Corelli was at his zenith here. His voice totally obeyed his every command. All his coaching with Lauri-Volpi really paid off handsomely. I heard him sing Romeo a couple months before this date, and his diminuendo on the final 'Parais' in his aria was jaw-dropping!

Totally agree. His Lauri-Volpi concentrated work occurred in the summer of 64. Between 64 and 68, Corelli was at his very, very best as a result. While his Adriana Lecouvreur broadcast in the spring of 69 was a disappointment, with very little diminuendo, dynamics or long phrasing, and a persistently explosive and declamatory style with little in the way of legato or portamento, everything before then, back to just after that magic 64 summer with LV, was unparallelled. This was Corelli's own golden age. It lasted barely four years, but it helped define him, contrary to the bigoted notions of some critics used to Corelli's work from the 1950s, not only as an incredible voice but also an incredible singer, with subtletly, musicality and musicianship to spare.

He was from Ancona, Le Marche on the Adriatic Coast, birthplace of my mother’s family. I have a photo of him as a teenager somewhere in a swimsuit with his high school swim team!

Unfortunately, we can. Barely two years after this performance, in the spring of 1969, Corelli gave an Adriana Lecouvreur broadcast performance that was a pale shadow of his usual self, no diminuendo, no dynamics, no long phrases, no nothing. It remains an abiding mystery to me how his gift could deteriorate so rapidly and suddenly, far faster than what can be accounted for by simple aging. But in this performance of Cielo e Mar, Corelli had it all, probably the best phase of his entire career, 64 to 68. A total wow, unmatched and unequalled.
