wow what an insight for the general public to see what goes off in the final km's of a sprint stage, very impressed with the action, & we've all seen Cav win before but to watch him at work like that was awesome !
Don't ever want anyone to crash, but it's a given that with every road race comes some sort of spectacular carnage, just like there are usually fights in Hockey. If you watch enough roadie racing you'll start to see what I mean. Figure that'd be an incredible perspective compared to what we normally see. With this perspective you really get a sense for their close proximity, speed, and full contact which otherwise appears pretty docile. Roadies are always funny when they wreck-more often than not they appear to be surprised and in complete denial as if they never knew it could happen to them. An mtb racer never wants or plans to go down, but when it happens the last thing we do is act surprised.
sorry guys... but this technology has to STAY! It is awesome to watch! Great job making it work with the UCI! I hope it'll be a feature too at the tour de france!
Sprints are already exciting - this point of view brings it over the top - this is one of the best things for fans and hope the UCI continues to allow this in other races!
I recognized a young Peter Sagan in green, a younger Cavendish with the rainbow on his sleeves as well as a certain Matteo Trentin towards the end. Awesome footage!
OK, this was amazing. For those of us who LOVE to cycle, but have never competed in a cycling race (wrestling/lacrosse/college rugby: yes. Sprint finish going +40mph: nope) this was truly amazing. I am used to the yells and shouts from the commentator booths (Sporza/BeIn/Sky/Eurosport) and the overdubbed fan noise at the sprints----but here you just hear the gears and chains and occasional rider barking orders. And the speed...oh my! I better sit down on my couch again!
this is definitely the future of viewing cycle races I want to see as a permanent feature for the Tour would love to have a on board cam of Cavendish coming down the Champs Elysee.
Its like Cav has a turbo fitted - all of a sudden he jumps 3 or 4 bike lengths and he's gone. Mighty impressive sense of where he is and where he needs to put his bike.
Fascinating. Information overload. Most of this stuff is missed on TV. I can't think of a reason why cameras would be banned. The ultimate scenario would be the viewer being able to switch between each riders front and rear cams while watching live TV :)
You won't see cameras on bikes at the Giro, this was a test. Shimano and the Tour of California got special permission from the UCI to test these cameras on bikes at this race. Don't expect to see camera's on bikes at every race for quite a while
forlani1972 John Degenkolb could, to be even more near the rear wheel of Koen de Kort. John Degenkolb is his mate Koen de Kort. (giant shimano team). Marck cavendish is smart and knew that Koen de Kort continued in front of the race. John Degenkolb must learn and courage to stay close tight, it's a win for cycling technique.
In order for a leadout to work the team needs to stay together and all riders respect that. John just let's the other riders know he's there, you can see he's not even pushing, just protecting position, something that's done often and when done without danger (like now) completely accepted. In last case when Cavendish takes my wheel John ends up between Hushovd en Cavendish and you can hear him shout 'Cav' to try to warn him he's still there and in general everyone always makes space for a sprinter to follow his leadout man but there was simply not enough time before the important corner anymore and John was left no choice but sit on the wheel of Mark.
Nice explanation. When you loose your sprinter do you continue like you still have him behind you or do you let the other sprinter come through early to tire himself out? John was very close to catching Cav.
Richard McDonough you can hear me constantly check whether he's still behind me, every time he says 'ja' or 'ok' I yelled his name before it. If we lose John we always try to pick him up again by waiting or trying to make space so he can come back. In this case I didn't realise I lost him until just before the last corner. Normally I wouldn't do a leadout in the centre of the road but because I didn't know where John was I wanted to give him space on both sides of the road.
One of these www.bikeradar.com/news/article/shimano-cm-1000-sport-camera-first-look-39793/ - sounds like great integration with sensors and groupset. Not long until we see F1-style telemetry with gear overlays, heart rate and power traces.
The Shimano camera sounds like it has the same problem that the original sony action cameras had. The vibrating of the camera's internal parts drive me crazy. It would sound better if they fixed it.
1:06, there was clearly enough space to his left, he squeezes to his right instead so other cyclist could not pass and he yelled "go away" at the same time, is that "normal behaviour" for pro cyclists in a bunch sprint? I thought it's a dick move
Robin Chen its all about positioning. He knows that a right turn is coming so to increase your advantage you need to be as close to the curb as possible.
+Robin Chen It was kinda rude, what you don't see is what is ahead and what the riders see. Replay it, there is a car parked on the right side ahead of them seen when they pass it. If the rider knows he is going to pass near that car, there is no room for the rider on the right to pass, he is going to hit the car. The rider that states 'go away' is not going to lose his position and is not going to move left due to other riders in the pack.
+Glenn Olua competition at that level can be downright brutal. Keep in mind there's money at stake here and only first place maters. if you think this is bad, you should listen to some of the shit talking in critical races where only your pride is on the line.
This will never gets old. You'll never get bored. Feel the adrenaline rush!!!
I love hearing the real audio instead of an announcers voice. Very cool.
wow what an insight for the general public to see what goes off in the final km's of a sprint stage, very impressed with the action, & we've all seen Cav win before but to watch him at work like that was awesome !
better coverage than on TV. Hands down
John Degenkolb Rocks ;-)
*****
Yeah that is such a sweet perspective. A wreck would have been amazing
Thomas Wait You want the riders to crash? Really?
Don't ever want anyone to crash, but it's a given that with every road race comes some sort of spectacular carnage, just like there are usually fights in Hockey. Thomas Wait IF you had felt the pain coming off a roadie at 50+ I'm sure you wouldn't wish that upon anyone....
Man, those photographers on the right were really in a precarious place.
sorry guys... but this technology has to STAY!
It is awesome to watch! Great job making it work with the UCI!
I hope it'll be a feature too at the tour de france!
Intense! I love it! Def need this at the tour! Especially so we can hear the riders yell at each other
Beautiful footage!!! Cavendish is like a little wolverine!
I CAN WATCH THIS WHOLE DAY EVEN IF IT'S A FULL RACE COVERAGE
Sprints are already exciting - this point of view brings it over the top - this is one of the best things for fans and hope the UCI continues to allow this in other races!
we hope soon, that the UCI should understand by now that we're super-technological, you can not say "no"
This is freakin AWESOME. More, please.
BEST FILM I'VE EVER SEEN ABOUT CYCLING, AWESOME !!!! thank you !!
unbelievable!!! The speed is oustanding!!
I recognized a young Peter Sagan in green, a younger Cavendish with the rainbow on his sleeves as well as a certain Matteo Trentin towards the end. Awesome footage!
Cav is so sneaky closing the zipper on Degenkolb, but Degenkolb is so fast that he still almost gets him at the line. Awesome vid!!!!
Bravo Shimano!
That is frickin' awesome! More of this for the upcoming TDF please.
WE NEED MORE OF THIS PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!
"OFF!...go away". I'm stealing that one. I really hope they roll it out for the other tours, all teams.
This is awesome.
Yes, yes it is.
OK, this was amazing. For those of us who LOVE to cycle, but have never competed in a cycling race (wrestling/lacrosse/college rugby: yes. Sprint finish going +40mph: nope) this was truly amazing. this is just what is needed, cycling on tv is so dated and footage is so poor, they need to make it mediatory for 1-2 cameras per team or something
Sagan, Cav, Degenkolb...Ultimate Sprint-Beasts. Kort did a great Job that Day.
this is definitely the future of viewing cycle races I want to see as a permanent feature for the Tour would love to have a on board cam of Cavendish coming down the Champs Elysee.
2:31 "damn it!" as he gets squeezed out haha
Its like Cav has a turbo fitted - all of a sudden he jumps 3 or 4 bike lengths and he's gone. Mighty impressive sense of where he is and where he needs to put his bike.
great footage!
That's me in the car on the left @1:19 Man oh man am I sad that this event is off the calendar. It was a magical week every year.
Degenkolb to the Jelly Beans dude "GO AWAY!" fucking awesome LOL!
God that is fast, amazing video, thanks
Fascinating. Information overload. Most of this stuff is missed on TV. I can't think of a reason why cameras would be banned. The ultimate scenario would be the viewer being able to switch between each riders front and rear cams while watching live TV :)
FINALLY, VIDEO WITHOUT CUTS IS THIS, VIDEO MUST BE VERY WELL, YES LAST 3 KM!!!! GOOD, DO YOU CONTINUE TO THE NEXT STAGE 9, 10 etc...etc...
There were only 8 stages in the Tour of California where this footage was shot
Mike Evans OK, NOW AT TOUR OF ITALY , TEAM GIANT SHIMANO MARCEL KITTEL???
Stefano Faggian Marcel Kittel pulled out of the Giro d'Italia after Stage 3, today is stage 10
ok ok , THERE ARE 8 OF TEAM GIANT CYCLING SHIMANO.
SO I HOPE SOMEONE TO INSTALL TO MAKE THE MOVIE.
WAITING TO HEAR THE NEWS.
MAYBE NOT YET HERE ITALY
You won't see cameras on bikes at the Giro, this was a test. Shimano and the Tour of California got special permission from the UCI to test these cameras on bikes at this race. Don't expect to see camera's on bikes at every race for quite a while
Just got one of these cameras. Nice little unit. sound is a little fish bowl-ish
Please make these a permanent fixture in the peloton!
Please make UCI allow this, love how close you can get to riders and the atmosphere of the peloton !
Was that Cavendish who won?
this enhances the viewers experience SO MUCH. just like Formula 1, they should be live broadcasting these. come on UCI jump on board.
that was very exciting. I hope they will allow cameras at champ elysees
Awesome!
THE Coolest video ever!
can someone make out what Degenkolb was saying when Cavendish got infront of him at the 2:29 mark?
SEE VIDEO RIGHT THERE RED JERSEY, John Degenkolb LOCKED FOR HIM (RED JERSEY).
LEFT is FREE, MARK LUCKY
"CAV!! DAMN IT!!"
roborovski008 Could it be: Cav, Get in?
he said "Cav! .. Cav!" to tell Koen de Kort that he is no longer behind his rear wheel and Cavendish took the place.
forlani1972
John Degenkolb could, to be even more near the rear wheel of Koen de Kort.

Marck cavendish is smart and knew that Koen de Kort continued in front of the race.
John Degenkolb must learn and courage to stay close tight, it's a win for cycling technique.
Holy crap, it's crazy how much faster these guys are going in the final KM's of a race than the lowly cat 4 races I partake in...
That's an adrenaline rush just watching it! Awesome.
awesome!
And they said: sprinting is the easiest thing of cycling. Yeah, sure. Hard as hell. Amazing video
Was that Peter Sagan (of Cannondale)?
+50guitar yes
Degenkolb disposes of those two local(?) riders at 0:40 and 1:00 pretty decisively - were they not allowed to participate in the sprint? ;)
He was also afraid to do the same to Cavendish?
In order for a leadout to work the team needs to stay together and all riders respect that. John just let's the other riders know he's there, you can see he's not even pushing, just protecting position, something that's done often and when done without danger (like now) completely accepted. koendekort
thanks Koen that's great to hear it from you directly :)
Woooeee!! Pro Sprinters.. I knew it! ARE .. Super Human! I just never have been able to fully comprehend that.. until now! Yeah!!
oh the memories
Love all the bumping and banging. The "argie bargie" if you will. Good stuff! Too bad Mark is too fast for Degenkolb!
Unbelievable .. New cameras are great. Lets see some coverage about your new cameras and how they are built and such....
"Go away!" love it!
That's the exact same annoying rattling sound my GoPro makes. What's up with that?
Awesome shot! Thanks!!
love it
AWWESOME!
Would be nice to see the speed. they are going.
Holly shit, those guys were flying!
Guys any idea at what speed these riders are riding ? Looks pretty fast
30mph in sprints they reach about 45mph i think. Pretty fast yeah :)
43 - 45 mph if there is no wind. Keep in mind that's after 100+ miles of riding that day.
EliteScenes It's a lot faster than that. Normal peloton about 40-45 km/h, sprints can be up to 80-85 km/h, downhills frequently 110-115 km/h.
"80-85 km/h' LOL 150000 km/h no ?
1:07 "Go away."
What kind of camera is used for this? Something other than a gopro right?
One of these www.bikeradar.com/news/article/shimano-cm-1000-sport-camera-first-look-39793/ - sounds like great integration with sensors and groupset. Not long until we see F1-style telemetry with gear overlays, heart rate and power traces.
When the guy on the Giant get's dropped and simultaneously get's pissed at the dudes riding faster than him. Coffee came out my nose.
The Shimano camera sounds like it has the same problem that the original sony action cameras had. The vibrating of the camera's internal parts drive me crazy. It would sound better if they fixed it.
Peter sagan second?
doesn't yell at mark cavendish
thats mad!
I got this camera!
Would be nice to have some overlays with cadence, HRM, power & speed etc.
IT IS TRUE,It would be nice to have overlapping ALSO OF TWO MOVIES, FRONT AND BACK, YOU SEE MY VIDEOS THAT I HAVE LOADED.
With the Garmin Virb camera, the overlays are standard.
Funny to see him pushing riders from smaller teams out the way but when Cav and Hushovd come to play he hasn't got an answer
Yea Peter sagan! !
they should get bells instead of pushing and yelling at each other
no
Degenkolb was 2nd
Intence!!!!!
Best part was when cav and thor brushed shoulders to pop Degenkolb :)
"ohh go away!"
lol'd
1:06, there was clearly enough space to his left, he squeezes to his right instead so other cyclist could not pass and he yelled "go away" at the same time, is that "normal behaviour" for pro cyclists in a bunch sprint? I thought it's a dick move

+Einhander49 I meant to say crit races, not critical lol.
Pretty fast
where is the data! I want data! :D
Here be the Quacking.
0:40 1:06 and 2:23 shitting all over jelly belly. wtf
CAV!!!!
Ah the power of EPO
Sagan almost won. :(

hohohohohohohoho
Bad!!
Lol they averaged 60km/h in that time
m.cavendish again win
