We in Hungary have been getting a lot of very bad press over the migration issue in recent years. I think Douglas's comment about how lucky we are to live in Europe and therefore how guilty we feel about that is extremely pertinent to Hungary's situation. We have not been so lucky here and we know it and we still bear the scars. Please, don't ask us to continue paying for the world's problems. We've been doing it for 500 years.

Well done to this young lady Interviewer, who conducted herself impeccably. She actually listened, didn't interrupt and asked valuable questions to Douglas. BBC, Sky News, CNN take note. One man, able and eloquent, being asked to answer questions that should already have been addressed and answered by 650 UK Parliamentarians. Tragic. Decades on and the UK cannot work out a figure for net migration or control who crosses its borders - how can Mr Murray do it on his own ? What responsible parent invites millions of guests to their daughter's birthday party when there are only 10 chairs, 10 table settings and 10 slices of cake ?

Stop kissing his arse, the question was addressed and answered in 2003 under labour and in 2010 by the Conservatives/liberals, the problem was the EU law preventing the UK from desciding who, where from and how many migrants could enter Britain. Not long to wait now, 30th March quotas can begin.
Now 330,000, next year could be 30,000 like Blair's regime wanted, that gives the UK a little more wriggle room for allowing refugees in (opposite to what Qatar,Saudi,UAE,Dubai have done)

Douglas has an in-depth understanding of the migrant situation in Europe, and he speaks so much sense. The nations in western Europe have done a catastrophic job by making their national borders so porous. It is important to first create a conducive environment for the migrant and refugees to integrate into the the social structure of the inviting country, where Europe has failed misra. Hungary and Poland are doing great by standing up to their national ideals and delivering on the promise they made to their citizens.

I think that Douglas Murray is too generous when it comes to the realisation of the problem allowing so many people from the Middle East and North Africa into Europe. Any simple person with foresight could see the problems. The fact that they have manifested should not be a surprise. It simply illustrates the level of poor government dominating agenda of countries like those in Western Europe. Whereas, the Poles and Hungarians etc in the East got it right. Safe in Warsaw, bomb blast in Paris at Christmas. Notice anything different? They are the consequences of policy decisions made in Europe, one with foresight, one ignorant, without.

What seems to astonish Nelufar Hedayat is that EUROPEANS should actually DARE to think that we should have the right to decide who enters our space. At this time, our Political Class (through political and religious incompetence) has admitted into OUR ancestral space, the vile quasi-religion of ISLAM. Ask yourself whether increasing ISLAM is likely to lead to a better, or worse, 'society'? Then there is the problem of ISLAMIC dualism, through which the World is divided between the HOUSE OF ISLAM and the HOUSE OF WAR. To Muslims, only Muslims matter: the KUFAR do not.

    • @wiseonwords

Mark Dyer - Yes, it's remarkable, isn't it? I've lived and worked in several countries in Southeast Asia and the Gulf. In all of the countries where I've worked they have strict controls on who can enter and how long they can stay. They even restrict foreigners from owning property in their nations. It's also notable that none of the Gulf Arab nations have offered their co-religionist migrants refuge in their countries. And yet if any European nation dares to articulate concern about who crosses their borders, they are automatically denounced as being racist or Islamophobic.

Were we to apply that principle in the UK, citing ISLAMIC purity precedent, then many people within the UK would not be able to 'reach' far back into the 20th Century, in order to qualify. Being born in a good country is not a matter of luck. It isn't luck that made them good countries. My grandparents made a conscious decision to move to Australia when it was NOT a rich country. It wasn't the toss of a coin that made the choice for them and they were among those who made Australia rich, in spite of Australia's arid climate and poor, leached soils. They are entitled to have the fruits of their labours go to their own descendants. Modern immigrants are Johnny-Come-Latelies. The first British settlers didn't sail into an established society with infrastructure and institutions in place. They started from scratch.

They worked hard to ensure that their children would be born into a great and functioning society, and he will do the same for his children. Luck has nothing to do with it, it is hard work, community and liberty that makes great countries, i.e. the choices of free individuals and community spirit...
If you are from a poor country, think to yourself "What can I do to make this country great?, What can I do to create a better future for my children?" - If you do this, chances are your children will be born in a country that is in a better state than when you were born, and that will be because of your actions, no because of luck...

7:10 Douglas describes the feeling of "being lucky" to be born in a developed country...and I agree that one's own place of birth is down to personal good fortune if ione is born to a good family in a developed nation, but that is not the same as saying that it is mere good fortune that developed countries have high standards of living through mere chance. Are less developed countries "unlucky"? The high standards of living in devloped Western nations are associated with european values (eg. rules of law, freedom of speech, free elections with representative government, keeping religion as far away from power as possible etc) and these values have been forged through years of turmoil in european history. A modern european should feel no guilt about their ancestors having developed these values, often hard fought for. One might feel lucky that we didn't have to do the fighting ourselves, but no guilt is required. Less developed nations can simply start by following the road map to developed nation statehood which european history teaches. Remove religion from politics, permit free expression and debate, hold free elections, etc... If migrants from less developed nations, who have no awareness of the path to european developed nation statehood, come to Europe and bring their values with them then conflict arises when they try and retain their own values. There is a cultural clash that threatens the developed state by introducing religion into postions of power, by trying to overturn the rule of law etc... this is why diversity of cultural opinions over vital european values can NEVER be a strength.

I just want some elected politcians to start saying this stuff! They would have somuch support from the people of the UK if they did.

You have to remember that we went through the same problems but in an earlier age so we have suffered in the past and came through it without help from other countries. So the people in the third world have now the chance to do in their country what we did in ours and work for a better future. If your young people leave then what chance has their country to improve and become somewhere to stay rather than leave.

Excellent interviewee, as always - Douglas Murray. I am reminded of the occasion when the late Christopher Hitchens who related a story where someone confronting an Islamist refugee about rights of residence made a chilling reply by saying "What makes you think this is your country?" If the world is one, in the ultimate analysis there is no answer, but for the time being we have countries with borders.

This woman should clearly have been the moderator in the main debate. She effortlessly drew out the witty and erudite best of Douglas Murray - and not by any means thru soft-ball questions.
Fakhri in the min (non-) debate just wanted to impose her own highly partisan view, and frequently talked over both contributors and audience comments - thereby absolutely eliminating ANY possibility of achieving the stated aim of consensus or convergence from the various contributions.

Douglas should be a national and international adviser, to bring sanity to a world where tolerance has been pushed into apathy.
This entire migrant issue is asymmetrical, unrealistic and sold in delusion. Our cultures, education, beliefs and standards were never similar.

There is no luck involved about being born in Europe. People actually ran away from Europe because it became too crowded and starvation was common in northern Europe just 100 years ago. Without modern fertilizers we would have to ask Russia for food.

Question of "luck" does not apply to people born in EU by EU parents. Something obvious and normal is not "lucky" Lucky are people who were supposed to be born in other places but they were born in EU. Word " Lucky" leads to word "privileged". So called "privilege" is worked out by my ancestors and I am working for it too. I have to work for it so it is my "payment" not privilege. p.s. good reporter. Asking questions and not disturbing answer.
