Dude! You saved me over $300. I had a 2007 Sonota. Dealers are a freaking rip-off... Anyway, 3 hints - 1. Bolt is 8mm, not 5/16. Put heavy grease, like wheel bearing grease, in the socket. The bolt should stay in place. Just in case, I also stuffed a rag down the hole to catch it if it dropped. 2. I used a putty knife to remove the plastic hole plug. It popped right out. 3. My drivers door broke so I had to deal with the lock. But after removing the bolt, just pull the lock assembly straight out, it had a tang that slides into a slot. Thanks again!!!

Thanks for saving me $100! This was very helpful. One thing I found when I did it was that I didn't even have to take the screw out all the way. The little small plastic piece came out, we left the screw in and did everything the same.
First of all, thank you so much! My first door handle for my 2010 sonata fell off over two years ago, shortly after the warranty expired. Just like everyone else the dealership wanted over $300 to fix it including painting it, and another auto repair place offered to do it for $110, not painting it. I bought the part myself and after seeing this video it literally took five minutes to install. I just bought two extra doorhandles on eBay for $9.88 a piece. My wife will be so happy that I can finally open her door again, thank you again.
This is my SECOND time watching this video, this time for the driver side door 😂 I used a little piece of cardboard from freezer food slid underneath the wrench (a notecard would work too, or magnetic sockets) to prevent the bolt from falling into the door

The screw lost problem can be eliminated if you place a business card or similar below the screw before you take it out. Put it in a curved shape and if the screw falls, it can't fall inside the door. Also find a piece of "stiff" rubber-type tubing that "captures" the head of the screw inside it, and force it onto the head after loosening the screw. To do this unscrew the screw about 1-1/2 to 2 rotations with a socket, then remove the socket and force the tubing onto the head. Then unscrew the screw all the way out with the tubing, and the business card (or similar) below it. No more lost screw problems.
I’ve had four handles come off on my 2010 Sonata. The dealership fixed it free each time, but it costs me about 5 hours of my life each time I get the assessment and installation. I grabbed the handle on amazon for $11 shipped, spray painted it, and installed it. All in it took me 25 mins. Your video convinced me I could do it and showed me how. Thanks.

For the back door, which is just a little bit of a further reach, I used a stiff piece of paper as a trough for the bolt if it fell (it did, and just rolled out).

Great video! I have a 2006 Hyundai Sonata and the same thing happened to me. The door was actually unlocked and I grabbed the passenger side door handle when it came off in my hands. After the shock & horror (pants had almost been shat), I calmed down and tracked a replacement handle on the internet. Unfortunately I'm the kind of person who's stupid enough to tear the entire door apart to fix it. fortunately however I bumped into your install video on youtube before I did. this is sooo easy!! I'm a gal and it was a breeze. The first one, I did drop the bolt into the door ( and that was with a magnetized tool). The second one, I slipped a little ziplock bag under the bolt and it also fell....right into the ziplock bag! It worked great.
Great tips! I took apart the door and totally missed that spot. I had to fix the inside handle as well, so the door needed to come apart anyway. Also thanks for the heads up on the bolt. I put two magnets on the shaft of my socket driver and it held onto the bolt really well. So glad I didn't lose it to the bottom because actually reaching into the door below the window is pretty tough.
Great video man. Sorry you dropped the bolt. I've been working on cars and trucks for a while and it sucks when that happens... just a tip that maybe helpful next time... take a strong magnet like an earth magnet and either sit it inside the socket or run the magnet around the socket to better keep that from happening. It will give you a better chance of gripping the bolt. But great video. You saved my some time! Thanks!
Great video! I'm about to replace the 2nd door handle on my 2010. It's one fell off on the rear passenger side January 2015. Now a year later the front driver's side comes off. So glad we can do it ourselves and save money.
Thank you for this video! Honestly it is ridiculous that these door handles fall off so easily. If your handle falls off please call Hyundai's complaint line and report it. Also report it on other websites like carcomplaints and NHTSA. If they get enough complaints they will be forced to recall these handles and reimburse you for replacement or replace them.
My 09 Sonata has had 2 broken door handles. Forget about my 2017 Sonata. White and paint is peeling and it only has 35k miles. Hyundai does not take responsibility for these items as they have to deal with lots of recalls . No more Hyundais for me!!

I have a 2009 and I watched the video and was very helpful! Thx! Mine was a driver side handle, but instead of using a socket wrench I used a 1/4" drill bit w socket adapter and more control on screw. Hope this helps those are looking this vid an may help w reducing the chances of dropping the screw inside the door.
Here is a tip to keep from losing the bolt, pack the socket full of multi-purpose grease or vaseline first. Then stick it on the bolt and unscrew it, the bolt will stick inside the socket enough that it will not fall out.
great video. only thing different I did was on the rear doors, instead of trying to pull the bolt out I used it to push the rear piece out, thereby not risking dropping the bolt in the door. Thanks for sharing.

What's with all the 2010 Hyundai Sonata Door Handles Falling off for no apparent reason? I was opening my driver's side rear door and all of a sudden it fall off. . No door handle should do this for no reason. This should be considered a safety issue and have a recall on it. I am going to make a formal complaint. Very one who has this issue should do the same.
My dealer said there isn't any issue with the door handles. Yet, on the internet you find some many people complaining about the handles falling off for no apparent reason. ...To me it should be a recall because it is a a defect.

But the manufacture should take something like that into consideration when selecting the type of plastic used in the manufacture of the door handle. Then again it's possible the part was outsourced and who ever manufactured it didn't adhere to proper material specs. I will say I was quite shocked when I reached to open the door and the handle came off in my hands. My first thought was "After all these years finally! my super powers are starting to kicked in" :D
!!! Just as a side note, the handles in the rear, the bolt doesn't come all the way out, and it's better that way anyways. Just unscrew it for a while and pop the front trim off. Also you access it in a slightly different place,. But same little black plastic trim circle to pop off.
I have this car and my 3 doorhandles have come off. Only my driver door handle hasn't. The other two I had them paint it and put it on for me and it was expensive as hell. Said screw it for the third one, paid 30 bucks and.. Well thanks for the video. I feel like it should be more difficult to do it, and hell after watching I feel like I maybe could have just fixed it with the one I had. Have a good day.

I literally cannot put in the door handle cap because the part that goes around the bolt is broken off and stuck on it, I could try that socket wrench all day and it just goes around in circles. The handle itself can go on, but I don’t think a cap will go on again, is that a necessary part or just for looks? Plus I lost the socket, but ai can get a new one

the door exterior door handles on the 2010 sonata have two different depths. Does anyone know what the measurements of the handles ?. Also, when replacing the bolt for the door handles, I used a dab of wheel bearing grease to the tip of the screwdriver to keep the bolt from dropping inside the door.
Is there any difference in changing a driver's side door as opposed to the passenger side? Your video is great and it looks so easy, but the butt end of the handle has a lock in it and I'm wondering if that causes any complications?
To make life easier. Once you remove the outside plastic piece DO NOT TAKE OUT THE BOLT. Just slide in the new handle, start to thread the bolt into the back piece and then pop it back in place. Then the bolt can't get lost. Replacing both back handles to about 5 minutes,
This is the best advice here and saved me stress before I attempted this... Unfortunately after I finished tightening the bolt with the new handle, my SOCKET fell off and got stuck in the door lol.
+Darleen Hutchins It does have the hole, just in a different spot. It's on the inside of the door just above the latch. Look for the same type of black plastic cap.
Taking off the interior door panel is fairly easy, just take off a couple of screws and then the panel just 'Pops' off of some snaps that hold it onto the door itself. You then use a magnet at the end of a paint-mixing stick to retrieve the bolt.

Niki 95 it's a socket wrench. the socket comes in various sizes, I think the size was mentioned in the video. if not the socket is usually a set and you will have to try different sizes to fit the bolt.
here is a tip, when putting a screw or bolt in tight space put a piece of paper across the opening of the socket and push the bolt head in, bolt will be secure in the socket
Just get the chrome door handles, they look just as good and you don't have to dissect your car and fuck something up (unless you take it to a pro of course). I have the cheap brand on my 2016 Sonata and it looks awesome and gives it that stylish look

I did what you did. Putty knife for the paint and I put a piece of magnet on the 8mm socket.

The gasket you had left over slips on the door handle to keep it from hitting against the door when releasing it. It acts as padding.

I literally cannot put in the door handle cap because the part that goes around the bolt is broken off and stuck on it, I could try that socket wrench all day and it just goes around in circles. The handle itself can go on, but I don’t think a cap will go on again, is that a necessary part or just for looks? Plus I lost the socket, but ai can get a new one

So, I'm trying to do the same thing, except on the drivers side. I ordered the door handle and there are 2 different small plastic pieces that came with the door handle. Do you know what those are used for?

the door exterior door handles on the 2010 sonata have two different depths. Does anyone know what the measurements of the handles ?. Also, when replacing the bolt for the door handles, I used a dab of wheel bearing grease to the tip of the screwdriver to keep the bolt from dropping inside the door.

Is there any difference in changing a driver's side door as opposed to the passenger side? Your video is great and it looks so easy, but the butt end of the handle has a lock in it and I'm wondering if that causes any complications?

To make life easier. Once you remove the outside plastic piece DO NOT TAKE OUT THE BOLT. Just slide in the new handle, start to thread the bolt into the back piece and then pop it back in place. Then the bolt can't get lost.
Replacing both back handles to about 5 minutes,
This is the best advice here and saved me stress before I attempted this...
Unfortunately after I finished tightening the bolt with the new handle, my SOCKET fell off and got stuck in the door lol.

So the rear doors of a 2010 do not have a flap/entry hole to work from. Any insight? You think the entire rear door panel has to be removed? Thanks!

It does have the hole, just in a different spot. It's on the inside of the door just above the latch. Look for the same type of black plastic cap.
Taking off the interior door panel is fairly easy, just take off a couple of screws and then the panel just 'Pops' off of some snaps that hold it onto the door itself. You then use a magnet at the end of a paint-mixing stick to retrieve the bolt.

Niki 95 it's a socket wrench. the socket comes in various sizes, I think the size was mentioned in the video. if not the socket is usually a set and you will have to try different sizes to fit the bolt.

here is a tip, when putting a screw or bolt in tight space put a piece of paper across the opening of the socket and push the bolt head in, bolt will be secure in the socket

Just get the chrome door handles, they look just as good and you don't have to dissect your car and fuck something up (unless you take it to a pro of course). I have the cheap brand on my 2016 Sonata and it looks awesome and gives it that stylish look
