During Covid times, I had nothing else to photograph except little critters in my household garden. I used expansion tubes and an old D screw style nikon lens and it was a fun learning experience. I will for sure consider this Purger lens if I delve on further into the macro field. Beautiful video, Matt. Thank you. The Micro Nikkor Z 105 f/2.8 was one of my first Z system purchases and for right now, my "walk around street lens" for every day is the 50mm MC f/2.8 Nikkor. There are so many wonderful things in every day life to see in macro range. Your video was GREAT. I'm amazed at how sharp the landscapes looked. You are a craftsman, and given tools outside of your bailiwick, you do amazing work. Thank you.
Love this video. Super relaxed... easy to watch. I feel good watching your vids. Interesting lens... though I'm not interested in it, I'm always interested in hearing your candid analysis. The images look great Matt. For a non-macro photographer, you make many self-professed professionals look amateurish. The images really are great. Thanks for the review. 👏
Thanks for, ah, drilling down into this subject, Matt! Not a lens I'd buy, since I have the NIKKOR Z 105mm F/2.8 MC. But this does look like an interesting option at the price. Again, I want to thank you for your support, especially these last weeks. Cheers, Mate!
Great real-world use review of this lens. You’re correct I would say in your assessment that the image looked quite soft at f/22 due to diffraction. I’ve never seen a macro lens review where the lens didn’t start to become at least a bit soft even at f/16 at 1:1 let alone at 2x magnification.
Love following your blogs, but have a question not related to this one. Looking at the 3 Legged Thing Zooey QD L plate for the Nikon Z8. Using a Black Rapid strap, do you feel the QD socket is stable enough to use for an all day shoot? Thanks again - and do keep up the great work. Thanks Don B
My first thought is that it looks front heavy. Like if you mount your camera on a ball head the lens weight might make it sag after you let go. That is very frustrating, especially for macro. Also, lack of autofocus means no focus stacking and that is quite important. I bought the 105mm macro Z lens because my old AIS Nikon 105 macro lens would not longer autofocus on a Z camera. I tried focus stacking maually with it and the focus breathing defeated me. You might have mentioned the focus breathing of this lens for that reason.
Matt, is Nikon hinting at possibly releasing a new digital rangefinder in the spirit of the Nikon SP? Strong vibes in their newest video, "The Next Century of Nikkor" I believe. It would be the ultimate!
I look at resolution as the number of pixels per unit area of sensor. Using this criterion the 20.9 MP Nikon APS-C sensor has higher resolution that the 45.7 MP full frame sensor, though not by a huge amount. Can you put more pixels on a subject with the full frame? Sure, but only if you can get close enough with mm of focal length or in actual distance, not always possible in the field with live subjects. I shoot a LOT of dragonflies, damselflies, butterflies, etc. so I know. Full frame does have other advantages though, so that's what I use.

I have a Z9 and the D850 with the F mount 105mm 2.8 and FTZ adaptor. I can use it for portraits. The Pergear seems like too much work for one who just dabbles in macro.
Hey Matt I have a video request for you, could you try the sigma 24-70 2.8 ii with a megathap pro e mount to z mount on a Nikon body. Nikon doesn’t have an affordable 24-70 2.8 like the sigma one and I think this would be a good option 💯‼️
As a z user I’ve learnt my lesson with previous lens’ and recommend that you spend as much as you can afford. I only buy z lenses now even if it takes a while to save up. I can’t understand that if you buy a z camera even second hand why would you then buy a cheap lens. Previously had sigma and tamron, they may be cheaper but they are not as good.
Hi David, it is about choice, it is about some people may not what to spend that for macro, it is about experimentation. And a gateway to experiment. The user may find they love macro and want to continue, or they may not.

If you buy a cheap camera then you’re more likely to buy a cheap lens, if you buy an expensive camera you don’t want a cheap lens which would make your experience disappointing. People who spend on more expensive cameras should know what they are doing.

i have the Laowa 100mm F 2.8 2X Ultra Macro Nikon Z - MF, before any Nikon Z Macro lens exist and it's great Lens.

Have both f and z 105macro lenses ,great for portraits as well,don’t need this as well.
