We lost another Good Man.. This is why we cherish every day.

  • Recently I got a call from a friend of mine, Tim. He told me that his dad was a big fan of our channel and watched every video, and that he was battling cancer. Tim thought I might be able to lift up his dad, Ellis by paying him a visit. So that is just what I did, I visited Ellis and his wife as they live in our area down here in Southern Illinois. I had never met Ellis in person before. When I met with him I quickly realized that he was a great family man and a dedicated outdoorsman. Their home walls were plastered with pictures from the ages of this family. Extended family, kids, grandkids and all kinds of life and oudoor adventures adorned their humble living room walls. So I sat down with Ellis for several hours and we got to know each other in that time. Ellis was an avid outdoorsman and a very avid deer hunter. It became apparent to me very quickly just how much Ellis loved his time in the field deer hunting. He recounted many stories of big bucks that he pursued over the years. And Ellis was a dedicated hunter who loved the challenge of the pursuit! Unlike me, as I strive to bring the deer to me, he went after the deer. He relished in every challenge. He worked to find the big bucks. To pattern them and try to figure out how to outsmart them. And he did not have a ton of land to hunt on either. He hunted several properties with just permission, some being only a few acres in size. As a matter of fact, one of his big bucks he harvested was on a 10 acre private property parcel. He wanted to shoe me his deer that he had harvested in the garage so we went for a walk. I cherished the time listening to him recount his field adventures and even though he was ill with cancer I could feel his excitement down in his soul as he recalled the adventures afield. And during the garage tour he gave me a nice big buck deer rack and said that he would love for Sharon to make something beautiful from it and keep it for us to remember him by. He also said that it would give him another Kapperholic video project to look forward to seeing as he enjoyed all of Sharon's DIY and rustic home furnishing projects. They also shared with me some of a recent batch of venison bacon that was a secret recipe, which I thoroughly enjoyed. So after telling Sharon about the visit she began brainstorming and came up with a great idea to memorialize Ellis' beautiful deer rack by making a DIY rustic barnwood lamp out of the deer antlers. She began her magic by resurrecting some old barnwood that we had picked over the years and started in on the deer antler custom lamp project. Well the Good Lord must have had other plans for Ellis as it was only a week or so after our visit that I got the call from Tim that his father had just passed. Not sure what the meaning of all of this was, but my step father also passed on the very same day. Somehow and someway we must have all been connected in ways that are probably too profound for me to comprehend. But I do know this, that it was a pleasure to meet Ellis for the first time and share some time with him. I will never forget our visit and his stories of old as he was bravely facing down an enemy that would soon end his time on God's Green Earth. But I smile as I remember our meeting and I pray for Ellis' soul and for strength for all of his family! It was an honor and a pleasure!

Ellis was one of the good guys. He was my next door neighbor for many years and was always willing to lend a hand anytime it was needed. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. -Scott
