    MTD voice disorder is a complex matter. Therefore, I asked one of my dear clients to share her story of overcoming this condition. She shares her journey through MTD voice therapy, her favourite muscle tension dysphonia exercises, and her tips on how to deal with this hyperfunctional voice disorder successfully.
    Even though her process of therapy for muscle tension dysphonia wasn’t a smooth sailing, her story and attitude brings positivity and energy that will hopefully motivate and inspire you too! Enjoy watching the video.

      If you are a singer it’s good to have a voice teacher who is willing to talk with your speech therapist and have you do the exercises in class that you do in therapy

    I've been working with MTD for more than a year, and I agree with everything Katarina and her friend have to say in these two videos. Meditation, self-massage (using Katarina's course), vocal therapy have all been crucial. I find that when I speak with proper technique I'm fine, but when I lapse into old vocal habits I experience discomfort that takes a little time to heal. I find that rest alone does NOT do the trick. As long as my vocal technique is poor, i continue to trigger muscle tension and the resulting discomfort. But with practice, I'm getting more consistent. Super grateful to Katarina and other people who have helped and continue to help me.

      Clint, thank you very much for your lovely comment. I am happy to hear that you are staying on top of your voice. I agree with you that vocal rest will not do the trick. New ways of producing sound will. If you have any questions, let me know. Thanks again for leaving this comment as I find it valuable for other people in similar situation who may be searching for solutions. I really appreciate it.

      I can second everything Clint has said. I’ve dealt with MTD for more than a year and a half, maybe 2, and if I do have poor technique I can take a few days to recoup... it stinks but definitely with the help from Katarina’s videos has been extremely helpful. Unfortunately you’re not alone Clint!

    I was diagnosed with MTD in December of 2019 after a year and a half of new breathiness in my voice. The year and a half was heartbreaking after misdiagnoses with other issues and my lack of singing ability. But my voice teacher told me to go to Anat Keidar in NYC and she has worked wonders with me. Besides fixing my technique and larynx position, I've seen substantial improvement from just one exercise. I'm still working on my battle. The breathiness is mostly gone. My next focus is on engaging my core/ pelvic muscle and starting breathing exercises (I have terrible breath support). These videos are so helpful. I think I might try massaging.

    Hi Katarina. Just wanted to say thanks so much for your videos. I'm a singer and was diagnosed with muscle tension dysphonia by an ENT nearly 2 years ago. It has been stressful and very disheartening at times when my voice has been hoarse for weeks on end. Late last year my voice ended up worse than ever, I think due in part to constant smoke exposure from Australia's bushfires, but I also hadn't found the right things to help me yet. I've since had speech therapy and tried a lot of different approaches. Things have finally started to improve for me this year; I still have a way to go, but I feel positive and don't despair anymore. I really appreciate what you're doing with your videos and enjoy doing the exercises along with you.

    Great information! I was diagnosed with MTD in July after having an almost constant sore throat and vocal fatigue, especially after singing. I’ve been trying to get my insurance to cover the speech therapy so I can begin, but I’m glad I found your videos to get more information in the mean time. It’s been stressful already but this video makes me feel a bit better about the process. Hopefully I can find some relief soon!

    Katarina, thank you sooooo much for the great videos! They are a great help! I am a teacher, a singer and a preacher from Bulgaria and use my voice a lot, so much that I lost it and it couldn’t recover for more than 2 months. I got some time off, visited a doctor, but still no result. With your videos I got hope that my voice will get back to normal again! I'm confused. Isn't MTD just physical tension? Why is it being classified as a disorder?

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  Год назад +1

      Not necessarily. D stands for Dysphonia, which means a voice disorder. You are right that muscle tension exists on a continuum and everyone has physical tension in their bodies all the time. But when this level crosses a certain threshold, it can affect vocal function to the point where people are unable to use their voice for "normal" daily tasks. When physical tension (or anything else) makes people lose their ability to function normally, then we have a problem. I hope that this clears your confusion.
