Free rooftop scratches included?
I recommend using the x3 shark fin and getting rid of the old housing. Then glue it with Sikaflex
I did this mod, because when I bought my car, its original aerial case had a huge crack, that I suspected would let in moisture.
It was back in Feb, 2019. Now, 2 years later, I can tell something about its longevity.
I had the same unit and so - same problem fitting-wise, that it did not really slip well over the oem unit; I had to trim the base too.
After trimming the base, I realized that the cover does not actually fit over the oem unit at all - there is still a crack of space between it and the roof, so I removed the inner antenna-extension, that you screw into the oem thread. It fit well, reception was good, so I went with it.
Next problem was, because of the trimmed base, there wasn't too much space for the adhesive pad to stick onto, also the adhesive was a complete rubbish. I was afraid that a simple automated carwash would brush that thing right off, it was that weak. I opted to use glue, which, in hindsight, was not the best idea, but at least it held the cover on great.
Fast forward to yesterday (funny how RUclips decides to show me this video today), I have retrofitted my E87 with a CIC navigation and did not want one of those cheap ebay GPS antennae, that you stick on your dash or something, I wanted as close to OEM installation as possible, so I needed to fit a new antenna, that has connectors for radio AND gps. Now, I thought my main problem would be taking off the shark fin (in reality, it was taking out and putting back the headliner). I broke the fin off using a moderate amount of force (at least it stood in place after 2 years of carwashes), now the sad part: the fin took the clear coat along with it. My roof has some previous minor hail damage, but still, not a great feeling... Also it turns out it had let some moisture in it anyway, so my main problem with these covers is the sealing aspect - I hope that it cannot lead to rust issues due to constant water ingress.
I plan on re-welding a different roof skin some time this or next year (I know, I know - I have issues apparently), so I put the new antenna in and just slapped that sucker back on it, using glue again.
Next time I will try to make fit some OEM BMW shark fin antennae, instead of this cheap ebay stuff. Hope that works out.
TL;DR: great visual mod that makes your car not to look like an RC model, but hurts repairability and might have water ingress issues (I'd wager 99% if you use the supplied adhesive pad and maybe if you put it on glue)
@radins I'm shocked that people use automated carwashes.🤮
I wanted too scream while you were just scratching the effing roof
I would have tightened the adapter screw more than finger tight.
@Ariel Dominik Pro tip: get a life.
You don't care about scratches do you?😅
Thnxs love it and cheap easy mods I like it that way;)
Thanks man
I think your supposed to take the old plastic surround off your old aerial so that the shark fin fits, your not supposed to be doing any cutting on the shark fin itself to make it fit, LOL! got one of these myself, I`ll make sure I fit it properly without cutting anything.
Who needs instructions😂 any excuse to get the multitool out!👍😂👌
@@drivelife.channel I enjoy watching your vids boss, hope the fin stays on through the winter😊
But how to take off the old plastic surround? I have the same problem with the size of the antenne even if i cut some thing, it doesn't fit... :(
I've got the exact problem here. The shark's fin doesn't sit over the base. Not sure how to remove?
I bought one. It does not fit the e81 model. Despite the additional cut in the bottom, the fin is too narrow at the top to cover the antenna part on the roof. Can you please post the link where you bought yours
The same thing happened to me...
same have u found one that fits?
@@bencunningham460 I did not find. If anyone finds it, please post a link here
@@wojtekm1797 yeah i ordered one but it’s too small altho i might try to trim it to fit around the ariel base i’ll update you if it works n if it doesn’t then rip my refund lol
have you found one? 😅😅 I am trying to find one for my e81
I’m doing this on my 123d right now
I have a BMW 118i E87 and I bought the same antenna but it plays with the sides of the antenna on the roof. It is the same as the one you have. Could you put a link or something on the shark-type antenna you bought? Thank you!
Same here
can you please post link where did you buy it.
There is any gap? i tired to fix in my car i can find gap in front end
I'm guessing you're supposed to remove the existing shark fin and slide it into the new one
George, funny to see your comment here!
Little confused though, you're telling me the original antenna and base you can remove the whole thing?!
I have bought a cheap fin from eBay and I'm in the same pickle of not being able to fit it on. Is this something you'll do on yours?
Does it affect the navigation system?
It actually gets better 😂
Tried it no reception.
It's not square on the car roof lol 😅
FFs you need to tighten the screw first ...lol
Da sollte man sich bei der Montage mehr Mühe geben. Vorn hängt der Kleber raus. Das hält nicht lange.
Did it Last On since then?
Yep :)
DriveLife Good to know!!

Nope, and it still lasted just fine :) even stayed on in a head on accident!
@@drivelife.channel hahaha nice one I just did main today
how did you trim the base?
With a saw on my pocket knife 🤣 not recommended!
Wenn du in der Stadt lebst, ist es in Ordnung, wenn es weit weg von der Stadt ist, ist es totaler Mist, es sei denn, du änderst es, es ist großartig
Crap… just received mine. I hope it fits without needing to cut 🫣
I guess I missed the part where it doesn’t fit properly or I forgot that part 🙄
