Melissa, really admire your moxie in taking on and completing the upholstery job (especially with all the demands of an infant). Beautifully done - from the rich color to the piping. It's all first-class, like it came from the factory. Good to see Ollie looking hale and hearty, which obviously is also a testament to your gifts.

A good alternative to sunbrella fabric is Sauleda . Less expensive than Sunbrella. Canvas can be sewn easily with a Singer heavy duty machine at a fraction of the price and weight of a Sailrite. For the buttons, use plastic button formers, not metal as they rust very quickly and stain the fabric. Great job on the upholstery btw - a huge difference 👍.

Dear Melissa, Andy, and captain Jack,
Willeke and I experienced this episode extra exciting because it is very difficult to make cushions for a sofa the way a professional upholsterer does. We think that Melissa has been more than succeeded in this because the cushions look absolutely beautiful and will be very comfortable to sit on. Melissa deserves all the praise in the world because Willeke isn’t able imitate her as what she said. We also loved to see the whole family.
Looking forward to your next vlog we send you love from the Netherlands

I had a small yacht (Achiles 840) for nine years sailing round the western iles of Scotland. Great Times! Sadly however I now no longer have her, so find myself living the dream through such wonderful people as yourselves. Thank you! Dominic.

Dear Sailing Melody family, especially Melissa this time.
👍👌👏 Oh WOW, simply fantastic! No wonder that the seats/cushions turned out extremely good with all the effort you put in the impressive upholstery job. The vacuum trick was ingenious. I definitely felt compassion because you had to change the height causing a lot of extra work. The blue fabric would also fit Blue (Steel) Melody very well. 2) You asked for alternatives for the cockpit enclosure and I already suggested lorry tarpaulin material: But how about using used sails? If the fabric needs to be washed, you can make them water resistant/water tight again with a white, milky like rubbery fluid in for instance a bathtub. I nevertheless still hope, that a company will donate/sponsor the special and expensive fabric for biminis and cockpit enclosures.
As always: Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and especially health to all 4 of you.

WOW Melissa! I've built cushions for our boat and it is very time consuming and detail minded. It really is an art and they look amazing. Don't worry about the mis-measurement. There is no other way to get from one side of a complex project to another without blind corners, and that experience for you is invaluable. Love that you made them extra cushy and comfortable. Most boat cushions are flat and uninviting, but this is your home. Well done! +1 Sailrite for Valentines Day!

Great job on the cushions Melissa! They look so good.
On the material, we’ve never managed to find a good cheaper alternative to Sunbrella, and for the Sprayhood/dodger (which you won’t need), went more waterproof with seamark, which we don’t regret. After 6 years and around the world it is still in great condition.
Zip heads : we prefer plastic, which does uv degrade, but no where as quick as metal zip heads corrode. Cover any exposed zips.
Thread: We used UV proof lifetime thread as previously we found after a couple of years in the tropics , polyester thread degraded and needed replacing. The canvas outlasts polyester thread.
We wouldn’t be without our sailrite. It has saved its cost several times over ! Nothing at a sailmakers costs less than $150 in the Caribbean. Recommend the heavy flywheel and get as many accessories as you can! They do come up second hand and lightly used.

Dear Sailing Melody family (especially Melissa this time):
Before I even watched the video till the end, I like to answer your question about alternatives to expensive cockpit enclosure material. I have to do this in 3 parts because otherwise the text will be too long and utube might block/shadow banning it. Without further ado please kindly allow me recommendations/suggestions. Part 1: Relatively heavy tarpaulin for lorries and trailers (available in 450 grams per m², 600 and 650g/m²). Used or new material in lots of colours can be purchased. You don't need to sew. All you need is a heat gun, a spatula, a spatula nozzle for the heat gun (if I remember correctly) and a roller to put/roll pressure onto the freshly heatglued together material. Of course you also need an inexpensive device to punch holes for eyelets etc. into the tarpaulin. This longlife material is absolutely waterproof and sturdy. I have a custom made green (of course 💚 😁) tarpaulin on my always outside parked car trailer for at least 16 years. It's still okay! I doubled the material where it's bending over the brackets, on edges and where the eyelets are. This helped a lot to achieve longer lifespan of the tarpaulin. The only thing that might not be good for using it as a cockpit enclosure is, that the material smells a bit "rubberish" (at least when it's new).
To be continued = Part 2 will follow. Until then: Best regards, luck and especially health to all of you.

      @@SailingMelody
      You're welcome, it's my pleasure.
Thanks for replying and especially for giving a heart to my comment. As you know, I always and totally appreciate both very much.
      2) I already suggested used sails and lorry tarpaulin as alternative materials for your cockpit enclosure. Now: How about using a used tent respectively used tents? Maybe you could even use the zippers? By the way: I would absolutely love to donate my old tent (fabric is in good shape) to you. But unfortunately the shipping costs to Great Britain are ridiculous high (even more after Brexit and Covid happened). As an early retired person and a German living in Germany, money is extremely scarce. Otherwise I would love to help at last, sigh.
      3) The next alternative I have in mind is using fabric from professional tents (for pathfinder associations for instance). The fabric is quite sturdy. My former second best friend (who is not longer a real friend), sells and let produce those tents. I will nevertheless ask him if he likes to donate fabric and impregnation fluid or even sponsor one of your videos. But to be honest, I don't have high hopes. He owns a small business and he has suffered a lot for two years because of covid.
      Sincerely yours.

Don't be too afraid of using a standard sewing machine in canvas. Ours had no trouble sewing Sunbrella roof panels together - often with four layers of fabric - sometimes more. Your machine won't love it, but it should handle it just fine. Canvas isn't nearly as bad as some upholstery fabrics out there.

I'd have loved to be a fly on the wall while you were working away. The Melody of different swear words in harmony. Great on Ollie to give you the time to work even though the majority was late at night. And yes this was the first video I've seen without Andy. I could amaging the words coming out of your mouth when you first got the cushions to the boat and they didn't fit. Like I said would have been a show to watch if I was a fly on the wall. What an utterly fantastic job you've done there Melissa. They're gorgeous! I felt your pain though as I'm currently 4 cushions of 6 in for my saloon. You helped me make my mind up on whether to add buttons to my back rests - well worth the extra work.

Definitely worth it! Buy just don't buy the ones I bought! Ones that you use a running stick round them are better. I need to redo all the buttons as they keep coming apart!

Amazing I can sew a patch on my work jeans by hand never could use a sewing machine. But cracking job. You ken what will happen now soon as a sail rips.
