  • I never thought a Dyson fan would end up in my collection, but it has somehow happened. This is a 2013 Dyson AM01 Air Multiplier 10” fan, one of the original models they released. My interest in these Dyson fans were (and still is) very minimal, mainly because of its so-called "bladeless" design. I'm sure most fellow fan collectors are on the same boat. But now that I have one, I plan on cleaning it up and testing it to see if it will change my opinion on these Dyson fans. Stay tuned for more videos on this fan. Thanks for watching!

    I remember seeing these fans all over Sears and Best Buy on display. I remember always sticking my hand through the hole in the middle as if it was magic. They were noisy but they did look cool.

    • @TheSuperFanMan
      @TheSuperFanMan  2 года назад

      Same! I remember I first saw one in-store back in like 2011 or so, and thought it was one alien of a fan lol. There were even some stores that had 20 of these fans standing in a circle, with a helium balloon continuously zipping through the loop.

    • @TheSuperFanMan
      @TheSuperFanMan  2 года назад

      Yeah that video was quite spectacular. The Dyson engineers must have had a lot of spare time to set up that massive layout of fans for the balloon.

    I have pretty much the exact same opinions of this that you do. It's like an Apple fan; if you have the money and want something that's fancy but inferior to regular fans in pretty much every other way, go for it. For me, I actually like seeing the blades spin, something about that is satisfying. And I like the gusty nature of the air that spinning blades produce, feels more like natural wind. Also I just lost even more interest now that I found out it has a DC motor. It should probably have been battery powered, now that would give it some additional practicality.
    From what I remember when seeing these in the store, they didn't even move that much air even when not clogged up, so I definitely want to see how this one fares when all the dust gets blown out.

    • @TheSuperFanMan
      @TheSuperFanMan  2 года назад

      I can’t agree more with what you said! As much as I appreciate the modern technology Dyson has put into the fan, it just doesn’t seem necessary. I also very much prefer the appearance and the natural-feeling airflow of traditional fans.
      I also didn’t know these at DC motors until recently! The current rating on the sticker says 0.55A, which is even more than most 12” oscillating fans that use AC motors. Not as efficient as I thought for a DC fan.

    A relative of mine owns 2 of these. It's definitely an interesting take on the regular oscillating desk fan, but according to them, it's not a good one. They were on the noisier side when I tested them several years ago, and I remember both of them moving a bit less air than a standard 12" oscillating desk fan on full speed. I'm genuinely interested to see the internal workings of your fan though if you plan of making a teardown video.

    • @TheSuperFanMan
      @TheSuperFanMan  2 года назад +2

      I definitely agree with your opinion. It feels like Dyson made a fan more complicated than it needs to be. I’ll try to do a teardown video when I clean it. I’m not excited to see how much dust is clogged up in the fan lol.

    I still remember thinking the bladeless design was pretty impressive when I saw the commercial, but as soon as I saw how horrendously loud they were at Best Buy, I’ve stayed as far away as I could

    • @TheSuperFanMan
      @TheSuperFanMan  2 года назад +1

      Same! Dyson advertisements are quite persuasive, until you come in store and see the price and what the product is really like. I think the newer Dyson fan models are much quieter than mine, but I don’t think they’re nearly as quiet as some traditional bladed fans when you take airflow into account.

      For sure. I think even the basic model is over $200? Then they also have an air purifier version, a fan+heater version, etc. I’m sure a good $5 90s oscillating fan from a thrift store will do the job better lol.

    This fan looks nice but it doesn't work as well as a normal fan. It doesn't really multiply anything. It just shoots air out of some openings in the housing. Dyson is all about marketing hype.

    • @TheSuperFanMan
      @TheSuperFanMan  5 месяцев назад

      I very much agree! There’s no reason for most people to spend a fortune on a Dyson fan. The “air multiplying” concept isn’t a complete gimmick though. The air rushing out of the ring shaped outlet draws additional air from behind due to Bernoulli’s principle, hence multiplying the airflow. But to be honest, ordinary bladed fans behave similarly too, just not to the same extent as Dyson fans.

    • @joevarga5982
      @joevarga5982 5 месяцев назад

      @@TheSuperFanMan The additional air that it draws through (Bernoulli’s principle) is insignificant. It's not high velocity air. You've fallen for the hype! It's easier to fool someone than to convince them that they've been fooled.

    • @TheSuperFanMan
      @TheSuperFanMan  5 месяцев назад

      Well I wouldn’t say I’m on the Dyson hype train. The effect is insignificant as you said, so it’s also not nonexistent, hence the “not a complete gimmick” remark in my previous reply. Dyson certainly does over-exaggerate for marketing though.

    • @joevarga5982
      @joevarga5982 5 месяцев назад

      @@TheSuperFanMan It's a complete exaggeration. That's called marketing HYPE. The whole company is based on hype. They claimed to have made 10,000 prototypes of their vacuum. They're liars.

      Alright. I do agree that Dyson is all about exaggerating uselessly extravagant features. But whether they claimed to have gone through a million prototypes or not, I couldn’t care less, and I don’t hold a grudge against them.

      Nice! Reliability seems to be pretty good on these Dyson fans. Cleaning is certainly one area of weakness. I wish they made it easy to access the internal parts, but it's unfortunately typical for modern manufacturers to intentionally build products that are not intended for easy repairs.

    This fan would be cool to have in the collection, but I can't imagine spending lots of money on one of these even if I have enough to pay for one. Yesterday was my 10th anniversary of the channel and I made a video to celebrate it.
    The fan that is on top of the list of my most wanted is a vornado 280 cs stand fan (taller version of my vornado 280 ss fan) because I have seen one at a dentist office 10 years ago and I wanted it since then.
    I have tried finding one everywhere where I can go pick up and it felt impossible because it's such a rare modern vornado fan even if I might end up getting one someday.

    • @TheSuperFanMan
      @TheSuperFanMan  2 года назад

      Congrats on your 10 year anniversary! Your video was great. I know that exact feeling when you can’t justify a purchase because it’s not worth the money. The retail price for these Dyson fans are too high for me to comfortably buy brand new.
      Hope you find that Vornado someday! I think that’s a variable-speed model? They’re really neat.

    • @TheSuperFanMan
      @TheSuperFanMan  2 года назад

      I think it's just the nature of the design. The air travels through the base and through narrow channels before it exits through the loop, which would create additional noise.
      Ah I thought so. I love those older variable speed Vornado fans; I wish they still made them with AC motors, even though they have the variable speed EnergySmart DC fans. Hope you find one!

    Why do they call this easy to clean, there is so much dust packed in there. I seen a video of a guy comparing a mainstays stand fan to a Dyson air multiplayer and the recommended the mainstays fan more lol. You should do a video about comparing this and a mainstays table fan, but once you get it cleaned up first.

    • @TheSuperFanMan
      @TheSuperFanMan  2 года назад

      Right?? It baffles me too. It’s equivalent to using like 20 screws to hold the two grille halves together on a traditional fan and saying it’s easy to clean the exterior of it. Pointless if the blades inside are getting dirty and can’t be reached easily.
      I think I’ve seen that video too. He did a good job comparing it, especially the price-to-performance ratio. I definitely plan on making a comparison video, perhaps also discussing aspects outside of just price and performance. It should be interesting lol.

    This fan is absolutely terrible. The fan may look “cool” but it doesn’t blow cool.

    • @TheSuperFanMan
      @TheSuperFanMan  2 года назад +1

      Exactly! Most people don’t care if a fan blows “without chopping up the air.” In fact, I personally prefer the “choppy” air because it feels more natural. As much as I appreciate the engineering that went into these fans, they’re not practical, especially considering the price.
