Replace 2007 Hyundai Sonata Front and Rear Exterior Door Handles

- I replaced the driver's rear and the passenger's front door handles. Don't exactly know why, but two handles broke with in a couple weeks of each other. Purchased the replacement handles on e-bay for a lot less than buying at the Hyundai dealer. I didn't paint the handles because they were black and looked ok with my gray Sonata.
Another youtuber just used a thin piece of cardboard folded into a U shape. This was done for the front door, because as you pointed out accessing the rear bolt is far deeper. I found that out when replacing the rear door handle. Even with a magnetic hex driver, I still managed to lose the bolt and had to remove the inner door cover .. a 5 minute job that turned into about 2 hours. I really like the PVC tube idea. Brilliant!
Nice vid i just replaced 2 handles. However that pipe concept is not necessary. You just need to push on this 8mm screw and replace the handle while holding/pushing the screw so it doesnt go down. Wrench socket needs to be ducktaped for safety. Thx.
Great idea. Thanks!
You saved me so much money, I had 3 handles break off my Haundai, drivers side handle is only one that hasn't broke "yet" so I bought one for when it does too.... Lol ... Thank you so much ....
You're welcome. Glad that I was able to help.
How tutorial safe lives. This solved my challenge. Great tip.
Thank you so much
great post took 5 mins to replace handle! I saved my uncle a ton of money hyundai told him they would have to remove door panel to replace lol @ $100.00 labor!!! And i like your piece of PEX pipe hugh time saver!!
It's crazy to think who came up with these evil satanic crazy ass corrupt & greedy fkn rates!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for taking the time to post this great how to video. Well done 👍
Thanks for the compliment. Glad that it was helpful.
Thanks for the great video. I dreaded taking the car in to the shop to fix it. So, I ordered the handle and the replacement went pretty smooth. The PVC pipe was a smart idea.
You're welcome. Glad that it went good for you.
Thanks for video brother! Like the PVC tip!
You're welcome. Glad it was helpful. Hope you have a blessed holiday season. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
Great tutorial! Worked perfect for me, and the tip on the 1/2" PVC pipe was a game-changer. Thanks for posting!
You're welcome. Thanks for the nice comments.
Very professional way to show and explain it. Thanks so much.
You're welcome. Glad it was helpful.
looks pretty easy to do.thanks for the video
Great job on this video. Thank you so much for sharing the pvc tip too.
What tool is that you used for the bolt? The name is on the top of my tongue but I can’t think and where did you get the pipe? What size bolt remover did you use
Thank you so very much, I did it myself because of your vid.
lol gosh these things are breaking left and right!
Very good video. My dad called me tonight and said his handle broke. Very helpful advice on 1/2 inch PVC pipe. Will definitely do that.
Thank you
You're welcome. Glad this was helpful. Appreciate the nice comment.
Thanks for sharing! I was able to duplicate and repair without a mechanic!
Thanks! Great idea with the pipes! Shoulda watched this video first... I dropped the driver side lock bolt in the door. Not worth taking the door apart to find it, so I'm gonna buy a new bolt at the hardware store.
Also, it seems like once one plastic part breaks in this car, all of them do in rapid succession. Cheap plastic, I guess. Both driver side handles, various interior components, and the plastic part that attaches the cable for the door elevator mechanisms for the two rear windows all broke within a month or two of each other.
Yes, the same thing happened to me on the drivers side with both doors.
Thx u so much! I'm ordering right now!😀
You make this look so easy i will give it a try haa i am so nervous doing this but your video here is awesome an i picked the part up for 6 bucks haaa thanks so much.....
You're welcome. Hope that it worked out and you got the new handle on.
@@bestgirlsdad sure did thanks haaa
Very detailed and helpful🎉
Thanks for the nice comment. I appreciate it. Glad it was helpful.
I used a copper pipe too get too the inside screws and attach the new one after losing 2 screws in the door!
Definitely was helpful ‼️
Thanks for the nice comment. Glad it was helpful. Hope you have a blessed day.
My handle broke off in my hand so I can’t open the door. Please help
If you don’t got any pvc pipe laying around like me, I was able to do this by rolling up a piece of paper and taping it to catch the bolt, worked just fine but the pvc woulda definitely been better. Great guide
Thanks. Good idea on the rolling up the paper. You just gave me an idea. I'll bet you could also use the cardboard roll from inside a roll of toilet paper or tin foil. Just cut it long ways and roll it up to the diameter you would need. Hope you have a blessed day.
Great video. Will save me from having to pay mechanic. Thank you.
You're welcome. Hope that you have a nice holiday season.
If I was a mechanic I would have charged you zero and made a metal version that never broke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AMERICA RULES!
I used a cardboard tube and lost the nut
My first try at this, I lost the nut too. I went to a salvage yard and got one off a wrecked Sonata. Hope that you have a blessed holiday season. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Omg! Thank you so much for this video!
You're welcome. Glad it was helpful.
Thanks
You're welcome. I appreciate the nice comment. Hope that you have a blessed day.
I'm going to do this tomorrow
my handle didn't come with the white clippie thing. Will the handle still work? Man, I hope 🙏🏽 so.
did it work
Thank you! I can now confidently order the parts and fix my broken door handles.
You're welcome. Thanks for the nice comment. Glad that my video was helpful. Hope you have a blessed day.
Saved me a lot of time. However I didn't have the correct size PVC pipe so I used a piece of cardstock rolled it up and slid it in. Worked out fine.
Hi Dave. Cardstock...that's a great idea! You got me to thinking. I wonder if you could also use the cardboard tube from a roll of toilet paper? You'd just have to cut it long ways and roll it up to fit in the hole. Hope you have a blessed day.
Cardstock paper is only for the elites!
Nice thinking
I need to do this to my 2007 on the driver side door. The small piece that has to be removed has the car lock on it. Is the removal process still the same?
Hello. I also replaced the handle on the driver side door that had the lock. I wish I could remember back exactly how it worked. But, I know that I didn't have a problem. It loosened up enough for the handle to come off, and then put the new handle on.
Thanks for your help. I’ve got a new handle on the way. In the meantime I just moved the handle from my back door to the driver side so I can at least get in. Same procedure on the driver side despite the lock on the handle.
Glad this was helpful. I did the same thing when the passenger side front door handle broke. It is so annoying not having the handle work. After the second handle broke off, I replaced them all.
I just tried and dropped the screw😬
I was ready to give you all kinds of phrase, except that you dodge a very difficult part: the driver side has a lock not just an open spot there. How do we get around the lock?
I see someone else saying that it’s the same thing, but when I pulled the plug out, I saw the lock mechanism in the way
Good morning. It has been so long since I did this, I can't remember exactly. But, I know that it wasn't an issue. I think the lock mechanism either came right out, or could be moved out of the way. Thanks for the good comment.
thanks, brilliant. my exe's door handle just snapped off.
You're welcome. Thanks for the nice comment. Hope you have a blessed day.
Great Video , THANKS
I'm about to do this as both my rear handles are broken. Is the bolt not ferrous? Could I not just use a magnet in the socket instead of some PVC that I will likely never use again?
Hi Justin. I'm not sure if the bolts are ferrous or not. That is a good question. A couple weeks ago, TW made this comment:
"Nice vid i just replaced 2 handles. However that pipe concept is not necessary. You just need to push on this 8mm screw and replace the handle while holding/pushing the screw so it doesn't go down. Wrench socket needs to be ducktaped for safety. Thx."
This is a good idea. I sure agree with taping the socket to the extension. I lost one socket down in the door as I knocked it off the extension pulling it out.
Also, I read a comment on another video like mine where the person said that you could unscrew the bolt just enough to get the handle free. The bolt actually doesn't need to be fully screwed out, and will stay in place when you take the handle off. I can't confirm this, but sounds logical.
Thanks for watching.
@@bestgirlsdad Wow, I was hoping for a reply but not actually expecting one on a 4 year old video. Thank you very much for the information. I ordered a 4 pack of handles from ebay for 17 bucks. I think I am going to replace all for so all the handles match. I don't feel like painting them.
@@ramrod126 I didn't paint mine either. I have the four black handles. I kinda like the look.
I’m trying to do this myself as a single mom😒😒. I gave my teenage my old car and the handle is missing, but he removed the other pieces of the handle( the one that you said don’t remove.) where can I find those parts and what are they called? Thanks from a single mom with a ungrateful teenager son😒😒🤣
Hi Angela. I'm not sure exactly what parts you mean. Are you missing the two rubber type gaskets, or all the handle pieces? If you could post a picture of what the door looks like now, I can better answer your question. Thx
Thanks for the help! Much appreciated!
You're welcome. I'm glad that this was helpful. Hope you have a blessed day.
I'm going to rebel, I'm going to take the original (broken) handle and make a custom metal hook
that will not fail that will grab that door cable!
Thank you for this! We fixed my son's door handle in less than 5 minutes!!
I totally dropped the bolt and lost it in the door haha
On my first try, I did the same thing and lost the bolt in the door. I went to our local salvage yard and got a replacement bolt off a wrecked Sonata. Thanks for the comment. Hope that you have a blessed day.
I can tell just by the way that plastic shit was designed it was designed to fail repeatedly !
I don't have the gaskets that you said not to lose. Do I need to source them somehow?
Hello. On my car, the gaskets were already on the door. They do not come with a new handle. I mentioned not to lose them because they can fall off, which one of mind did. I would check to see if they are still on the door. If not, and it was me, I probably would put the new handle on without worrying about it just to be able to open the door. They probably are there to help seat the handle and keep the weather from getting in behind the handle. You could check with Hyundai or on e-bay to see if any are available. Hope that this helps.
The PVC pipe is genius. I used a piece of thin cardboard to catch the screw when I changed my car's handle but I was worried about it flexing and losing the screw. This solves that concern.
gooooooooood
What about drivers door?with lock is that harder
Hello. I did replace the driver's side door handle and do not remember having any problems. I might not have pulled the piece with the key insert all the way off. It's been a while since I did this so my memory on the driver's side door is not there. Thanks for watching. It shouldn't be a problem.
Thx!
The PVC for the rear doors worked like a charm
Glad it helped. I wish I could remember the guy whose video I watched where I got the idea...so, I could give him credit. It's sure a lot easier than accidentally losing the bolt down into the door. Before I put the PVC in, I was trying to figure out what size the socket was, and I knocked it off the extension when pulling it out...my door has a socket in it now. I've learned my lesson. When I now have to put a socket deep into something, I tape it to the extension so it can't come off.
Well done. I also got a black handle on eBay and paint with clearcoat on the web. I hung the doorhandle using a piece of thread on a tree branch and spun it around to do the spray painting and the clearcoat. This technique worked like a charm. I had to use plenty of clearcoat to get it close to the clearcoat finish on the car.
Thanks for the painting tip...great idea. I would never have thought of hanging the handle to paint it.
Thanks! Excellent video, no issues replacing handle.... Bought Duplicolor spray paint at O'Reilly's for perfect match. Also used plastic adhesion Promotor and clear coat...
Glad the video was helpful. I left the handles black. I'm not a paint guy. But, I might give it a try on your recommendation for O'Reilly's and the clear coat. Thanks.
Thank you very much for this video, particularly the PVC pipe trick. The whole process took just a few minutes and got me through with no frustration.
Thanks for the nice comment. Glad that it worked out well. Hope you have a blessed day.
What size is the bolt?
I dropped the bolt into the interior of the door. Now I can't get it out, and can't find the right bolt anywhere. Any tips? Thanks in advance.
Hi Justin. So sorry that I didn't see your comment and get back earlier. I found extra bolts at one of our salvage yards here. We have a U-Pull-It. I needed an extra bolt and got one off a junked Sonata.
Mine was not 8mm ! It's a 10mm.
10mm on my 2008 kia sorento
great video but it is not 1/2 ich pvc it is 1 ich or 1 1/2 inch.
Thank you so much. My handle just broke this morning. I thought I would have to take it to get repaired until I watched your video. This is wonderful. Have a great day!
You're welcome. Thank you for the nice comment. So glad that my video helped.
Thanks. My wife painted and clear coated the door handle to match. Since this was the front passenger door, I didn’t need an extension. Just used the driver with an 8mm socket. Used a small magnet between the driver and the socket and the replacement took a couple minutes. The rear doors require an extension for the ratchet. I have an 09 with 234,000 miles and all the handles except for the driver’s have been replaced. This was a helpful refresher video for me.
Thanks for the nice comments. You're lucky to have a wife that can do the painting. I didn't even try. I wound up replacing all of the handles and they kinda looked ok being the same black color. Smart idea using the small magnet. Hope you have a blessed holiday season. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
@@bestgirlsdad thanks and Merry Christmas and happy new year to you!!
Mine was 10 mm!
Yes. Seems like some are 10 mm and some 8 mm. Maybe it is just where the cars were manufactured? Thanks for the comment. Hope you have a blessed day.
I have a 2009 Hyundai Sonata. Both exterior and interior door handles are broke on the drivers side door . I can't open the door. What is the best way to cut out the door panel to unlock the door and replace the handles?
Sorry, but I have no idea how to help. I tried using a coat hanger to open the door, sliding it down the window, but couldn't get it to open. I can get the plastic off from around the interior door handle. There is one screw holding the plastic on. Maybe you could take this off and have some room to get something in the door to pull on the mechanism to unlock it.
@@bestgirlsdad a locksmith finally got it open i took off the inside lock and he took a pair of pliers and pulled the cable attached to the door lock.
Thank you for the clear instruction sir. fixed my car handle in 20mins.
Hi Rizwana. You're welcome. Thanks for the nice comments. Hope you have a wonderful day.
Thank you! 2nd handle to fall off so far. Hopefully the last!
You're welcome. Glad this was helpful. I also had two handles break.
Great job,thanks
Wow. GREAT video. You're a great teacher
Thank you.
using a pipe is good idea. Thank you for shearing this video.
You're welcome. Glad to help. The pipe wasn't my idea. I saw a video where another guy used it. I wanted to give him credit and put a link to his video, but I can't remember where it is.
Thank you for the thorough explanation!
Hi Jah. You're welcome. Glad to to help.
Excelente
Thanks.
Great Video and very precise!
Thank you for your compliment. Hope that you all have a Happy Thanksgiving and blessed holiday season.
PErfect the pvc tube
This is so simple!
Thanks. Glad it was helpful.
Awesome my friend 👍
Thanks
👌🌹
Good job
Thanks.
Awesomeness thank you
I'm going to have to do this. But I'm going to try to rig up something better than what they made to begin with instead of replacing it withthe same cheap, defective piece of plastic shit
Please let me know if you figure out something better.
I was watching a Scotty Kilmer video about plastic parts. At the 2:40 mark, he talks about the cheap plastic door handles.

@@bestgirlsdad it's not pretty. But I took baling wire and wrapped around the trigger on the inside and around the old door handles and just put them back in there. It's very simple to do and it has lasted now for about 3 weeks with no issues. This is one of the stupidest factory defects I've ever seen. We broke off three of them in a very short time and the 2010 Hyundai we got now only has 67,000 miles on it and had 55 when we got it.
does this work on sliding minivan door?
Hi. Happy New Year. I have no experience with doing this on a minivan door. I wish I could tell you something, but I have no idea.
