  • Old Western Movie starring Robert Mitchum: The Red Pony - A ranch boy is gifted with a colt, grows to love him but the colt escapes, with tragic results.
    The Red Pony (1949)
    Director: Lewis Milestone
    Writers: John Steinbeck
Stars: Myrna Loy, Robert Mitchum, Louis Calhern
    Genre: Drama, Family, Western
    Country: United States
    Language: English
Also Known As: John Steinbeck's The Red Pony
Release Date: 8 March 1949 (USA)
    Duration: 88 min
    Filming Location: Agoura, California, USA
    Storyline:
In the coast range mountains on the western edge of the Salinas Valley is a ranch where Tom, a lad of about ten, longs for a pony. He lives with his mom, who was born there, her dad, a talkative pioneer who misses the old West, Tom's dad Fred Tiflin, who comes from the city and after years on the ranch doesn't feel at home there, and Billy, their trusted hand, a real cowboy. While Fred has to sort out whether he wants to stay a rancher and come to terms with his son being closer to Billy than to himself, Tom gets a pony and learns directly about responsibility and loss. What lessons can each learn, and are tragedy and hard choices all that life offers? Are laughter and joy anywhere?
    Reviews:
"Timeless classic based on the novel by John Steinbeck that the whole family can really enjoy.
Sensitive and enjoyable film about a ranch boy who is gifted with a colt . The young Northern California boy cares his colt , enjoys , plays, until the little horse escapes , then things go wrong.
A family film with emotion , sensibility and good feeling . It manages to accomplish attractive scenes , though slow-moving and dull , at times . Actors are frankly suberb such as Robert Mitchum, Myrna Loy , Shepperd Strudwick , Margaret Hamilton as an angry teacher , the small boy Peter Miles , and special mention for Louis Calhern as the grandfather usually telling stories. It was remade for TV in 1976 directed by Robert Totten with Henry Fonda , Maureen O'Hara , Ben Johnson, Jack Elam.
It contains a really classy musical score by the great composer Aaron Copland . As well as colorful and brilliant cinematography by excellent cameraman Tony Gaudio, in perfect remastering. The motion picture was competenly directed by Lewis Milestone . This one was a vintage filmmaker who shot a lot of films in all kinds of genres with penchant for warlike genre , getting some masterpieces . As Lewis Milestone directed the following ones : " Mutiny on the Bounty" , "Oceans' 11", "Pork Chop Hill" , "Halls of Moctezuma" , "Arch of Triumph" , "The Strange Love of Martha Ivers" , "Of Mice and Men" , "The General died at Dawn", "The Front Page" , "All Quiet on the The Western Front" , "The Garden of Eden" ."-Written by ma-cortes on IMDb.com

The innocence of this boy was the real star of the show. Innocence is a lifestyle that seems to frighten others. It's really good to see more Positive Emotional values.

I like this movie but first time I saw it & saw what happened to horse I was very shocked & cried. I like the actors in this movie Loy & Hudson wonderful! My mom said she saw it in theater as kid with her 2 sisters & they cried also. The movie with Elizabeth Taylor about a horse is a wonderful move as well National Velvet,, with Mickey Rooney.

Totally marvelous and wonderful in every way! Mitchum was just too perfect, the kid was an incredible child actor. Copland's score, is, of course, a masterpiece of the repertoire.

I was 9 when I first saw this. I read the book which had just come out. The inclusion of the Nature scene at the beginning is lovely. Robert Mitchum was always great with kids. Rent Charles Laughton directed Night of the Hunter. Mitchum at his best and non actor kids. This is a beautiful telling of the story, but not a surprise what with Steinbeck writing the screenplay and Aaron Copeland composing the music. Beautiful cinematography. Thanks for posting.

This was filmed in my neighborhood of Agoura Hills before it was a neighborhood. It was filmed at a place called Agoura Ranch, which is now a subdivision of million dollar (but modest - this is CA where homes are 3X as much) homes. However all the vistas are the same of course, and the vegetation is pretty recognizable as well. Very interesting to see what a place looked like before it was developed.

I was very small when My paternal Grandfather passed away. He had raised a family of seven Girls and five Boys. My Dad was the second to last Born and the last born Boy . We lived in the same town so I probably saw Him more times than My child mind could remember. My one lasting Memory of Him was looking up as He towered over Me with His back to the Sun blocking it out, He was 6’4”. Later some years after He He Had passed, My Brother and I were watching Zulu and My Dad walked by on His way to the Kitchen and said “, My Papa was in a battle like that , He said they had them stacked like cordwood”. It was in a place called Abysynia. At My Grandmothers house there hung on the kitchen walls plaque’s made from melted down artillery shells fired in the Ardennes . Belgian metal monger’s had recycled the brass into souvenirs depicting the rejection of the German Surrender offer at Bastogne , a British Commonwealth Soldier looking like a hobo carrying a sack and many more. In the living room hung a few pictures of My Dads older brothers who had been in the Army and Army Air Corps. One was married with kids and ran a huge crane that set deckhouses at Marinship so He was exempted from military service. My Grandfather was a machinist and blacksmith by trade and He and a couple of My Aunts worked there too during WW2. There was a picture of My Uncle Bernard wearing khaki dress shirt and overseas cap with 75th Division Shoulder Patch. One of Him striking a pose kneeling and drinking from His Canteen in late war battle dress. He had been a combat engineer in many close fights , His First at 18 against Veteran SS panzer troops at a little known place named Grandmenil Belgium that would many years later become known as a major turning point of the Battle of the Bulge because of one man who remembered during a time of overwhelming fear and fright how to arm the rocket that He alone fired point blank into the rear of a Panther tank at a place called Wolf Gap Belgium. He was killed instantly by the blast and so disfigured He could not be Identified . In the ensuing confusion of Battle and haste in pressing home attacks on the Germans who then found themselves in a vulnerable position couple with casualties either dead or wounded and removed from the area , the Hero’s Identity was lost to History for Many Years if not for the efforts of a Member of the 75th Infantry Association.
In My Grandfather’s case , his experiences were not detailed and passed down . His later experiences as a recent immigrant would be forgotten if not for the Marin Toxin News. If not for My Uncle Carlo telling Me that “ Papa said He barely escaped with His Life”, We would have gone on envisioning Him as being part of a Rorkes Drift type stand off rather than something more like Custer’s last stand. Adwa , that for most of History has remained a obscure humiliating defeat for the Italian Military is only now being recognized as a major historical turning point. The farsighted Menelick 2 had much in common with Our Own Founding Father’s regarding the Right to Bear Arms that makes Lincoln’s comments about foreign armies not being able to slake their thirst in American Rivers a similar prophesy for Abyssinia now Ethiopia. My Son who is U. S. Army Special Forces “Doc” says the Italian Army and Special Forces are among the finest in the World. I wish I could Have heard My Grandpas stories of His pre American Youth.

Haflingers are small draft horses but much bigger and heavier built than that pony although most are either red with a flaxen mane or various shades of palomino. I think the pony is a Welsh pony . They come in various sizes. He was on the smaller side. Both the kid and the pony were majorly cute.

That's guts. It's the first time I ever saw someone battle some vultures. It probably doesn't help that he went crazy enough to grab a black headed vulture. Those things are said to be more aggressive than other vultures, I looked it up, so it makes since the bird fought back.

That's a great movie, but did you notice, she fixed breakfast for everyone and when the controversy came up about his many stories, not a single one of them eat breakfast. Wow, She went to all that trouble, and not a single eat. A long time to lunch time. And she doesn't even complain.

Poor little pony, he needed someone older, more experienced to look after him, why didn't they put him in the stable part of the barn, to secure him knowing how he loved getting out in the rain

I agree but it's how they wanted the story to go. I'm glad they chose a positive ending.

There are a lot of beautiful films from the late '40's. Check out Boy with Green Hair or Little Women (1949) This was in Technicolor.

Color film was very rare during the 1930's and 1940's because I heard color film was expensive at the time. It wasn't until the 1960's when more movies and TV shows were coming out in color.

Kind of steps on the basics of faith hope love , especially for a kids movie if you asked me. Isn't the reality of the real world enough for youngsters to comprehend
Unfortunately suicide for whatever reasons , sadly , is all to common in our young today

I noticed Beau Bridges name in the credits. He must have been one of the gang of Tom’s friends. I wonder if it is Beau’s first film credit.

Loved the movie but as a hard-hearing person, (I use closed captions a lot) the people who do the CC are real bad. Gavilan is also Gabalan, Gaviland, the word colt became coot, cold cool, and more in some movies they even say a complete sentence that is not what the actors said.
find a group of fast typists who can type over a hundred words a min. (have each typist type for each person talking). Dad in red, Mom in blue with each person being named and in their own color. (Songs are typed as will).
(Bill) "Hi Linda" typed in red
(Linds) "Hello Bill, how are you today" typed in blue
(Leo) "will the two of you get in hear out of the rain"? typed in green.
    get the point?

Cc is typed? I thought it was auto by sound. Sometime they catch, some times they don't. Perhaps a book will help you? *♡~
