Nice stuff bro keep them coming I was always confused on how to throw the lead left hook you cleared it up for me I'm gonna use this tool for my next fight in Alabama on Nov14th I dedicated this fight to my Dad Rip and my disabled Mom thanks again.
Very rare to get someone who both is a first rate boxer and first rate communicator. No ums, repetition, wasted words. Straight to the point. Best boxing instruction on RUclips.
I'm a beginner at boxing coming from a karate background (taekwondo) and now moving into kickboxing with my trainer, I've done about 3 months of boxing training. I've watched a ton of videos but watching your instruction on the hook and the mechanics is by far the most clear & informative demonstration of how to do it. I really appreciate that your giving away you top moves. Good stuff !
I love thumb up mid-range lead hooks, and what really made the movements make sense was imagine your stirring a big pot. This movement also help throw multiple lead hooks.
Tony been doing boxing workouts for 40 years, heard a lot , watched a lot, just started watching your videos recently, and must admit I won't watch anyone else again, you are spot on, thank you sir.
As a left hander fighting from a traditional stance, I always relied on my left hooks. I was always able to generate much power inside with it. However, the flat footed hook to the body with the weight shifted hook to the head is a move I wished I had years ago. That rib tap will drop your opponents hands every time, and followed with a powerful hook to the head can be a devastating move. Good stuff.
Perfect. Transfer weight onto the lead leg and that's the set up for any of the hook variations. Pretty much can be extrapolated to any punch. It's so cool to keep revisiting basics :)
I was learning lead hook punch from 2 months, but you just explained it in 8 minutes. Hats Off to you.🙏🙏 Who the fuck are disliking such a wonderful video
Newbie here just using the gym heavy bag for cardio. THANK YOU - hooks always felt super awkward for me, and the tweaks to the footwork helped me immensely
You can tell that your left hook to the body is your best punch.. by just the way you throw or with ease. It’s like you practice that punch for years and years 👏👏👏
I couldn't throw a left hook from age 17 to 29 because I had torn off a tendon in my shoulder and it would dislocate , so I had to spar with it taped up if I wanted to stand in traditional stance. Well didn't take long for guys to figure out i had no left hook ! Don't recommend it. But it did force me to get good at switching leads , Got it fixed and spent few years learning to trust it and how to throw them and was surprised how many different ways people threw them and why. Great series, glad i found it . Learning new things even though I'm 57
Yeah hooks are the most versatile punch and lots of different good ways to throw them imo. Couldn’t imagine fighting without being able to throw left hooks, that would be an unbearably frustrating disadvantage in every single fight. By far my favourite punch if I’m honest love throwing a crisp hook, followed by the crack sound.
Bro I know this is three years old but this is great imo. I feel like I suck at throwing lead hooks and this breakdown is super friggin simple and throwing them makes alot more sense to me now. Ty.
ive been learning boxing from youtube for 3 years or so because i dont have access to a gym or anything and i have been struggling with the lead hook since i started but all it took was an 8 minite video for me to learn it pretty well so thank you Tony, good man✊🏼
Hey Tony, even if it’s been said numerous times: thanks for all your videos. You really teach the sweet science of boxing, mindset included, and that’s awesome! I have a question on the lead hook and the knee rotation. If you look at some boxers, like Canelo, their lead leg is solidly fixed on the ground while they throw their lead hook. Is it just a preference there, or do you loose power while rotation the knee?
@@Tony_Jeffries Conversely, I’ve seen it said that rotating solely on the back foot and keeping the left foot still, as opposed to pivoting it, gets a little more speed and power on that lead hook. Is that true?
I'm tall but like fighting in close. I use a lot of head movement til I get inside then roll/dip my shoulders and use my elbows to steer you where I want you. If you throw a crisp jab (i work everything off my jab), and change levels you can get them shook and not knowing if your 1-2 is jab head, right cross head, or jab head, right cross body. So, after getting them thinking about the fundamentals I get in close and roll left. I'll try to put my right shoulder on their right shoulder and be chest to chest. I'm naturally loaded hard, down, left. When I throw the lead left hook to the body because I'm 6.4" I come up with it a bit and try to sink the bottom right rib into their liver. If you get everything right. When you come in you get them to back peddle. I try to follow up with another left hook to the head. Great video, man. I appreciate them. Thank you, Sir.
yeah so I'm gonna go to my second session tomorrow. Got my mouthguard made ready. Your tips help me a great deal thanks. Just practiced with you an hour and I think especially for my hip strength/mobility this is an amazing sport for me. Just gotta protect myself well. The stamina part of this sport is really similar with skateboarding in my experience so far
Very informative video, solved lots of my questions. I recently found myself kept hurting my fingers when throwing hooks, and from this viedo I realized that it's because of the thumb position. I changed the thumb to the downward position when throwing long-range hooks and it's way better.
Hi Tony, congrats for your sessions, very accurate, understandable (even for a non-native speaker), absolutely practical. Keep up the excellent work, best for you.!
Thank you. I’ve always been fascinated with hooks (exposure to Bruce Lee and Smoking Joe Frazier). I can’t wait to practice this on my bag (too old to spar anymore). I would like to have found your channel about 5-10 years ago.
Best tip I got was not to load up so much by twisting the upper body, but by twisting the hips. Loading at the hips instead fits really well into a kickboxing style where hip fakes are common
Thank you so much, mate! Because you know, left hook is a very complicated thing to do - it takes a lot of time to train the left hand to become a dangerous one - however, I will follow your instructions and see if I get any good.
When I get to the top you definitely have to be my manager, you're a true ring veteran, thanks for always sharing what u know with us, keep up the good work coach 🙏🙏🙏
It really is one of the, if not the hardest lead punches to throw without moving to set it up. Throwing it cold also feels like it's weak, Tony is right in demonstrating that even though it can be a lead punch, there must be some type of 'isometric preload'. I like the way Trinidad used to extend his lead arm out, then snap it back using the elbow as a spring to propel the forearm back towards the target (all very quickly), another way of getting velocity and snap together with a torso twist and weight transfer. I prefer to dip my right shoulder, put weight onto my lead foot, crouch a little as if in a slip and then twist and snapback, transferring weight from my front foot onto my back foot which creates more power and snap and is great for setting up a 3 -2 combo (left hook, right cross or other ).
I started boxing at home a few months back and I love your videos man!! I would love to see a video explaining the jab in depth, thanks so much for sharing your knowledge!
Huh, I am glad to hear the pivot hook is advanced... it's my favourite punch to throw with my lead hand. Pivot then hard straight right down the middle whilst stepping in and rotating back into a more square on stance.
I was just on the bag throwing the long range hook just like you hitting with top of the gloves and wondering am I doing it wrong but it felt way more powerful 😃 thanks Tony I will practice and perfect this for fight 👌
Hi Mate You make all this so easy , and we all know it's not . The best thing of all though is your explanations, this really lets us get your information into our heads . Brilliant thanks again . Vive et disce Tim

excellent explanation, I have questions that you answered especially with the weight shift and turning your lead foot when you throw the hook. Many thanks!
Going through all your videos because they're a phenomenal resource and just wanted to point out that your new stuff looks great. This is still great content but the editing and video quality have gotten way better over time.
1. back heel off ground, weight on front foot, after 2,4,6 or slip 2. mid range, drop back heel and turn front foot and heel off ground 3. thumb up stronger arm but less knuckle contact. thumb towards you more dmg but less stable arm 4. short range, hand closer to face, transfer weight of more power important since so close 5. long range, dont need to transfer weight to front to throw it, 6. turn hand so thumb towards you will hit with knuckles, 7. opponent guard by pulling hand back leaves open for cross 8. pivot with it, lead back and throw long hook 9. lead hook to body, no need for weight transfer 10. they drop hands, then hook to head, transfer weight on 2nd hook not first body hook
Me and my son call it during sparring/training the slap hook, fast but we can throw while measuring your opponent snap it and add weight to your knuckle, and yes my two boys love the liver shot, under used punch

This is one of the best boxing videos I've ever watched. I still have no idea how RJJ got as much power on that pull pivot hook as he did.
Excellent explanation. My lead hook WAS a weakness and since changing so my feet follow your example (front pivot) it’s increased 50% at least. 🥊👍
Excellent!

1. back heel off ground, weight on front foot, after 2,4,6 or slip
2. mid range, drop back heel and turn front foot and heel off ground
3. thumb up stronger arm but less knuckle contact. thumb towards you more dmg but less stable arm
4. short range, hand closer to face, transfer weight of more power important since so close
5. long range, dont need to transfer weight to front to throw it,
6. turn hand so thumb towards you will hit with knuckles,
7. opponent guard by pulling hand back leaves open for cross
8. pivot with it, lead back and throw long hook
9. lead hook to body, no need for weight transfer
10. they drop hands, then hook to head, transfer weight on 2nd hook not first body hook
