Storyline:
Henrickson plays Frank Morgan, a notorious and feared gunfighter that has lived his life on the run. His face and eyes reveal a man that has been very much hardened by that life. We quickly learn, however, that there is still passion inside. Upon receiving a telegram from Linda, an old lover (played by Kay Lenz), requesting his presence, he abandons his woman, mounts his horse and rides to Linda without giving it a second thought. Upon arrival, he learns that Linda is now happily married to the owner of the local general store. The only vestige of her past that remains is a daughter, who Frank is surprised to learn is his. The daughter, of course, does not know about Frank. Linda, not wanting her to know that her father was a notorious gunfighter has given her a fictional father that died a hero's death at the First Battle of Bull Run. Frank quickly learns that Linda's reason for calling for him has nothing to do with romantic feelings. She wants him to protect her husband. It seems that there was an attempted bank robbery in town and the local sheriff and one of the robbers was killed. The other robber is in jail, waiting to be hanged, and Linda's husband has been appointed to the job of temporary sheriff. A cousin of the prisoner is set to be released from prison in a few days, and has made it clear that he will do whatever is necessary to get his kin out of jail. Linda's husband believes that the town will back him up when the showdown comes, but Linda knows better. She knows that he will be killed unless Frank agrees to help him. The story unfolds as Frank comes to terms with the fact that Linda and, for that matter, his newly discovered daughter are forever beyond his reach. He must decide whether to help the man that now has the woman he loves or to simply ride away.
Review:
I first saw this movie on a cable movie channel about six years ago. I only caught the last half of the movie, but I loved it so much I searched the TV listings and would watch it every time it came on. I would set my alarm for 2 or 3 AM, whenever it was scheduled, Finally I was asked what I wanted as a Christmas gift. The only thing I could think of was Gunfighter's Moon! When I received it, I was thrilled. I have watched it so many times that I have lost count. It never gets boring or old. It is a classic. Lance Henriksen was incredible as he portrayed Frank Morgan. I found myself "caring" for Morgan as he went through a range of emotions and conflicts. The only thing I am disappointed with is there was no sequel - I wish Gunfighter's Moon 2 had been considered and released. Maybe it will be. This movie has it all - love, struggles, gunfights, hard men and Lance Henriksen with an incredible smile. Written by VanSulli.

Lance hendrickson is one of the most underrated actors in the industry. He never disappoints, and ads heaps of character to all of his roles. After watching my share of cheesy westerns, this is a breath of fresh air.

This is the second time that I’ve watched this movie… I’m sure that I’ll watch it many more times. It has a really poignant & moving story & Lance Henriksen was an EXCELLENT choice for the lead role, perfectly capturing the multi-faceted character of Frank Morgan.
For once a western with a great storyline. Acting by all first-rate. A very emotional ending will leave all viewers with tears in their eyes! A wonderful music score also. Lance Henriksen and the actress who played his daughter are superb.

Yeah, I have to agree. This is a really good movie. And Lance Henriksen has always been one of my favorite actors. He's been good in anything he does. He was really good in Aliens vs.Predator too!

So much in common with today's fathers. Very powerful story about the bond a father has with the mother of his children and his love for her and his children, also beautiful because it expresses the love his child had for him too.

That actor that played a young brat , I believe was called Shannon is a biggest casting tragedy in history of the film. Everything was going suprisingly wonderful up to the point of his appereance. What a failure, my dear.

The blank, almost quizzical, look that comes over Lance's face just before the final draw is one of my favourite moments of the film..I wonder if Lance came up with it coz I can watch that final gunfight again and again...genius..

Quizzical is a good word. Like the look on Magua’s face in ‘Last of the Mohicans’ as the girl throws herself into the void rather than face a life with him. I thought maybe Frank was bluffing by doing a ‘I’m about to pass out here’ face. The number of little nuances in this, and the opening gunfight, and indeed by Will Shannon, and the psyching out are very credible in a situation where confidence and mind-games could be the difference between life and death. c.f. For a modern day made western it's a good one. Lance is a very good actor, this movie proves it. Kay Lenz has always been superb in her roles. I highly recommend you take a look at this movie it won't disappoint you👍👍👍

I'm a western fan and I've seen so many westerns over the years that I've lost count a long time ago. This one is among my all time favorites! I only wished someone would release a blu-ray of it.
My daughter thought she bought me the disk of this but i got even a rarer gem, my daughter ended up buying me the LASER DISK IN PERFECT CONDITION

Me too. My top westerns were: The Outlaw Josey Wales. Unforgiven. Pale Rider. I put Gunfighter’s moon fourth. Then joint third. Now it has usurped pale rider. (There are similarities. Esp. The ending.) Any idea why the word ‘moon’ is in the title?

A great movie, as much a family drama as a western, with the father /daughter meeting at 48 mins. being very well written / acted/ extremely moving and delicately created within its unusual circumstance.
It was a haunting movie of actions and repercussions, loves and past loves, and making peace with reality. Living the life we were meant to live . Working out His Plan.

I do not know if I have ever seen a Western I enjoyed as much! Exciting!! This guy is pure and simple, the consummate gunfighter! I have never watched a Western with a gunfighter of his style, and class! Note his dress! Note the manner in which he wears his gun belts! Note the pearl handled knife sticking up from the back of his belt! Note his unique hat! Note the manner in which he mounts, and dismounts his horse! Note those steely eyes, and his scarcity of words! Thank you so much for bringing this to us!

You got it all wrong. They both wanted the daughter but many women will not be happy until they screw up everyone around them, then run to another and that usually doesn't last long either.

Every bit as good as the first time. This is what a good western should be. Shawn could have been a better bad guy but aside from that the story was well crafted with superb acting. This is type of movie you want to watch more than once.

Despite having seen thousands of Westerns, I didn't know of this film; and now I have to say it's up there among the very best.
All the acting good, with vivid characterisations. Great direction. Camera work intelligent: I particularly liked the horse movements, especially some in the introductory sequence; and the close-to-the-side shot just before the abduction reminded me vividly of my own sensations when on horseback. Music top-notch, too, by the composer Lee Holdridge.
The style of costume, and the way he wears both his clothing and his weapons, is more authentic than what we see in many films about this period, and is reminiscent of original drawings and paintings from the time, and some early photographs.
The criticism about the seventeen or eighteen shots from two conventional revolver cylinders is valid, but the film as a whole is so good that one is happy to dismiss that little imperfection.
Above all the story is unusual, interesting and plausible, with real and deep emotional springs. An authentic tragedy, in the Greek sense. Men do act stupidly over women, it's true, but one really felt for him when he discovered the real reason for his recall. And so many other really excellent moments and imagery. This writer [who was in this case also the director] knows his trade!

As an author, and an old west historian, this movie was an excellent effort. The tack, guns and holsters used were accurate to the period. Thanks to Thell Reed, no doubt. The gunfights were authentic and well done. Great story.

Yeah, another thing that always gripes me about the authenticity of westerns is that the horses, no matter how hard they're ridden, don't lather up.
A horse's sweat can appear lathery or foamy because it contains latherin, a substance not found in human perspiration. When latherin is combined with friction or mixed with the air, it causes foam. This is why you may see foam on a horse’s mouth, or other parts of their bodies especially around where a saddle or other tack is rubbing and between the butt cheeks.
Most people don't know about this because they've never been around horses much. In real life, a real authentic western would show those horses to be all sweaty with latherin...thats a fact!
I have never seen a movie that actually shows this on a horse. And another thing, while I'm at it, I just watched a western where a bunch of riders were shot with a Gatlin Gun an all the riders died, but not one horse was killed...everybody's dead, but the horses are all milling around. Would like to see some horses taking some squib shots, to simulate the impact of bullet, for more realism... It can be done!
@@catsamazing338 They didn't have grocery stores along the way back then. rabbits and small game were plentiful and more than enough to sustain someone on a long ride. Men like that never had much back then but their bedroll.

@@rcb4554 Yep! You are exactly right! There is always that inexcusable mistake in westerns. Val Kilmer firing 3 shots out of a double barreled shotgun in Tombstone... Kevin Costner firing I don't know how many shots in that long ridiculous gunfight in Open Range... Tom Selleck picking guys off of running horses with a single shot buffalo gun using vernier sights that are designed for stationary long range shooting....and it goes on. There are two movies that come to mind that didn't screw up like this and they are Conagher with Sam Elliot and Apaloosa with Ed Harris. Excellent movies in every regard.

When I watched Blind Justice with Amanda Asante thought that was the ULTIMATE but boy , this one stumbled across , not only does it depict a TRUE AMERICAN GUY with 'balls' it rips at the heart strings This is got to be the ULTIMATE CLASSIC will watch it again tonight and again and again that guy, his charisma 'knocks ya' socks off' what a 'stunner'
