I moved here back in May from Illinois. I’d just survived the Chicago winter and went straight into a Tucson summer. It was brutal! But now that I’m experiencing my first mild winter, I love it here. Tucson is a hidden gem in my humble opinion.

I definitely understand coming from a cold area. I spent the last 20 years in Northern Wyoming in the winter there's are absolutely brutal. 2 years ago I moved to Tucson in september and it was kind of weird because I went from almost early winter weather to Summer again. I've spent two Winters down here now and I absolutely love it. I still go back up to Wyoming but it's usually for a month or less just to visit my kids

moved to Tucson in 2019. Homes we had looked at in previous year on a trip were reasonable. Could get a house in Casas Adobes or East side in the 200's. The pandemic struck. Our rent went from 1100 to 1800. Homes increased like 100k more than pre-pandemic. Yes it's hot but I adjusted to biking at 5am to 9am in the summers. Yes it's brown and dry, coming from PA, but that in the beauty of the desert. The 30 degree swing in temps took some getting used too. They love low taxes and the roads show it (terrible!) It's surprisingly windy and cold at times. We got snow in Casas Adobes. All in all, the AZ political climate and the undersized/overpriced housing drove I us back East in 2023.

If I'm young and ambitious I'm not settling in Tucson. Tucson is a destination city, good for retired people and lay-a-bouts. Not many jobs that don't underpay, high crime, lots of homelessness, crummy housing for rent or sale, etc.

I grew up in the Midwest but lived in the Tucson area (Sahuarita) for 7 years before moving out to the East Coast for work. It wasn’t so much the heat that would wear on me since I expected it to be hot. It was that the heat goes on for so long in comparison to other parts of the country. In September when you might expect it to cool down (bc of change of seasons elsewhere), it stays hot. October moderates a bit but it’s really not until November that you really feel like you get major relief. Having said that, though, I miss Tucson more than anything, and would trade back East Coast winters for the heat in an instant. I wanna get back to Tucson ASAP! As for terrible drivers-how about here in the DC area where people will run you over and tailgate you all day with no remorse? Gimme Tucson driving any day, please!!! • @Christopher-mu1yo
      @Christopher-mu1yo 27 дней назад

@@whatevervideos542635 Maybe a little bit but I don’t remember it being a lot different. Possibly because the house we’re in out here is older and drafty, and the AC runs a lot in the summer and it’s expensive to heat in the winter. The house in Arizona was a new build, so probably more efficient.

Apparently not as much as the southwest from CA to TX. So you experience in Houston is a part of that. Tucson ranked the 4th worst city in the country for drivers according to Forbes, and also seems to be near the top across other national worst driver lists, too. Just an excerpt:
      - Tucson ranks fourth highest for the total number of fatal car accidents (16.21 per 100,000 city residents).
      - It also ranks fourth highest for the number of people killed in fatal crashes (17.02 per 100,000 city residents).
      - Tucson has the sixth highest number of fatal car accidents involving speeding (4.94 per 100,000 city residents).
      - The city holds the 10th highest spot for the number of fatal car accidents involving a drunk driver (4.35 per 100,000 city residents).
      - Tucson reports the 10th highest number of fatal car accidents involving a distracted driver (1.1 per 100,000 city residents).

We miss Tucson all the time. We’ve lived all over and currently live in the exact opposite climate lol.
But for us, it was the heat and crime and bad school systems that made us not want to raise kids there. I couldn’t believe how many times our vehicles got vandalized or stolen and we didn’t live in a bad part of town. Plus the meth choppers flying overhead at night. A mail/package theft. A whole lot of that. And when we would file police reports to let them know, they blamed us for having mail in our mailboxes. Basically saying we should have expected crooks to be around.
So stuff like that. But it still calls us all the time. Something special about it.

I just moved here from the PNW 3 months ago. Here are my thoughts: the lack of green doesnt bother me. I think there is actually a lot of green (especially after it rains) its just a different green. I think its beautiful in a different way than back home.
The dry heat was the appeal for me, and the dry air. I love how a 90 degree feels like a 70 degree day and the dry air has been good for my eczema.
The homeless problem is a problem everywhere. Nationwide. Even cities like Anchorage have a huge homeless problem. Its just something we have to learn to live with no matter where we live.
I think its walkable, its just hot and most people are lazy and dont like to sweat. Its not the most walkable place, but the public transit that does exist is free and the weather is typically nice enough to be walking.
Yes, the drivers here are so dumb. And the potholes are a major concern. Thats the only part of your list I agree with.

Potholes are because the dirt under the pavement moves after rain and monsoons. When it rains in Tucson the dirt doesn't easily absorb the water because the rain falls very fast that when it hits the surface it travels, and thats from underneath a very short depth of dirt our lands are hard rock. It makes digging holes very hard, thats why because its a very hard rock under a bit of dirt.
So when the dirt moves under the pavement it forms holes and then the pavement crumbles in those spots creating "Potholes".

If you plan on living in Tucson, do not buy a house without a water softener. If they didn't install one, they did not take care of that house.

Tucson is dirty. The city leaders and the business community don't seem to get that being the "Dirty T" is NOT a badge of honor. It affects everything.

Life on the desert is always a matter of dust being stirred up by breezes and the wind. Much of the desert surrounding Tucson is unpaved. Never could understand why asthmatic people would come here for relief.

If you think drivers are bad here, apparently you haven't been to other major cities. For a city of a million people, these are the most courteous drivers.

I feel like the bad drivers thing was just irrelevant. Like I was just in Tucson and most states in the US over the course of a month or so, terrible drivers everywhere, try Texas metros. Far worse than Tucson. Try Californian drivers, try nasheville on the busy highway. There’s so many horrible places to drive. I was even in North Carolina and was shocked how crazy they were and with tailgating. Reminded of FL drivers

I know drivers are bad here after driving all over the country for many years. Tucson and Seattle have the worst drivers I've ever encountered.

Homes are overpriced, horrible healthcare & good luck getting into a Dr or getting your medication refilled, too much fatty food hard to find something healthy, no ocean or not many lakes to swim in except maybe one, your A/C in your home or car will go out a lot on you, electric bill is high invest in solar panels or energy saving windows, before you can get your license plates you can't have your check engine light on & if you have a used car you need to get it checked every 5 yrs since Arizona is strict on quality air pollution, I moved here but I'm thinking about going to another state in the next year.
