  • With the crossover market exploding these days, car companies are finding more and more ways to satisfy customer demands, from rakish rooflines to ridiculous power, and excellent practicality to obscene luxury.

Here we have a couple of crossovers that are neither the largest nor smallest, the fastest nor most luxurious, and they are all the better for it.
The Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 is the middle, mildly sporty trim of the brand’s small-ish crossover, between the base GLC 300 and the bonkers GLC 63 AMG, while the Audi SQ5 is currently the top performer of the Q5 lineup until rumors of an RSQ5 come true.

I put a stage 1+ tune on my SQ5, and it does 0-60 in 4.1, and runs the QM in 12.2 at 106.
It’s a superior engine that was just tuned down from the factory imo

My wife's owned both, A GLC43 from October '16 'til last week, and now a 2018 SQ5. Whilst it would be unfair to say the GLC has been nothing but trouble it has had air suspension failure twice, and on >75% steering lock the front tyres scrub very badly. This is down to different components used in the front differential of our UK right hand drive cars compared with those in LHD markets. Added to the unreliability and scrubbing our MB dealer has been less than impressive on the customer service front, as too has Mercedes UK. Our Audi dealer has, on the other hand, been utterly brilliant. As for the fake leather seats in the GLC? Yup, very obviously plastic and horrible to touch. They're not that comfy either.

There's a certain "something" about owning an AMG though...like you're a member of an exclusive club...The idea of this being a massaged engine just makes you feel like a part of things...very difficult to explain. An Audi? ~meh...what's so special about that?

I drove both of these before landing on the GLC 43 AMG. The Audi isn't as fast, and honestly, it felt boring to me. He isn't wrong about the Sport+ mode...it is pretty bonkers, and kind of harsh with the shifts. It works great in manual mode, but you need to be paying attention.

I love the "star field" grill of the GLC43. and nothing says "Performance" like the ///AMG badging! You see that you *KNOW* this is a vehicle to contend with! And there's just something about that Exhaust "bark" when ripping up the asphalt that get's people's attention! I recently did a 2,000 mile cross country drive in 3 days and spent a week at the beach 600 miles away and averaged more than 24mpg the entire trip! Of course, I had it in Eco mode and cruise control almost the entire time! Once we were at the beach and had no more hills to contend with, getting 27mpg was trivial! And that's loaded down with all sorts of beach stuff in the back and a roof carrier on top of the AMG. I think the biggest difference though is that the AMG is an enthusiast car...its for people who want to have fun on their commute and enjoy the launch and flat cornering it offers.. This thing feels like it's on rails and just makes you say "whoa" every day on your commute!

They forgot to mention the interior build quality, which is poor for this generation of GLC and far superior for Audi. I drive 2020 GLC43 and the interior produces all types of sounds when it’s cold outside (I live in Canada). Rattles coming from at least 2-3 places which dealership can’t replicate. That’s partly because of a very stiff air suspension setup (even in comfort mode with 19’ winter wheels).
Oh yes, and crabbing issue is bad even on winter wheels.
Switching to Audi Allroad soon and can’t be happier.

    • @ekummel

I don't see that in my staggered 20 inch wheels. And my 2018 GLC43 has no creaks or noises when barreling down the highway or on the washboard streets of the city. In fact, the bouncing around of my umbrella in the back cargo area is the most annoying thing. But then again, I'm accustomed to sportier vehicles and enjoy the solid feel of the road beneath me.

When driving in comfort/sport modes on comparisons please show us both in comfort/sport modes + have similar tire packages, both upgraded or not upgraded when doing a sport utility segment. It does make a difference. PS Do not quote factory specs, show us live measured/revealed footage. This will allow the viewer to make his/her own opinion on what they consider a better “Sport SUV” for themselves when the envelope of each vehicle is pushed. Also, show highway, city, backroad segments with extra cameras to gain better footage of the ride they present in each category. The SUV Market is the largest competition in the USA and in other countries as well. Give us a complete review that this segment deserves as well as your viewers.

Not a bad review, but a few of your complaints on the GLC are easily correctable. If you don't like the faux leather, then don't get it. Get the real stuff. Carbon fiber trim is available. The Q5s have always felt a little heavy. I personally find that charming, but the scowl of the exhaust from the GLC43 is orgasmic and I'd prefer that all day long over the sound of the SQ5. I don't feel the SQ5 is more refined, but more like refined differently. In the end, its simple personal taste. Benz's always win the valet test anyway. If you pull up to the valet in each of these cars at the same time, but there's only one spot up front, which car will get that spot? Easy answer!

The comparison at the end was pointless given the characters of both cars. You would expect a sporty GLC 43 to jerk when slowing down; that’s the trade off! And the Audi drives anything but heavy, especially in comfort mode. However, you say the steering is light, comfort mode surely! And the styling is anything but boring! Both are great cars and clearly competing against one another.

I also have an 2018 Audi S3 with an APR stage II tune with a downpipe and 93 octane here in the North East. This thing flies, and makes around 380 hp. Guess what my SQ5 is my preferred driver.
It really just works, transmission, engine, is just so smooth, effortless acceleration, really love it.
Cannot wait until APR can come up with a flash for this motor! Imagine over 400 hp! really c'mon APR this is the next halo motor from Audi, already being used in the R8 as well.

GLC43 for me. The SQ5 is boring inside and out. And in my experience with my former S5, all of the interior materials looks and feel great, but what you can't see is highly questionable. I've never had a car, especially one over $60k that was plagued with so many squeaks and rattles from day one. At one point, I thought the entire front dash was going to fall to the floor, and I had less than 40k miles on it.

AMG all day long. WTF is with the fake exhaust ? Seriously who at Audi ok'd this abomination ? I am considering this car as my 3rd Merc. Both our GLK and GLE have been bullet-proof. The GLC is a great car for a small family that has side potential for Daddy to have some hoonigan fun when the opportunity presents itself. Lets be honest though, this cars main duty will be to cruise to school, karate and the occasional sprint to 65 on the highway. In every facet the Merc wins: Exterior- GLC, Engine- GLC, Interior GLC. HANDLING- GLC. That exhaust note along burys any chance of the Audi being on my short-list. Audi is def asleep at the wheel.

Ah benz does not make their vehicles in the softest setting because they want to find balance between comfort and sporty driving...just main focus is comfort but they want the a good amount of sporty experience for drivers too...

John Heck Suv segment. That GLC is modelled directly at Q5 buyers. Or potential Q5 buyers. It’s referred to as the Mercedes Q5 by my car friends. The design aesthetic has been led by Audi since around 2008. From the led lights, class leading interiors that inspired almost every manufacturer to raise their game. Audi was nowhere with market share 10 to 15 years ago. The have grown to close the gap while Benz claims more sales due to their massive cargo division of trucks.
