    I managed to do this job by removing only the first part of the front of the vehicle. Then removing the intercooler. Tight to get in, but dooable with 1/4" drive set and various adapters. I removed the throttle body first, which makes the bolts for the corrugated pipe more accessible. Someone else suggested removing the dipstick tube, which I couldn't do as bolt rusted out. Still managed to do the job. Once I had the ERG valve out, I removed the top cover, slid off the intermediate gear, which allowed manual opening of the valve - to facilitate cleaning it properly. Get a gasket set! Van behaving much better now!

    My van 07 could not go over 2500 revs, I manageged to clean the very clogged EGR. After putting everything back the van struggled to turn on and also showed engine light. I panicked thinking I messed it up. But after persistent tries it turned on, I noticed it has more power and revs work normally. Thanks to your video.

      The Vivaro will only rev to 2500/2700 rpm when stationary, it's a rev limiter. Most modern vehicles have this to protect the engine from being over rev'd when stationary.

    Solved!!!
    I have been suffering with this problem for the last 3 weeks! And after changing egr and many other parts and sensors!
    Turns out the egr cooler has a flap inside it that breaks of and gets sucked backwards into the turbo and jamming it!
    I had no error codes for turbo and all the codes i did have had beed related to egr/dpf!
    Please check your turbo will freewheel and is not seized first before throwing hundred or even thousands on miss-diagnostic! 👍

    Very useful video - thanks! I've just done this job on our 2008 Renault Trafic. You can make the job a bit quicker and easier by just loosening the front panel and rotating it 90 degrees to the driver's side (which saves you having to remove the bonnet catch), and the kinky pipe bottom junction is easy enough to remove and re-attach if you first remove the dipstick tube (1 X 8mm bolt, then it pulls out of the way).

      @@MechitBetter - Adding to the excellent information already provided.
      Use a set of ratchet with cardan connection and appropriate extensions for those hard to reach places. If you add an electric screw driver to assist. Not only this two details make your life easier, but make it way faster. ;-)
      With the right set of tools at hand and working solo. I reach the same stage in about 15 to 20 minutes, without breaking a sweat.
      Example: Replace those dreadful Torx L shape tool, by decent "screw driver handle" Torx. Save a considerable amount of "swearing".
      At the same time the OEM bolts you replaced are Torx, at the center. But with "hex" sides! So you can use both, Torx and sockets, spanners, etc... It's worth understand the "tech" behind something, before senseless bashing out. So quite wasteful move to downgrade them with "normal" hex bolts! Hmm! LOL 😂

    • @MechitBetter

      Thanks for the additional info and tool tips. Much appreciated. Give us some credit though, the plastic trim fixings we replaced were torx centred only with round sides. If they’d had hex sides on them, we’d have had no trouble.

    Thanks for the upload was very helpful, just had to change the alternator, and stripped and cleaned the EGR at the same time. A couple of points that i found gave better access...At 16:20 , remove the 2 bolts as you did, but also undo the 4 that hold that bracket to the EGR, and remove it, the egr will then split in two, you can then remove the LH side of it. Then remove the bolt that holds the oil dipstick tube, and gently twist and pull up, the dipstick tube has an 0 ring at the bottom to seal it into the block, the dipstick tube will pop out, you then have good access to both ends of the kinky pipe. The remaining RH side of the EGR can then be removed as in the video, i found once cracking the bolts they can be undone with a 10mm socket with a UJ and a couple of extensions.

    Firstly, well done to Lucy. What a very capable young lady. Then, thank you for such a comprehensive guide. I wish someone would do the same for my Fiat Ducato x250 3 litre 2008 van/moho as although the EGR is on the top/rear top of the engine, the bolts are an absolute pig to get at. Would need Lucy's hands to get in there, lol. I'm considering putting in a blanking plate at the bottom of the "kinky pipe" effectively removing the EGR from the system. Well done, I see you fixed yours with new injectors. Not sure if you did them yourselves as they can be a nightmare to remove, due to being stuck in with corrosion. Cheers, Chris.

      @MechitBetter  3 года назад

      Ha, thanks. Lucy says thanks too! Most cars and vans these days seem like a pig to access. They’re not designed to be worked on. I guess so people take them to the dealer to fix? Anyway... we didn’t do the injectors ourselves. We took the van to a specialist with some specific kit for the job. As for your EGR blanking, if it doesn’t throw up error codes then do it. I did my old VW Transporter and it made a world of difference 👍

Had to leave it cooler plugged into a garden hose for 30 mins to get a tiny drop of water in cooler. If buying a cooler for older type van, be very careful as there are 2 types - the water pipe on left of cooler can be in 2 positions - pointing to front of van and to rear. Get the correct one :)

    Useful to see the layout, but it is not actually necessary to remove any of the front of the van to do this job! I managed to do it reasonably easily from above with a medium length 1/4" extension for the right hand lower 10mm (socket) bolt (feel it in there), and REMOVED THE 4x 8mm (socket) BOLTS THROUGH THE MOUNTING BRACKET FACE (as well as the two rear ones) to first separate the THROTTLE BODY from the EGR valve, this then allows easy access to the 10mm (socket) 'kinky' pipe top bolts to remove the EGR.

    Hi I had the same problem with my traffic, if I undid the water trap in the bottom of the fuel filter it would be ok for a while. In the end I traced it to a leaking fuel pipe it had a a pinhole leak in it just before the injector pump. I cut the pipe and rejoined it up with a bit of flexible fuel pipe and all is well. Hope this helps. Cheers john

    Mine was running really rough, had a flat spot like it was missing from 1800 - 2400 revs. With a tester saying a injector was down it was occassionly trying to cutout when on motorway in 5th or 6th with red engine light momentarily coming on. After a few weeks this got worse and worse until it was properly cutting out . So I had a injector done that was showing up on tester which incidentally was no4 even though it had been no 3 showing up initially 4 weeks before. This stopped the cutting out, but the missing felt worse and after a couple of weeks it got really bad so plugged in tester and it was showing no 3 injector so went and had it done, but still I could feel the missing/ flat spot. Plugged in tester now it was showing no 2 but instead of having it done, I took it to mates garage where I stripped down parts to the egr and just took the grill off (not lights or front panel stuff) then my mate with a really thin angled ratchet managed to get in and remove throttle body, egr and pipe to manifold. The throttle body looked fine, but the egr was gunked up and the pipe was pretty much blocked, cleaned it all out put it back together and now it is running fine no missing/flatspot at all economy is back up, even though it says no 2 is down. If no 2 is like the other injectors it will probably be ok for weeks, so im going to drive it as long as I can and then get the remaining 2 done at the same time. So in conclusion I think Kierans missus has been unlucky and its one of the injectors that havent been done thats causing the cutting out, and also if you are doing egr with the right tools you can get in there just taking off front grill bumpers 5 bolts. Also the 1.9 can have egr blocked off not this 2.0 model, spoke to a mapper guy who reckons it can be turned down in software though. Apart from the injector issue these are good vans for the money half the price of VW's which can have the same egr or maf general issues.

    • @MechitBetter
      @MechitBetter  5 лет назад +1

      Sounds like you had the same issue. Taking off and cleaning this EGR made no difference to the running. It ended up being one of the injectors that was faulty. We’d already had two replaced but a third must have gone. Just waiting for the fourth one to go to complete the set. Currently, the van is running well on its 3 new injectors. Taking the front end off was a bit involved for sure. I had heard that it’s possible without stripping the van down so much, but I guess I didn’t have the right tools because I couldn’t seem to do it. It was much easier with the front off with my big hands haha 👍

    • @weth0279
      @weth0279 Год назад

      Hi sounds like my issue all 4 new injectors and crank sensor got it running better, but i have a flat spot at 2200 RPM and some times cuts out for a second on hill if at full throttle. Changed cam sensor no change to the flat spot, changed Mass airflow sensor as this can tell the ecu that the egr is not working due to the air flow not registering and egr not meeting the conditions. changed the glow plugs. next step clean fuel filter and book in to get the EGR deleted, its not much more in cost and will take away the EGR side of running problems. mines a M9R 780 so just a software delete to force shut the EGR and with a re-tune comes in at £200. will update after delete good luck guys

      It’s been a real head scratcher to try and find the fault, nothing comes up on a diagnostic test but I’ve been lucky as my mate has the same van so I’ve tried almost all the sensors thinking it must be one of them but still no luck. Like I said I had all the problems you had initially with the van feeling like it was misfiring almost and the stop and engine light coming on and sluggish especially uphill.
      It’s much better now but still not right and the misfire only happens now and again but still sluggish, I’ve checked everything and I’m convinced it has to be the other 2 injectors, just costly if it doesn’t cure the problem. If I do replace the other 2 I’ll let you know how I get on 👍.

    • @MechitBetter

      Yes agreed. An expensive thing to change if it’s not the issue. Sounds like you’ve covered all the other bases if you’ve swapped the sensors for known working ones. We’ve spent ages looking in to the Trafic/Vivaro problems. This van still doesn’t seem 100% to me. Doing research suggests it could be more or less anything from EGR to broken wiring harnesses to any number of faulty sensors. I hate to say it, but I think these dci models are just bad vans so unfortunately I can’t really point you in any particular direction other than a specialist with the relevant diagnosis software. It might save you a lot of time and hassle to have it looked it properly 🤷🏼‍♂️

    • @MechitBetter

      We came to a similar conclusion with this one. Loads of owners reporting similar problems and nobody with a definite solution. People mostly just throw money at the problem and hope for the best as far as I can tell. Having said that, there are some common faults. The turbo pressure sensor and MAF sensor are known to be rubbish, and they can give these symptoms. Obviously EGR and EGR cooler problems. Vacuum pump problems can cause all kinds of misreadings on various sensors, so check that and as many vacuum pipes as you can find. They collapse internally or leak. The injectors on these are crap. We’ve had three replaced at great cost - which helped but I still don’t think it’s entirely 100%. It’s an ongoing battle 🤷🏼‍♂️

    I have the 2.0 vivaro (same van) I have had all 4 injectors replaced in the last 12 months (2 at a time) both times it has started with a very gentle miss then in the space of 2 weeks gone to being un-drivable, have the injectors tested to see what ohm each one is producing, (I think anything below 1500 is not good, failing that, air-flow metre or, the egr may need replacing. P. S. I hate these vans with a passion but spent too much on mine to get rid of it now! 😔 good luck

      Same here Neil. Lucy has spent too much time and money to get rid of it now. I don’t think she’d have another one, and I certainly wouldn’t buy one after all the hassle with this one. We read the same nightmare stories as you, and then shipped the job out to a specialist with some high powered pneumatic thing designed to get injectors out. He also plugged the van in to the correct diagnostics tool and read the live data (I think) to diagnose which injectors were at fault. Later 2.0 engines have an egr cooler fitted. Just found out to my cost that part of the butterfly valve in the cooler is prone to snapping off and destroying the turbo! The engine light came on along with 'injection fault' on the dash and it threw up a P0299 code. Loads of white smoke and the turbo pipe to the intercooler collapsed when the engine was revved. Got to the egr but not the turbo yet, will let you know what a b.....d that is when i get there. The moral of my story is if you have a van with the later m9r engine and you hear a tinny rattle at the back of the engine, don't ignore it coz it isn't just a heat shield rattling its a bit of metal bouncing off the turbo vanes, if you're luck you might be able to get it out before it destroys the turbo!!!

    Try changing the fuel filter first, then if the problem persists it’s more than likely an injector issue, I had the same problem rev drops to 0 a warning light comes on then it’s back to normal again for ages but with what feels like less power, I had my injectors tested & 2 of them where breaking down under load 👎🏻 expensive repair for me but I would try a fuel filter first before removing the interiors

      Unfortunately not. The vivaro is so hard to diagnose. Everything is computed by unreliable sensors, the injectors are prone to problems, and the wiring loom rubs through against the engine block. We spent months trying to diagnose this one at home.
