I very seldom comment on YT but sometimes I feel like saying something. First I’ve been watching your videos for years and always enjoy your stories. I’m also a big audio music hobbyist and have been since as far as I can remember. I’m amazed and appreciate the extend and effort people put into getting the perfect sound. At one point I found myself going down that path but I had to stop. For me, I left I was losing that connection of simply just enjoying the music and my stereo as I did when I was a teenager. I was getting to technical and I was losing the pure joy of it. So many years ago I decided to just enjoy my music system. That said, of course I want it to sound good and if it sounds good to me then it sounds good to me. I enjoy buying vintage stereo equipment mid 70s silver type and I’m always swapping out my listening gear from my collection. I’ll play records, tapes, CDs and I’ll even stream. I’ll make cassette tapes and play them just like I did as a teen. And that’s really my goal, to preserve that feeling of why I still love this hobby after all these years. And that’s why this hobby is so great… it’s different for everyone and it’s all good, there is no right or wrong because we love the music….. I really don’t get to talk about this hobby with anyone, nobody really cares, so thanks for letting me chime and ramble a little. Keep On Rocking In The Free World 🤘🤓🤘🇺🇸
I'm really sympathetic to what you said in your comment, Bill. I feel much the same way. I enjoyed your comments and just remember that there are people like Melinda and me who care about the music too. Maybe it's in our own way, but we care. 👍👍👍
Oh wow! Thank you so much for leaving a comment. We see things exactly the same way. I never want to lose the love I have for music. I love the great sound but it truly is about the pure enjoyment of music. I'm thrilled to have my own music room filled with the music I love and I now have a room that allows my music to soar. ♥️ Like you, I had no one in my life to talk about music, records or stereo equipment. That's when I discovered RUclips. ♥️ It's been incredible to be able to watch videos of other like minded music lovers. Thanks again for reaching out. It's cool to know someone like you exists. ♥️🤗Take care.
You nailed it Bill, I feel the exact same way and there is something about the enjoyment of rotating your old vintage equipment within your listening environment.. I do it all the time😉
Once you get a taste of music on a better medium, better equipment, better room, it is hard to enjoy it on crappy equipment and rooms. It is a simple fact of life.
For me, that's not just a hobby. It's like food for the soul, it's blood in our veins. The quality of the equipament and acoustic improvements are essencial for a good experience but, as you said, the most important is the feeling, the details you listen and catch in your heart. And this changes from heart to heart.
Hello Melinda Your enthusiasm is wonderful. Caring service seems to be a "thing" with REL. John Hunter called me up and spent 45 minutes on the phone with me and even waited patiently while I took notes on what he explained. I have heard of his time generosity toward other customers and potential customers as well. But sending his rep for the day "takes the cake." -Jeffrey in Philadelphia
That's wonderful and yet I'm not surprised. He's a busy guy but he always makes time for me as well. I guess that's why REL is such a great company. I love my subs. ♥️ Thank you and have a great day. 🤗
Very cool for REL to help you out that way, that’s how you know when a company is truly passionate about what they do, I’am now very interested about doing some experimenting with acoustic treatment!! 😎🤘
Love the enthusiasm on this video. Your passion for the hobby really shines through. I am happy for you to finally have a dedicated music room with treatment! So many music lovers are missing out by not having their equipment set up properly. It was especially gratifying listening to your journey with room treatment. It is so overlooked, but yet extremely important. Congrats Melinda!
Thank you so much for your kind words. These adjustments with my equipment and the acoustic treatments have been very beneficial. It really does make a difference. Thank you for the kind words. Take care. ♥️🤗
Cool video. Your quest for high quality sound looks as if it’s been both an education and a lot of fun. The journey will continue. Continue to share what makes your listening experience better. We all benefit and perhaps some of your tips will provide us with that “Eureka” moment which leads us to improved sound in our own listening rooms.
You are right. There is always something new to learn. It's a long but fun ride. 🤗♥️ A lot of my viewers are very knowledgeable already but I do home to provide a "eureka " moment here and there. Thank you and take care. 🤗♥️
Another great episode! Setting up a room like yours would be great, but mine also doubles as a theater room. But as you said, each of us have different sounds and styles of music that we enjoy and need to setup for our specific style. You hit the nail on the head when you described getting chills while listening to a song. That’s when you know that the music doesn’t just hit your ears, but also hits your heart.
So glad you've kept us up-to-date on your room treatment journey. Once one has a good system it's paramount to treat the room properly. Some say that the room is the most important component. Apart from one's ear/brain system, I agree. RE: records used to evaluate and tweak your system. There's one train of thought that says...if one uses only so-called audiophile go-to records, his/her system will be tweaked to specifically reproduce them well. I'm talking about those non-commercially successful, outlier discs heard in so many showrooms. I have a few of those, yet over the years I have consistently used well-recorded and pressed commercial records to fine-tune my system which has resulted in overall very good to excellent sound from most discs. Some of the top notch audiophile records that are have are good old, garden variety 45rpm off-the-shelf singles. Have fun!!
Agreed. It's important that all records sound as good as they can. I do enjoy those 12" singles. They usually sound fantastic. Thank you for the kind words. Take care. ♥️🤗
YES!!! I've been waiting for the Dylan poster! I knew it! It looks beautiful! And it's so cool that REL got in touch with you and took all that time with you to improve your listening experience. I'll definitely recommend them to friends who want a sub.
Congrats! You were the first person to guess that I was framing this famous Bob Dylan poster. I agree, it was very cool for REL to help me out. Thank you very much. Take care. ♥️🤗
Wonderful to see your enthusiasm Melinda. Yes small tweaks can make a positive difference , I found that too . Keep enjoying the system and the music . Best wishes from Ireland. 😊😊😊
As one with audiophile interests and an audiophile adjacent budget, I found this very enjoyable, in both practicality and presentation. My first step to acoustic set up was to buy a book on the principles and then incorporate that basic knowledge into my room , with my comfort being primary
You said a mouthful Melinda when you said "it gets you closer to the music!" Hey that's what it's all about!! I know how you feel cause I too have spent a lot of time fine tuning my system and it's such a joy when the fruits of my labor helped to produce a more believable soundstage with improved vocals (if present) and/or instruments that sound more real and natural than before...and let's not forget better DETAIL...the icing on the cake!!! Time to get reaquainted with those great jazz recordings in your collection and to hear Eddie smoke on that fabulous one step!!!
Yes, you really need to get the setup right to experience the music in the best way. ♥️ The folks at REL were so nice to help me out. Thank you and take care. 🤗♥️
I bought two RELT5X for my system in my bedroom the day after I saw your video they add a lot of low end to my KLIPSH 600ms.I recently added a wiim ultra .my ADCOM 555~2 amp from 1989 has never failed to deliver 😮😊
Hi Melinda, Yes, I have homemade ones out of memory foam from Walmart that worked. We painted ours with latex paint, put them on the walls where the reflections were. 24" x 48" tall panels X 3" thk. Havent got any diffusers. I am glad you got your room fine tuned. Now, just keep on buying more records and exploring more music. Happy Holidays.
What a cool video! How awesome to have an expert tweaking your setup. Many don't realize you can get significant improvements in sound with minor adjustments without needing to upgrade everything. Improved sound plus not spending money combine two of my favorite things!
Re "non-audiophile records", someone (Steve Guttenberg?) once said that a good stereo is making an average record sound great (as opposed to tickling the last bit out of a test record). Re treatment, I use mainly furniture in my music room (= guest bed room). The queen bed is a bass trap, 6'W x 8'T book shelves full of books behind listening position are my diffusors: Books on/about music, sheet music, photography and layout/design/bookbinding, woodworking, philosophy, dictionaries, local field guides). It was still a bit too echoey, so made my own absorption panels. Frame from discarded shipping pallets, 4" Roxul 80 for stuffing, had 3 of my photos printed on breathable fabric through Etsy. I think they are about 24x48". Rug on floor. In corner an 8" kitty-corner bass-trap with white fabric, on which I pin some band and label buttons. Glad your room is sounding even better now! Enjoy!
That's awesome. You are very creative. A lot of things in our room are natural sound absorbers and the panels help a lot as well. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗
Thank you for sharing your experience with audio equipment and set up. You really deserve this because of the stress of moving. The music room is looking so nice.
Wow Melinda! This is one of your greatest videos! Awesome explanations on the process. I’m happy you got a big improvement! You’re teasing me with that Santana album. Ha ha. This is close to what I told you will happen. Soon, what I said, companies will be sending you gear to try and do reviews on. I gave my dad some acoustic treatment panels and such, my friend was throwing them out for his move to Europe. My Dad is always moving speakers and equipment looking for improvements. Yesterday, I listened to The Doors 45-RPM of “L.A. Woman” with my McIntosh tube amplifier from 1963 with my Sansui AS-100 2-way speakers from 1971. Jim Morrison was in the room! Unbelievable! I’ve never heard that album like that before. How can listening to vinyl keep getting better and better??? OK Melinda, I’ll keep my eye out for that Santana pressing!!! That Rolling Stones 12 inch sounds cool as well!
Wow! Thank you for the amazing compliment regarding this video. ♥️🤗 It's very cool that your dad was able to get his acoustic treatments in that way. The ones I ordered are reasonably priced compared to most but still not cheap. Yes, this MoFi Santana album is insanely good. Make sure that if you do buy it that it's the new one mastered by Krieg Wunderlich. That LA Woman album also sounds incredible. ♥️ Thank you and take care. 🤗
Hi Melinda, I really enjoyed your video.. That was very nice of REL to help you with your setup. I have two of their T9x subs in my listening room and love them. Your video reminded me of my own journey durning this past year to tweak the sound.. I added some GIK room treatments that made a noticeable improvement. I purchased 5 absorber/diffuser panels for the front and side walls of my listening room, they opened up the sound stage a bit and they look great.. After many years of listening to music, what I hear now is more emotionally involving instead of just listening.. I’ve read about that but now I’m actually experiencing it.. Thanks again for another great video..
Exactly right. This allows us to experience the music in a better way. It sounds like you have an amazing listening room. It was a very kind gesture from REL and I am so grateful. Thank you and take care. 🤗♥️
My compliments to you for being open minded and learning the best way to go about it. One has to make every decision based on what the object/placement actually does to/for the sound. Excellent work, and now you also know what certain room features do to the sound because you listened to with and without to compare. Well Played. Cheers.
Good job! I had the same experience with my rig. I discovered acoustic treatments 10 yrs ago, once i got everything dialed to my satisfaction i stopped. My setup has been the same all these years. To me acoustic treatment is a component, it is a major part of a system. Very true that a stereo system is all about synergy between components. Every time i attend Axpona ( since 2015) and listen to all those uber expensive set-ups the more i feel satisfied when i listen to my rig( no where near uber expensive). Lessons that i always learn are all about set ups. I have both diffusers and absorbers and they do deliver excellent results! Enjoy your music!
Now that I have acoustic treatments in place, I agree that they are essential - at least for my music room. I'm with you. There were some great sounding rooms at Axpona but I left feeling satisfied with my own equipment at home. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗
Thats awesome that he came to ur house and set up the speakers for you. Must feel good knowing ur getting the most out of ur stereo since its professionally set up. Now u can just sit back and just enjoy ur records 👍
It's nice to see you can place your SP10's relatively close to the walls. I always read that you have to have them at least 2 feet out from the sides or back. I may get a couple panels to experiment behind my speakers. Great, informational video. Thanks for helping all of us with this hobby.
I haven't measured but they are pretty far from the back walls. I have always been told to keep them away from the walls as well. This set up is working well for this room. ♥️ Thank you and take care. 🤗
Melinda, Thanks for making this video, you never cease to amaze! Your great Experience with the great folks at REL is something that needed to be shared. This is such a Win, Win For all involved . I have known about the special placement of speakers for quite a while since I did a similar adjustment with my Forte II's. Positioning is Key! I always crack up when I See pics of rigs where the speakers are L & R of a stereo rack pointing straight out only 3 feet apart max. LOL! Although I am limited with my present room. I will have a new room soon to customize, so keeping all your tips in mind. Now you really make me want to get motivated to set up my new music room correctly. Enjoy Re- listening to all your treasures! . Keep up the great videos. God Bless!
Thank you very much. I bet you are looking forward to your new room. I know how excited I was about mine. ♥️ Proper positioning makes all the difference. I literally want to play every record in my collection. This has been so much fun. Thanks again and take care. ♥️🤗
You did it correctly. You made the sound in your room sound the way YOU wanted it to sound. The only person you have to satisfy is yourself. That's what it is all about. My listening room is also my entertainment and memorabilia display room. If I had another room which I could set up for just listening I'd concentrate on acoustics. In my entertainment room I have about 15 feet long by 8 feet high shelving for my Albums, CD's and boxed sets. Plus there are 3 jukeboxes, my RCM and Slot machine. On the wall opposite the albums/CD's is wall-mounted shelving for my antique radios, memorabilia and collectables. 6 shelves made from oak full-size stair steps with the lowest at eye level and the highest about a foot from the top of my 8 foot wall. I have a 5.1 home theater set-up and a quadraphonic system. All speakers are above ear level, which is not a good idea, but the only way I could put them to get them above all my floor equipment. Sitting the speakers on the floor or a foot above made them too close to my listening position and the sound was a bit muddy. Putting them in the front ant rear corners of the rectangular room, above ear level, sounds great to me. To each their own, that's what it's all about.
It takes time to find that perfect speaker placement but it does make a huge difference. I have a lot of music items displayed in my room too. I love the acoustic panels but I also enjoy giving the room some personality. It sounds like you have a great room full of treasures. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗
Another wonderful video, Melinda. I’m inspired to reevaluate my speakers position and system components position…thanks again for your videos. I’m a fan!
Congrats--Over a space of maybe 6 years I have done exactly what you hae done. Declutter, speaker positioning, dual subs, rack away from the speakers and treatment. Rather amazing isnt it! Biamping also helped but that was because I had a amp/speaker mismatch---which I dont think you have. PS...your best video yet! I have 10 absorption panels from GIK.
Thank you for the wonderful compliment. ♥️🤗 Doing this made a huge difference. This room had so much echo and my music was very muddy sounding. Now, the music is crisp and clear. I am so happy. Thank you and take care. 🤗♥️
Dear Melinda! At first, I wish you great enjoyment for your listening room! One of the best consequence of treatment that you heve to rediscover your entire collection beceuse every records will sound better. I have a relatively small room. I have 2 big CD shelves and big curtain and carpet so I don't need much panels. But I have membrane bass traps (tuned specially for my room) because my little room have huge dips and peaks in the bass range. They helped me a lot and they even enhanced mids and treble maybe even more than bass. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't heard it with my own ears. I have a calibrated measurement microphone which I ordered from USA. For me that microphone was the best hifi investment I ever made. I optimized panel, bass trap, speaker and even my chair placement with the microphone measurements in order to achieve the most linear and balanced performance. There are disadvantages with my current speakers so in the last months I listened and tried other speakers and I bought another speakers. These will arrive at December.
Congrats on your new speaker purchase. That's so exciting! It was amazing to hear the difference in the sound when we took a panel out of the room and then brought it back in. It was a great learning experience. Every room has its challenges. I'm glad to hear that you have been able to fix yours. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗
Great video. It's great to see how excited you are about your room set up. How lovely of Rel to help you out like that. You're so right about it being about the experience of the music rather than the gear. I like to think I experience the music rather than just listening to it or the gear. Due to downsizing I have my hifi in a less than ideal room so I got a lovely headphone system that my gear is plugged into so the room has been taken out of the equation. Luckily my speakers aren't particularly fussy about placement so they still sound OK but the headphones work better for me.
I'm glad the headphones have helped you. ♥️🤗 It was very cool for the folks at REL to help me out. I still can't believe it. The music is what truly matters. Good gear just brings out the best in the music. ♥️ Thank you and take care.
Great video Melinda, I have been struggling trying to get the perfect sound out of my system, just last week I moved my turntable and amp into a small closet next to my listening room, and wow, it really helped, I like to listen loud and needed to get my turntable away from my speakers to avoid any feedback, now I can listen LOUD it's awesome, I hope you have a great week!
They broke the mould when they made Clay! Thanks Melinda for showing us how it turned out and enjoy playing your favorite records in luxurious surroundings!
Enjoyed your video as always, thanks to your video I dug through my stones collection , and sure enough there was the 12” of miss you , I put it on played it for the first time in years , I does sound just great ! Fun to rediscover your collection , thanks for what you do !
It's a great record to put on and enjoy the wonders of vinyl records. It sounds so terrific in every way. That bass line is killer. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗
wow Melinda, that is such an amazing story.... you are on a roll here, no wonder you seem to be smiling from here to the moon 🤩😎 Yes, great acoustic treatments may be the best value ever, I reckon 😍 That Amused to death album is unreal .... make sure you don´t get amused to death now 🤣
I was smiling most of the way through this video. Not because it was humorous, but it was fun to listen to you talk about your experience and the discovery of it all. Congratulations on the new room; you'll enjoy your music even more now. My room has plenty of diffusers (book, CD and LP cabinets), but I don't have anything else except a rug which covers most of the floor. I do have a room node; when I stand up the bass drops off. I wonder if putting something on the wall behind my head would help that. I have only one placement option because of the way the apartment is constructed, the system is along the long wall firing across the short dimension. The room is 14 x 18.5, with an 11 ft. ceiling. I thought about acoustic panels, even have a couple of small ones bought years ago that I never put up. We'll see. But it's nice to hear you have your room dialed in, and I get a kick out of that!
You will have to give those panels a try. 🤗 I'm glad my video was fun for you. It was a great learning experience for me and my room does sound great now. ♥️ Thank you and take care.
Looks great and I'm sure it sounds fantastic! I've never had panels or diffusers in my room. That is something I've never considered. It would likely improve my sound but I just have both speakers pointing to my chair and it sounds good to me! I'm glad the jukebox is still going! Now you can enjoy some music before the movies begin. Great video and take care!
I'll still be able to enjoy my jukebox. ♥️ No music room is perfect but what matters is that we like the way the music sounds. I'm glad your room is set up in a way that brings you joy. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗
I enjoyed your video Melinda, we live in California and our only son moved to Florida a few years back (😢 so far away now ) well we took over his old bedroom as a dedicated music room in adjacent to our theater room and it’s 10‘ x 10‘ square room and it has been quite the challenge to get it dialed in but an enjoyable one!
It's great to have a music room but I know your son living so far away is tough. Our daughter moved here to Florida for her medical residency and that's why we moved. ♥️ I hope your new room brings a lot of joy to your life. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗
@ I remember you telling that story about your daughter and that’s why you moved, that’s one of the reasons why we shared about our son. My wife and I are both retired now and our son and his girlfriend (the reason for his move for his girlfriend to be closer to her family) is requesting us to move to Florida so he can keep an eye on us old people, but I’m not sure if we can handle the humidity. It would be quite a drastic change from living in the desert in California our whole lives.
It’s nice to hear that you were able to get so much sound quality using the Emotiva gear. I know they are not the only factor but processing an amplification are important components to any system. I am considering the BASX line for a two channel set up once I am able to purchase a new house.
The Emotiva brand is high quality for the price. ♥️ At some point, I may upgrade but for now I am happy and the room does sound great. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗
@@MelindaMurphy Yes, I have several pieces of their gear around my house and have bene quite happy. I am pretty sure their BaxX gear would be great in a two channel setup!
Melinda, did you cry when all this was going on? I would have lost it while the rep from Rel was in my home. Great video. Acoustic panels of some type are definitely in my future
Hi Melinda! Great video as always! 'Amused To Death' is one of my favourite albums. INCREDIBLE recording. I had the original release... on the cover it said "If the dog barking at the start doesn't sound like it's in the neighbour's yard then your speakers are out of phase." About half-way through there's a sound of a dripping tap..... it sounds like it's behind you!! Take care lovely lady.😘
It's certainly amazing. People who buy AVR as Arcam AVR 31, use Dirac Live® room correction, but a live person assistant tuning is on hundred levels better. Enjoy the true quality listening experience!
I thought of getting subwoofers but i didnt bother.Got these 100 watt Bowers and Wilkins speakers and after a few hours of music played they just filled out to a deeper richer sound.I`ve got the whole audio system in a small room so thats another reason for not having the extra speakers. Nice to hear someone has helped you out with your sound system. Its all about the highest quality of accoustics you can get that matters,i`m doing ok with mine though.😉
The only thing that matters is our own personal enjoyment of how our room sounds. It was very kind of the folks at REL to help me out. My room had a lot of issues that have now been solved. Thank you and take care. 🤗♥️
Congratulations, you're living the dream. 😻 I'm very happy for you, Melinda. 👍👍👍 It just looks like you're having a lot of fun with your new music room. That was really nice of REL to help you out. I'm glad that you found a place for the juke box that both you and Phillip can live with. It's such a cool thing to own and enjoy. To be quite honest with you, I've never gone to these lengths to tailor the sound to a room. Then again, I've never had a dedicated music room. Maybe that'll happen in our next house. Even then, I'm not too sure that I'd go to all of these lengths to tailor the sound, but maybe I will. I'm not a fan of two story homes. When we start house hunting, we will be looking for a single level house. I know that it's more expensive, but it's just better for people who are starting to age like us. I look forward to your next video, and I'll see you on the flip side. 👍💖🎸😎
I understand. The stairs can be a big pain. Lol. My room really needed these acoustic panels. There was a lot of echo in the room and music just didn't sound right. It sounds great now and I am really enjoying myself. I want to play every record in my collection! REL has always had a great reputation but I didn't realize how nice the people are. I was so honored to receive their help. Best wishes to you on your future move. Take care. ♥️🤗
@@MelindaMurphy I understand your problem with the echo. If I had that problem, I'd add more sound absorbing decor. Carpets, curtains, and tapestries can dampen the sound. They even have really cool music themed tapestries. They dampen sound, but they decorate at the same time. Anyway, you've got it, so enjoy the music. 👍👍👍Thanks for the well wishes and you take care as well.
Excellent job addressing the room. Don't forget the ceiling! Consider removing the coffee table as well. A lot of sound will bounce off that. Have fun!
You nailed it! It's about the music not the gear or only listening to the best recordings. One that 🎵. I remember buying the wings 45 someone's knocking on my door when I was probably around 7 years old. I used to buy 45 damn I am getting old.😅
My mom used to buy 45's for me because they were more affordable than an entire album. I still look through them for my jukebox. ♥️ It truly is about the music and when the music sounds great, it's just that more enjoyable. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗
I always loved 12" Remixes and they do sound better because they are cut with deep bass grooves - I remember my thrill of hearing the 12" Mix of "Memories" by Pubic Image Ltd in 1979 and hearing Jah Wobble's incredible Bass Guitar just take up the whole room! It was a spiritual experience! But I found all my 12" Remixes sound like that - What a great story with your Room Treatment - Great Video Melinda❤See you Next week!
This Rolling Stones record sounds incredible. The sound is so much better after we made all of these changes but the 12" singles are usually very good. Thank you and have an amazing week. 🤗♥️
pil i have that on double cd reissue yeh those 12 inchers when a friend of mine was a club dj he added klipsch floor cabinets to the system songs by smiths cure blondie etc. he did play a jah wobble my cd single of the sum does rise with the whoosing bass he gave me the 7 or 8 reject singles when he sold his vinlys one is talk talk its my life the bass really boomed on his klipsch cabinets
same mate today bizzare long triangle new order came on the radio another single sounded great in the club i went to r.s.d. first ever last fall dollar bin was 12 inch sex dwarf and third world so got those wobble i have 3 or 4 cds best one is invaders of the heart with all the guest singers sinead visions of you was the single sex dwarf soft cell of course and one by brothers johnson from the 70s
I have two towels under my speakers 🔊. Also away from the wall. But, I’ve been setting up audio equipment since I was 15 years old. I don’t overthink it. Because modern audio equipment is so much different than vintage equipment. I have a mix of modern and vintage.
Very cool video. I love my T5-X subs and use 40 Years of Yello as my setup disc for dialing in the bass. Did you notice the subs getting louder as they break in? Im at 7 clicks, very low. Im glad you are digging Santana too.
As I recall, I do think after having the subs for a little while, we dialed them down. They have been a wonderful addition to my stereo equipment. ♥️ Thank you and take care.
Two suggestions. Get REW and a test microphone. It takes a lot of the error out of trial and error. The ceiling is where you can do the most to improve the room. Bass is the hardest part of room acoustics. You need to do measurements to figure out what the problems are. The ceiling is the best place for membrane bass traps which is what will give you the best results as far as room treatments go. I am surprised that the guy from REL worked on positioning the main speakers first then the subs. Sub placement is far more critical for dodging room mode effects. Optimize the bass as much as you can first using REW (room EQ wizard) then set up your main speakers and adjust the phase and group delay settings to match the subs and the speakers. As for what I did. I completely rebuilt my dedicated room after using REW to measure it. And it was already a very good heavily treated room. I removed the entire ceiling and converted the attic space (not a true attic) into a massive wide band bass trap. It's massive. The absorption material is about 4,000 cubic feet. I used acoustic cloth like that used for speaker grills to create a faux ceiling. The side walls have 4" rockwool built into them from floor to ceiling and the front and back walls have 6" of rockwool built into them from floor to ceiling. The walls all have professional sound *proofing* built into them behind the absorption layer as well as the floor. Sound proofing is different than sound absorption. It isolates the room from outside sound and lowers the room's noise floor. And lastly the floor is heavily carpeted and padded. It's by far the most dead room I have ever experienced. It's important to understand the difference between a truly dead room and an imbalanced dead room. Absorption has to be even throughout the full audible frequency spectrum in a dead room. Otherwise it becomes a passive equalizer and will make the sound seem dull. And when all is said and done I am still using the "Optimal Room Correction" DSP on my BACCH4Mac setup to perfect the speaker/room system. Sorry for such a long post but this is a big subject.
Enjoyable vid, as always. The Roger Waters CD used Q Sound to achieve wider stereo than normal. Some of Madonna's songs on the Immaculate Collection best-of also used Q Sound, Vogue in particular. Sounds like you're over 90% of the way there and only need to enter the world of isolation/mains/tuning devices to see if a final lift can be achieved, but without going down any rabbit holes and always with the option of return and refund. Good luck and enjoy.
A lot of issues have been resolved now which makes me very happy. 🤗♥️ There are still things I can do to improve the sound but for now, I am enjoying this giant step up. Thank you and take care.
I've thought about adding a sub (not two!) to my next set-up (currently I'm confined to headphones,) however I'm trying to avoid it given it won't fit with the room styling unless it's built in. As an architect aesthetics matter to me as much as sound so a pair of floorstanders are what I'll probably end up with (electronics etc will all be in a cabinet.) Acoustically treating the room while maintaining a minimalist aesthetic will be another challenge.
I understand what you mean. I wanted to put more posters up in my room but the sound improvements of the panels are a good trade off. You would love having a sub. ♥️🔥 Thank you and take care.
Greate. Now you can finally her what it is supposed to sound like. Still, I would suggest trying a couple panels on the ceiling too. The thing is that if you get a room very well treated, you will ultimately not feel like you need the subs. It should give very strong, tight bass (depending on how low the speakers go), but in the end, subs always make things better. And you can also add thick curtains to your windows. That helps too, and they are easy to pull aside whenever. :)
I try to spend most of my free time listening, but "tweaking" (not to be confused with "twerking" of course) can be lots of fun as well. Last week I tried the process explained on New Record Day's channel (his LOTS optimization video) to pick the perfect arrangement. My room is too small for that to work well, though. I'm becoming more & more a headphone fan lately, so I had time to listen to a few at my local dealer here in So Cal. I have one small system here at home for LP records & another for CD listening, both with vacuum tube amps with HiFi Man & Grado headphones. So much fun! Cheers! -- Pat
You have some great equipment. Several people have mentioned that they listen through headphones. Eventually, I hope to get a great pair. Thank you and take care. 🤗♥️
I bet band on the run would sound awesome in that room My Favorite MCcarntey song i use carpet like you see in best buy makes a difference nice set up Room Looks good
I normally place my speakers 4 feet or more away from any wall. But I have a huge room with a long brick wall, that acts as a diffusor, that breaks the sound waves into thousands of short waves. The speakers close to the wall makes the sub sound flabby, so the sub is unneeded. Dont use diffusors on walls more than 4 feet away. Place diffusors behind & beside your speakers within 4 feet from your speakers. My speakers set on a fireplace hearth 66 1/2 inches apart. Any door closer than 4 feet from the speakers, leave the doors open. The best diffusors in your room is your records that cover your entire back wall, place your speakers in front of your records. Small diffusors dont do much. My entire back wall is a 22 foot brick wall that acts as a diffusor. Place your subs in a corner 4 inches away from the well, or directly behind your speakers, 4 inches from the wall. Diffusors help room sound by 90%. Hardwood floor helps sound by 10%. Its too complicated to explain, you dont want a 100% REVERBERATION free room! Carpet or clot materials hurt the imaging. I copied you an article that PROVES materials hurt sound. First things first, let’s talk about your room’s surfaces. Hard materials like concrete walls or hardwood floors bounce sound around more, amplifying REVERB. On the flip side, soft furnishings like curtains and carpets absorb sound, reducing REVERB. But it’s not just about what your room is made of; its design matters too. High ceilings and irregular shapes can ENHANCE REVERB, adding depth to the sound. Looking to take your room’s sound to the next level? Discover how to INCREASE REVERB a room and transform its ambiance effortlessly. REVERBERATION, often referred to as reverb, is what gives sound its depth and character by bouncing off surfaces within a space, enriching your listening experience. Whether you’re setting up a HOME STUDIO, outfitting a place of worship, or just want exceptional sound wherever you are, knowing how to INCREASE REVERB is key. Unlike carpets, which absorb high frequencies excessively, wood reflects some of the sound waves, maintaining the room's liveliness and ensuring that recordings sound vibrant and clear. Wooden floors contribute to a controlled reverberation time, ensuring that sounds do not linger too long and become muddy.Jun 13, 2024
I bought them from ATS Acoustics. You can probably get the information about the material from their site. I left a link to their website in the description below my video. Thank you for the kind words. ♥️🤗 Take care.
Ok, on my way there! (Haha - kidding). Actually wanted to ask a question - where would you go online to find a list of people's favorite records? I want to find new artists that I am not aware of. For me I actually prefer CDs so I am not asking for which pressing, but basically artists and albums. Congrats on being so lucky to have Rel visit!
If I wanted to discover new artists, I would probably check out bands and artists on Bandcamp. You could also look up articles about the best albums of recent years. It's great that you are wanting to discover new music. I need to do that more. Thank you and take care. 🤗♥️
Nothing like a Good listening room to enjoy your music inside of . Music to some is a distraction, when it should be an experience . Escape, truly into excapizum . Im jealous in a very good way for you :)
Hi Melinda When you moved your equipment to the side of your room are your speaker cables the same length and what type of cables are they? I may be doing the same thing and am wondering what to do about my speaker cables.
I got me some "pioneer" speakers that I found by the garbage bin when a tenant was moving a couple year's ago!😮 It was drizzling that day, I dried them out in the garage for a couple months ! I still haven't bought speaker wire for them as I can only really use headphones with my set up because of where i live! There hi res headphones that go up to 40k! But I'd love to test these things because I have them next to my system, the previous owners swear they work great! This are. Floor standing speakers with 15 inch woofers with mid range and tweeters! I hope I haven't been offensive with some of my past comments, I have Asperger's and tend to speak my mind a little too much! But I love everyone, and mean no harm!😊😊😊
That’s great! It’s so much fun to experiment with different audio setups. ♥️🤗 It's amazing that you rescued those Pioneers. Nice! Thank you and take care. 🤗♥️
nice find i bought a pair of realistic 4 ways 3 footers solid wood needs new woofers dj friend said if i got the replacements hed install never did like 40 dollars both previous owner friend said same were made by pioneer 80s for radio shack realistic brand still sound good even with woofers taped up
Hi Melinda, great job! I don't have these problems, yet, as I am headphone only. Hopefully someday I can get back to speakers. I miss my Audio Research, Mark Levinson, Wilson Auldio system.
Hi Melinda. Brian from Tokyo here. Always love your videos and this one included. As a photographer, I'm always looking for the quality of light and I wanted to offer you some feedback on yours for this video. I can see that the light you used is set off to the side of you and at a lower angle than your face. If I pause on a frame, I can see the reflection of the light in your eyes and it's right below your pupil. I can also see a little shadow ABOVE your nose, which means the light is coming from below (I know this is weird to point out but these are things photographers notice.) Our brains and eyes are conditioned to see light coming from above (like from the sun) and to see "catch lights" in eyes from above, and light casting shadows under our nose. When light comes from below, it sends a message to our brain that there’s danger (think putting a flashlight under your chin at a campfire.) Just as s friendly piece of advice that will always accentuate your natural beauty, I recommend you always put your light source above your face and off to the side. Well above it ok too. I'm sure you'll find it flattering your more and you wont see so many shadows on your face which will make you look younger ;-) Hope that helps! Hello from Tokyo!
Thank you very much for the kind advice. I am trying to get the lighting right in my new room. I agree that the lighting needs some work and will take your suggestions. When I did try the lighting higher up, I wasn't loving the results but I will figure it out. Lol. It's great to get professional advice and I appreciate it. Thank you and take care. 🤗♥️
Hey Melinda. A very Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. My 62nd Happy Birthday is this coming Sunday (November 17). A big congratulations to you on actually having your own music room. What is that you have behind you with the "His Master's Voice"?♥️😀
Hi! I hope you had a wonderful birthday. I have a Nipper dog salt and pepper shaker set and a statue of Nipper that I found at an antique store. ♥️ Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving. 🤗
I don't think I guessed which poster you were going to put up. Glaser's Dylan is excellent! A suggestion: Swift / Iver duet would sound pretty good. Thanks!
12" singles frequently sound amazing. I have several and they are way ahead of the album versions. I assume its because of the wider grooves putting one track on a 12" format but I'm not an expert
I agree. This "Miss You" 12" represents why I love vinyl and why putting acoustic treatments in my room was such a great decision. I'm having so much fun. I need more 12" singles. Lol. Thank you and take care.
Great Melinda! In the end did you agree with Clay's suggestions? How did you like sound of the room with the sub's and without them? Did Clay suggest away to achieve enough bass without the sub's. Just curious as I have never used sub's. Great video!
Yes, Clay adjusted the speakers until I was very satisfied with the sound. The room was sounding good but the subs add a magic to the listening experience. I hear more details and the lower end sounds so much better with them. I'm spoiled to having subs now. Lol. Thank you and take care. 🤗♥️
Like you, I had no one in my life to talk about music, records or stereo equipment. That's when I discovered RUclips. ♥️ It's been incredible to be able to watch videos of other like minded music lovers. Thanks again for reaching out. It's cool to know someone like you exists. ♥️🤗Take care.
Definitely a great hobby to keep your decent time at home...although it will surely to break ur wallet😅
Beautifully said. I totally agree. Thank you very much. Take care. ♥️🤗
Absolutely correct.
Love your excitement in experiencing a treated room. It's the first thing anyone should do when building a system.
I agree. This has been a tremendous help. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗
Hello Melinda
Your enthusiasm is wonderful. Caring service seems to be a "thing" with REL. John Hunter called me up and spent 45 minutes on the phone with me and even waited patiently while I took notes on what he explained. I have heard of his time generosity toward other customers and potential customers as well. But sending his rep for the day "takes the cake."
-Jeffrey in Philadelphia
Take care. ♥️🤗
Plants behind the speakers can be very effective sound diffusers/absorbers and look nice too !😊
@@SAGNI0971 I think that's a great idea. I hope to do that someday. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗
Melinda, love your passion for the music and the sound quality. Great video!
Thank you so much. I appreciate your kind words. Take care. ♥️🤗
Beautifully said. I agree. There's nothing better. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗
Take care. ♥️🤗
Been quite the journey since your Husband bought you the turntable a few years ago. Congrats !!! You've done well.
It definitely has. He had no idea what he was starting. Lol. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗
If I could go back! LOL - just kidding - been fun.
Proper set-up and treatment are so important. Congratulations.
Definitely. My room sounds terrific now. Thank you and take.
These changes really transformed my room. ♥️ Thank you and take care.
As one with audiophile interests and an audiophile adjacent budget, I found this very enjoyable, in both practicality and presentation. My first step to acoustic set up was to buy a book on the principles and then incorporate that basic knowledge into my room , with my comfort being primary
Thank you very much. I appreciate your kind words. 🤗♥️ Take care.
Thank you! I agree. I want to play every record in my collection. Lol. Thank you and have a wonderful day. 🤗♥️
That’s cool you had a gentleman from REL set up your system. As they say. Set up is everything! Congratulations on the room treatments!
I'm so glad you are enjoying them. I bet they sound amazing. ♥️ Thank you and take care.
@@lydiapawlak8564 yes, it's time to focus on the magic again. Thank you and happy holidays! ♥️🤗
What a cool video! How awesome to have an expert tweaking your setup. Many don't realize you can get significant improvements in sound with minor adjustments without needing to upgrade everything. Improved sound plus not spending money combine two of my favorite things!
It is amazing what a few simple adjustments can do. It was definitely a great learning experience ♥️🤗 Thank you and take care.
That's GREAT, Melinda! I'm so happy for you😀👍!
Thank you very much. 🤗♥️
Thank you very much. The move was definitely brought but this music room makes it all worth it. ♥️🤗 Thank you and take care.
how fun, what a cool company for offering that service to you
I agree. It was totally unexpected but very much appreciated. Thank you and take care. 🤗♥️
Cheers.
Thank you very much. I appreciate your kind words. Take care. ♥️🤗
It was such a kind gesture. ♥️ I have been enjoying it souch. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗
So thrilled for you that you are so happy with your stereo sound!! Happy holidays to you and your family.
Thank you very much. Happy Holidays to you as well.🤗♥️ Take care.
I like that lamp. Groovy.
Thank you. 🤗♥️
This is so interesting. Thank you so much for all the information. Congrats to Rel, lovely thing to do. Liked and subscribed 🤗
REL was very kind to lend a hand. Thank you so much for the sub. Take care. 🤗♥️
Fantastic - so glad the new room is working out for you.
Yes, thank you! 🤗♥️
SO very happy for you!
Thank you very much. ♥️🤗
Another wonderful video, Melinda. I’m inspired to reevaluate my speakers position and system components position…thanks again for your videos. I’m a fan!
It's amazing what one little move to the right or left can do to the sound quality. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗
Wow..thats a great move..putting panel s and bass traps really work for improvement in room acoustic..u done well and that Rel is a kick ass sub❤
I agree. I love my REL subs. ♥️ Thank you and take care.
I like listening to my music loud as well. Lol. I'm glad you made such a positive change. Thank you and take care. 🤗♥️
They broke the mould when they made Clay!
Thanks Melinda for showing us how it turned out and enjoy playing your favorite records in luxurious surroundings!
I agree. Clay is awesome. He did a great job. Thank you and take care. 🤗♥️
wow Melinda, that is such an amazing story.... you are on a roll here, no wonder you seem to be smiling from here to the moon 🤩😎
Yes, great acoustic treatments may be the best value ever, I reckon 😍
That Amused to death album is unreal .... make sure you don´t get amused to death now 🤣
Lol. Good one! I do feel like things are starting to come around now. I am loving my music room. Thank you and take care. 🤗♥️
Hello Melinda. Congratulations on your new listening room
Thank you very much. ♥️🤗
Been following you on your acoustic journey since suggesting moving the spks forward from the couch.
Congrats🎉
I'm glad you've been enjoying the journey! 😄♥️ Thank for the help. 🤗
Another great video my friend
Thank you! 🤗♥️
@
I remember you telling that story about your daughter and that’s why you moved, that’s one of the reasons why we shared about our son.
Very cool to see you Melinda, many thanks as always ✌️🤘
I hope you're having a great day. Thank you. 😃♥️
@MelindaMurphy hanging in there, thank you✌️🤘
Melinda, did you cry when all this was going on? I would have lost it while the rep from Rel was in my home. Great video. Acoustic panels of some type are definitely in my future
It was definitely a very cool experience. I didn't cry but I couldn't stop smiling. I'm so grateful. Thank you and have a fantastic weekend. ♥️🤗
Hey Melinda. Great video and way to update your room. Cheers
Thank you! I'm loving the sound in my room now. 🤗♥️ Take care.
Hi Melinda! Great video as always!
'Amused To Death' is one of my favourite albums. INCREDIBLE recording. I had the original release... on the cover it said "If the dog barking at the start doesn't sound like it's in the neighbour's yard then your speakers are out of phase."
About half-way through there's a sound of a dripping tap..... it sounds like it's behind you!!
Take care lovely lady.😘
I need to get that album. Thank you for the kind words. Take care.
And I hope you are having a great day. 🤗♥️
@@MelindaMurphy Just ordered new speakers so feeling good!😜
@@MelindaMurphy Sadly it seems vinyl copies go for $400+!!! 😯😖
It's certainly amazing. People who buy AVR as Arcam AVR 31, use Dirac Live® room correction, but a live person assistant tuning is on hundred levels better. Enjoy the true quality listening experience!
I'm extremely grateful for their help. Thank you and take care. 🤗♥️
@audiophileman7047 thanks again! ♥️
Everyone should try a sub at least once. Room looks great!
Agreed. I love my subs. ♥️ Thank you very much. Take care.
Excellent job addressing the room. Don't forget the ceiling! Consider removing the coffee table as well. A lot of sound will bounce off that. Have fun!
Thank you for the suggestions. ♥️🤗 Take care.
Thanks for the video, Melinda
Thank you! 🤗♥️ Have a wonderful day.

My ears have definitely changed over the years. I need some panels. I’m sure it makes music sound better.
They are working in my room. 🔥♥️
I have two towels under my speakers 🔊. Also away from the wall. But, I’ve been setting up audio equipment since I was 15 years old. I don’t overthink it. Because modern audio equipment is so much different than vintage equipment. I have a mix of modern and vintage.
I love vintage and modern equipment. ♥️
I bet your room is awesome! ♥️🤗 Thank you for sharing your suggestions. Take care.
As an architect aesthetics matter to me as much as sound so a pair of floorstanders are what I'll probably end up with (electronics etc will all be in a cabinet.)
Acoustically treating the room while maintaining a minimalist aesthetic will be another challenge.
I understand what you mean. I wanted to put more posters up in my room but the sound improvements of the panels are a good trade off. You would love having a sub. ♥️🔥 Thank you and take care.
what a cool room ! from another Clay :)
Thank you Clay!!!! 😄
Rel only make Subs and I have heard few come close to them. Kudos and enjoy!
I'm very happy with them. They sound incredible. Thanks!🤗♥️ Take care.
my technics system is 42 years old and it's still going strong
That's wonderful. You made a very good decision all of those years ago. You got your money's worth. ♥️🤗 Thank you and take care.
Thank you for the suggestions. 🤗♥️I do love my subs and wouldn't be able to give them up. Lol. Take care.
Thanks for sharing. Interesting things happening.
Definitely interesting. ♥️🤗 Thank you very much. Take care.
@ thank you for continuing to share your journey.
Congrats!
Thank you! ♥️🤗

@@MelindaMurphy You Welcome
Dear Ms M: Your videos make honest men gurgle with joy. What is the material for the acoustic panels? And where did you buy them from?

Sounds like the guys who ring my doorbell wanting to sell me solar panels 🙂 Seriously good stuff!!
Thank you Mazzy. My room finally sounds fantastic. Take care. ♥️🤗
Hi Melinda
When you moved your equipment to the side of your room are your speaker cables the same length and what type of cables are they?
Thank you and I hope you can get back to speakers soon - but no doubt you are enjoying your headphones. 🤗♥️ Take care.
Awesome video Melinda! Curious as to what cables you had to change to move your equipment to the side of the room?
The only thing we had to change was to get longer speaker cables
Have a question. Have you considered upgrading to the Sourcepoint 888 speakers? Curious about your thoughts on that.
I'm sure you'll find it flattering your more and you wont see so many shadows on your face which will make you look younger ;-)
Hope that helps!
I think there are “cornertraps” specifically made for corners like that space between the record shelf and the Sourcepoint 8..
You're probably right. My husband did a great job improvising with the ones we have so it worked out very well in the end. Thank you!
Ooooo, nice! When's the house-warming/listening party? 😁
That would be so much fun!!!
😄
I don't think I guessed which poster you were going to put up. Glaser's Dylan is excellent! A suggestion: Swift / Iver duet would sound pretty good. Thanks!
I love the poster. ♥️ Thank you for the suggestion. I haven't heard that duet. Take care. ♥️🤗
12" singles frequently sound amazing. I have several and they are way ahead of the album versions. I assume its because of the wider grooves putting one track on a 12" format but I'm not an expert
Yes! The wider grooves certainly help a lot and when they play at 45 rpm they're even better. That's exactly why I became a huge fan of them.
