The song "Mi Wait" tells an emotional tale inspired by a common life scenario in our villages. It depicts the story of an inland village boy who falls in love with a coastal girl, leading him to leave behind his land and family to be with her. Together, they build a humble home and raise a beautiful daughter, enjoying four blissful years of the simple life.
Every morning, the man sets out to fish while his daughter eagerly awaits his return on the beach, a heartwarming ritual that symbolizes the father-daughter bond. However, tragedy strikes when the wife suddenly grows tired of village life and decides to leave with their daughter despite cries from the daughter.
The song's opening lines, "Taim mun i kam up, mekim mi tintin Lon u," are the painful words of the young daughter for her father, who she misses so dearly. Night after night, she clings to his guitar, her tears staining its strings, while her mother, watches her daughter's heartache.
The woman has moved on and found a partner, taken her daughter and travelled to another province.
The chorus, "aiyo mi wait, mi wait I stap. Wanem taim bai u kam back lon mi," reflects the daughter longing for her father's return, as she once would wait by the sea each morning anticipating the sight of his canoe approaching. These days she sits on a foreign beach reminiscing those childhood days.
Verse 2 “sampla years igo pinis na mi harim story..” it’s from the father. “If emi orait, u Ken kipim mi lo heart blon u. Mi save mi wrong olsem plis forgvim mi”. The father expresses remorse for not being the man his wife desired, if she can forgive him for his downfalls. All he wants now is to see his daughter.
The daughter now grown, finds her way to Port Moresby gets on a PMV and finds her way back to her home. Holding her father's guitar tightly and with bated breath, she approaches their old home. Only to discover her father's final resting place beside it.
She realizes that he had waited for her in death, just as she had waited for him in life.
