This is insane, you never realise how hectic and physical these sprints are. There is so much pushing and shoving, close calls and shouting I am surprised crashes don't occur more often! Incredible, this has to create a revolution in watching cycling.
As a cycling fan, I've got to say: being able to experience a pro sprint like this is an amazing treat. &, well, this may just be RUclips's Greatest Video...Ever.
in my early days of racing (mid-late 80s) the older guys always told us to ride on the white line (even when out on a solo training ride). that teaches you how to ride straight and totally relaxed so that when you're in a race and you're getting pushed to the edge it's no big deal. you won't freak out and crash when someone bumps you. that, and learning to handle your bike with your hips/body english rather than the bars, really come in handy in situations like this.
Dali S duh, the more you race in these situations the better you get, but my point was that there are basic skills that a beginning racer should work on before they ever consider jumping into a chaotic racing pack at the amateur level. i see lack of these basic skills all the time even in local club rides. amateur races tend to be baptisms by fire because most guys don't work on their basic skills when they ride on their own. they freak out when they get pushed to the outside or get bumped and the result is usually a crash. the white line technique i prescribe teaches a rider how to hold a position smoothly and it's a crucial skill for pack riding and racing.
when i was still using 20c tires on the front, i ride on white lines to lessen vibration until it became a habit... never expected i become "skilled" enough to ride side by side with others with barely less than 6in gap between handle bars.
Seeing it from this view it's amazing how easily these guys can maneuver around each other while not causing crashes every other second. Total pros they are.
Great job! You never really get a sense of how chaotic it is in the final kilometers of a sprint finish. Leadout men fighting to get to the front. Sprinters looking for a line. Teams trying to lineup. You feather your brake and you lose 20 places in line, and piss off other riders. I now understand what professional cyclists coming back from a lay-off mean when they say that they are still getting use to riding in a peloton. It is terrifying!
@impropianist see above. I race at a low level.. I'm talking about myself, and not this race, snd relaying my fears from experience, to this venue. IM demonstrating relatability based upon shared events, not saying this even is at the same level as my experiences... Do you comprendy?
The reason Degenkolb pushes the IAM rider, really it was a quick touch "hey I'm here", is because he's following his lead out train. Everyone respects that in the peleton. If he wasn't on his lead out train than it still would be fine most likely because they're a hell of lot closer to each other than it appears on these cameras that use fish eye lenses. So they're all just trying to hold the wheel in front of them or move up and at these speeds, hot damn! Go look up Robbie McEwen, you'll see some crazy aggressive sprinting.
What i seight, never knew that the intensity of rivalry within the race could be so compelling. Looking forward to such coverage from the pelaton in future competition.
From the flamme rouge to the finishing line takes more or less exactly one minute. One kilometer in one minute... they were riding at 60 km/h. Incredible.
Love this video...stresses the hell out of me watching it...so intense! If you're focus waivers for even a second, there's going to be one crazy accident! The mental strength in this sport seems to be as important (if not more important) as your physical strength. Awesome!
The perspective normally makes it appear worst than it actually is, this however, does not appear to be one of those "normal" situations. What we also don't hear too much of and what I can assure you, will send shivers down in your spine, is that insanely high pitched braking noise and the sound of carbon hitting the tarmac at 50+. Speaking from experience, not that level exactly, but as a serious enough amateur, its terrifying, I would often find myself well toward the back of a race that ended with mass sprint "carnage". Hats off to them, this is why I was never meant to be a pro, thankfully I am grateful.
Damn that was so awesome! :o I wonder at what speed they were going. I'd be so scared to make an accident as you can't really slow down or move much when there's someone at only 1 feet from you in every direction.
DrMorocho Don't get your hopes down because these sprints are a collaborative effort. They can't hit 40mph without some kind of help from rivals/ teammates. It also helps that they get to hang onto the wheels of world class cyclists to pull them up to speed.
+EatSleepTrain Smart It's beautiful though, the Intensity and power that goes behind all of this, the peloton pushing the best of the best at their limits, I love cycling, such an amazing sport
The thing is, they can't sit in that group even if they tried. They'd be dropped as the strategy is to keep speed high. Once speed is high, you drop all the weaker riders, and only the fastest ones can even keep up in the last 1000M. Leaving only the top guys to sprint each other.
This is insane, you never realise how hectic and physical these sprints are. There is so much pushing and shoving, close calls and shouting I am surprised crashes don't occur more often! Incredible, this has to create a revolution in watching cycling.
Well said!!!
Here they crashes in the front of the field. Search on YT for 'Tour de Suisse 2014 Stage 5 sprint crash'

So heavy!!! Keep bringing this type of raw footage!

Ride rollers. Sprint on rollers. You learn how to ride in a straight line while pushing in a hurry.
Started road and mtb cycling two years ago. Thanks for the advice!

These guys be powering their way at full speed as dividers split them, pretty damn scary. These guys are absolute chads, warriors on the road...
Seeing it from this view it's amazing how easily these guys can maneuver around each other while not causing crashes every other second. Total pros they are.
This is fantastic footage. This shows just how talented and gutsy pro riders really are!
I cannot believe how fast they are going; just look at how quickly they pass the traffic islands in the middle of the road. Hardcore stuff.
davidoffon Imagine a 160 pound man slamming into you at speed. That could cause damage similar to a sledgehammer.
Is this was birds do when they flock together? Just go full sprint and shout at each other?
More of this type of footage please!

This had me on the edge of my seat ... breath-taking footage.
Wow, what a perspective!! How intense. I mean, I race at a low level, but the intensity level here is crazy.
This isn't low level though.
@impropianist see above. I race at a low level.. I'm talking about myself, and not this race, snd relaying my fears from experience, to this venue. IM demonstrating relatability based upon shared events, not saying this even is at the same level as my experiences... Do you comprendy?
That was intense. Covering bike races from this point of view would certainly increase their popularity.

Dimitri Lemus Let's not forget Abdu & Ferrari, those guys were freakin mental
These blokes have massive balls
Loving this type of footage. Never realised that they do as much pushing during races. Keep this type of footage coming!
How does this only have 160k views? I feel like I've watched it that many times alone!
damn that's fucking intense
The speed, the teamwork, just amazing
Amazing skills! These new cameras are awesome!
OMG, and they do the same every year, at every race, every day INCREDIBLE !!
This is a sick perspective! wow!
Amazing pictures ! Amazing racers !
Wonderful cycle sceneries and also its place. Amazing job.
What i seight, never knew that the intensity of rivalry within the race could be so compelling. Looking forward to such coverage from the pelaton in future competition.
Now I know why I stick to time trials.
Now I know why I stay on my trainer
Now i know why.. wait, i still dont know.
what in the world did i just watch? it was that dangerous and physical? daaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn
If anyone rode like that at an amateur race they'd be cussed and screamed at for riding like an asshole.
From the flamme rouge to the finishing line takes more or less exactly one minute. One kilometer in one minute... they were riding at 60 km/h. Incredible.
outstanding. I hope they take this "inside the peloton" bike cameras on the Tour
Boy, you really have to like the taste of elbows and pavement to get in the middle of this.
+davidoffon were you drunk writing this?
Love love love these videos from the, riders perspective
Simply terrifying. They were doing 60-65Km before they entered the town centre,

1:05 we komen godverdomme te laat! Haha.
Technology, Cameras and power meter, will change Professional Cycling so much in the next 10 years
Nope
WOW this is awesome footage!
I had no idea d-bags like that guy who passed others by pulling on their hips were tolerated in the peleton. Learning experience for me, thank you OP.
So, Trek has cameras too. From 2:18 it switches to Van Poppel. That crash was partly down to the barriers narrowing the road.
looks like is on Danny van Poppel bike
that's intense! great bit of footage . . .
I didn't know there was so much jostling and yelling during the races, hope we see more thrilling footage like this in the near future.
That's fucking scary, shoving each other for inches of space going at 50-60. Km/h
that propel is a monsterr, that's the frame im saving up for

so sick, love these, more please
Bike racing is crazy!
Awesome Footage - Can only imagine how mad it is to be in that situation.
I used to think that professional jump jockeys were the bravest and most fearless athletes out there. This video has seriously changed my opinion!
These guys are amazing! No crashes!
Still sweating and with white knuckles! Thanks for this great insight.
That's one scary lead out, the course was super tight too.
OMFG...that juz send chills down my spine...jeezm..
now that's what I'm talking about keep it moving and don't be scared. Somedody touch you, so what keep your balance and ride on like a G.
You need to use this during Tour de France guys !
that was terrifying! Brilliant but mad.
This is so awesome. Can't wait for the Tour. Wonder how much this cam weighs?
Hardly anything, I'd expect. A cellphone has all the capabilities needed and much more, and that can be done for about 100 grams (3.5 ounces).
finnaly an accurate view of inside the pelaton!
De-interlacing fail. This awesome footage is worth reprocessing & reuploading.
Intense. This kind of aggression in the pack is not obvious in the voice over helicopter footage.
I had no idea it was that violent and chaotic.
Really impressive bike handling--- they do that for hours on end??
Crazy, but very revealing video.
Its about time I get out and do this........
more insightful videos like these!!!
Amazing!
this was so thrilled!
excellent riding skills
I would love to ride like that, from tv
Looks like a cycling “Tour” enjoying friendship. From inside is UFC carnage.
Watched it at 2x. Afraid for their lives.
great video
The Speed is Amazing !!!
Holy crap. Intense is the word.
Me estresa mucho este vídeo.
it is a f*cking miracle that there are so few sprint accidents if you see this. And Those who still yell like hell are imho not tired enough :p
they are beasts
Just amazing
That's mad Great Video.
Damn that was so awesome! :o I wonder at what speed they were going. I'd be so scared to make an accident as you can't really slow down or move much when there's someone at only 1 feet from you in every direction.
Top sprint speed around 42 mph. But on descents they reach well over 60 mph
PanzerIV top speed at finish line about 70kph, the hole finish at 60kph or more
As a chief executive of /b/rochan, I Le appruve this video.
omg, that tiresound in the corner at 2:11
It's actually brakes squeeling
Mornay van Heerden
*squealing
Mario Pescaru Peter Sagan is the Man!...no fear into that corner
+davidoffon ...that was him on the inside of that turn... he's wearing the red polka dot
Insane!!
great stuff
0:29 Wow, they're certainly not shy about clearing the way for themselves, are they?
I love it!
This cycling awesome
peter sagan el mejor
Legal!
Does anyone knows the average speed on this competitions?
DrMorocho Average speed? Depends on the terrain. 26-27mph average for a whole race. 40mph during a finish sprint.
Geez! I still have a long way to go before reaching those speeds. Cheers.
DrMorocho Don't get your hopes down because these sprints are a collaborative effort. They can't hit 40mph without some kind of help from rivals/ teammates. It also helps that they get to hang onto the wheels of world class cyclists to pull them up to speed.

+DrMorocho 40 km/h
this is the benefit of technology.
Awesome!!
If an amateur rider with no pro experience sit in that kind of peloton, there's gonna be a crash. Damn those bike handling skills and communication!
The thing is, they can't sit in that group even if they tried. They'd be dropped as the strategy is to keep speed high. Once speed is high, you drop all the weaker riders, and only the fastest ones can even keep up in the last 1000M. Leaving only the top guys to sprint each other.
2:10
More of them.
Damn exciting! Wow.
peter sagan cornering min. 2:05 NICE
Modulo won, followed by Sagan and then degenkolb
how fast are they going?
Instant adrenaline rush
0:30 that legit to do that? push rider out of the way (or poke them to step away)??
Only Sagan could dive the corner like that and not get screamed at
AWESOME
