Great demo. Thanks! I found a better, surefire way to make sure you don't lose that bolt when removing or replacing it: hold an index card or some other piece of paper inside the hole. That way if you drop the bolt, it will slide down the card and land on the ground outside the door. No extra tools necessary.

Hello MTTech. I just used your walkthrough to change both back door handles on my 09 Hyundai Sonata. Wanted to thank you for the help and also mention that when removing the 8mm bolt (At least in the back doors since they don't have manual key locks) you only need to loosen it half way to replace the handles. Once it is loose enough to remove the outer shell, you can install the handles with ease and not have to worry about the 8mm bolt falling to the ground. Just thought that might help you in your future handle replacements! Thanks for the informative video!!!!

The body shop wanted $350 to do the work. All parts and paint cost me less than $100 and it was very satisfying to repair my own vehicle.

Thank you for the video, it took me 5 minutes to replace, used a toilet paper cardboard cylinder to protect against dropping the bolt, worked like a charm. Purchased set of 4 on eBay for $20, assume will need to replace them all. And the black color replacement is very close to dark blue color of car so no paint needed. Thanks!!!

Ah yes, I scratched my head the first time I took the door panel off this car in the video to figure out why the window wouldn't go down when pressing the button on the inside, I couldn't figure out how to remove the window regulator even with all the bolts removed. I just removed the window motor, turned the regulator by hand tested the motor, and put it all back together and surprisingly it worked for awhile, but you could tell the motor was struggling to move the regulator. Then came the day where I took off this door handle and dropped the stupid bolt inside the door. I wanted to retrieve this bolt, and found out the hard way that the tiny little bolt was preventing me from removing the window regulator the first time around. Well, I'm glad you found my video helpful in helping you solve your issue. The lock actuator on my 07 Azera doesn't work, and its on my list of things to fix.

I would have never figured out how the Kia Spectra 2006 handle gets attached to the reinforcement plate I kept trying to get the handle on by clipping in the long end and that was my mistake. NOW I GOT IT in the RIGHT WAY... THANK you for being the only one video out of about 20 I watched, showing the right way to install exterior handle.. KIA SPECTRA has a similar handle design and it is the same way to install as shown in the video!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!
Perfect instructions, I dedided to do to Home Depot and bought an extended magnetic wand. The tip was a little larger than your version. So got it loose , then used the magnetic tip to unscrew rest of the way while slightly pulling . Came right out! Uses the reverse to put it back in. Thanks for the video. (2006 Black Sonata, so perfect color on replacement) I also replaced the interior handle last year same door.

Thanks, was able to do this in 5 minutes. Mainly because the old handle came of completely, so all I had to do was remove the lock thing and replace, put back and screw back and I used a magnetic socket. Saved me at least $50
Wow I did not know it was this easy. It’s the same set up on a 2006-09 Hyundai Azera, my handles have a chrome strip in the middle so painting took a bit longer, very sweet

You're welcome. You can actually use the socket to loosen the bolt, then hold the socket in its place so the bolt doesn't move, use your other hand to pull out the lock cylinder. You can then use one hand to remove and install the new handle. After, put in the lock cylinder with one hand then with your other hand holding the socket, tighten the bolt a bit so it won't fall then tighten it all the way. Its a balancing act, but that'll prevent the bolt from falling.
I just fixed my door handle after watching this video. Thanks. I would like to add that I needed a T30 Torx bit to remove the screw that holds the locking cylinder.
This is a fairly easy job if you take your time. I guess I got lucky because I put a strong magnet inside my socket but the screw stayed in the white plastic like it was captive. I then carefully removed back piece, slid in the new $11 handle (my part came glossy black so no need to paint), carefully put back piece back on with socket over bolt and tightened. Took maybe 15 minutes once I dug out the right tools. Oh yeah, my handle replacement was on a rear door and the dust cap is facing inside the car but it looks exactly like the one on the front door. If you don't want to scratch the paint use a plastic pry tool, Harbor Freight and other places have them cheap. Good luck and thanks MTTech.

+Nicholas J. Rapanotti Yeah, the is a pretty easy part replacement. The hard part was painting the new door handle, and not dropping the little screw/bolt.
Very simple! I wonder: my BF's driver side handle on his Azera appears to have broken off at the base where the gasket is closer to the lock mechanism, as opposed to at the inner latch part as it did in your video. So likely, instead of just the little bit at the end having been removed from the broken handle, the entire plastic arm from the gasket inward is still inside his door. Do you think the inner part of the handle could be removed easily with pliers through this method or does the entire door interior have to be removed in this case?

Clint Blatchford No. Parts come unpainted. The handle comes in a solid black color. it doesn't have the metallic sparkles that would be on some cars that are painted black.

Lmao back again just after 2 months having to fix the door handle. This time the passenger door was ripped off by a coworker. Why don't they just make the little pull piece metal? the flimsy ass plastic breaks off way to easily.
Haha, that's pretty funny. But yeah, this door handle is a poor design. I'm just glad that newer Hyundai's have a better quality handle. Opened some of their show room cars while my car was in for service, and the handles feel much more solid. Good luck with your second repair!
Very good video. I found new handle for $10 from China, made of ABS. Parts stores want $50, and say each one is a different part number! Hyundai wants much more. So I can replace all 3 on friends Hyundai for $30. Good deal!
we found new OEM parts on Amazon for $15 each. just replaced both back handles with the package (ordered Thursday, arrived Sunday on MOthers day) My wife is very happy (Next weekend I will remove them and paint them but at least she can open the doors this week with our 2 small kids)!

Quick question though I have both the matching basecoat and clear from automotive touchup, however I do not have a primer with me. I've read several accounts of where paint coated on plastic with only basecoat and clearcoat tends to develop cracks or peel in a few months. Is this correct? Was hoping for a few pointers. Thanks again.
The door handle that was replaced in this video to this day is still working well with no issues of paint peeling or cracking. You could scuff up the black unpainted door handle so the paint still stick better. But it's your call. Just telling you my own experience and that the door handle I replaced is still fine. In fact, I replaced the rear handle the same way a year ago. Went straight to paint and then clear coat. No issues yet.
thanks for the video. i saw that you also got the clear coat spray, is it necessary that i order both sprays or i can just order the base coat only and it will turn out fine?
Technically speaking, yes. If you only use the base coat paint, the handle will have a "matte" smooth finish. It will be easier for this paint to chip/peel off while driving with road debris hitting the paint and witch changing temperatures. The clear coat is there to not only protect the base coat, but also give the handle a nice smooth glossy finish that matches the rest of the car. You could also leave the handle with its black unpainted look as well if you don't mind it.

My 2008 kia sorento front passenger side handle just broke. So this replace procedure really does look like plug and play. Do your automatic door locks and key turn all work properly now?
This video was great! I had a quick question for you. Does the screw on the inside need to be removed if the old handle is already off and the door doesn't have a lock component? I'm trying to put a new handle on my passenger door so no lock!
Yes, If the old handle is already off, you'll still need to take off the other piece by removing the screw inside the door. The handle needs to slide in, so it needs the extra space to slide and snap into place. Hope this helps.
To get to the inside of the door, you'll have to remove the door panel, and window regulator. As of right now, I don't have a video on this process. However, you're in luck. The window for the same car in this video, won't go down. So I'll have to take apart this door to fix it. I'll record the process and upload it on here. I'll update you once the video is uploaded.
Very helpful video. Suggestion: Put a small piece of masking tape over the screw head. That will make the screw a tight fit in an 8mm socket, so it will hold the screw in the socket as you remove it and put it back in place. No need for the magnetic pickup. Hyundai part is available on Amazon for $11.

You're welcome. You can actually use the socket to loosen the bolt, then hold the socket in its place so the bolt doesn't move, use your other hand to pull out the lock cylinder. You can then use one hand to remove and install the new handle. After, put in the lock cylinder with one hand then with your other hand holding the socket, tighten the bolt a bit so it won't fall then tighten it all the way. Its a balancing act, but that'll prevent the bolt from falling.

I just fixed my door handle after watching this video. Thanks. I would like to add that I needed a T30 Torx bit to remove the screw that holds the locking cylinder.
This is a fairly easy job if you take your time. I guess I got lucky because I put a strong magnet inside my socket but the screw stayed in the white plastic like it was captive. I then carefully removed back piece, slid in the new $11 handle (my part came glossy black so no need to paint), carefully put back piece back on with socket over bolt and tightened. Took maybe 15 minutes once I dug out the right tools. Oh yeah, my handle replacement was on a rear door and the dust cap is facing inside the car but it looks exactly like the one on the front door. If you don't want to scratch the paint use a plastic pry tool, Harbor Freight and other places have them cheap. Good luck and thanks MTTech.

Very simple! I wonder: my BF's driver side handle on his Azera appears to have broken off at the base where the gasket is closer to the lock mechanism, as opposed to at the inner latch part as it did in your video. So likely, instead of just the little bit at the end having been removed from the broken handle, the entire plastic arm from the gasket inward is still inside his door. Do you think the inner part of the handle could be removed easily with pliers through this method or does the entire door interior have to be removed in this case?

Clint Blatchford No. Parts come unpainted. The handle comes in a solid black color. it doesn't have the metallic sparkles that would be on some cars that are painted black.

Lmao back again just after 2 months having to fix the door handle. This time the passenger door was ripped off by a coworker. Why don't they just make the little pull piece metal? the flimsy ass plastic breaks off way to easily.
Haha, that's pretty funny. But yeah, this door handle is a poor design. I'm just glad that newer Hyundai's have a better quality handle. Opened some of their show room cars while my car was in for service, and the handles feel much more solid. Good luck with your second repair!

Very good video. I found new handle for $10 from China, made of ABS. Parts stores want $50, and say each one is a different part number! Hyundai wants much more. So I can replace all 3 on friends Hyundai for $30. Good deal!

Simple, searched for Hyundai door handle, sound several for about $10.
we found new OEM parts on Amazon for $15 each. just replaced both back handles with the package (ordered Thursday, arrived Sunday on MOthers day) My wife is very happy (Next weekend I will remove them and paint them but at least she can open the doors this week with our 2 small kids)!
Bill Miller ,that's exactly what I did. Ordered the part on Amazon on Sunday and got the part on Tuesday, I wanted to get next day delivery but it was $ 22 more . So I got a free trial and it worked out fine. Total was $13. have a great day.
Hello MTTech! Thanks for the great video. I plan to go ahead and replace my door handle with confidence now! Quick question though I have both the matching basecoat and clear from automotive touchup, however I do not have a primer with me. I've read several accounts of where paint coated on plastic with only basecoat and clearcoat tends to develop cracks or peel in a few months. Is this correct? Was hoping for a few pointers. Thanks again.
The door handle that was replaced in this video to this day is still working well with no issues of paint peeling or cracking. You could scuff up the black unpainted door handle so the paint still stick better. But it's your call. Just telling you my own experience and that the door handle I replaced is still fine. In fact, I replaced the rear handle the same way a year ago. Went straight to paint and then clear coat. No issues yet.

thanks for the video. i saw that you also got the clear coat spray, is it necessary that i order both sprays or i can just order the base coat only and it will turn out fine?
Technically speaking, yes. If you only use the base coat paint, the handle will have a "matte" smooth finish. It will be easier for this paint to chip/peel off while driving with road debris hitting the paint and witch changing temperatures. The clear coat is there to not only protect the base coat, but also give the handle a nice smooth glossy finish that matches the rest of the car. You could also leave the handle with its black unpainted look as well if you don't mind it.

My 2008 kia sorento front passenger side handle just broke. So this replace procedure really does look like plug and play. Do your automatic door locks and key turn all work properly now?

This video was great! I had a quick question for you. Does the screw on the inside need to be removed if the old handle is already off and the door doesn't have a lock component? I'm trying to put a new handle on my passenger door so no lock!
Yes, If the old handle is already off, you'll still need to take off the other piece by removing the screw inside the door. The handle needs to slide in, so it needs the extra space to slide and snap into place. Hope this helps.

To get to the inside of the door, you'll have to remove the door panel, and window regulator. As of right now, I don't have a video on this process. However, you're in luck. The window for the same car in this video, won't go down. So I'll have to take apart this door to fix it. I'll record the process and upload it on here. I'll update you once the video is uploaded.

Very helpful video. Suggestion: Put a small piece of masking tape over the screw head. That will make the screw a tight fit in an 8mm socket, so it will hold the screw in the socket as you remove it and put it back in place. No need for the magnetic pickup. Hyundai part is available on Amazon for $11.
