  • I purchased this Schumacher XC10 Battery Charger to help keep my solar battery charged up in the event it isn't able to be charged enough from the panel. I've done some testing with this charger and was not amused by the results.

I got one of these for my airplane's PC 680 AGM battery over 4 years ago. It's been working fine. Even through the winter when I don't fly, and leave the charger connected to the battery in the maintain mode for several months in extremely cold weather (even though the plane is in a hangar here in western New York state, the temperature often gets well below freezing...sometimes below 0 F inside the unheated hangar! ) The battery is well charged, and (just checked this morning) is right where Odyssey (the battery manufacturer) says it should be maintained. This charger model was tested and approved for aircraft by an aircraft electrical group. This battery is noted for failing in a year or two if not properly charged. I've had the PC 680 going on 6 years now with no problems.

Thanks for your review. I charge my 12v 8ah spare UPS and 5ah lawn mower batteries with this, and it has worked great for over 6 years. The unit gets hot when charging in the 95 degree summer heat in my garage and the case has faded to gray, but still works for me.

your review is informative, but you should change title to reflect that you used it for solar charge application.. I have one of these I use strictly for lead acid (automotive batteries) and have never had an issue.

I’ve had one of these since they first came out with this model, and it still works fine, I usually have it connected to the battery in my truck since I don’t use it much but it’s spent many a cold winter nights out there

I've had good results for a few years. Then yesterday it starting arcing violently inside, big flames. Wouldn't stop until I unplugged it. Pretty scary. Opened it up and several parts on the switcher primary circuit were charred beyond recognition. PTC fried, 8 pin IC fried, and some parts vaporized. My pet peeve with these is they won't charge a totally dead battery. They need to see some battery voltage before they start. Keep a dumb charger handy.

Same here on an O'Reilly's Super Start STD battery that's brand new. I've had it for 3 weeks and I'm finally installing it in an 87 Mustang GT I'm restoring..shoots straight to 16V quickly. It was showing no signs of turning off anytime soon either. I put a Harbor Frieght cheapo Float charger on it and it turned green in less than 5 mins. Really about 2-3 mins. Bat is hovering around 13.2-13.4V now with green light on trickle charger. I too noticed that it didn't matter what I set the charger at, it charged the same...but I only have a STD battery to test. Very worysome with a brand new battery, even though it's an inexpensive level battery, it's still money out of pocket.

I bought a Stanley BC1509 (15A) charger for my month long, cross country trip 2 years ago. Worked great in keeping my 150Ah battery charged. I didn't have solar. Just ran the charger off my Xantrex PROwatt 1000 inverter connected to the car's battery. I only turn it on while driving to prevent it from draining my car's battery. Setup worked great. I didn't see any mpg hit. My 150Ah battery was used to power a ARB frig / freezer.

I love this charger for the price. have used a lot in 3 years. you can spend 30 bucks for just a maintainer. this has been just as good if not beetter than a "trickle" or keeper I have had as well.

I'm searching around for why my charger won't even turn on. I found it in dad's garage when we cleaned it out. It was still in the box and never used. I used it two times on my deep cycle battery and now it won't even turn on. Mine is a xc6. If I can't get it working by the end of the morning I'm just buying a new brand.

Could it have been trying to desulfate the battery?

My second charger just like this one quit working on me. The one I had before was a 6 amp so I upgraded to the 10:00 amp and they both quit working in the middle of charging. I can smell burnt Electronics inside. I'm going to have a hard time giving Shumacher any more of my money.
And this charger may have possibly ruined 2 Deka batteries on my diesel pickup. They are both bad now.
