    Douglas Murray is, and has always has been, a total bad-ass. I used to admire his early appearances on Question Time, where he consistently (metaphorically) brutalised his opponents. Even then, it was his fearless commitment to the truth that was novel and therefore exciting. I'm a man-of-the left, but my views on some issues, particularly Foreign Policy, have always been more centrists. Mr. Murray was often the only person on the panel prepared to mount the elephant in the room. Whatever your politics, we should all thank him for his tireless and fearless defence of freedom of speech and decency in public discourse.

      You are in my view a real leftist: aware of the philosophical and moral bases of your views yet also aware of their limitations, which are completed by the right, just as much as the philosophical and moral bases of the right have their limitations which are completed by the left. Neither side is entirely correct; it is only through this awareness and appreciation of the strengths and limitations of each side that a real dialogue can even begin.

    • @JohnVLinton

      You are right, Sir.
      However I think the general point stands that folks like Douglas Murray and Sam Harris are a rare breed -- not least as their paychecks are inscribed "Edge Lord" -- whereas the average person who works in some corporate behemoth with a conflict-avoidant HR department writing checks for a different sort of work, may risk a far greater detriment than a mere video being demonetized.
      Free speech, legal in theory, runs up against the social Overton Window very quickly in practice.

    What a delight it is to wake up to a fresh interview with Douglas. Thank you.
    He is entirely right regarding the chilling effect that identity politics has had on free speech. I have taken down years worth of videos and deleted my social media accounts, simply to safeguard my employment. I should add, I have never made a spiteful or politically outrageous upload in my life, yet it is impossible to gage what subject will become verboten in the future and damn me retrospectively. Merely telling the truth has now become a heroic act.

    • @krileayn

      Jim Carrey uploaded a picture of Trump crucifying Jesus. I replied to the tweet with "Carrey is becoming as retarded as the characters he used to play". I was banned from twitter for hateful conduct.
      Free speech is a joke and only applies if you have the right politics.

    • @PrincipledUncertainty
      @PrincipledUncertainty 6 лет назад +7

      I dislike that word myself, but I defend your right to use it. I am also positive that if you had used it in reference to Trump, that you would have been applauded rather than banned. Believe it or not, most of my friends who are still on the left (I bailed some time ago), honestly cannot see anything unethical in what is occurring online. They also have managed the impossible, turning the windmills they tilt at into actual monsters. The far right never had it so good.

    I'm currently reading his book "The Strange Death of Europe". He's a brilliant thinker and I love what he has to say. Unfortunately Identity Politics is alive and prospering in Canada as well and our Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, continually recites his favourite mantra that "diversity is our strength". Anyone who dares to differ is considered a racist, bigot or xenophobe.

    A late, very wise, Professor of German at Bangor University, once said that, "the problem with the Germans is that they are always ready to recognise a political threat from the 'right'; but rarely perceive one from the 'left'. Today, one should surely wonder whether his wisdom applies to the UK, too! Furthermore, the SARAH CHAMPION 'affair' simply demonstrates that the LABOUR party has moved south; and is now the 'socialite' party of the UK; more concerned with being a vote-whore to ISLAM, than protecting Working Class girls and women from Muslim predators. Douglas's point about political time-wasting, could also be applied to Palestine; where - in the 70 years during which Israel has created a sustainable Nation for the Jews - the surrounding Arabs have been sitting around, belly-aching, and buying weapons!

      I’m from the U.K. but live in the States now. It was how the Islam predators of 1500 girls incident was mis handled that caused me to not open up a business in the U.K.
      I would have employed roughly 400 people in good well paid jobs. In the end I just couldn’t do business in a place that would not only allow something like that to occur but basically sweep it under the rug once it was brought to public attention. To sacrifice the lives of 1500 girls on the altar of political correctness is shameful and evil in its own right. I’m deeply saddened by the fact that I will never return to the place of my birth. The church I was baptised in is now an islamic cultural center or some such thing.
      It’s true you can never go home.

    You could see the pain on his face when talking about what happened in Rotheram and other English Towns and city's , the rape and abuse of thousands of English ' white ' girls at the hands on mainly men of Pakistani origin , which was systematically ignored by their communities because those girls were white, was unspeakable , what happened was inexcusable ... unforgivable , and a warning to other societies on what these people collectively are capable of , I don't want Muslims living in my country now ... there is no coming back from that !

    Murray with Sam Harris,, Majiid and Cornell West. Now those will be great to watch. Especially with West who I think has a good heart but interesting to see Douglass pick him apart.
    Also great to see Murray being brought even more into the mainstream, especially in the US. IMO, since the death of Hitch he's the best there is, even above Harris, Peterson, Shapiro, Elder who are thinkers I admire but DM is all round the best.

      I disagree that he is a sleeper. I'm not a "disciple" of his but I think that his presence angers people like Tariq Ramadan, Mehdi Hassan, the SPLC etc more than any of the others can.

    • @alexm3392
      @alexm3392 6 лет назад

      Maajid is willing to debate with people like Douglas, with Sam go on Rogan and put his ideas out there and open himself to criticism. I definately would call him one of the uneducated people given credence by weak leaders. There are plenty of sjw's out there like that, who will only attack others but never debate them.
      Maajid is not like that. I appreciate him for it even if I disagree often

    • @alexm3392
      @alexm3392 6 лет назад

      @Dee Surry yes I watched that when Simon posted it but I don't agree. I even posted on his vid at the time. Majids willingness to have discussions with people the left shuns is important for me. Eg an hour with sargon who is being attacked as "alt right". This is the most important quality for me. If he really was what you say he is it would be far easier for him to dismiss these ppl and attack them like the sjws do. His feuds with the mouthpieces of the far left are also important. For these reasons I still like maajid and disagree with you, Simon and whoever else accuses him of being a sell out or whatever.
      Due to the way the argument is set up, when he attacks extremism in Muslim schools and in the Muslim community, that does so much for ppl who oppose extremism in that community, than if we say it and immediately get banned. When he sues the splc and they have to apologise that is such a beautiful victoru over a disgusting totalitarian organization. I'm glad he exists.

    • @alexm3392
      @alexm3392 6 лет назад

      @Dee Surry I know who aayan is. Dont get why you write that to me as if I had no clue who key thinkers in the debate are.
      Douglas's can see maajid as a colleague and not a friend. Doesn't change anything for me. Doesn't make me see him as a spy.
      One big reason why maajid may continue to claim to be a Muslim is that it really does give him the power to criticise Islam in the mainstream. Everyone knows that being a Muslim or any minority in the west gives you power.
      Or maybe maajid really does still believe in Islam. I don't know. What I do know is that he criticises and fights a lot of the ppl who otherwise get a pass. And when he criticises them it gets broadcast and shown. Me, you, Douglas etc, bevause we aren't Muslims won't ever get that reach and so I'm glad he's there to do it.

    It's not that it is harder to interact with people face to face, it is that it is unproductive. I can start lecturing some stranger on the bus because of an ignorant comment they made, but what will be the fruit of that? We don't know each other, they can potentially get hostile even physical. Nothing gets solved.
    As it pertains to Europe, people are terrified of getting killed or being labeled a bigot of some variety. The Chilling effect has definitely taken place over there.

    What I see about Germany is not a genetic issue, but at least in the 19th and 20th centuries, and perhaps even now, their society suffers from being victims of their own powerful thought which of course can turn into ideology, and it has. I' m thinking of Romantic idealism that swept Germany as being a peaceful example. The point is that's it seems hard for them to find a middle way instead of falling pray of their own thinking.

    Douglas, you're missing the point, old mate! You can't very well argue that - in a moral society - there should be negative repercussions for telling obvious lies, because the people you're debating with believe 'truth' and 'mortality' are themselves 'social constructs'.
    As you've pointed out elsewhere, they're not merely critical of (what's left of) Western society and culture. They want to see the whole project torn town and something entirely different resurrected in its place...

    I like this guy. This is the 4th interview I've watched. But he is fatally flawed when he gets to the end: what do we do about this situation? He seems to think that we only need to forgive and respect. This is obviously not true. Because it is even more obviously that this strategy means you must accept the new idiocy in political correctness!!! So Murray says that we have to forgive that some bloke wore blackface 20 years ago. But what exactly is wrong with blackface? It is a dog whistle, which Murray denigrates. But he doesn't reject it. Not into getting forgiveness for moved goalposts.
    There was nothing wrong with it then, there's nothing wrong with it now. We are not evolving with this stupidity. We are devolving and I'm not joining in. As Murray is.

    why we can't solved this problem
    the reason...... it comes down to
    POLITICS AND RELIGION
    there is a supreme ignorance that effects
    both politicians, and religion, in understanding
    ....so much professionalism....they...forgot something
    integrity.....and self respect
    think appopriately....what's relevant ......telling truth
    it might help.
    MEAN TO SAY......POLITICS AND RELIGION
    IS THE PROBLEM.....THIS IS THEIR WEAPON TO DIVIDE PEOPLE
    What i learn...in the past
    the truth.....they create government to rule a majority
    of the world people......nothing but harm.....abusive......taking advantage
    what ever.....they want to pursue of their own interest.....they dont do
    anything good to humanity....its all about control
    nothing but evil....
    ........my own words

    President Macron isn't a populist, but that's because he isn't popular. Not among the majority of the population for sure.
    Whereas Presdent Trump IS a populist, and very successful one. Because his policies are having a very warm reception from an increasingly less silent majority of the peoples of the USA.
