What Size Wheel for 235 275 & 315 Drag Radials for the Best Performance! Tech Tip Tuesday

  • This topic is really cool to have sat down with Tommy Kirk of MacFab Beadlocks to cover. Everyone has their own theory on what wheel width with what tire to run. We get Tommy's take on it after helping with the fastest small tire and drag radial guys programs for the last couple decades as technology and the sport have evolved. Of course everyone tunes differently, but we hope this brings some valuable insight.
    Whether you are running a 235 drag radial, a 275 radial, or the big boy RVW 315 this can be really helpful and likely bring some ideas and thought processes you may not have thought about before.
    For quick reference:
    235 Radial or 26x8.5 slick: 11" recommended
    275 Radial like the Mickey Thompson pro: 12" wide (13 or 14" wide if running on a perfect track)
    315 Radial (14" wide minimum)
    Of course weight, power, and track conditions can call for some variations within these general rules of thumb!
    Thanks for tuning in, see you guys next time!

      @@Phuong_Nguyen_ right on, 9 through 11 is good. many did use those on 15x8 before they knew better, i did also, they are great on a15x10 if they are p275 60 series. You can use them on a 15x12 for that slight stretch, although racers are putting the race tire 275's on as wide as a 15x14 because it is more stable and consistent with their launch setups , although that is stretched like 'stance' stretched and some of those go up from 60 series ratios like 65 series kind of height wise although every bit as wide in a race tire and equivalent sizes.

    What brand/model wheel is that?

  • @zAvAvAz
    @zAvAvAz 2 года назад +3

    for between a really stiff tire wall or not , i like a 265 or a 275 on an 11" rim. a 285 or 295 on a 12" rim, and a 305 or 315 on a 13" rim These are minimum and under recommended tire sizes normally but there is some leeway to be had. Ideally a street tire that moves would be a p285 or p295 50 on a 15x11 this is a 26.5" tall tire the p295/50r15 . . A p275 tire is considered IDEAL on a 10" or 10.5" wide wheel. Add tire height and sidewall from 50 series to say 60 or 65% and you now have a 29" tall tire so adding in a little wheel width can work well as these guys have shown by what is popular and workable 'in the zone' . haha. cool. Its really smart racing these racers prove science of wheel and tire combination. Thanks youns. A good race p295 65 r15 is great on a 12 or 12.5. i could see it going well with a 13 and 14. However the norm, the recommended wheel is 11 to 11.5. and minimum tire size on a 15x12 wheel ideally. For BFG street radials on a street car daily driver / pizza delivery camaro i would throw four P265-50R15 on a 15X10" wheel at all four corners with modified sculpted fenders.

      That's a good question, seeing as you have less % of sidewall compared to a 15". I'd think that same principle would apply, at a certain point, your shocks will be doing all the work, so you'd better have it set up right.

    • @gearjunkie3412
      @gearjunkie3412 3 года назад

      Depending on sidewall ratio. Less sidewall requires wider wheel

    • @zAvAvAz
      @zAvAvAz 2 года назад

      A 12 is only two tire sizes up from ideal street minimum. I say your 17x12 is right on. I mean either way your side wall is probably not significant loss or gain if low profile , i don't know the height of tire. A drag tire at strip with some sidewall, i say your spot on. And even if way under a 28, 29" tire on street i still say your right on.

    • @Drunken_Hamster
      @Drunken_Hamster 9 месяцев назад

      He literally said it in the video; It's to increase the contact patch. These recommendations are for 15-inch diameter wheels, SLICK tires, and a pure drag-car setup. This is not for street applications with rain-safe radials on 17 or 18-inch diameter rims, unfortunately.

      It’s not rocket science. If you don’t have a 1000+ hp. Chances are you don’t have room for a 11+ inch wheel. So go with what fits. You most likely be better off with using your stock wheels and invest in better suspension.
