I loved Durin was honest about it all. He didn't make it about something else. We too often make it about it something else. Get made about the trash or not doing the dishes or so many other things. It is so important that Durin said it hurt him that his friend wasn't there for the important things in his life. You're not going to solve the problem if you don't say what is really wrong.
Dwarven honesty is the best. I loved the dynamic, loved Durin. I do hope we get to see way more of Disa, she's awesome! ...That being said, *thank you* for bringing the gorgeous Dwarf-woman-beard styling that Amazon so unwisely missed! 😂😌✨ Brilliant idea!
Hahahahaha! Georgia! SO VERY Clever to use your OWN hair to portray a beard! LOVE the noises that you use to communicate express...discontent...at the whole "Congratulations!" approach! SO animated you are! Vocally as well! SO expressive! (I'll corrupt you into acting yet! = ) Truth be told, I have an...epic-ally...long list of people who ONLY connect with me when they find a use for me. When they need something. It ceased to surprise me long ago, and I don't waste time getting angry about it. Generally...I simply help them as quickly as possible just so I can get rid of them as soon as possible..
This was my favorite part of the first 2 episodes I've seen. Durin was believable as a character, and his issue with feeling slighted was relatable, but also Elrond's obliviousness to what he'd done wrong was equally relatable. It's all too common in relationships that one is hurt and non-communicative while the other is blissfully unaware there's even an issue until they're met with a confusing, inexplicable mix of aggressive and combative behavior. This scene highlights the differences of these two races and the unintended friction that came simply from their different perspectives on time. It was really enjoyable to see how well Elrond handled understanding how he offended his friend and the willingness of the two to bridge the gap between them. Elrond didn't get defensive or make excuses. He asked his friend what he'd done wrong. He listened. He apologized. He tried to make amends while being respectful of his friend's wishes. He was patient and kind, and he was generous with compliments, congratulations, and praise. This could have gone a very different way if Elrond had been to proud to admit that at least from a dwarf's perspective, he had not been a very good friend over the last 20 years.
Maybe Elrond feels unwanted too, which he cleverly disguises with his diplomacy and with a pretext to visit which wouldn’t reveal his needs. Theirs looks like a very deep bond, so perhaps it is the most important relationship for Elrond and now that Durin is married, he feels like there’s no place for him anymore. Tolkien wrote elves as kind of asexual, but very committed creatures. So maybe Elrond just stayed away out of feeling inadequate and isn’t blissfully unaware at all.
I watched this with my friends and we were all very empathetic towards Durin and annoyed with Elrond. Sure, we all have blind spots and with a lifespan that borders eternal, the elves are going to have some different thoughts about the milestones we all take for granted. What was galling though, was Elrond not dropping his veil of diplomacy and honestly relating with his friend. Durin was being very open and vulnerable while being very hurt, and it seemed like Elrond was still trying to work an angle. I would've loved to see a real heartfelt mea culpa from Elrond, but maybe elves just don't do that.
I get what you’re saying, Elrond was wrong in many senses. However, while he may not have been as open as he could have been, he has a very different personality (and culture) than Durin. Where Durin is blunt and passionate, Elrond is very respectful and kindly, they compliment each other as friends well. I think Elrond intended to be soothing and not adding wood to the fire, so to speak.
@@baileywhittington1695 Great point! Certainly I am here for world building through genuine cultural differences. Not only that, there certainly could be very substantial generational differences when you're dealing with age gaps that could be in the hundreds of years (TBH not sure how old either of them are at this point). Personally, if I am trying to honestly relate to someone, and I get the sense that I am being "managed," opposed to heard, forget adding wood to the fire it's like dumping on gasoline.
I think this is more about writing choices, this series sometimes has really awkward dialogues and choice of wording. "Congratulations" was definitely one of these. Also when later on Elrond says to Durin sg like "I lied to you, I didn't go to Khazad-dûm for friendship but for ambition" - ouch this would be the worst way to start this conversation and Elrond is really intelligent so I feel this choice of wording is not really consistent with his character. Still, Elrond and Durin's friendship is the best part of this show imo!!! ❤️
Elrond must find it extremely difficult to drop his veil of diplomacy because we are told he is an orphan. He feels deeply unwanted by everyone, I think. So he tries to please, which isn’t helping with his feeling unwanted, just spirals down into it more and more. You can also see that he feels rejected when Durin talks about his wedding. I sense Elrond is one of those folks to whom their friends are the most important relationship - when these friends get married it feels like there’s no place anymore for the friendship. I think that’s why he stayed away for so long, too.
I have not seen the entire episode in full context, but here's my $0.02: IMO, Durin was completely in the right. Yes, 20 years is a very short time for an elf, but it is NOT a short time for most of the other races of Middle Earth, and if Elrond presumes himself to be a friend of members of those other races, then HE, Elrond, has the responsibility to understand the significance of the passage of time. It was an error born of no malice - to be sure, Durin needs to recognize that - but it was still an error on Elrond's part. Elrond would have been wise to not only apologize to Durin, but also to thank Durin for teaching him a valuable lesson, and then take that valuable lesson to heart. As far as I can tell from literally everything else that I've read in the books and seen in the movies, Elrond DID learn his lesson and apply it well.
Elrond congratulated him first to show him he does value those moments he unfortunately missed. Also could have starded the video a bit earlier to point out Elrond's smart move of pretending to lose so he can soften Durin by feeding his pride instead of souring the reunion further by humiliating him.
Proud people like the dwarves often need flattery or a symbol of their value before they will let their guard down and be willing to lower themselves by accepting an apology. To offer a gift (like an apology) temporarily raises status and accepting temporarily lowers status.
Great video! Talking about Galadriel's deep need to avenge her brother and all the layers of anger, sadness and duty that come with it would be another good topic.
Been watching your videos with my wife on shows we've watched and we are loving these. Enjoyed the arcane videos too. We usually don't keep up with being up to date on shows but we are on these and loving being able to not dodge spoilers and enjoy your videos.
As per your request, here is my 2 cents. These 3 characters were by far the best part of season 1 for me. Loved Elrond and Durin and all their scenes together. But i think i enjoyed Disa the most. A great acting job by Sophia Nomvete, conveying sooo much with her facial expressions.
Your hair looks amazing! Love the breakdown of Durin. I found his character really enjoyable and his conversation was very emotional and raw. Great job😁
4:00 I have to disagree with this take. I think Elrond's choice of congratulating Durin first was the most brilliant piece of dialogue in the whole scene & the most sensitive response Elrond could have replied with. It's easy to stay angry at someone who starts with an apology, because the apology maintains the focus of the conversation on the past transgression which might still be raw & hurting. When speaking with someone in Durin's state here (ie someone who is projecting that tough outer shell and looking for any reason to stay angry to maintain it), starting with an apology could backfire by re-evoking / dwelling on those feelings of hurt, thus lending momentum to the anger & hampering the impact the apology. Instead of starting off with an apology, Elrond chooses to give Durin exactly what he feels he's lost: true friendship. While it might be easy to stay angry at someone while they're apologizing for the past, it is very difficult to stay angry at someone who is expressing genuine happiness for and pride in you. This unexpected kindness momentarily disarms Durin's protective angry shell, and only then Elrond follows it by asking for his forgiveness. It is an incredibly tactful & sensitive response on Elrond's part, and brilliantly played by both actors. TLDR;; disarming anger with sincerity, then apologizing >>> starting off with an apology.
Usually I wait watching these episodes until I've watched the show to avoid spoilers. But this time I had to watch it for Georgia's glorious beard. Dirty trick, Georgia. 😅 But it worked, so hey... Well done, you! Edit: And as always, awesome episode. I always greatly enjoy your videos!

I’m not a therapist and do not have expertise in this area, but I felt like Elrond may have been wise to begin with congratulating Durin. While normally I’m sure it is best to begin with apologies, I think Elrond chose to begin by congratulating Durin because some do not take well to apologies. In elronds mind, Durin may have been prideful and angry, and maybe he wouldn’t accept his apologies. Perhaps he is seeking to begin by warmly expressing what he should have said years ago. Then, when he hopes Durins heart is softened, he genuinely apologizes and like you said, took a step further and apologizes to his family.
If not for how weird mythril was made in this show dwarves were the best written characters in this really bad show(for how much it costed to make). Durin and his wife, their relationship with Elrond are the best bits. Actors that played as dwarves did a great job.
