"I hate rude behavior in a man, I won't tolerate it" Now that's a mighty strong statement about his character. Too bad we don't have a lot more men like that today!! The world just might be a bit better of a place!

Nah. Don’t forget that scene takes place because Call is angry a man is hitting his son. His son he refuses to acknowledge. He’d rather blame rude behavior and violently attack a man then just acknowledge Newt as his son.
So uh.. as a dad myself… no we don’t need more “men like that”. Plus Newt’s desire to seek his fathers approval literally leads to his death. (Spoiler)

Never really looked at the cast list initially, but 1st few years, I thought it was Kenny Rodgers & Robert DuVall playing in this & took me by surprise when I found out it was Tommy Lee Jones. Tommy Lee was a good actor in this, just reminded me of Kenny with his looks. Wish he reprised his role in the 2nd, quality just wasn't the same level.

I was a freshman in high school when the show premiered. My best friend and I LOVED this movie and still watch it to this day. In his early 20's my friend bought a replica of Gus' pistol. My friend recently passed away, and I can't share my excitement with him that I have just ordered a hat just like the one Gus wore from the same company in Texas that made Robert Duvall's Gus hat. I wish he could be here to share the excitement with me when it comes in.

And living in the San Antonio area I can think back to many a day long ago. As a kid we would go down to the San Antpnio river just south of downtown, was barely a creek in many spots you could literally jump across if it hadn't rain for awhile. It was controlled by the river authority and doesn't become much till you get to Espada park, where theres a dam for the water to build up. Bit of history right there, the aquaducts built by the Spanish (with Indian labor help) in the 1700's and some still carry water to this day, but they irrigated the fields in the area. Several missions in this proximity.
Anyway the river is controlled with the help of a tune of a tunnel some 300 feet down constructed in the 1980's and maybe into the 90's. I've wondered how it ran through town at that time

They showed up at a restaurant in Pittsburg, Texas called the Hot Link Stand. I had no idea they were making this great movie. I did get the actor's Robert Duvall autograph...but at the time I did not know the significance. This is one of the most outstanding movies and my husband knows and can tell you what their lines are before they say them. Thanks for those five best scenes.

Lonesome Dove is simply the best western ever made. There isn't any living actor who could bring Gus McCrae to life. Mr. Duval was his brilliant self in this role. The Walker-Colt had a lengthy and inconsistent lock-time; a shooter would have to be a marksman and a mathematician to shoot glassware from the air. Western mythology in film is why Wyatt Earp left Hollywood as a Western Film Advisor; he couldn't stomach the fiction. Personally, I don't care as I see it as entertainment and not documentary.

@David Lee Actually, Deets (a.k.a. Bose Ikard) lived a full, long life working for Charles Goodnight (Woodrow's real life counterpart) and died of natural causes. The words from Woodrow's testament to Deets are the actual words Goodnight had carved into the monument he had erected for Deets.

    • @samcotter7320

Deets was modeled after Bose Ikard who is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Weatherford, Texas. The exact words that Call quoted about Deets is on Ikard’s grave, placed there by Charlie Goodnight. Charles Goodnight and Oliver Loving were the models for Lonesome Dove. Oliver Loving was actually brought back and is buried in the same cemetery as Ikard.
