Even though through the generations it's been diluted some I am still so proud of that tie. Jesus Christ gave us gentiles hope where there was no hope, we had nothing until he came into the world. People take off in weird practices I have noticed since I got saved in 1978. As far as I know, I'm a gentile, but what's curious to my family is my grandfather spoke Yiddish... I have been attending a Messianic congregation in Deerfield, IL, for 7 years at Adat Hatikvah. I think my Rabbi knows Rabbi Joel Sorbo (?).
    I don't do things like cover my head, but most of the women who read out of Torah cover their heads when they read and we have Jews in our congregation who practice what they are comfortable with. I also go to Torah class after serviced on Shabbat.
    I love my congregation and feel so blessed.

      @@Grafted,
      This was a really well-thought-out video! I really appreciated the analogy you made between transcultural and transgender, because it really helped my idea of how a commonplace Jew would interpret a gentile imitating them. This livestream was goodly linked to your other video: "Why Grafted?", which had similar ideas construed.
      I used to be of the mindsets that: (1) Gentile = pagan, and since Jesus is God, and came to the earth as a devout Jew, I didn't want to be a "gentile Christian". And (2): since most of the disciples considered themselves "Christians" and were jewish, messianic Judaism is the "right Christianity".
      I feel that through this video, I gained these perspectives: (1) Jesus came as Jewish, because it was understood during the first century that Adonai was above other Gods, and was the "King of the Jews". And (2): being a gentile simply means that your roots are distant from Israel, not that you are pagan. I now understand that it is perfectly acceptable to remain a non-denominational Christian, and a gentile, that loves Jesus.
      Sidenote: I know- my first name is Jewish! It's cool how God uses names on different people than we'd expect. Also: Just Abby, not Abigail. 🙃

  • @serenityimagesstudio

    I strongly disagree with the idea that a Christian feeling led to adopt some Jewish customs is somehow "stealing" Jewish identity. As if anyone can steal someone's identity in that way or "steal" a culture. It's this whole notion of "cultural appropriation" and it's compete nonsense. Societies have always learned from, borrowed from, and influenced each other. And that's a good thing. It's when we insist that people have to stay in the little cultural box that they were born in that societies can no longer understand each other and become aggressive toward anyone "outside". No one is "rejecting who God made them to be" by adopting customs that they enjoy or that bring them closer to God.

    And how did "Miriam" end up becoming the Greek and Latin "Maria"? Same phenomenon : Greeks and later Romans found Hebrew names foreign and difficult to pronounce so they made them sound as Greek or Latin as possible - this happens in all languages!

    Wait a minute! I’m not Jewish but I wear a tallit when I pray. I love it. It seems to help me focus my thoughts and feelings and shuts out distractions. Now I’m talking about at home but not in any church. I’m not trying to be Jewish I just realize I can focus better when I’m wearing the tallit. I’m not trying to steal the Jewish identity. I’m not pretending to be Jewish. I don’t consider wearing a tallit any different than learning Hebrew. If we learn Hebrew or Aramaic does that mean we are trying to steal the Jewish identity? No, it is all about learning and understanding and being in touch with how things were back then and how they are now. So then my next question is, are you talking specifically about wearing the Tzizit on the tallit or are you saying we shouldn’t wear the tallit at well? And does that apply in public or does that apply in private as well?

    Here is something that you might find interesting. My biological father was Sicilian. My adoptive father was English. My mother is a Hinze 57. So, I am biologically half Sicilian and half of a dozen other things. I have a great love for 2 things in my life. Writing and the English language in particular and cooking. I have a peculiar attraction to Italian food even though I never knew my real father or his family. It is like it is in my blood, pun intended. Sometimes, I don't feel like I belong anywhere. However, I know that Jesus has made me who I am for a reason and that I belong in the family of God and He has given me these gifts to help bring people like me (a mish mash of a lot of things that just does not seem to fit in anywhere) into the glorious revelation of who Jesus Christ is. Don't we see from Jesus' encounter with Zacheus, (a Jewish tax collector), that the problem was not so much in the vocation, but the fact that he was padding his own pocket by collecting extra from his fellow Jews. Look carefully at that account in the gospels. In his repentence, Zacheus promised to repay over and above what he had stolen..and Jesus gave great praise for that. Salvation was bestowed. In the case of Matthew, he was called to be an apostle, so left off being a tax collector.

    I still don’t see why wanting to follow the instructions of God is trying to steal the Jewish identity? I think as we are grafted and adopted into the church that Stephen said started at Mt Sinai we are all to follow the perfect instructions of God and follow Jesus example? This does not necessitate replacement theology but rather recognizing we are the ‘adopted child’ not the natural born. Once I realized ‘law’ really meant instructions I whole heartedly want to follow his wonderful ways but you are saying no? Also I think once we are His we are not longer gentiles. Paul seems to be telling us in Romans Galatians and Ephesians that we are not to be like ‘them’? I really want to understand this. I love you guys and hope you can help me to understand in a way i can see. Thank you

      You are right. 2 Timothy 3:16-17

    • @Grafted
      @Grafted  Год назад

      Yes, Torah means "instruction" but even within the Torah, there are instructions given to different people - Levites, the High Priest, women, and the outsider in their midst (aka Gentiles) - to name a few. Just because they have different instructions doesn't mean they are any less part of GOD's family or better or worse than anyone else. This idea remains in the New Covenant. Gentiles (and Jewish people) are to turn away from sin toward GOD when believing in Yeshua. The passage you mentioned from Galatians 3 where Paul says there is neither Jew nor Greek is talking about status. He also says there are neither male nor female in the same verse. I think we can all agree that believes in Yeshua are still distinctly male and female. The same applies with Jew and Gentile. When we believe in Yeshua, we are all of equal status but we have distinctions and GOD desires us to worship Him as those distinct people. If the goal were for everyone to be Jewish, the outcome of the Jerusalem Council in Acts 15 would have been very different! There's a lot to this topic but hopefully this helps clarify a little bit!

    • @t.scottmajor1316
      @t.scottmajor1316 Год назад

      @@Grafted If the goal after the Acts 15 council was to set forth different commands for Jews and Gentiles within the communities of believers then I find the apostolic letters from Paul, Peter, James, Revelation, 1-3 John etc. to be quite inadequate in helping me understand those things. Can you tell me where else I can go to find a complete list of distinctive commands for Jewish believers and a distinct list of commands for Gentile believers?

    • @wendyshine8548
      @wendyshine8548 Год назад +1

      Do you mind if i continue this? I don’t mean to be obstinate but rather I would really like to clarify in my mind. I understood at the acts 15 council gentiles were given 4 torah commands to keep (which goes against what I was taught about not needing to obey the laws) and then they said Moses is taught everywhere. I thot this meant that they were to start with these 4 laws and then as they learned more they could apply the rest in order to walk in Holiness and be alight to the world. We decided, because so many ppl disagreed to basically do our own thing and starting with keeping the 10 words or instructions we would also do what Jesus did as He was our example. So we eat what God has put aside for us to eat (thinking He set aside this as food even with Noah before the Jews?) and keeping the instructions that applied to us as a woman and man that could be done without the temple or all that. The thing is since we started doing this keeping sabbath etc two things have happened one is that my husband and I have changed and our relationship and time of study has been so very blessed , the second is we have experienced ‘very’ light persecution (for lack of better word). We have been accused of becoming Jewish and legalistic. At the same time more and more friends are coming to our bible studies and of course this is one the reasons I need to understand. I am thinking the reason the country is lawless is because the church has become lawless. Why are we so resistant to keeping laws that both the old and new testaments tell us are not to hard to keep? One day I will have to ask our pastor but now asking you is a safer way to go. You seem kind and willing.

    I have participated in some Jewish celebrations... but only with Jews... not creating my own "jewishness type worship". I remember as a child having grown up in the Catholic faith remembering "Easter time" services be taught from the pulpit that the Jews killed Jesus.
    Now... The Jews did not kill Jesus. If people would read the Bible... they would realize that Jesus took his own life.
    14 I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.
    15 As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.
    16 And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.
    17 Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.
    18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.

    Can I ask you, if the commandments were given to the Jewish people at Mt Sini, how did they go from the 613 commandments to the 10 commandments?

    • @kedb621
      @kedb621 Год назад +1

      The 613 come from all the commands given in the Torah. Over half of them are only for the priests and temple practices. Those other 603 tell you how to carry out the 10

    The tassles have always been a commandment to Israel (and those Grafted in) from my point of view. I never thought of it as replacement theology. It is a new theory and I need to consider it. I don't want to disobey a commandment if it is done for the same reason the cancel culture says we cannot eat pineapples on pizza because they are Hawaiian and pizza is Italian. Or that I can't dress up as a Native American. I as a woman like to wear a headwrap much like Jewish women. Am I now considered appropriating the Jewish culture? Things I think needs to be considered as well.

    But isn't it interesting that Paul was teaching the Gentiles the Gospel that Christ gave to him. And what was that Gospel that he was teaching them?
    7 But contrariwise, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter;
    So Peter, who was teaching the Jews... taught the law of circumcision. But Paul was the teaching the Gospel of uncircumcision to the Gentiles. And what happened??? He came back to Galatia and found that these Gentiles were being circumcised. And he told them they were NOT to be circumcised. And what did Paul say to them???
    6 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:
    7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.
    8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
    9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.
    Interesting that it was the Jewish members of the Church who wanted the new Gentile members of the church to be circumcised. And they were having them do it as adults. But it was not required of them. Why? That was a covenant between God and Abraham... and his children like sands upon the sea or stars in Heaven... which had nothing to do with the Gentiles.

      Dr. Tom is usually using the Tree of Life Version - a Messianic Jewish translation of the Bible.

    The New Testament is written in Greek manuscript so meaning the Name of Jesus is "lesous" and not Yeshua in Hebrew name.

    I’m a Mexican Pentecostal and I have a sephardic surname. I’m not saying that I have the claim to be Jew, but I’ve always wonder why Jewishness is based on the mother if all of the founders are males? As well as a couple important women, Rahab and Ruth, are gentiles.

    Now gentiles and Jews we all belong to Christ. The messianic Jews knows that. And so we do Christians that means fallow commandments rules and gods precepts. Like no mediums no witch craft no talking to spirits no going to the cemetery to often remember your ancestors the first commandments said love your God with all your mind soul and heart.lord Jesus Christ said do the things of my father we go to Heavenly Father in Jesus name.

    I'd submit that Jacob wasn't Jewish because the Jews are the descendants of Judah, Jacob's son. Similarly Noah wasn't semitic because Shem was Noah''s son.

      While the term "Jew" does come from the name of Judah, all of Jacob's son's descendants make up the Jewish people - they become the twelve tribes of Israel.

      @RL-vv7or Год назад +4

      @@Grafted I disagree. The other tribes were called Israelites. Modern people call them Jews. The people from other tribes were called by their tribal names. Ten of the twelve tribes were carried away in captivity, leaving only Judah and Benjamin along with representatives from the other tribes who became known as Jews because lost their identity after 70 AD.
      The Apostle Paul knew who he was. He said he was from Benjamin. Did he ever call himself a Jew? The prophetess Anna knew what tribe she belonged to- Asher. Why doesn't scripture call her a Jew? Because she wasn't.
