair guy and he fixed all the issues, gave it a general service and fitted a new Ortofon Red cartridge and stylus. I'm now back in love with it! It feels extra special as well that I was able yo keep her going as well. At around 50 years old it's still able to play very well. I also like the fact that its story continues. There's definitely something to be said about caring about and valuing items that are still fit for purpose and not just getting rid. I will eventually upgrade at some point in ny life (I'm 57) and I have always fancied a Linn Sondec or similar for around £3,000. Hopefully some day. Keep making the videos and good luck with tge furniture etc
I've used a Pioneer pl518 for several years. I put on a SoundSmith Otello cartridge, a better tt mat, better feet and a record clamp over that time. That tt sounded pretty good, but not great. I had a Pro-ject Perspective with a bad tonearm for about 20 years. I brought it out, replaced the tonearm with a new in box carbon fiber tonearm, new belt, much cleaning and fiddling to get it working well and put the Otello on. It is just better. Better frequency response across the board, better dynamics, better soundstage. The Pioneer is a pretty good tt, but not in the same league. Thanks for your video.
Hi, Melinda. What wonderful foresight you have to pack and move your music given the delay you’re experiencing with the rest of your household belongings. I’m sure too that the rest will arrive in a day or two. It’s in everyone’s best interest that it does. Like you, I love the new digital technology and appreciate the great analogue sound we grew up on. And I love the way the older music carries me back to earlier times. My love for the music of the 60s and 70s has kept me young at heart, and the remastered and even remixed reissues of today make the classics sound as if they were made this year. It’s just a great time to revisit the music we grew up on and that carried us through our youth. You look as though you have an amazing record collection. What a joy it must be for you. Congrats on your move to sunny Florida and this new chapter in you and your family’s life.
Thank you Melinda. Hope you get your stuff soon. As a non audio filei did get a Flaunce rt85, and the speakers. Love it. But agree it is what you like.
I'm not an audiophile either or at least I do not accept that label, but have been called that plenty of times. (I have been into audio for 40+ years). I hear those Fluance tables are quite good actually. I'd be interested in picking one up myself if I could accept belt drives and needed a table).
I have vintage equipment, and none of my friends/relatives even have stereos anymore. I need to literally pack up my stereo, some records and drag it to an audio store that will play side by side equipment to convince me I should spend thousands to upgrade my equipment. How much thousands to reach a wow moment? Marginal quality improvements aren't justifiable for me. Listening to music on RUclips is not doing to differentiate it for me. If I won a lottery I probably wood build a room and spend frivolously. I am VERY conservative with my money. I hope you get your furniture sorted with this company. I have seen some shows exposing companies that do various things...I hope it works out. You're a great person and as always this is another great video
You definitely would want to hear a huge difference in sound quality before spending big money on new equipment. It's smart to be conservative with your hard earned money. 🤗❤️ Thank you and take care.
"none of my friends even have stereos" - it may be even worse. In my country most people under 30 just don't listen to music, any music, it's not part of their world. Fifty years ago, when my generation grew up, probably one kid out of five was somehow involved, today it's probably one in a hundred.
@@jmialtacct what country are you from? Here in the states I would say streaming music is the most popular way to consume music these days. Plus the kids aren’t into expensive audio equipment. They play music from their phones with earbuds or headphones. Which can sound good. But, it’s not like sitting in front of your HiFi playing your music on your TT, CD player or even these days your cassette deck. Reading liner notes and just smelling a newly opened CD.
I have a Pioneer PL-516 and PL-540. The 516 is like a bac up or for sale. My 540 is my baby. It is a DD turntable, and I can't praise it enough. It has a Nagaoka MP-110 cartridge with an elliptical stylus, and the sound is amazing. All the warmth and brilliance I remember when I bought the PL-540 new. This 540 is a replacement...😊
I have a Marantz 6300 direct drive TT. With a Shure M44-7 high output stylus and a Marantz integrated Amplifier with JBL speakers 🔊 and I think my HiFi sounds great. The best…no. But, it’s a classic analog HiFi.

When I was 22, I bought a new Denon DP 59 L. Now, 37!!! years later, this machine is still running and it still sounds great and I swear, it never ever needed any repairs at all. What else can I say, except...... best wishes for your furniture matters👍
You can't beat that track record. You made a very wise decision 37 years ago. ❤️🤗 I appreciate your kind words. I'm so ready to get our furniture and belongings and start making our house a home. Thank you and take care. 🤗❤️
Awesome! I bought a Technics SL-3300 turntable back in 1979 and it still works perfectly! I just did the math, it is 45 years old and still enjoying it. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine it would last that long. Enjoy the music.
@@Vintageelectronics2296 I’ve only had one record player in my life. It’s a Marantz 6300 direct drive. I have a Shure M44-7 cartridge/stylus on it and it sounds great too. I know it’s not the best TT but, it’s been working for 47 years now and I have no complaints.
Do y’all remember the day when you bought your stereo, your speakers and record player and just played your records? We didn’t worry about anything other than what record we were playing next. Just the old analog stereo system? I still pretty much have the same thing now. Just totally analog. Except for my CD player. And yes, I still love CDs.
You mentioned going back to the “Summer of 1977”; so many times I say the same thing! Aside from the passing of the King of Rock, that was the best of times for me and on into and through until 1980. Great music and MUCH simpler times; LOTS of fun! Great video!
I just picked up 3 turntables at a yard sale for very little money 2 Pioneer and a Technics all from the late 1970's all needed needles but all in working condition. All play and sound great with the new needles Granted it's not a 4,000 dollar turntable by any means however for what they are they sound and play great . Good video Melinda hope you get your furniture and things soon and in good shape. Enjoy the new location and home
That's wonderful! It's so nice that there are still great deals like that out there and it's so cool that you are saving them. 🤗❤️ Thank you and take care.
Wonderful video! You were the one who inspired me to take the plunge for the P8, and absolutely love it! Last night I took my MoFi Moody Blues for a spin on it and it was glorious! Though I still haven't figured out what the knights in white sat in...
Haha! Love that! I'm so glad you are happy with the P8. It's not cheap but it takes listening to another level. The MoFi Days of Future's Passed is wonderful. 🔥❤️ Thank you and take care.
My vintage is a Pioneer PL 518 with an Ortofon Red cart and my new one is a Music Hall Classic with an Ortofon Blue cart. The Music Hall is definitely a noticeable upgrade (I admit it could be the cartridge upgrade). I still have the Pioneer with a smaller system in a different room and it plays very well and I will keep it, I got it a few years ago for $90.00. My main system is the Music Hall TT, Sansui G-5500 receiver and a pair of highly modified Kenwood speakers. Good luck with your movers, it must be frustrating for you guys! As always, another great video!
Thank you for the kind words. ❤️🤗 I remember going from an Ortofon Red to Blue and hearing a pretty big difference. The Ortofon brand is great. Take care.
I am sure, you will be find the right area for your music room. Wonderfull minutes to hear you speaking about music and HiFi. Lovely greetings from Cologne/Germany.
It's fun to campare the sound of a Pioneer turntable and the Rega and enjoy the music.I have a high end VPI turntable their expensive but it does have a great sound.I am glad that you enjoy it Melinda.
Melinda, we are so sorry you and your husband are dealing with movers like this. Three weeks?! We commend you for making videos during this progress, truly amazing. Thank you for sharing your experience!🙏🏻🎧
Thank you for the kind words. We got an update this morning that our furniture will be here in a week. I hope they are telling us the truth. Lol. That's way too long but I will take it at this point. Thank you and take care. 🤗❤️
So sorry for your issues with the movers. They deserve the review you will be giving them, especially since they aren't being transparent with your items. Regarding vintage vs. new turntables, many of the older ones were very sturdy and play well, but then you have to deal with finding replacing parts. I agree the newer TTs have better technology, but the costs for an excellent one is usually pretty high, so pros & cons for each. Right now I'm happy with my vintage, still standing, Denon DP-1200, but I may go to a newer TT when I can afford it. Take care.
Great choices on the albums you picked to test the sounds! And nice shirt too! I fall somewhere in the middle too when it comes to the old school vs new school discussion. I love how the new stuff has technology to help us hear more detail, while there is still great sounding vintage stuff that still holds up. At some point I do want to get a new turntable…a big part of the fun of record collecting is the listening experience!
My daily driver is a Pro-ject 2xperience Classic. A while back I had it in the shop for service so I hooked up my Victrola Revolution Go by wire to my system. My thought at the time was, if I weren’t used to a better TT I wouldn’t know what I was missing. Yet I bet there is more of a gap between my Pro-ject and your Rega. There sure are levels to this game but once you get past the “suitcase with red cart” they’re all pretty fun.
I have that AP Ted Nugent album and, you're right. it does kick ass! I bought a Technics SA-500 receiver back when I was in the Air Force brand new and I lost it in a fire in 1984. Bought another one off of Ebay a few years ago and had it refurbed. It now sounds as good as when I had the new one. You just can't beat those vintage receivers and some of the turntables and speakers are still viable to this day as well.
I'm so glad you were able to replace what had been taken from you. The fire must have been traumatic but I'm glad you were able to replace that incredible receiver. The AP Ted Nugent album is unbelievable. ❤️🔥 Thank you and take care.
Still have my original pressing of 1984..bought during my senior year in high school...great memories...what an album! Played on my brother's Technics turntable...which he still has.
Melinda, your topic today is so perfect for a choice I just made about my vinyl system. In about 1980 I spent all my student loan money (foolishly) on a turntable. The turntable has been called a poor man's Linn. The table is a Systemdek IIX in case you are interested. I have kept it while moving numerous times even when the years when I was consulting in the USA (I'm Canadian). I posted on one of the forums asking if my turntable is worth upgrading. The response was that the basic table performance is like a Rega P6 or P8, its weakness being its tonearm. To make the story short I've found I can upgrade a piece at a time to remake the turntable into something modern. I've chosen a tonearm ($1500US), a new DC motor/controller ($400), and a cartridge ($500US). In the end I'll spend less money and I'll have something that performs like a Rega P6 or P8 that is unique that I don't think I'll ever sell. PS: I love your channel and I eagerly anticipate your videos.
Oh wow! How smart of you to hang on to that turntable. I'm sure you will be very happy with the new upgrades. Thank you so much for the kind words. Take care. 🤗❤️
@@MelindaMurphy The truth is that I have always liked how it sounds. Why I like it so much is that its platter/motor and arm board is suspended from a set of springs so that it is resistant to things like footsteps. Shocks and vibration that are very noticeable on other turntables are only heard when they would make the needle skip on a Rega. Other turntables that have that technology start at $10000US, like the Linn that I mentioned above. That's why I have never bought anything to replace it!
Great video Melinda! I can say you can’t go wrong with a vintage turntable. I have a total of 4 turntables. 3 Technics, SL 2000, SL Q3, SL 1200 MK II. Pro-Ject RPM 3 Carbon. You’re right about moving the speakers around to get the best sound. I’m sorry to hear about your experience with the movers. I’d definitely leave a bad review.
They are going to get the worst possible review one can give. We paid so much money for the convenience of using them and this has been anything but. I love vintage gear and it sounds like you have some amazing equipment. 🔥 We still have more work to do in the music room but it is definitely the bright spot in our home right now. 🤗❤️ Thank you and take care.
I totally get what you’re saying about speaker 🔈 positioning. Because in my music room. They’re spots where I get a better sound and more bass. I’m thinking about getting some of those sound panelling things. To make better sound in my room.
When I was a kid music systems looked like furniture - they called them consoles with AM-FM and 12" speakers which gave us really good bass - I remember stacking 45s on a spindle and listening to 6 singles in a row so it wasn't all bad and gave me a good ear for today's technology which I fully support - today needle/cartridges are better, the vinyls nice and thick, turntables are better calibrated, speakers have become huge with subwoofers improving the listening experience equal to live performance - I fully support reissues and first pressings depending on the record - hope your furniture is delivered - it's a shame after doing the research that they fail but hope for the best - Great video Melinda❤See you next week!
I agree with your assessment. Vintage gear is great but the modern technology is amazing. The cartridges of today are incredible and I really enjoy my modern set up. I do wish we could have some of the charm of vintage furniture mixed in with today's technology. Thank you and take care. 🤗❤️
Your journey with gear and the music has been so fascinating over the years you have been on youtube Melinda its been great to watch. Now you and your husband have started a new chapter in life that will create some great content Im sure, new record stores and getting your room tuned just right. Such a shame about the movers and their attitude change towards the whole move. The Rega P8 has proved its worth in many reviews my Hifi guy has shown me it on a few occasions now tempting but not yet lol.
The P8 is a great turntable. I'm glad to have it. I appreciate your kind words. This hobby has put me on a very fun journey and I am beyond excited about the music room and all of the possibilities. We're going to keep working on the equipment positioning. Hopefully, the movers will come soon and we can start living a normal life again. Thank you and take care. 🤗❤️
There she isssssssssssss and speaking of Turntables I just got a Rega P3 with an Ortofon 2M Blue a few months old from a previous turn table and Woooow P3 sounds Awesomeee with the 2M Blue. My First New Turntable . Previous turntables AR Modded better arm and modded underneath and an Nad / Rega Turntable and now Rega P3 and watching previous videos you and your husband discussing turntables sure helped alot.
That's a great turntable and the Ortofon Blue is so nice. I could immediately hear a big difference just by upgrading from an Ortofon Red to Blue. 🤗❤️ Congrats and enjoy hearing your favorite albums in a completely new way. 🔥 Thank you and take care.
Thanks Melinda, loved the comparison video on your two turntables. Really something to think about. I use to own that Pioneer turntable in the 70’s but got rid of it when CD’s came around. Right now I have the top Audio Technica hopefully someday I will upgrade. Hope your furniture and belongings arrive soon. Can’t wait to see the couch and table for your music room. Take it easy and enjoy your records.
Thank you for the kind words. This Pioneer turntable is pretty solid for the price. It plays my records and is very affordable. ❤️🤗 I really hope we get our furniture soon. This is very hard. Thank you and take care.
Sounds like your music room is coming together! That’s a cool experience with playing both of your turntables. I like vintage, but for my turntable, I have a Audio-Technica AT-LP140XP which is modern. I was able to update the stylus and I’m very happy with it. But later on I would like to get a vintage Dual turntable. A few of my amplifiers and receivers have an option to hook up two turntables. I’m sorry to hear that you haven’t got your things from the movers yet. That’s ridiculous! Hopefully you get it soon, and you can move on from this nightmare.
Those stylus upgrades make a huge difference. I bet you are very happy with that. ❤️🤗 The movers are now scheduled to come next week. That makes it a 4 week wait time if that even happens. It's frustrating but that gives me a glimmer of hope. Thank you and take care. 😃
Amazing record player I love the look of it I'm a lover of record players I love the background shelves of records I can tell the difference of living between Kentucky and Florida the difference in the background great video Melinda I love the videos you make because you tell great stories about the past and the present take care and have a blessed Tuesday
Cool shirt, going to Def Leppard, Journey, Steve Miller concert this Sun in LA. Monday night saw Sammy Hagar VH tribute show w Michael Anthony , Joe Satriani and Jason Bonham. Awesome show !!
I really want to see that Mike and Sammy tour. I hope they have another wing of it and come to Florida. 🤗❤️ The other concert would be amazing too. Enjoy. Thank you and take care.
Hello Melinda ! Talking about old vs new turntables , I have very fond memories of my first stereo. It was a gigantic Sharp GS 5600. Made out of wood and with a thick , heavy glass lid and matching speakers. I had it until I moved out at 17 , when I bought a much ”cooler” compact system , and my younger sister took it over. Then my other sister , then our cousin , then another cousin until it finally vanished in a yard sale. I’ve tried to track it down , believe me , but to no avail. If I could , I’d kick my own behind. It had such a great sound , ”But it was monstrously ugly” (read that with a mocking voice in your head). It would’ve looked awesome in our music room now. Take care ! A&R
I had to give away my mom's old console and I kind of regret it now too. I love the old furniture set ups like that. They are very cool. My mom's console kept breaking down and was becoming too troublesome unfortunately. My niece has it now and I don't know what will happen to it in the future. I will always remember it fondly just like you do with yours. ❤️ Hopefully, my niece hangs on to it for a long time. Thank you and take care.
my parents have the 70s zenith ttable 8 track radio in h.s. ww moved they gave to dads friend a local man restores consoles them adds mp3 bluetooth new cartridge had 2 like 1200 1500nreally nice id love to have one i saw one like parents had on the back of a demo record actually had good sound
Got your house, your husband and your records + something to play em on . All is good :) Don't be upset for what you don't have , be thankful for what you got .
Melinda, glad to hear from you, with another interesting video! It’s an endless debate amongst some of us…what matters more, the cartridge or the turntable? It would have been interesting to see what kind of results you would have gotten, if you had swapped the cartridges. Maybe a quick future video? I have owned at least 50 turntables over the years; modern and vintage. I lean towards vintage, but one thing is very clear to me… at any price point ($200, $1000, $4000, etc), you will get a better built, longer lasting, probably better sounding turntable, when you buy vintage. Of course, sometimes they do need a little bit of servicing to bring them back 😊. Thanks for all the wonderful videos the past few years, and here’s hoping those moving bozos get you your stuff soon! Take care, Pat
Switching cartridges would be a fun video and the cartridge does make a huge difference. The point of my video was that you can have a standard set up or you can have a more expensive set up and enjoy the music either way. 🤗❤️ It's great that you have the knowledge to repair the vintage equipment. That's the reason vintage equipment still exists and is still enjoyed. Thank you and take care.
Hey Melinda, I am a vintage guy all the way.. I have a entry level 1978 PS-T15 Sony direct drive TT in excellent condition & a 1977 Pioneer PL-530 direct drive TT also in excellent condition... I also hot a 2015 Pro-Ject TT, but nothing overly expensive.... I Just love the look, the quality of those old TTS and the nostalgia that they bring... I remember listening to the PL-530 when I was a young kid with my mom....
Melinda, my take on turntables is that the cartridge makes the sound, and the turntable, if it doesn't have any mechanical issues that limit its abity to keep the cartridge in the groove, has little impact on the sound. So, following this logic, your comparison was really between the cartridge on the PL-516 and the Rega. It would be interesting to hear how the PL-516 sounds with the cartridge on your Rega (and vice-versa). Would you be willing to do this comparison? I think it would be enlightening to your subscribers. I personally own a PL-518 from 1978 (I bought it and the cartridge new) with a vintage Shure V-15 type IV cartridge, and it sounds very nice, especially when playing high end pressings. I'm not sure I could hear any difference if I had a turntable costing many thousands. And for reference, I spent quite a bit more on my cartridge than I did on my turntable. If money were no object, I would keep what I have or buy a new (modern) cartridge when my stylus wears out, but that'll be a sad day.
if it was like you said , one would buy the cheapest turntable and a good cartridge but see what that does with pro-Ject turntables till a litle more than 1.000€ if in dollars, add a couple of hundreds and notice the worst sound ever or maybe unheardable if not a 100 watts amplifier real ones not (DIN) or 2ohms or whaever they do to lie about the quality of what they´re selling, old turntables if you take them apart there is a litle integrated circuit with some resistances, electrolic capaciteurs and just regular capaciteurs to drive the sound readen`by the stylus and through the cartridge converted in a better signal to the litle integrated board to which the RCA plugs are conected to, it´s the same of having a very good turntable and conected a cheap cartridge and stylus and it will not sound so bad as in modern cheap turntables , well till 1.000 €´s, the other day i bought for 65€ a pioneer PL-430 D.D. ,released first in 83 in caqui colour but this was black and the frame is plastic but under it´s a heavy iron base to the turntable itself who´s made of metal too, this to a kid who´s father died when he was a baby and was a friend of mine. He wanted to hear is perfectelly kept ,father´s records so i helped him to buy a cheap but good sounding system , his father system was out of this world good , but his mother needing money sold it very cheap , not to blame she didn´t knew what she had at home and needed money fast , if she had asked me at the time i would had given her whatever she needed, but people think that others aren´t being truthfull when they say "if you need something , call me i´ll help you", this Pioneer is sold cheap if still available for sale and with a cheap audio-technica old cartridge sounds not one not two but 1.000 X better than any Pro-Ject till around 1.000€ with a Ortofon 2M RED
@@jefftobin4034 I agree with you. I think the cartridge and stylus is the most important part of your TT. Of course the tone arm. But the stylus is what makes your record sound great or terrible. I’m currently using a high output Shure M44-7 yes it’s a DJ stylus but I play a lot of dance music and Alternative Music. so it’s prefect for what I need. I have a 47 year old Marantz 6300 direct drive record player.
I have my current modern setup which sounds great (project, klipsch gear etc. along with my first system I bought as a young kid back in the early 70's which consisted of a kenwood receiver, bsr turntable, pioneer speakers and a bell and howell casette deck. Both sound great. There is a big difference of course but the old set up reminds me of the days of my youth with great memories.
@@jamescurcio4852 Same here, in my case with a 1978 Sony amplifier and tuner with wooden side panels and National Panasonic speakers. I replaced a Philips turntable and Akai reel-to-reel tape deck with a laptop and DAC, but the sound is as it has always been. It's so nice to have your own first good HiFi sound of the seventies still playing, taking you back into those memories.
My Thorens TD166 mk2 works as good now as it did when I bought in 1985. It's a belt-drive machine and fully manual. I do get "upgrade" fever from time to time but haven't yet made a move. The Thorens has outlived two CD players and will most likely outlive a third.
That's awesome! You have had that turntable since I was a freshman in high school. Lol. How's that for making one feel old? 😄 I love that you have kept it for all this time and that it has served you so well. Thank you and take care. 🤗❤️
@@MarkMiller-i8q I’m still using my 47 year old Marantz 6300 direct drive Phonograph. And it works great. Plus it’s really pretty. With the wood and polished aluminum. I have no reason to upgrade. I have a simple Marantz integrated amplifier all analog, a marantz CD recorder, a Kenwood dual cassette deck and two JBL speakers 🔊. It works for me. I don’t need a subwoofer either.
Just read through most of the posts here. Request: when you do post what cartridges you used for your comparison, please do so in your info at the top so it’s easy to find (vs plowing thru all the posts again). Love your vids. Good luck with your move. And…I do believe that carts are generally better now, ultimately it’s the synergy between cart, arm, and table that makes for “better” or “worse” playback.
My current fulltime turntable is a Fluance RT82 with the Orotofon OM10 cartridge. I love it, but I can't get myself to part with my old Hitatchi HT-1. It has a lot of sentimental value as well as it's the first turntable I ever bought way back in 1984 (when I was 14)! When I was 16, I upgraded the standard P-mount cartridge it came with to a Shure M111HE. About two years ago I took it out of storage, put a new belt on it, and it played beautifully. Even though it's a really basic old turntable, with the better cartridge, it really gave my Fluance good run for it's money! This is comparing a low-end to a mid-end turntable. The edge did go to the Fluance, but as for the Hitachi? It's still a keeper! Great videos Melinda! Take care.
Those older turntables are nostalgic and with a little tlc, they still have some life left in them. It's great to have both turntables and it's so great that you have kept the Hitatchi for all of this time. Thank you and take care.
I have over 15 turntables in the living room I have a fluance 85 and I like it. In my music room I have a Technics 1600 Mk fully automatic and it’s my favorite. The rest I’m going to use as decoration throughout the house
Oh wow! I love the idea of using turntables as decor. ❤️🤗 You have such an amazing collection of records. I'm not surprised that your stereo equipment matches that. Thank you and take care.
Greetings Melinda from, Liverpool ,!! 🏴🇬🇧.. I still love my P8 and like you, I had to unplug my hifi for four months and only just got it up and running again and it doesn’t sound like it was right now but a few tweaks here and there and my Naim amp being left on, all should be fine. Great video m’lady, hope your belongings arrive soon😎👍👍
No doubt. You are definitely an Analog person and there's nothing wrong with that!😊 Enjoying the music is what this hobby should be all about. I have a high-end TT and pretty good cartridge and still enjoy my albums. I am heavy into streaming now and enjoy the convenience, and with my setup, pretty great sq. The biggest plus from streaming for me is exposure to new artists and music. Happy Listening!
@@emanuelduke701 I stream a lot too. I also have Sirius XM. I’m mostly into current music. I have a lot of records, CDs and cassettes. I love buying new music. But, there’s the convenience of streaming that I love. I consider myself a pioneer of streaming. Since I’ve had Spotify since 2012. But, I do love playing records and owning my music. I also buy a lot of CDs and new cassettes. Because cassettes are making a comeback. I still have a cassette deck. So I can make a mixtape 📼 like the old days.
@@MelindaMurphy I definitely love the play records. I probably buy 4 new albums a month. Because I love current music. So on new music Friday I’m going up to my local independent record store and buying some new vinyl, CDs and cassettes. Or visiting a artist’s website to buy their new music. I just got my new Halsey vinyl and CD today. Also 7” 45rpm vinyl records are really popular again. Every artist is releasing their hit songs on 45s again. I have a really cool collection of new 45s.
I’m very proud if the fact that, except for the turntable, I am using the system that i purchased in 1975. The turntable i had then was broken and i had thrown away (cds were the thing). When i went back to vinyl i went vintage. I have three turntables that i use on two systems. I use a 600 sa Sanyo 1975, rp 3000 rotel 1977 and a tp1020 sanyo 1978. They were all well with in my budget and esthetic. All three sound wonderful to me. Hope you get your furniture back.
That's awesome. Even though most of my equipment is modern, I love that so many people are saving the cool vintage stereo equipment and still enjoying it. You have had yours for nearly 50 years. Fantastic! 🤗❤️
Hi Melinda, So glad to see another video from you. I hope your furniture comes soon, that is crazy waiting that long. I guess you could say I am the "Things were made better back then" But I appreciate the new gear also. I was instilled a Love Of Stereo gear and music from my Dad who has passed on. I have all Technics Stereo Components from the late 80's, use it 3 hours a day everyday and still works perfect. The Pioneer turntable you have was such a Bargain. They have been one of finest names for Audio equipment for a very long time. I am looking forward to seeing your music room finished and I am sure you are too. Do you have any Savors Thrift stores near you? They always have very cool items in there, Furniture and yes, Records too at very good prices. Stay well and take care
I love that you still use vintage gear and enjoy it. They were built to last. 🤗❤️ We were told this morning that our furniture will be delivered next week. I hope so. ❤️🤗 Thank you and take care.
My dad bought me a PL-518 was 14, sold it when i was 21. got back into records 5 years ago at the age of 54 and I had to get another pl-518 - I love it and sounds so good with upgraded cartridge/stylus. funny, I don't feel like its vintage.
@@gdavian my Marantz 6300 is almost 48 years old and it’s still chugging along. I don’t look at it being vintage either. It’s just my record player. I’ve changed up the cartridge many times over the years and I’m looking to get a JICO stylus to replace my Shure M44-7 when I have to.
Some of us might have to band together and do some head huntin if you don't get your belongings 😤 Glad you guys are getting situated the best you're able and happy to hear the lps and equipment are safe and sound.
That's so sweet. I appreciate the concern. This is extremely frustrating. We are making the most of it by doing things around the house that we had planned to do after the furniture arrived. We have hung some ceiling fans and set up the music room. I thought that might be last on the list but it became the first. Thank you and take care. 🤗❤️
i got involved in moving the belongings of people from florida who turned a friend's house into a roach motel and had 3 cops watching over my attempts to move these jokers crap. i'm one state above the state you just left and wish i could have organized sending rancid 50 ton stinkbomb of belongings on a one way trip to your mover's main headquaters. i hope things turn around for you and that when you reach 40 thousand subscibers norman maslov has to formally announce that he's been usurped in the vinyl community.
Always good to have a back-up. I have 3 turntables hooked up, all vintage, my best one Bang and Olufsen, a Sony and an old one that plays 16, 33, 45 and 78 speeds. I do have quite a few 78's and some small boxsets of 45's that are books that play at 16 speed. I have them running through a mixer so I can have them all hooked up. Nice on the Van Halen spin...I knew it would be Van Halen! Take care!
I'm pretty predictable. Even my husband knew to put on Van Halen. 😄 It's great that you have three turntables and use them often. Thank you and take care. ❤️🤗
@@MelindaMurphy I believe the cartridge and stylus are the most important part of a TT. Because this is where the sound is coming from. Also I love direct drive Record Players because, I like to change the pitch of a record. Sometimes I like to slow a record down or speed it up. Depends on the record. It’s the DJ in me. 😂
I went from a Thorens TD 145 to a totally suped up Thorens TD 125 with a Sorane tonearm. The sound difference is massive. Totally worth the money. Dave at Vinyl Nirvanna builds awesome tables!!
Melinda, I Do not recall you mentioning the cartridge on that Pioneer, I Bet if you had a $ 3 -$400 Cart. on that you would be even more impressed. Sure No P8, But your eyebrows would have been raised much more. From what I Have been learning, a Lot has to do with the Cartridge. Sure, Platter density, wow & Flutter & low noise ratio, all plays a big part as well. I Bet you are glad you & the hubby decided to move your gear & Collection yourself, can you imagine the stress you would be dealing with if not? OH MY! Ya know i Have such great memories of your old place & Your videos with that beautiful living room with the tiger picture in the background, that was a beautiful place, I Look forward to see your new Crib. So hoping to see a tour off the new place one day. & Leave the music room for last part as the icing on the cake! God Bless!
I honestly didn't even ask my husband what cartridge is on the Pioneer turntable. I made sure it was high enough quality so that my records were safe. I really just wanted to do a sound comparison between a pricey turntable and cartridge vs one that is a lot less expensive. The P8 is terrific but for what little I have invested in the Pioneer, it was good too. I still can't believe we are no longer in Kentucky and in that house. The tiger picture is still in its box because we did bring our own nicer artwork. I'm so glad we did! Lol. Thank you for the kind words. Take care.
I've heard vintage record players that have the same very thin and piercingly clear quality of a lot of those cheap new ones (like the ones by Electrohome) and also ones that have a much more rounded tone with very little crackle to be heard and a LOT more bass. I've heard the high end ones, the low end ones, the belt driven ones, the direct drive ones, and in the end they all either sound like one or the other in my experience.
Glad you are getting your audio system and media back together. You will most likely find the Rega vs Pioneer to be MUCH closer IF both units are running the same cartridge. Yes, many vintage tables can be tweeked to sound very good. With regard to new vs old in audio, in the CD or streaming areas there is no contest; the new stuff rocks big time; though, I MUCH prefer Vinyl !!!! However, many vintage tables are very good and again, with the right cart and a few tweaks they can sound amazing and then some. There are few turntables available over $200,000 and one at $650,000 which are more of an artsie statement. Your Rega with the right cart and setup can rival anything out there. This is also true of many other decent tables. If one has millions to spend, so be it but the enjoyment of music can be had for FAR LESS $'s. I have done double blind test with my $5k Well Tempered Reference and my $350, (1975 $'s) Kenwood KD 550, both having the same cart and both running the same electronics. I set the test up so no one could see which table I was running while playing the same album. The reviews were, as expected, all over the place. With the same group of people, they were all easily fooled over and over again. To be fair, I had done some tweeks to the Kenwood which did help it some. Still, the right cart on a decent table now or 50 years ago can sound amazing. AND you don't have to spend a fortune on a decent cart. I find the Micro Benze carts to sound amazingly close to less expensive Grado carts. So don't be fooled in spending north of $10,000 for cartridges, claimed to be the same ones God Almighty uses. LOL. Not sure which camp you are in, the Musicphile or Audiophile; I suspect strongly you are a hardcore Musicphile and a budding audiophile and both are fine. IMHO, we should all be more committed to being a Musicphile FIRST and for those of us like myself who are engineers or also technicians or wannabees, tweaking for every last bit of perfection is an obsession, then be both is also fine. I hope you will soon have all of your furniture and other things in your new home. Here is a link to the worlds most expensive turntables. www.digitaltrends.com/home-theater/most-expensive-turntables/ G R O O V Y
I agree with you on so many things. 😀 The stylus does make a huge difference. In this comparison, I was intrigued by the difference in the prices of the turntables and the cartridges. I wanted to see if expensive equaled better sound and in this case it does. But I was also shocked at how solid the Pioneer was for such a low price. This is very encouraging for those that want to get on this hobby but don't want to get into a big expense. I'm definitely more into the music over the sound quality but you diagnosed me correctly. I'm a little bit of both. Lol. ❤️🤗 Thank you for the kind words. Take care.
I am so sorry to learn about your missing furniture and belongings. It makes me angry when bad people do bad things to good people! I am glad you kept your collection and stereo with you. I would have done the same. I enjoy all your videos and you are my favorite vinyl channel. I hope all of your stuff arrives soon.
Thank you so much for the kind words. Hopefully, the wait will be over soon. The moving company is telling us that the furniture will be here next week. I sure hope they are right. Thank you and take care. ❤️🤗
I know if you switch cartridges (put that moving coil on the Pioneer) you will get a different response. Better cartridge better sound.Could be a fun test! Great video as usual and hope you and Philip get your belongings SOON! At least you have your music. :)
Yes, the Pioneer would definitely be better with a cartridge upgrade. I was curious to know if I could hear major differences between turntable/cartridge that was pricey and something more basic and affordable. The P8 did win the sound quality shoot out but for the price, that Pioneer turntable did a great job. Thank you for the kind words. I am so happy to have my record collection. Moving it ourselves was well worth it. Thank you and take care. 🤗❤️
I had to step back for a while due to moving from Kentucky to Florida but I am starting to get back in the swing of things. I have missed our wonderful vinyl community. ❤️🤗 Thank you and take care.
As someone who buys practically all my vinyl records at yard and estate sales, I enjoyed Melinda’s take on this subject. I’m of the opinion that if you have the money and you consider yourself a true audiophile, then by all means, shell out the big bucks for the high end stereo equipment. Me however, I grew up in the era where LP records cost around 5-7 dollars new and the stereo systems we had in the 1970s and 80s played them just fine. In fact I have two stereo systems in my home all vintage equipment purchased for cheap! My bedroom system is the one I play most of my albums. It consists of a Pioneer PL-730 automatic turntable with its original cartridge ($5.00) A JVC RX-6008V Audio Video receiver ($5.00) a pair of Sony U-400 three way speakers ($10.00) and a ESS High Tech Loudspeaker System, Model 10 three way speakers ($5.00). All purchased separately at yard sales and thrift stores. Not bad for $25.00 wouldn’t you say? I agree with Melinda that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to enjoy this hobby. You just have to get up early on Saturdays and hit your local yard sales. I for one can’t justify paying big money for a “Sophisticated” sound system or new release albums. I appreciate channels like Melinda’s that keep me updated on new records that I might enjoy having in my own collection. To avoid paying what I consider high prices I simply trade in a few yard sale records that I buy for a fraction of the cost of a new album. I’m lucky I live in an area where I come across albums anywhere from a quarter to five dollars on a regular basis. And like Melinda, I enjoy sharing stories about music artists and albums I love. Hopefully when she gets her new house back in order she will return to telling us more stories about the music she loves! Finally on a silly note, I’m curious which room she will hang her Tiger painting in. Glad you’re back Melinda!
Thank you so much for the kind words. 🤗❤️ We all enjoy music at different levels and I love that you are willing to get up early on Saturdays to find inexpensive treasures. ❤️🤗 I appreciate the kind words so much. Take care.
Love the old 70’s & 80’s turntables! I found an A/T LP120USB FOR $69 in a pawn shop. Even though my Angel Horn is much newer, the A/T is what I’m using as my daily TT.
Another fun video...your husband totally gets you with using 1984 as the test record🙂 As for the movers situation, i would very quietly put feelers out for an attorney...just in case...a back up plan if you will. I do hope this company makes it right by you both without any additional fees or other malarky the company may wanna tack on as a 'conveinience fee'. I bet they will kick themselves in the rear when they discover that you have a very loyal YT community who loves your content. The comparisons though was a great idea...my personal thought is a mix...older units which have been time and use/abuse/move tested and still get the job done are great...and loads cheaper. I had bought a 77 Soundesign i found in AZ for 250 and got about a year and a half before is couldn't maintain speed...i suspect an idler wheel has a flat spot. Currently I have an AT LP120XUSB which has been flawless and am very happy with it. It's kind of the same with record condition...perfect is always preferred but having something is better then nothing...and i am really glad you guys moved your records and related stuff yourself. You at least can put a smile on your face burying yourself in music you love. Crossing my fingers for you guys in getting your furniture to you without any issues.
Thank you for the advice. The moving company says they will be delivering the furniture next week. So frustrating but I hope it does happen. They are going to get one rotten review. I have never done that before but no company deserves it more than they do. 🤗 Young people have told me that they can't afford to start a vinyl collection because of the expense. This video proves that wrong. There's a lot of good equipment out there for a reasonable price. This Pioneer turntable plays very well and would make a music lover very happy. Take care. 🤗❤️
Hey Melinda, my experiment was to compare a $400 Music Hall MMF-1.5 to a Clearaudio Concept which is similar in price to your Rega P8. Spinning Marty Robbins "Big Iron" i enjoyed the track on both tables. That said, the Clearaudio with a Talismann V2 Gold...yup.
I still have a couple of older tables in storage, but I've had no desire to go back to those. I'm so sensitive to pitch that my last newer-turntable (an absolutely wretched Pro-Ject that was second from top-of-the-line, with more problems and build quality issues than an Italian sports car) got traded in for the Technics SL-1210G. It's funny you mention this because Mike at The 'In' Groove just did a video on setting up the top Technics table (SL-1000R) and one of the reasons he decided on it was the same as mine--he wanted something that was no fuss to use. I've done a couple of modifications to mine and honestly, it's so far and away better than my older tables that I can't see ever using them again. Speed stability is the best I've heard, sound quality excellent, dead silent backgrounds, and so easy to use. My older tables were a Linn LP-12 knockoff (Walker CJ-55) and a Denon DP-1000; both fit the Grace G707-II tonearm I've had since new in 1983. I also kept my teenaged turntable, the Realistic LAB-400; speed stability was always janky (like the Denon, you could see when the direct drive motor was "pulsing" to maintain speed), but it was a great, reliable beater to play old records on, and I also modded it to play 78s. And I'm handing it down to my youngest once she has room for a system at her house, so she can at least get started on records.
Wow! It sounds like you have found the perfect turntable. It's great that you can share equipment with your children. ❤️ I still need to see Mike's video. I can only imagine how amazing that turntable is. Thank you and take care.
So it was your husband who did the honors: playing the very first song in the new music room. I was curious what it would be, but I could have guessed, a Van Halen track of course 😊. Just didn't know which one. For $30 and a small DIY fix that Pioneer turntable is a steal! Always good to give the backup a spin from time to time and not let it sit still for years. The movers seem to be amateurs when it comes to coordination of logistics - their core business. I hope you get it sorted out.
It is great to have a back up turntable and for $30 you can't beat this one. ❤️ My husband put on 1984 as the first record which is pretty fitting. 😀 We're extremely frustrated with this moving company. It's beyond ridiculous. Thank you and take care. ❤️🤗
Cartridge not turntable .I would be very surprised if you would hear a significant difference between the 2 if setup correctly and same speakers were used.I have many top of the line vintage tables and they all sound fantastic with proper setup and a quality cartridge.
Found a Peavy amp for $39 for my son-in-law. Didn't seem to work quite right but his band mate cleaned some tubes or something and its fine. US vintage and back in service. Do believe EVH used Peavy equipment. They left the goodwill price sticker on. Thanks.
yes a friend had a bar band he got a peavey amp and a small jazz chorus for dirt cheap a friend of his guitar player repaired both for him sounded fine used in his band gigs as said before my late dad was larry peaveys h.s. p.e teacher in meridian have a photo at a miss state reunion he started a foundation for engineering students friend found at good will was donating other items saw the amps in the a.v. area
nothing beats stereo equipment made in the mid 70's. also something I learned very early on don't cheap out on phono cartridges headphones or speakers. something I did back then as a teenager bought good stuff most was low end. one of the guys I work with relocated to North Carolina the movers broke a bunch of stuff hundreds of dollars.
Good luck on getting your furniture soon Melinda. It would be a good idea to intall a gps tracker with one of your furniture items so you know where the truck is at all times. You can hide the tracker under a dining table or any small table or lamp for example.
That would be very nice right about now. Lol. My husband called them again today and they told him we will be getting our furniture next week. While disappointing, I'll take it. 🤗❤️ Thank you and take care.
I have four Technics Turntables. All Direct Drive, one is a Linear Tracking one, An SL-D2 (Semi Auto), SL-D3 (Fully Auto) and my main rig the mighty SL-1600 MKII (Fully Auto). The 1600 has a plinth that totally resistant to vibrations. Probably why so many radio stations used the 1600 MKII. You can literally pound on the table you have it sitting on and nothing gets through to the stylus. Also it has Tonearm Height Adjustment for perfect VTA and pretty much is bullet proof. I use a High Quality Microline stylus/cartridge on it and it sounds very good. I have zero need for any new turntables because these only need a drop of machine oil in the spindle about once every 10 years and they will run forever nice and quiet with no audible rumble or Wow & Flutter. Hope you get your furniture soon! I would hate to be the guys that finally deliver it. I can imagine both you and your husband lighting them up!
Wow! That would be a great turntable. I may replace my equipment stand sometime in the future because it doesn't seem as solid and sturdy as it should for the turntable. The poor movers that will be bringing in our furniture will be treated well. They are not the ones at fault. Management on the other hand may get the wrath of our anger. Lol. Hopefully, it will be over soon. Thank you and take care. 🤗❤️
I am so sorry about the move issues. I know two people who have moved across the country this year and have faced similar issues. One of them opted to rent a Uhaul and drive all their stuff across several states themselves because they didn't appreciate such a large window for the delivery date (the company could only guarantee a 14-day window for drop off, rather than a set date). The other person just had to wait those two weeks. But three! That's unbelievable.
I agree. It's unacceptable. They never gave us any indication it would take this long. They told us 3 to 7 business days. It is well beyond that. Thank you and take care. 🤗❤️
Variety is cool, Melinda. I recall the manager at Radio Shack (circa 1975) telling teenage me that he had a P-mount arm in his phono & enjoyed swapping cartridges according to his mood. I listen often via headphones at home & bought a Woo "Fireflies" headphone amp (made in Brooklyn!) a few years ago. On rare occasions I go back to listening via my old FatMan iTube headphone amp because I love the 2nd harmonic distortion it adds. Everything sounds "rich" via the FatMan, but I miss the detail & punch of the Woo so I always return to it.
I completely understand. They all have their strengths and it's great to find the one(or two) that brings out the best in the music to our own satisfaction. ❤️🤗 I'm glad you kept them both. Thank you and take care.
That's a good point. I need to set the room up with a rug and treatments first. After everything else is in place, then I can make the adjustments to my equipment. Thank you and take care. 🤗❤️
The PL-516 was my first turntable in 1980. It came with a basic cartridge that i quickly replaced with a Shure M-95 HE. Which was one of the top bang for the buck cartridges back then. THAT sounded nice. So i learned pretty early on what a difference in soundquality the cartridge makes. And no todays cartridges are not better than those from the past. At least not the ones that are in the for common folks affordable price bracket. And i someome say " the technological advancements...." Well,listen,99% of that goes into cost reduction and cheaper production for a maxed out profit margin.
I would love to have the opportunity to hear a high end vintage cartridge. That would be wonderful to experience. I agree that a good cart makes all of the difference. Thank you and take care. 🤗❤️
Melinda, I think you need to contact a lawyer about the movers as soon as possible! There is no need for the move to have taken this long. I hope you haven't already paid them in full.😥
We have not paid them in full and you're right, this is ridiculous. I have a lot of treasured items that I want to have back. Once we actually get our furniture and personal items, then we can go after them for breach of contract. It's such a shame. 😳 Thank you for the advice. Take care.
@@MelindaMurphyjust be careful on u tube Melinda cause I don't want to be a negative nellybut hopefully the movers don't know you have this channel! Better to be safe then sorry!
Ugh...hang in there & I'm really hoping that you can get your new home in order with your furniture being delivered very soon (seems very extreme at this point) I do own a few MofI's would love to hear what a actual UHQR sounds like but those $100+ vinyl just are out of my budget. I don't consider my set up high end, but I thoroughly enjoy it. Fluance RT85 turntable / Sony receiver / Klipsch tower speakers / I now have everything setup in a dedicated room & absolutely love it. Can't wait to see yours when it's complete. Now go find that furniture truck & drive it to your new home yourself....
Lol. Thank you for the kind words. As of this morning, they are telling us our furniture will arrive next week. That means we will have waited for four weeks. Way too long but I will take it. Lol. You have a very nice turntable. I'm with you on the UHQRs. It has to be something extremely special for me to spend the money these days. Take care. ❤️🤗
I’m still using….as I’m sure I’ve told you before. My Marantz 6300 direct drive TT I bought when I was a kid. I paid $265.00 dollars for it in 1977. Maybe, I’ll upgrade sometime in the future. But, it’s fine for now.
I have 2 vintage tables. A Elac Miricord and a Thorens. I have no desire to upgrade them but I have bought multiple tone arms or cartridge heads for diffuser cartridges. I find they make a bigger difference than the table does.
I agree that the tone arms and carts make a huge difference. The video was a comparison between a standard and affordable turntable, tone arm, and cart vs something that I personally consider a huge splurge for myself. I wanted to give an honest answer of whether the more expensive gear was better. In my opinion, it is quite a bit better but that the Pioneer was very enjoyable too. I apologize for the late response. Take care. 🤗❤️
A cheap upgrade on the Pioneer is rewiring the tone arm with premium copper wire and replacing the RCA cable plug in contacts with a premium brand ..After that it takes a short span of use maybe week of steady playing and then you will start to hear quite a bit much more of the detail and it will just get better ..I have a BIC 914 C 1979 turntable that gets the lowest of opinions and jokes about how good they are when they are not being used . In 2008 I did the rewiring and contact jack replacement with a new Shure M 97 cartridge and dialed in the proper tracking force on it and after listening for many hours of getting it broken in the results of the work paid off . After 16 years of average low time use the details still are far more up front and it reveals' the differences of the quality of the mediocre to the very best vinyls. I assume that it could sound as good as a $ 2000 USD new table ..
Wow! When someone like you knows what they are doing, the possibilities are endless. I agree that we could make upgrades to really bring out the best in this Pioneer turntable. Thank you and take care. ❤️🤗
@@MelindaMurphy Hey thank you Melinda ,you are a great listener and you have awesome replies always ...The wires on the older tables possibly many are a quality aluminum ,it was on mine anyways ..Aluminum is good but coper and silver rule .. I think my newer copper wires may be a bit fortified with silver also to give it even more conductivity. ,., If you and your husband want to go the extra effort It is about a day or two of work and make sure you get silver solder and a fine tip soldering iron and check out for the best contacts for the cartridge hook up to the wires.. ...That old cartridge' on the Pioneer will sound like a brand new one ..
I think that once you get rumble and wow/flutter below levels of being heard by the human ear that the next most important thing on the turntable is going to be the cartridge and tonearm. Especially the cartridge. I think Undetectable rumble with a fantastic cartridge are the key components to excellent sounding turntable. I love my 1998 Technics sl 1200 MK5 with Ortofon LVB250 mounted in sumiko headshell and run through project tube box s phono preamp with audioquest interconnects. Paid $450 for the Technics turntable in 2016 and it has been 100% trouble-free with the well over 12,000 hours of use. Keep on spending the black circle!
I have not wrote since the move, sorry to hear of you'r trouble but I guess I am an old person now and I knew a move with all the records may be hard. Please don't think I am crazy, but I could swear a spirit floted by about the first time you held up the Van Halen record. Keep up the post, Thanks.
I sure do miss Eddie. I can't believe he's been gone for nearly 4 years. ❤️ Moving records was hard but the delay of our furniture has been so much worse. What infuriates me is that we paid a lot of money for the convenience of someone else moving us. This is not convenient. This has been extremely frustrating and difficult. As of today, they finally told us that our furniture will be coming next week. It's the first time they have actually given us a day of arrival. Let's hope it actually happens. Thank you and take care. ❤️🤗
Use both a modern Technics 1200 GAE and a reconditioned Denon DP 47 vintage TT from the 80's. The Denon is what I like to call lost tech. Fully Automatic it is a God send when you are tired and want your vinyl fix but are worried about dozing off or working and do not have the ability to baby sit the Stylus. Despite not being considered an Audiophile table it sounds pretty darn good to boot.
I've owned a Denon before and they make great turntables. I sometimes miss the automatic return for the reasons you just named. Lol. Thank you and take care. ❤️🤗
I remember when P mount cartridge"s came out in the 80's for people who can't mount a standard cartridge. Today many turntables have premounted standard cartridges for convenience.
Melinda, your video shocked me today haha! It's like you read my mind on what I've been thinking about and looking at a lot lately. Vintage versus modern day sound and equipment 🙂 I'm not joking when I say that last night I was up until about 2:00 AM researching some vintage equipment and new equipment as well. And after seeing Mike's video the other day on his In Groove channel about the 20K Technics PL 1000 he got, which is nothing close to what I am able to afford, it really stoked that fire in me again to keep researching and looking some more. My current turntable is nothing like your Rega. I'm actually wanting to upgrade to something like that. But at the same time, I'm really wanting to get a vintage Technics SL 1200 or similar turntable too. I've been going back and forth on the quality of the build, the price, which one will sound better, which one will I be able to use easier with my vision, etc. This thought has been on my mind for a long time but it's really been surfacing a lot more in the last month or two. I am on a much tighter budget than I wish so money is a determining factor for sure. It's a lot easier to find a good deal on vintage equipment since a lot of people have had this equipment and often it's just stored away somewhere and probably has been since 1990. But at the same time, a lot of that older equipment put away when CDs became popular needs work and that is hard to find since there aren't many stereo or electronics shops around most areas nowadays. Last night, I got on Facebook and put out a question to friends asking if anybody had any vintage turntables, receivers, or even records that they might want to part with. I don't know why I hadn't thought of that before but I really hadn't. I thought let me just see what somebody might have that I could possibly get a great deal on or if it was even possible. I've been very disheartened looking around in Goodwill types of stores and the likes. But I knew ahead of time that checking out those kind of places wasn't likely to help any. But I still had to look and see if a miracle could happen. I'm perfectly content with what I have For now. And after getting the McIntosh equipment, as well as bringing back a few sets of vintage speakers from the house in Houston (like the Acoustic Research AR-3 and Wharfedale speakers (all of which need work and recapping most likely), I have just been constantly thinking about a turntable upgrade. I still need find a place that can look at the equipment I have too. So there's a lot to do. I do plan on eventually being able to try both vintage equipment and new equipment. I've got a couple of turntables I brought back from Houston and one I bought about a year ago from a friend. I've got two Dual vintage turntables as well as a few I don't even really know about. But vintage doesn't always mean quality and with some of these turntables I think they are going to be lower end vintage or more beginner vintage. I don't even know where some of them came from and I was surprised to find them at the house in Houston? But what I'm looking for is something a little higher end and easier for me to use like that SL 1200 I mentioned. And to me, those aren't cheap either. But it's so much fun looking and trying to compare and learn more about what I want to get at the same time. And I'm patient even though I want to hurry up 🙂 I know I'll find what I want and one day have things set up just like I want to. I love some of these modern turntables with the modern technology and capabilities but I also love the vintage equipment as well. I just don't love the prices most of the time. When I saw the title of your video, I had to think "no way". And after watching it I had to laugh because you were talking about exactly what I've been thinking about. Probably me and about a hundred other people but still... I'm sorry things are going so rough for you and your husband with the movers. This is unbelievable. Why is it they can't just bring your furniture to you? Did they lose it? Are they holding it hostage? That is just crazy. I hope it all gets worked out real soon and you get all of your stuff. BTW, as I was looking around on FB last night, looking at the marketplace and just catching up, I came across something and I sent something to you as well. Hopefully you'll see it when you have time and know what I'm referring to. Keep up with your positive and cheerful attitude. I admire that in people. But then fire away once you gets your belongings and don't hold back on your review either haha! That's just so unbelievable what this moving company has done, or better yet not done, with handling your belongings and the whole situation it sounds like. Aren't you glad you did not ship your records with them!!! That was a very smart decision 👍 Brian in Fort Worth 🎶
Hi Brian. You are in a little bit of a fun dilemma. Lol. It's a difficult but fun decision to be in. I'm not handy at all so I will always go with modern equipment but people that know how to work on stereo equipment can benefit from some really great deals on vintage gear. I need to check out Mike's video showing his turntable. 🥰 Thank you for the kind words. I will be so grateful when our furniture finally arrives. It's frustrating that this company can do this and get away with it. They have all of the power in this situation. I am just hoping to receive all of our belongings in good condition. Thank you and take care. ❤️🤗
@@MelindaMurphy You are so right on all of those points! And with my inability to see well enough to work on my own equipment nowadays, I definitely have to keep that in mind too. It's so expensive getting things done to the vintage equipment but fortunately I have a friend that's pretty good in that type of work.
@@MelindaMurphy oops, I must have accidentally hit send? Anyway, I'll wrap this up. I'm thinking along the lines of maybe a vintage receiver, the McIntosh equipment, and a new turntable 🙂 We will see. I hope your furniture and belongings arrive real soon and hopefully in your next video you'll have everything. Hopefully before then of course 👍
My very first decent turntable was a Pioneer PL-12, which I bought for about $60 brand new in 1976. It was far better than anything I had ever heard before. It sounded great with a $50 Grado cartridge, although I think the Grado was a bit too compliant for the relatively heavy tonearm on the PL-12., which could really cause some problems with warped records. I checked it out and discovered that your PL-516 is also belt drive. Across the board, I believe belt drive turntables, even cheap ones, sound better than direct drive. I am also torn between your two options. Modern equipment certainly reveals more detaill but enjoyment of music is not all about detail. If this were true, digital would always sound better than analog. I think the popularity of vintage equipment today is due to the fact that vintage gear is often more musical and, well, more human.
Interesting comparison. And from a music lover, as opposed to a sheer audiophile who's more about sound primarily. This review is easy to digest. As for things being better now than before, I'd use TVs as a reference. I had a Sony 27" XBR TV, bought in 1992; the tuner went bad in 1996 and the repair guy said, "hang on to this; they don't build them like this anymore." When I got a 50" Pioneer plasma in 2008, the Sony was still going strong. I gave it to a friend and it was still going years later. The rarefied stuff is better overall, probably, but super expensive. I have a 65" Sony OLED TV now, bought in 2020, and it's a bigger screen than the Pioneer it replaced (and cost less, amazingly), but the Pioneer was more solid; it was 82 lbs versus the OLED's 52, and the Pioneer's sound system was better. The OLED seemed flimsy by comparison, whereas the Pioneer was a tank. It depends on what category you're dealing with. If we want quality, we may well have to spend more. Do your research, buy the best you can afford, and be done with it. That's my motto these days.
Hi Melinda, I am sorry to hear about your continued troubles with the moving company. You know, these companies are in business to make money. Being a day, possibly two, late due to weather, or a breakdown on the road, is understandable, but not as long as it has taken. I wonder if the truck with your things was not in a serious accident of some type. Here the company might want to wait about what their insurance company says. It would be irresponsible not to inform the customer however. 🤗😔
I have 3 Technics SL-1200 Mk 2. Great turntables. The club/DJ “standard”. But then again, greater than 90% of my collection is electronic. I have Ortofon Concorde styluses on each of them. One of the 1200s has a serial number from 1979, the others are newer from the late 1990s. I can’t tell the difference between them. I’ve long passed on the “audiophile” debate honestly. Maybe what I write following will set some people off or sound ignorant, but it’s my opinion. For vinyl, I feel that the biggest factor is the stylus and proper setup. Clean power is critical, so spending the money on a good, professional level surge protector is worth it IMHO. Also the gauge of speaker cable that’s appropriate for the speakers and amp you have is important. Lastly, the speakers that sound good to you as the listener is probably the biggest factor. And that’s going to differ drastically based on the type of music you listen to and how you like the sound to be.
I can't imagine anyone getting upset. This sounds very reasonable and true to me. I agree that the stylus does make a huge difference. I have always been able to hear a noticeable difference when I do a stylus upgrade. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Take care. 🤗❤️
Linear tracking is were the tonearm travels straight across like a record lathe, the advantages: tonearm is straight and shorter, about 6" long, no tracking error and no anti skating needed.
I am still finding incredible vintage turntables at very low prices, garage and estate sales, along with a few FB marketplace. Bought an untested Dual this weekend at a garage sale, $5. I wanted the Ortofon cartridge with Ortofon stylus. Got it up and running. Removed the cartridge and put it on my keeper Pioneer, then donated the Dual to Habitat Restore. I picked up a nice PL514 on FB marketplace, paid $40 for it. Only thing it needed was a cartridge so it got the Ortofon. I really like my PL-560, needed a cartridge and replacement feet. Paid $19 for it at a thrift store. Using that one with my McIntosh/JBL system. Put a better cartridge on that PL-516 and give us another review.
Wow! That's amazing and very encouraging. So many people say that getting into records is too expensive. If you are able to find equipment like that, it's affordable. Thank you and take care., ❤️🤗
I'm so glad that you are enjoying the sound quality so much more. ❤️ Improvements like that make a big difference. Thank you and take care.
Very nice. I'm sure your set up is great. ❤️🤗 I hope you are truly enjoying it. Thank you and take care.
I'm not an audiophile either or at least I do not accept that label, but have been called that plenty of times. (I have been into audio for 40+ years). I hear those Fluance tables are quite good actually. I'd be interested in picking one up myself if I could accept belt drives and needed a table).
@ericelliott227 they are nice and you go from entry level to the more expensive. Mine came with a 2m blue ortofone and a acrylic platter. Love it.
@@ericelliott227 Absolutely love my Fluance RT85 !! Great value & build quality
@@jmialtacct Sad, music is so healthy for us.
Beautiful set up. ❤️🔥
I have a Marantz 6300 direct drive TT. With a Shure M44-7 high output stylus and a Marantz integrated Amplifier with JBL speakers 🔊 and I think my HiFi sounds great. The best…no. But, it’s a classic analog HiFi.

Awesome! I bought a Technics SL-3300 turntable back in 1979 and it still works perfectly! I just did the math, it is 45 years old and still enjoying it. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine it would last that long. Enjoy the music.

@ oh for Shure. Lol. Many times.
I am with you
For some reason, I really love the music of the late 70's and early 80's. That is my sweet spot for music. ❤️🤗 Thank you and take care.
I still have the same turntable I bought from Circuit City back in 1992
Technics direct drive I paid $600 for and still works great!!
That's awesome! You have definitely got your money's worth and then some. ❤️🤗 Thank you and take care.
I remember going from an Ortofon Red to Blue and hearing a pretty big difference. The Ortofon brand is great. Take care.
I am sure, you will be find the right area for your music room. Wonderfull minutes to hear you speaking about music and HiFi. Lovely greetings from Cologne/Germany.
I will. This music room is going to be incredible. ❤️ Thank you and take care.
It's fun to campare the sound of a Pioneer turntable and the Rega and enjoy the music.I have a high end VPI turntable their expensive but it does have a great sound.I am glad that you enjoy it Melinda.
VPI turntables are excellent. No doubt you love yours. 🥰 Thank you and take care.
The listening experience is absolutely the best. ❤️ Thank you for the kind words. Take care.
Wow! Amazing memories. It's an incredible album. I'm glad your brother still has his turntable. ❤️ Thank you and take care.
My younger brothers original copy of 1984 went to the trash, was probably in great condition too.
Great to see you back, awesome video and a very cool Def Leppard shirt, Peace.
Thank you so much! ❤️🤗
I totally get what you’re saying about speaker 🔈 positioning. Because in my music room. They’re spots where I get a better sound and more bass. I’m thinking about getting some of those sound panelling things. To make better sound in my room.
It can be a lot of fun to tweak the sound in your room. 🙂♥️🤗 Take care.

I really hope we get our furniture soon.

Take care,
Pat
Switching cartridges would be a fun video and the cartridge does make a huge difference. The point of my video was that you can have a standard set up or you can have a more expensive set up and enjoy the music either way. 🤗❤️
It's great that you have the knowledge to repair the vintage equipment. That's the reason vintage equipment still exists and is still enjoyed. Thank you and take care.

I totally understand. The vintage equipment is gorgeous. I'm so glad music lovers are still using vintage gear. Thank you and take care. ❤️🤗
@@josevicentelazo2769 I believe vintage TTs look really cool too.
I love the look of the vintage equipment. It's very nostalgic. I'm glad you kept your equipment for all of these years. Thank you and take care. ❤️🤗
I bought a rega planer 3 36 years agy in 19 86 and still works as good as the I bought it wouldn't change it for the world
That's awesome! Rega makes great turntables. ❤️🤗 Thank you and take care.
I have both. An expensive turntable in my main system (Technics 1200G), and two vintage 1200s in my other systems. I love them all.
Very nice! ❤️🤗 Thank you very much.
those 1200s awesome audio store had
My Thorens TD166 mk2 works as good now as it did when I bought in 1985. It's a belt-drive machine and fully manual. I do get "upgrade" fever from time to time but haven't yet made a move. The Thorens has outlived two CD players and will most likely outlive a third.
That's awesome! You have had that turntable since I was a freshman in high school. Lol. How's that for making one feel old? 😄 I love that you have kept it for all this time and that it has served you so well. Thank you and take care. 🤗❤️
I still have my Thorens TD145 from 1978 and sounds fantastic!
@@franktrgovich7911 Glad to hear that. Quality lasts. How often do you change belts?
I apologize for not listing my equipment. I will update my info at the top of my description tomorrow. Thank you and take care.
Nice T-shirt! Just saw Steve Miller, Journey, and Def Leppard in concert. Amazing show by all
Wow! Incredible bands. I have seen Journey and they were fantastic. Their lead singer totally won me over. 🤗❤️ Thank you and take care.
@@MelindaMurphy Me too. Arnel is such a great frontman!
It's great to have my P8 up and running again. Now if only I had some furniture. Lol. Thank you and take care. 🤗❤️
My husband loves to stream and I love my vinyl records. We are both happy. ❤️🤗 Thank you and take care.
We were told this morning that our furniture will be delivered next week.
What a great story. ♥️🤗 I glad you love your turntable like that. It's cool to have the same one you grew up with. Thank you and take care. 🤗♥️
Some of us might have to band together and do some head huntin if you don't get your belongings 😤
Glad you guys are getting situated the best you're able and happy to hear the lps and equipment are safe and sound.
Turntable technology has grown a lot over the last 30, 40 years! Cartridges are so much better now!
I will say that I think the new technology is fantastic especially for cartridges. They sure are expensive though. Lol. Thank you and take care. 🤗❤️
@@MelindaMurphy yes, most certainly!😊
@@MelindaMurphy I believe the cartridge and stylus are the most important part of a TT. Because this is where the sound is coming from. Also I love direct drive Record Players because, I like to change the pitch of a record. Sometimes I like to slow a record down or speed it up. Depends on the record. It’s the DJ in me. 😂
I went from a Thorens TD 145 to a totally suped up Thorens TD 125 with a Sorane tonearm. The sound difference is massive. Totally worth the money. Dave at Vinyl Nirvanna builds awesome tables!!
Oh wow! Congratulations! It's great to invest in those amazing upgrades that improve the sound quality so much. 🤗❤️ Thank you and take care.
Very well said. There are excellent vintage and modern turntables and ones that aren't so good. Thank you and take care. 🤗❤️
@@PiotrBarcz it all depends on your stylus. But, good point.

I was wondering if you were still making videos, I guess I missed a couple of them. I have been busy working. Congratulations on your music room!
Take care.
Melinda: So sorry about those movers 😢
Looking so much forward to see that finalized music room 🎉
I can't wait to put it all together. I still need some essentials for the room but I'm getting there. 🤗❤️ Thank you and take care.
Love the old 70’s & 80’s turntables! I found an A/T LP120USB FOR $69 in a pawn shop. Even though my Angel Horn is much newer, the A/T is what I’m using as my daily TT.
Wow! What a great price. Angel Horn turntables are a good value for the money as well. Thank you and take care. 🤗❤️
Another fun video...your husband totally gets you with using 1984 as the test record🙂
As for the movers situation, i would very quietly put feelers out for an attorney...just in case...a back up plan if you will.
Young people have told me that they can't afford to start a vinyl collection because of the expense.
I have a Realistic Optimus turntable from the 90’s. She still works!
That's awesome! ❤️🤗 Thank you and take care.
We're extremely frustrated with this moving company.
@@jbvinyl My post was about the backup turntable, not the cartridges
Found a Peavy amp for $39 for my son-in-law. Didn't seem to work quite right but his band mate cleaned some tubes or something and its fine. US vintage and back in service. Do believe EVH used Peavy equipment. They left the goodwill price sticker on. Thanks.

I really enjoy your videos, Melinda! Did you mention what cartridge the Pioneer turntable is using? Thank you..
Hi, what cartridge does your Pioneer turntable use? Thank you.
I guess I understand why you won't mention the cartridge.
nothing beats stereo equipment made in the mid 70's. also something I learned very early on don't cheap out on phono cartridges headphones or speakers. something I did back then as a teenager bought good stuff most was low end. one of the guys I work with relocated to North Carolina the movers broke a bunch of stuff hundreds of dollars.
I agree. It's smart to buy the best we can afford. 🤗❤️ I apologize for the delayed response. Thank you and take care.
Melinda, IMO do not worry about your subs not sounding right until you take care of adding your furniture, rugs and window treatments to the room.
That's a good point. I need to set the room up with a rug and treatments first. After everything else is in place, then I can make the adjustments to my equipment. Thank you and take care. 🤗❤️
The PL-516 was my first turntable in 1980. It came with a basic cartridge that i quickly replaced with a
Shure M-95 HE. Which was one of the top bang for the buck cartridges back then. THAT sounded nice.
So i learned pretty early on what a difference in soundquality the cartridge makes.
And no todays cartridges are not better than those from the past. At least not the ones that are in the
for common folks affordable price bracket. And i someome say " the technological advancements...."
Well,listen,99% of that goes into cost reduction and cheaper production for a maxed out profit margin.

Take care.
@@MelindaMurphy Best of luck; I realize how much is at stake when a lifetime of personal belongings are being moved.

It sounds like you have a great turntable that's treated you well. 😊♥️
I have five turntables. My favorite is the special edition Pink Floyd DSOTM table from Pro-Ject. It looks really cool and sounds great.
Oh wow! That must be the coolest looking turntable ever!!! I'm going to Google it. 🤗 Thank you and take care.
Wow! I just Googled it. Unbelievably cool. 😎
Im still using Denon DP-47F with Hana Ml cart and Aurorasound prima phono and its fantastic. TT from 80 and still like new .
That's terrific. Denon turntables are great. 🤗❤️ Thank you and take care.
It sounds like you have it figured out. I hope to be where you are soon. ❤️🤗 Thank you and take care.
Moving records was hard but the delay of our furniture has been so much worse.
Very true! ♥️🤗 Thank you and take care.
Melinda, your video shocked me today haha! It's like you read my mind on what I've been thinking about and looking at a lot lately. Vintage versus modern day sound and equipment 🙂
I'm not joking when I say that last night I was up until about 2:00 AM researching some vintage equipment and new equipment as well.
That was a very smart decision 👍
Brian in Fort Worth 🎶
Thank you for the kind words.
I love your motto! It's perfect. Your analogy about the TV was right on too. Thank you so much. Take care. ❤️🤗
Hi Melinda,
I am sorry to hear about your continued troubles with the moving company. 🤗😔
I have a Sony PS X5 with an AT 150, good enough
So vintage it flies beneath the radar.
Very nice! ❤️🔥
Very interesting. Thank you for the explanation. Take care. ♥️🤗
I would love to hear your take on the new injection molded LP craze at Green Vinyl Record Co.
I have seen something about that. I need to learn more. That does sound very interesting. Thank you and take care. 🤗❤️
