Any thoughts on Ryan Mullen's dreadful move at the end of stage-2 of the UAE tour, when he finished his pull on the Bora lead out and then after looking over his shoulder, he deliberately cut across the entire road to disrupt the DSM train? That really should have been a relegation, as it was so blatant. Which of the three rider categories does he fall into?
I know little about cycling except you are all mad, very fit & psychologically hugely challenged which shows me inner strength. I'm in awe of every race. You are one of my personal favourites, I always cheer & will you on. Have a great, successful season. Respect.
I love these chats, Alex. My son raced for a junior club in France, and we're big cycling fans. But this inside info really makes the sport even better. Good luck for 2022!
Thanks for providing explanations why there isn't a mass pile-up every time the bunch is galloping to the line. I used to race cat 2 and never had the guts to put everything on the line to cross it first. Mass sprints are incredible spectacles.
What a coincidence, the same 3 rider types are present in my Saturday morning group rides. Fortunately, there is nothing real on the line at the sign post except for bragging rights, so the respected (the strongest riders) and the feared (the aholes) usually win. The friendly riders usually get dropped and go home in 1 piece to their families.
An interesting insight into what goes on, after seeing the inside the peleton footage can see how it could all go wrong very quickly.. Rider etiquette and unwritten rules that everyone respects if it wasn't for that it'd be more chaotic.
As a lowly Cat 3 rider but still mixing it in sprints, the two things that do my nut are...1. People going too early, running out of gas and then falling back into a fast approach group, where the speed differential can be upwards of 20kph. Brakes then get pulled, which makes the situation even worse. And 2. times when a team does turn up with a lead out guy, who does his job just fine but then doesn't get out the way of all other sprinters and again causes riders behind to have to grab a handful of brake lever or deviate wildly to avoid crashing. Happens way too often in the lower leagues. And I don't get paid to win, so also not willing to take a face full of tarmac on a Saturday morning, riding around an airfield!
George Bennett talked about people chopping his wheel as when he had the NZ champs helmet people thought he was a Qubeca rider and not a then lotto rider. So the next day he stick the black and yellow on and people just allowed him in
Every rule (line) is meant to be broken. I don't think that would work, mainly because lines are already in place, and those who cross them seem to come up with a reason for doing so.
The subtlety of it all is fun and easily missed. The clip at 10:38 (ruclips.net/video/i5WaihVj18M/видео.html) of the Segafredo rider "barging" through is a great example. To my eye, the Lotto rider had let a gap open and the Segafredo rider had a team mate in front of that gap so he accelerated to move into a better position. The Lotto rider sensed the move and stood up to sprint a bit and close the gap. At first watch it looks like the Segafredo rider was in the wrong but to me it was the Lotto rider who messed up. I'd like to know what everyone else thinks of that move.
Hey Alex, love your content, thanks for this. Totally off topic, but do you rate SPD or Speedplay pedals for time-trialing? Or if you can’t give an impartial answer cos of sponsorship etc, that’s cool. Cheers
Please Alex - use a mic, something portable, clipped on your t-shirt, anything close your head. Your videos will be greatly enhanced re sound quality. I’m quite certain you’ll find plenty available out there, super light and discrete ones, but that’s not the most important point, sound capture is paramount. Thanks ! Love the channel.
could have delved into a bit more specifics, ie 'line deviation' vs 'closing the door' or lead-out riders pulling out and then trying to disrupt opponents lead-outs.
If the UCI and race organisers are serious about safety in sprints and the "greyness" of line deviations, simply make a rule that require all designated sprint stages/finishes to have a dead straight finishing straight for the last 500m (or other appropriate distance). Ban sprint finishes on bends or immediately after corners/roundabouts etc, and ban finishing straights that have bottlenecks. Let lead-outs lead out. Let sprinters sprint.

THIS IS type of videos I love to watch on your channel. Many thanks ‼️
These are the kinds of gold videos that we love from your channel. Literally nobody else is doing this.

Loved this insight and great to learn a bit more about the chaos!

Fascinating insight into rider's eye view of sprint madness. Thanks!
Great explanation of a very fluid Wild West part of racing. Thanks for putting in the effort to shine a bit of light.
Would love a series on these kinds of insights, super interesting stuff and what I subbed for.
Excellent clarification Alex, making these in-peloton shots more understandable. I must say it does look incredibly hectic at times

Fascinating stuff, really informative about what goes on in the pro peloton.

great insight....thanks for the effort to share.
Such an interesting video. Thanks Alex!
Super interesting to get your inside view, Alex. Thanks a lot :-)
Really wanted to know some names of “feared” riders!
Thanks for the insight mate! 🙌
Capt Obvious here, Don't have S curves in the last 500m of a sprint. UCI fine the promoter if they do anyway.
I know it's a push but I'd like to push that back to 1km. Allow people to race
Thanks for that Alex.
Great video. Really enjoyed this one 🤟🤟🤟
George Bennett talked about people chopping his wheel as when he had the NZ champs helmet people thought he was a Qubeca rider and not a then lotto rider. So the next day he stick the black and yellow on and people just allowed him in
thanks, I thought of lines prior to the finish just as you proposed them. I would be great to prove lane change/deviations in the post-race video.

Super interesting. Thank you 👍👏
Great content! Keep going, we love it :)
fantastic insight....ye'all earn yizzer wages for my entertainment...respect..
Superb video Alex
awesome insight. thank you.
Super interesting! Thanks!!
Great T-shirt! What is it? What's the pattern? Fantastic insight into the last few kilometers. Looks incredibly terrifying.
So interresting, thank you :)
Thoughts on Ryan Mullen 'accidentally' yeeting himself through the side of the pack because he was tired?
Yes what do the pros think of this?!?

You will make a great DS when you decide to retire. Awesome insights.

Brilliant video, hair by Chanel ?
Great content, nice to get such great insight. We really need a 'Secret cyclist' twitter account outing all the lunatics. ;)
Would think racing line dominates road line- hence the compression of peloton?
What’s the widest road sprint finish you’ve ever been in and how was it comparatively?
Please Alex - use a mic, something portable, clipped on your t-shirt, anything close your head. Your videos will be greatly enhanced re sound quality.

When will the THIGHS CLUB shop reopen?
Now i wanna know who the feared guys are

This shouldn’t be written down on a whiteboard in my opinion. The rules should remain unwritten.
Really good to watch. But can you drop the background music please? I'd rather just listen to you
Painting lines on the road. That'll work well... until it rains. :D
I haven't seen many road markings disappear when it rains. And I'm in Britain, where it rains a lot!
@@stevemawer848 I am talking about them getting very very slippery. ;)
What was it? Friendly, Unpredictable, Psycho? Surely you comment Alex on whom in the peloton fits these categories?? HAHA
Good manners helpful when the rider next to you might be your team mate in the future
ruclips.net/video/i5WaihVj18M/видео.html
8:23 Is that you not letting Groenewegen cut your lead out train?
yus.
Some of the pushing and shoving looks so dangerous. I could never race. Just not worth it
I think the onboard footage makes it look a lot worse than it really is. If you're there, you have a bigger picture than what the camera shows.
We all worked out from watching the UAE that Ryan Mullen takes it too far
I really wanna know who the maniacs are 😂😂
I'd guess at anyone with a cyclocross background
Same here - who are the Feared riders, Alex spill the beans.
Griepel
Almost every sprinter and/or leadout man that isn't named Sam Bennett
@@BalmilySchlockier Tom Pidcock doesn't strike me as a maniac! But I guess I'd change my mind if he did strike me ...
Not fanning out on the road and blocking people trying to join the break?
That's not really relevant for the "Inside the bunch sprint" that Alex is talking about. Maybe there'll be another video about that side of things.
*professional riders are so weird, like more of you are just odd and disconnected than i thought*
What happened the day Gazprom won? What a scandal to let a russian team win the day after the invasion. Seemed almost suspicious.
Can you pls better microphone.. could barely understand your speech... Sorry im using phone to watch ur vids. Ty
Are two comments about this neccesary? My tips are find somewhere with lower background noise and also turn on captions.
