  • Free Western Movie starring Johnny Cash and Kirk Douglas: A Gunfight - Two aging gunfighters in need of money come to an agreement to organize an actual showdown between them and sell tickets for it. The townsfolk is more than interested to see the "show".
    A Gunfight (1971)
    Director: Lamont Johnson
    Writer: Harold Jack Bloom
Stars: Kirk Douglas, Johnny Cash, Jane Alexander
    Genre: Western
    Country: USA
    Language: English
Release Date: 25 August 1971 USA
    Also Known As: Gunfight
Filming Locations: Eaves Movie Ranch - 105 Rancho Alegre Road, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA
    Storyline:
"Will Tenneray and Abe Cross are two famous gunfighters who are getting old and need money. Cross tried his luck at gold prospecting but failed. Tenneray works at the local saloon where he capitalizes on his past fame to "sucker fools into buying drinks". The town expects them to become enemies and kill each other in a gunfight but the two aging gunfighters start liking one another. Desperate for money, Tenneray suggests to Cross to put on a show for the townsfolk and fight in an arena for money. The proceeds from the ticket sales would go to the winner of the gunfight. Both men like the idea of a paid show but hate the possibility of one of them killing the other." Written by nufs68 on IMDb.com
    Reviews:
"The quiet loner who emanates raw danger by mere presence has never been portrayed as well until JC takes the role of Abe Cross. Cashs performance alone merits a 'must see' rating for this movie. Kirk Douglas is a natural pick for the role of a flashy, boastful, gunslinger who feels trapped by his retirement as saloon owner and family man in a small town. Will Tenneray(Douglas) yearns for the glory of his past as a feared and known name amongst gunfighters of the West. Abe Cross, his deeds and past are shrouded by a persona that shuns gossip and towns while Will Tennerays' exploits are well known and self-promoted. When Cross rides into town and has a drink in Tennerays' saloon, the tension is immediate and keeps climbing as every townsman whisper their expectations each time the two meet. The inevitable confrontation is a twist on the usual 'meet you at noon duel' that sets this Western apart." Written by higuns on IMDb.com
"Saw this, many, many years ago at the movies and it stayed on my mind. Having gone back to watch it again, more than once in the last couple of years,it seems even better than I remember. I have to confess to being a lifelong fan of Johnny Cash, although never convinced as to his acting skills.Still,he does convince here as Abe Cross and the whole story comes across well. True, not that much action but some Westerns don't need it. I do doubt, however, the information on IMDb that it was filmed in Spain. The Bullring is NOT the Madrid Bullring,as listed,I know that for a fact.Does anyone out there know where it was filmed? Best performance by JC on the screen?I think so. Kirk Douglas is great too and the questions raised about growing old, loneliness, love, money and how an "Outsider" faces up to it all,are explored well. A strange western but a minor masterpiece,a B movie(I love 'em!)in some ways but one that stays with you. A must see for all JC fans,of course. T" Written by room8-143-874877 on IMDb.com

Well the way the ending went was the way it was gonna go ...meaning, they showed the alternate ending if the other had won the gun fight and he just made up an excuse to take off and leave his family anyway. He even put on his gun fighting gun. So as if to say it wouldn't have made any difference weather he died there or not ...And in the first place ,he was the one who was a clown twirling his gun and throwing it up in the air behind his back, sad existence of the man he once was. So you see ,HAPPY ENDING!😁

I grew up in Lafayette Georgia. Here's a story few outside of our town know about. I hoped it would be in Walk the Line, but Johnny said he'd never do another thing for our town, and don't blame him. He was done wrong.
But, when Johnny was strung out on drugs and drinking so bad, he got arrested In Lafayette by Sheriff Ralph Jones. A long long time Sheriff.
When they ask Johnny who he was, he told them Johnny Cash. Jones said, "And I'm Elvis Presley". They didn't believe Johnny because he looked so bad. He told them he loaned his car to a gal and was hunting her, that's why he was walking. He had drugs was one reason he got arrested too. This went on for a few days, him saying he's Johnny, them not believing him. Once he got sobered up, Ralph finally believed him. Ralph talked with Johnny for a day or so, asking him why he was throwing away his life, because it was gonna kill him. Whatever Ralph said worked, because Johnny got his Schiff together after that.
A lil time went by, and the town wanted to build a new Football Stadium. They tried to come up with ways to raise money. Finally, someone asked Ralph if he thought Johnny would help. Ralph spoke with him, and Johnny agreed to do a free concert. The town promised to name it "Cash Stadium". He liked the idea. Well, he played that concert, for free. At the Blue Sky Drive in most likely. And we got enough money for a nice stadium. I went there several times for games. I ran Cross Country and we started there and ended there on meets. It's not used today, a new school was built 20 years ago.
But, what mad Johnny Mad was, they named it Patton Stadium, after the rich big wheels, that didn't pay for the Stadium. They lied to Johnny. He didn't take kindly to that, because he's a man of his word. And he told the town to never ask him for anything again. Ralph fought with the Town over that, and he never forgive them for lying to Johnny after he promised him.
So in the movie, It shows June helping Johnny get straight, and I'm sure she did. He didn't get straight over night, but he got his headstart in the Lafayette Jail.

For years, when ever i got a scratchy throat or a full blown cold, I would mix cayenne pepper powder in a cup of tea. Three times a day until I got better. It works!!

You know, it never occured to me until today that riding a horse all day must leave you with callouses on your arse. Boots coming adrift must be the least of your problems.

When I saw that Johnny Cash and Kirk Douglas were in this movie I came to a realization that western movies are merely a chance for grown men to play cowboys and Indians. They get to dress up like cowboys, carry toy guns, and act all tough.

Creek Douglas Brothers, he died here, right, so why did he bet that he was faster in a gun? I expected that he would succeed and buy the farm with the wife and child.

I believe its more about survival, values, love, respect and the need to respond to what society has backed us into the corner about. These Actors? OK they are acting, but I think they recognised those things. The actors sang about it, portrayed it in their acting roles and did their best. Of course recognition and egotistical pride played the part too.
