this is awesome... i love learning about how anime is made. everyone who plays a role in making anime has to work very hard!!! there are so many people behind the scenes and it's important to understand the hard work that they do.

The animation process is really fascinating, there’s so many moving parts that go into it, but it all comes together in the end, just like building a structure or machine.
It must be hard to replicate someone else’s character design, so I have a lot of respect for the in between artists.
And imagine the manpower required for the animations of something like from ufotable. To make it look that smooth and crisp... so impressive.

I'm currently doing an animation course in university. And Iam tell ya animation (both 2D and 3D) is hard. Also Shirobako is a very good show that goes deep in the animation process.
    Can't wait for the next episode/class 😊

(massive applause) as I watched this I had flashbacks to how Disney animated movies were created decades ago. The frame by frame work that you spoke of and so on. To know that this is relatively the same format used in anime today... well, I will never take for granted all the amazingly hard work that goes into producing a single episode TWENTY-FOUR FRAMES A SECOND! And I had the audacity to get upset when my favorite animes would take a week off between episodes. Thank you for enlightening me!!!

I love your using various clips from shows that depict the actual process. What are all shows you are referencing from? I love watching these types of shows like New Game where they show the process of making a video game. Studying animation myself a while back, I'd love to see these shows on creating an anime or just showing the BTS of animation.

When I understood all the hard work needed to create anime i decide to only watch it on legal websites like CR, Funimation, and others. This way I know I'm contributing at least a little to the effort of all those people.

really informative! with all the in-betweeners and stuff, you should talk about what it's like to animate critical fight scenes where things are moving so fast that it seems like the shapes and looks of characters are all distorted. like the famous naruto vs pain fight distortions, how do in-betweeners and directors know what is acceptable consistency when there is crazy action going on??? or is that all critical animators?

So cool! I just subscribed and cant wait for the next episode. I would love to know the if there are any meaningful differences in how different studios approach animation. For those interested, I think Netflix had a documentary on Hayao Miyazaki and it actually showed the part where he painted in the frames (which sounds like it isn't very common anymore).

Unfortunately the anime industry is not what it used to be. Most production companies are not willing to take any financial risks for the sake of good art and plot. This largely has to do with the fact that there is little money to be made in animation as a whole. Back in the 1980s to early 90s, Japan's economy was very strong, and animators we're giving decent living wages. They could take financial gambles for the sake of creativity. Today Japan's economy is still stagnent. Animators must work ridiculous hours for a wage that is below that of an average salary man. Companies will no longer sacrifice the small budgets they have for creativity, they only want cliche plots with over-used gags and story lines because it sells quickly. As far as I know, no Japanese animation company makes OVAs anymore. instead they produce so many cheap shows that most of them are forgotten within a year.
