Adding HDMI To The Original PlayStation

- Today I wanted to show a project I started this week where I was looking to build the ultimate PlayStation system. To start I wanted to take a look at a new option when it comes to getting the best possible video from the console: HDMI. This board will pull the best possible signal from the motherboard and convert it for our newer TVs and monitors.

I want to see this done with a PS2. It would be incredible!
I heard it’s coming just not sire when
@@user-yk1cw8im4h A PS2 ODE (Maybe one that can read from the IDE slot) and HDMI mod would be amazing. Though I think a PS2 ODE exclusive to the PS2 slim is probably more likely to happen first.
I just use a pound hdmi adapter. Cheap easy solution and I’ve got nearly 90 hours on dragon quest 8 with no problems using one.
Would be cool, no doubt about it.
We all know theres currently a solution via HDD. It is fast and reliable. But certainly it is kind of old and not everybody has an HDD.
So yeah, even though FreeMCBoot with a HDD pretty much does what an ODE would, the ODE would really be like the ultimate, faster and easier solution. Although expensive, for sure.
@@tyisafk There are so many easy ways to play PS2 games I can't see an ODE happening. Pure digital HDMI is being made by citrus3000psi and chriz2600 (DCDigital, PSDigital etc) though, and boy will the PS2 benefit from it! (hopefully).
Great channel man. I'm a 40 year-old would be gamer, but I manage to provide my kids with some good gaming experiences! Which means no time for dad to play.
Anyway, just found your channel intending to fix the Switch (not doing any micro-soldering). Love how in-depth you go, keep it understandable for the layman. No surprise you have 1/2M subs. Good work.
Considering the PS3 runs all PS1 games through HDMI, I kept my old PS1 100% stock and simply connected it to my old Sony Wega CRT for that nostalgic authenticness 😁🤓👍
I gave my PS1 and a library of about 25 games and *every* official demo released, to my niece when I bought my PS2 - That PS2 and _its_ library and demos went to the same niece when I got my PS3; bought her a dance mats, lightguns, Eyetoy etc..
She loved and played the hell out of them but it all got left behind in a house they had to leave when she was about 13 cus of life stuff.. breaks my heart in many ways, that story :(
*Edit:* rereading your comment; I don't know what made my type this reply.. but you somehow hit me in the nostalgia/guilt/remorse feels
@Piero Luciano
And this is in my Opinion the best way to uphold that nostalgic Feeling. I had a medium-sized Videogame Collection with a nice Chunk of Retro Systems like a modded PS1 hooked to a Sony Trinitron 29" CRT (😍) and it was awesome. But in time i neglected them more and more and one Day i decided to part Ways with them and sell them to make Space for new Stuff.
@@TomSir79 True! True! There's just something awesome about those Sony Trinitrons/WEGAs! Cheers! 👍
PS3 is shit emulation with input lag and the image looks bad.
The oscillation was a “security” feature that Sony used to secure lock its games.
Your PS1 has the I/O port so you could probably use the PSIO to play games from SD card if you can find one . It would allow you to still use the disc drive as well .
that thing sucks, ODE way better
@@c0rpse1 at least they have the option, any benefit is a W and we're take those!
@@c0rpse1 It will work is the point . Are you going to name one that will work with his motherboard or just take cheap shots at PSIO .
@@bryanobrien2726 scammers
you still need to solder and cut traces for that.
Spawn wave 2 weeks from now: Alright guys I managed to get a hdmi inside a ds
Spawn wave more like rgt 85
Gameboy
I noticed the power light on his ps1 wasn't on when he was showing it off on his Samsung monitor🤔 megaman was playing but his ps1 power wasn't on... mmm
That would be heaven. My only other dream is to have 64 ds With full analog control, then i could die a happy man
**2 hdmi's
I'd rate this mod's difficulty as: Nail-biter
Goddamm this is calling out to me. This will be a good project for me to take on.
The Wi-fi antenna and OTA firmware updates capabilities are a nice touch.
I want a syphonfilter remake so bad!!
@The programming crypto guy
Yeah they are stuck making lame single player "experiences"
PS2 was the last true PlayStation
But you could taser the doods till they caught on fire
The ultimate Playstation would be a ps5 that plays all ps1234 games
Wouldn’t that have been nice?
That would have made me have the doubt of wich next gen I'll get first LOL even thoug I have quite a lot of X360 games, the good ol' PS1,PS2 and PS3 have a lot of love to offer.
😶in an alternate reality
Man I'd be happy just to be able to buy a PS5 at all right now haha
I've got that Samsung monitor. It's a beauty.
what's the model name
@@souit957 couldn't even tell you
I have it too, I believe it's samsung ur55. It's a 4k 28 inch monitor and it's compatible with hdr10.
@@estebanarriaga8201 That's the one. Been using it with my MacBook Pro 13
@@adamburke4738 yeah it's great. I bought for my ps5 I haven't been disappointed yet.
You should do reviews on products that upscaled retro consoles like the retrotink 2x pro and m classic. Would like to hear your thoughts. Great vid!
Never gonna give you up is in 4K-res now
Have it, love it. Cant play without it. No hassle, 100% compatibility. Crisp image, very clear audio.
You could install a PS-IO as well and still retain disc access since it plugs into the I/O port in the back. I've had mine for a couple of years and it's great!
I recently found a custom case for this retro console... 😄
Would be awesome to combine it with an HDMI MOD 👌
I'll be checking for a video from you! 🤞
I've gone from wanting a PS5 to now wanting a Playstation 😅
Twisted metal 2 split screen co op is better then cyberpunk 2077
Easier to get
Such incredible cover art alone on that game
Well right now I am having a PS1 and a PS2 getting shipped to me right now the PS1 is coming to me on Saturday and the PS2 is coming on Monday
@@CEfect if you have a OG ps2 you can install a hardrive in it and install games on it,
There are a few options when it comes to an ODE. XStation, Terraonion MODE & PSIO. I personally bought the XStation.
I have a PSIO. I prefer it over the the other two since you can just remove it form the parallel port then you'll be able to play your official discs. (At least for me. You can supposedly boot a disc from the PSIO menu but it doesn't work for me for some reason, but it may have to do with my shitty soldering job installing the switch board lmao)
Great video, however, the sad truth most retro gamers dont want to hear is that PS1 looks its best on a CRT with the default AV cables. It smooths out the jaggies and you cant see the dithering. Anything above S-Video, Component up to HDMI just makes the image way too sharp and jagged and you see dithering EVERYWHERE. Silent Hill 1 is barely playable for me with all the dithering.
I have a old sony bravia plasma TV I think it looks better than crt
I agree that consoles look best with the same era T.V. but dithering has always been visible no matter what is used.
I just settled for using my PS2, and an HDMI adapter for it. It puts out a nice image, and my HDTV can handle the up-scaling.
I like to see the pixels in ps1 games, i like the retro gaming feeling.
I appreciate you and your channel. Really enjoy these types of videos you make, thank you.
Pretty cool, the output looks super crisp.
God, I love the way Siphon Filter characters just stand there with their torso rotating like they're some kind of model or something.
This is a great system with PS1Digital. I have done two PS1Digital mods and one xStation so far; if I want to play with disks I can do that also. Putting so much money into these you should also recap the power supply and potentially the mainboard. I used cheap flipdown magifiers and cheap USB microscope to inspect the work. Enjoy!
This is amazing. The quality really looks top notch. It's funny how the kit is so modern and how it costs way more than what one of those consoles is going for now. But it's great seeing what the dedicated people in the community of fans of the PS1 are able to pull off. Super cool.
yup, that + xstation + memcardpro + blueretro and you are set with an amazing console.
Dude! Thank you for making videos like this. I’m getting into retro system modding and the PS1 is definitely on the list. I would love to be able to install an SD reader as well.
I love this! It's like Austin Evans' Ultimate ______ Build videos, but you actually do some PCB modding and upgrading of retro tech. Kind of what I think AE should do (even though he's more surface level 'modding' than PCB level modding).
9:20 It's so weird see a low quality game with high definition 😆
Interesting idea! Would love to see similar ultimate systems for other consoles like the dreamcast, SNES, N64 etc
The dreamcast and n64 both have pure digital hdmi mods. Not one for the snes but you could get a rad2x hdmi cable and pair it with an snes that outputs rgb.
Love these style of videos! Keep them up!!
Ya the end result looks fantastic, but that solder work is utterly astonishing
Nice that you gave some pointers on how to solder the little legs
looks really good and sounds REALLY crisp! Nice job! :)
You have an I/O port on the back, so you could install a PSIO by Cybdyn. You will be able to boot games from an SD card via the I/O port and still us CD games if you want via the laser.
I love that he collects the same consoles i get right as i get them, it helps insanely
Syphon Filter brought back memories. I used to play these games a lot back in the day. I love the theme music and I hade even made my own version of it as a tutorial to FruityLoops - now I just need to find where I have saved it...
Playstation was my childhood
Syphon filter could use a remake or just a new game I played most of them even the psp games
Same! I bought a PlayStation just so I can play *Digimon* games after seeing both *"Digimon World 2"* and *"Digimon: Digital Card Battle"* at my cousin's house! :D
Great video. When I saw the kind soldering you had to do I said forget it. I’ll deal with the blur of component to hdmi. Or get a PS3. Your skill is something else!
Yeah that's insane how well it was done.
I would love to have an ultimate PS2, considering that I never had a PS1 nor really any physical PS1 game, but I really liked what you did to your PS1, the result looks awesome.
Oh man, Siphon Filter, I forgot that game existed. What a throwback
The junk piles of tech you have laying around must be glorious.
I hope that you will do a video when the N64 digital comes out. Yes I know you have already done a N64 HDMI kit already with the HDMI Ultra but I would love to see some comparisons between the two and your thoughts on installation.
I was originally going to criticize the choice of spending a considerable amount of money to play ps1 games on HDMI, considering a PS2 gives you component (close if not equal to HDMI in many examples). And since the ps2 has literally a ps1 inside, it really might be the most convenient solution.
But then i remember i spent more than a few dollars on carby, a mod chip, and SD/SD2SP2 for my gamecube, when i could have just used my Wii with retro compatibility over component.
So yeah, i respect this. Enjoy your mods people, they are very, very rewarding.
Component of the ps2 doesn’t look that great tbh, this hdmi mod is miles ahead with its scaling ability
@@user-yk1cw8im4h Uh... No pal. HDMI directly from the ps2 must look gorgeous, yes. But dont throw dirt on PS2. Its component output is great, not good, great. I hooked mine up with original PS3 component cables to a Sony WEGA KLV 21SR2. It looks great, asks nothing to a modern display.
So yeah, i respect hdmi. But ps2 component is great. You might be using cheap cables and a modern tv, or a cheap crt.
took me a good minute to realize when he said “cross” he was talking about the x button lol
The image here is SO much cleaner than the PS3 offers!
Because the emulation on the PS3 sucks.
I’ve installed a few of them now. The video and audio is amazing. It’s too bad you can’t install the xstation because it’s really fantastic too! Makes firing up games so easy. Nice video on the process and letting people know about the challenges with the GPU cable. How would you say it compares to installing the DCdigital?
did you know that there is a fan patch for resident evil 3 ps1 version that removes the censoring? when you kick a zombies head, it goes of like in re1 and 2,.there is also a mod which uses high quality videos (from the gamecube version i think), with 30fps instead of the 15fps of the original, also its fullscreen, on ps1 it was weirdly cropped to 16:9. so if you are ever are in mood of replaying resident evil 3, go for the uncensored version
11:44 - The Legend of Dragoon save file
I'm interested in adding this to my X-Station equipped model, but.... 1) I had a really hard time with X-Station, now I'm totally scared to open it up again and screwing things up.
2 ) I have it hook it up to a little crt with rgb scart cables. It looks amazing. 3) I think duckstation is amazing on pc, and since I have a memcardpro I can sync memory cards if I want to play some psx on the big screen.
If I manage to get some extra money , I might invest on making another ps1 ( I have another compatible one ) with x-station + hdmi + other mods to make the ultimate version... but for now I think this will sit around for a while as a dream.
Mega man Legends. All the nostalgia hit. I hope they do a reboot or new series open-world game of Megaman again. I would love that.
I just love him so much! Thanks for the content ma man.
this playstation is missing the rca jacks those are so nice because you do not need to find some proprietary cable like you would with other videogame systems. i love how all the new systems use hdmi for the same reason
Meanwhile i crapped my pants taking the top off my ps4 slim the other day
Digging the upgrade series man, let's go find you that sd card, then that would really make it age a lot better than the classic mini. Looking buff in the coordinated clothing too my dude. Remember the philosophy: better to look good in cheap shirts than look bad in expensive ones.
Hey guys, this is Austin
I thought first that this was an Austin Evans video
I’d love to see a comparison between this and the PS3 output to see how much better it is. Also, I think for the money you should save a few extra dollars and just get a Retrotink5x or a Steam deck(emulation).
Yes, it's neat. You've upgraded the PS1 🙂. I do think it needs more shaders. I've found 3 best shaders: advanced-aa, 2xScaleHQ, & super-eagle. If it could get a filter thing going on with those particular shaders, that would seal the deal for the picture 👌🙂. Oh! & was thinking about you doing this for PS2 as well.
You should definitely do a video installing the XStation. That would make this the absolute Ultimate PlayStation.
Edit: There's also something called the MODE but I've been seeing that people prefer the XStation.
He would need to get someone to install it for him as he doesn't actually do these installs himself, he just records clips of him poking things with his soldering iron to fool you into thinking he did everything himself.
The X-Station is better than the MODE simply because it offers the same basic functionality at a fraction of the cost, and looks way neater when installed.
the audio quality is amazing
The term for them is ODE (Optical drive emulator). The one I've seen the most is the XStation but again like HDMi mods they are pricey.
The best on RUclips hands down
Cool! I recently bought a brand new original PS1 for 500$ to have it in my collection, as I used it 23 years ago. Nostalgia! 😂
Brand new?
@@crenshaw22 Yes :D
I loved the original playstation and it is great to see this mod is available for it. I definitely want to collect more older consoles (like my Dreamcast) to play them today and play them for the next 20+ years. The PS1 is now under consideration.
I'm looking to build the ultimate PlayStation too! I got a PU-18 motherboard ps1 and the XStation coming in the mail. I'm just waiting for the ps1Digital to be in stock.
thanks to this video, i fould out about 2 ps1 games i used to play but completely forgot about.
Regardless of which ODE you decide to go with you will need a PU-18 board. You can find that easily, and for pretty cheap still, on the 5501 PlayStation. I went with the xStation on mine. It was cheaper, and despite liking the user interface on the MODE better, I felt like the MODE was an afterthought for the PSX.
I use a MODE ODE in my PS1 with PS1Digital, but I think it's also limited to the PU-18 motherboard revision and requires a bit of extra hardware and soldering, unlike it's Saturn and Dreamcast installs.
I have one of these coming in the mail, but I will attempt it myself one day
MVG needs a chat. Lol. Great video man. Vagrant Story beckons.
*RTU plays PS5 on GameGear screen*
Spawnwave: Hold my beer...
its nice how ever I don't black bars I like full screen better
should show a side by side comparison of the games running before and after the upgrade.
This may be the 1st time I've like a Spawnwave video
I know everyone resorts to emulators, but will you perhaps cover a physical gameplay options for the 3DS to HDMI?
Katsukitty isn't readily accessible and nothing else has seemed promising
X-station is only compatible with a PU7 PU8 or PU18 motherboard. There is the PSIO from Cybdyn sold through Stone Age Gamer. I opted for that since since I didn't want to go looking for specific motherboards.
My Favorite game series Mega Man Legends! Capcom should make a remaster also with Legends 3 for Nintendo Switch. The nostalgia of the switch would blend with the series well.
Damn I loved that console, really cool changeup!
The Xstation ODE for Ps1 is phenomenal although it’s on compatible with PSU-18 and late 8 motherboards. I’m pretty sure the 18 is compatible with Xstation and ps1 digital
That was very cool good job
I got waaaay too excited when I saw that Mega Man Legends loading screen
too bad we didn't get to see you solder down the ribbon cable on the cpu, i've seen ppl do the n64 ultra hdmi and it looks hard to do. that's awesome that you were able to solder that yourself
I found an original PlayStation one at goodwill for 12 bucks a few weeks ago. This is interesting!
I would love to have this mod just for the challenge of the installation...
Mega damn man legends, it has been a while, and I'M STILL WAITING on Legends 3 :/
Good work thanks for the video
I didn't install a HDMI port, instead I bought HDretrovision cables and scart cables, so I can hook it up either to my PVM or Flatscreen. I prefer RBG instead of HDMI but that's just me.
As much as I like the idea of a HDMI mod, the installation is just too risky for me. I'd rather just buy the Pound cables or wait for Retrobit to make adaptors for the old consoles... but I have CRTs, so I'm fine for now for my nostalgic retro experience.
I love watching this kind of stuff. I thought about doing this with some of my consoles, but I know I would just destroy them lol.
I wish you did a side by side with a ps3 to see the difference all in all great video
Syphon Filter 2 theme music sounds excellent.
I wonder if tronicfix would be interested in installing those cables and doing upgrades.
Good video. You make it look so easy.
Would have been good to have seen a comparison between the outputs, to see the difference in quality.
How to build the ultimate Playstation?
Step 1 - buy a George Forman grill ps3 console.
That's not building it. That's buying something that's build. Wheres your logic? 🤣🤔
@@Melbester9 you like to ignore facts. he did not build the Playstation himself, his is bought as well. It is equivalent to buying a pre-built PC , then buying a new video card. the ps3 is the best Playstation. I guess your brain did not factor in all the things I mentioned. Congratulations you played yourself 😆🤣
imagine the final product looking rlly cool
Would be interested to see a side by side shot of this mod and a PS3 running the same game. It's been a while but I don't remember ps1 games looking as good as that through a ps3, but maybe I'm mistaken?
Definitely long overdue a mod like this for ps2. The cheap Scart to HDMI adapter I got from amazon is terrible, but fortunately I'm able to run composite into my Bravia TV, which makes it just about playable.
Scart must of been on of the longest lasting audio/visual connectors ever .Must of had at least a 20 year life span before something better come along
That's cool! I would really like to see someone attempt to build a real PlayStation that can play all PlayStation games. Like multiple systems in one unit. I wonder if it's possible.
@The programming crypto guyI would like to see one machine do it all but since Sony locks down their network to only approved devices then even if someone could put console boards together with maybe a custom output switch I think it would be cool. Actually best of all coverage is a launch PS3 and a PS5 but those are hard to come by. It would be an envied product for sure.
