It looks good on a medium like Instagram, but it's bad teaching. So much so that I even used it as examples of what not to do when I got roped into teaching an instructor training course a few weeks later. I didn't realize that Instructor Zero was still around. I would have figured his bad instruction techniques would have caught up with his reputation.
Students would bring zero up and how fast he can do a mag change on an AK and other fast things. Told them they are welcome to practice all that but it’s not going to be used in a fight. I’ve never walked down an alley, hallway or jungle going through a whole mag and reloading, I’d be dead.

I find that the hazing style instruction often is a symptom of a instructor who was pushed into the role too quickly and feels insecure about their abilities. They manufacture flashy overly complex scenarios to prove to themselves and their students that they have the skills. The students who can keep up have a blast, but the majority who don't have an awful time and don't learn anything of value. If the instructor is not called on it early in their careers, it just gets worse and worse and can develop into a cult-like mentality. I also find that they tend to be one-trick ponies. They don't have the teaching skills to actually adapt to the needs of their students. And don't have the chops to teach the necessary foundational work.

In the Marines, it would be common to do what’s called (rifle PT) where you’re wearing all your gear and just aiming your rifle or using your rifle as a weight for calisthenics. The point of this is that in CQB you’re often pointing your weapon and holding security on doors/ building etc for very long periods of time. If I had to guess it’s a spillover from that.
I don't think that's the purpose. There would be no training value in a firearms mechanics class. It does sound like nothing more than gut checking hazing.

NGL, when I started pistol shooting (which I keep necessary evil) I did train to keep the weapon up with my one hand up to 7 minutes straight, trying to aim every once a while. Once I reached 7 minutes I stopped doing it. I did this because I noticed clear difference how well I could hold rifle for prolonged times, there is clearly a certain muscle group that develops / must be activated But never have I had my students do this!!

Travis is highly intelligent and he gives too much information to his students. I worked with Travis years ago. When a student did the check your chamber to see if it’s a malfunction or empty then sling your rifle wrist action to throw the mag out move, I had to ask what the hell was that. He learned it in a Travis class. Student was so focused on the getting the mag out that he didn’t realize I placed a dummy in his mag. I can confirm the ND the other commenter posted, 100% true.

Instructor Zero is fun to watch but even he knows you cant teach motor skills, coordination, and visual acuity. He's very entertaining but what is the lesson he teaches???
Is Instructor Zero a good shooter like a USPSA competitor? No. Is he an okay shooter compared to the general population? Yes. Does/did he get a lot of younger guys into guns and was an overall net positive for the gun community? Yes. I wouldn't be too hard on the old guard who are on their way out unless they're themselves attacking the gun community. But like Ben Stoeger said, this is what the people want, bloodsports aka drama.
i think you guys are being overly harsh on Zero, his main clients seem to be very poorly trained soldiers in other countries, him emphasizing Clearing his students of ammo before class and his students shooting themselves or each other if he lets them just shoot and do what they want shows who he normally deals with. 😅 You guys are mocking the 5 minute aiming thing but that lets him observe who hes dealing with and what they seem to know. as he said he can tell alot about someones knowledge on how they hold their guns and how they stand 😅 5 minutes is not alot of time to observe a whole group on their tendencies or what they appear to know. He said he works with language barriers often too 😅 He might not be a world champ and he likes to ramble but if he teaches people who really need training who are going into harms way then its a good thing, As he said, he will decide what they need to be taught after he observes them and wont teach them exactly what they want. Typical hold training, just pointing with a rifle at the target to gain muscle endurance in shoulders. Quite common training by World Shoot Rifle champions

Took a cqb class from no names at a local PD. Pistol shooting was 10 rounds in 10 minutes.....it was a "problem" if we shot faster.....

I've been using dot occlusion to explain to expert hunters how red dots work.. they all come in with the dot mounted at rear like a scope

You two should reconcile, take a Brokeback Mountain trip and sort your differences
