I appreciate the straight forward videos. Thank you. I am new to the Apple ecosystem and this was useful for remote management instead of constantly going to a users desk.
Hi Jesse, Your video produced 3 years ago helped me a lot today!!! I bought a Mac Mini M1 from Costco to host a ROON Core music management software tied in with a Bluesound Node streamer for my stereo gear. You demo and instructions were spot on so I say a BIG THANK YOU for helping me to set up a headless mac mini with our iMac. Best to you👍👍
Virgil thank you and your setup sounds awesome! Just note that if your Mac Mini reboots there is a chance that it will not get the same IP. So what I do usually is use my router software on my phone which list all my devices with IP addresses. If you do not have that capability then you can use terminal app and look at your IP of Mac you are on and just start pinging other addresses. So if yours is 192.168.1.2, then type: ping 192.168.1.3 and so on till you find the correct device. You can also install the command line utility called nmap which is great at gathering info from devices on your network. Cheers bud and have a great night and enjoy the sweet setup😁.
ohhh wow.. I was waiting for my hdmi to vga cable from online store.. and my mac mini M1 was useless without display.. Now that is in use from my other macbook :-) Thank you very much.
This is perfect for my use case. I have a mac mini on a stage taking a multitrack recording from a digital mixer (StudioLive Series III 24R) via the USB, but the tech booth is about 100ft away. So this will allow me to create a LAN where I can control the mac on stage from the mac in the tech booth. I was stressing myself out looking into Extenders, repeaters etc, when I could just use another Mac to control it.
My parents are considering buying their first Mac by getting one of the new M1 MacBook Airs. They are a 5 hour drive away and even if I did want to see them I can’t because of COVID. Could I do this from my house and access their new MacBook? Thanks so much for the video👍

Did you remote into the mac with another mac while trying to unlock with Apple Watch? I have not seen this message before, so I can try to replicate. If you have the menu bar item that shows screen sharing status it changes when someone is screen sharing to the mac. To enable the Remote Management menu bar item: open System Preferences -> Sharing -> Select Remote Management and select Computer Settings button. Within this pane select Show Remote Management status in menu bar. When no one is connected it will be binoculars and when someone is connected it changes to 2 small screen squares.

Thanks for your outstanding videos! I hope you can help me with my question about screen sharing. So call computer 1 the one in which we set "screen sharing" and computer 2 the one in which we set "remote management". I currently have 2 screens that I use on computer 1. I guess I will need to temporarily disconnect one of the screens and use that screen to boot up and set "remote management" on computer 2. After I have done that, can I then disconnect the screen from computer 2, and reconnect the screen to computer 1, so now computer 1 has 2 screens as I normally do, and computer 2 has no screens? That is, computer 2 does not need its own screen as I can see computer 2 through the shared screen on computer 1? ____________ Another question - Do both computers need to be physically connected to my modem/router using an ethernet cable, or is it possible for computer 2 to be part of the network some other way, like through wi-fi (my modem/router has limited number of ethernet ports). If I do connect through wi-fi, is that a lot slower data transfer than connecting through an ethernet cable?
Hey Barry, Yes you can disconnect the monitor and reconnect to your main Mac 1 which will be using the Screen Sharing app on. Just keep in mind that if the Mac restarts from an update the IP address might change, which if you have an app for your router then you should be able to find the new IP without reconnecting the monitor to Mac 2. This video here is my latest Remote Mac video and shows how to setup port forwarding to access the Mac from outside your home network. ruclips.net/video/4rAD3DyBnKo/видео.html The difference between WiFi and Ethernet connected has a lot of factors, like router type, Ethernet cable type, distance of WiFi and surrounding walls. what is the story to assist a friend where they need to share their screen with you while sitting behind a typical households broadband modem/router firewall, i.e. the macos equivalent of windows "quick assist"?
myusrn olk There are Apps like Screens or Bomgar that you can use to remote control a Mac from afar. If the user has a router that does port forwarding, then they can forward port 5900 to the IP of the Mac to control. When you use screen sharing to the outside IP of the router it will forward your request to the Mac and allow a screen sharing session. The screen sharing session is not encrypted so it is advised to put that SS session into an SSH Tunnel. I hope this helps.
@@AppleNinja thanks for the reply. so if the person at the other end isn't technical enough to create tcp/5900 port forwarding entry in their broadband router then sounds like macOS teamviewer host and the person helping them using teamviewer winOS/macOS client and no port forwarding setups would be necessary, agree?
myusrn olk I have never used TeamViewer, but it looks like a great option. You might be able to just use the TeamViewer QuickSupport option as well. Will you let me know how this works for you?

But something has changed recently... now when I spy using screen sharing and all the settings you suggest, my kids' screen announces "your screen is being observed" - so I'm caught red handed. NEW VID WITH OFF NETWORK STEPS:
Remote Desktop Mac - Screen Share Mac from ANYWHERE!
ruclips.net/video/4rAD3DyBnKo/видео.html
I appreciate the straight forward videos. Thank you. I am new to the Apple ecosystem and this was useful for remote management instead of constantly going to a users desk.
is this procedure applicable regardless where the 2 macs are?
Good Lord that is too easy. I'll be doing this for my wife's laptop immediately. No more "HOW DO I" phone calls.
It is super easy! Have an awesome day Jeremy!
Hi Jesse,
Your video produced 3 years ago helped me a lot today!!!

Is it possible to manage a macbook in the same way but with windows?
Yes you can manage a MacBook remotely with a Windows device. You just use the VNC option.
yes, it worked with the ultra vnc viewer program
Thank you! This really helped for what I was looking for. And love how simple, easy and straightforward you explained...! 😃
Thanks for the positive feedback 😁
Thank you! Really helped us, especially during these times of isolation!
ohhh wow.. I was waiting for my hdmi to vga cable from online store.. and my mac mini M1 was useless without display.. Now that is in use from my other macbook :-)
Thank you very much.
Heck yeah this is perfect for that! We use to do this same type of remote control back when I worked in television. Glad it works for ya!
Does this work with different OSX? And will I be able to run any applications once I'm in? Like turn on the spotify on the computer, etc...
My parents are considering buying their first Mac by getting one of the new M1 MacBook Airs.
They are a 5 hour drive away and even if I did want to see them I can’t because of COVID. Could I do this from my house and access their new MacBook?
Thanks so much for the video👍

There is a way to remote and share the screen by using Messages. But when I try to do the same with a friend of mine, the option is not appear available for me, I can not understand why.

How can I go into incognito mode? I followed the instructions and it showed "being observed" on the laptop that was screen sharing. I can't seem to turn this off and it pops up at the upper right corner of the screen next to the wifi bar. It looks like 2 squares overlapping.
I have a Mack book air and Mac mini. Can I set up the mini to boot up without a monitor connected and have the Air remote control it like this? I want to take the mini in my camper and record live music without having to bring a monitor with me. IF possible.
That’s actually creepy Dude but thanks for sharing this max feature 👍
Fantastic 😊
I was trying to log in my Imac and it wouldn't allow me to login using my apple watch because it says it was being screen shared? I don't share my screen... have I been compromised?
Did you remote into the mac with another mac while trying to unlock with Apple Watch? I have not seen this message before, so I can try to replicate. If you have the menu bar item that shows screen sharing status it changes when someone is screen sharing to the mac.
To enable the Remote Management menu bar item: open System Preferences -> Sharing -> Select Remote Management and select Computer Settings button. Within this pane select Show Remote Management status in menu bar.
When no one is connected it will be binoculars and when someone is connected it changes to 2 small screen squares.
@@AppleNinja no, didn’t even know it was possible. I was trying to log in my iMac and it wouldn’t log me in and it had a message on the screen that says I can’t log in with my Apple Watch because my screen was being shared
And it had this icon on the top right of my screen that looked it like two squares on top of each other
useful stuff!
____________
Another question - Do both computers need to be physically connected to my modem/router using an ethernet cable, or is it possible for computer 2 to be part of the network some other way, like through wi-fi (my modem/router has limited number of ethernet ports).
If I do connect through wi-fi, is that a lot slower data transfer than connecting through an ethernet cable?
Hey Barry,
Yes you can disconnect the monitor and reconnect to your main Mac 1 which will be using the Screen Sharing app on. Just keep in mind that if the Mac restarts from an update the IP address might change, which if you have an app for your router then you should be able to find the new IP without reconnecting the monitor to Mac 2.
This video here is my latest Remote Mac video and shows how to setup port forwarding to access the Mac from outside your home network. ruclips.net/video/4rAD3DyBnKo/видео.html
The difference between WiFi and Ethernet connected has a lot of factors, like router type, Ethernet cable type, distance of WiFi and surrounding walls. The best way to find out is to test both scenarios and see which works best for you with your current setup and configuration.
Good luck and hope this helps! Cheers!

What do you do if the macs aren’t on the same network? Looking to remote into my mother’s Mac from my house to her house
You would need to have port forwarding capabilities on your mom’s internet router at her house. You would need to login to her router and port forward any traffic coming in on port 5900 to the Mac you want to control, using either a Hostname (URL) or IP address.

@@AppleNinja thanks, but do i need static ip address when i add it to the router?
Your outside IP address acts like a static IP. Mine rarely changes, but it does every once in awhile. I was actually thinking about writing a script that checks daily and if it changes to email me the new IP.
@@AppleNinja how often did you had to change your IP address if at all ?
is it possible to do this without wifi connection?

is ther a way to do it with MDM managenet ON THE DEVICE?
Yes you can with either built-in functionality or by deploying a script to enable, but not with just an MDM Management Profile. Jamf has the Jamf Remote Application which allows the same functionality for Screen Sharing into a Jamf Managed Mac.
@@AppleNinja thanks I will look into Jamf.

how can keep my imac (at home) screen locked while working on it remotely via mac book pro?
You would need an app like ARD (Apple Remote Desktop), which has curtain mode which allows you to use a custom message. ARD is not free though. Hope this helps. Take care

what is the story to assist a friend where they need to share their screen with you while sitting behind a typical households broadband modem/router firewall, i.e. the macos equivalent of windows "quick assist"?
myusrn olk There are Apps like Screens or Bomgar that you can use to remote control a Mac from afar.
Such a great video, I've used the "spy" option thru the lockdown on my kids' computers. But something has changed recently... now when I spy using screen sharing and all the settings you suggest, my kids' screen announces "your screen is being observed" - so I'm caught red handed. Any tips for me? Was this an OS update change that caught me off guard? Thank you so much!
Or! Do my kids' machines have to be "standard" user account (vs. administrator)? Thanks
hi , thank you , i wonder how to hear with headphones what the other computer is playing . i cant hear!
Unfortunately you cannot hear the audio from the other computer, which is a bummer.
Hello Apple Ninja,
Thank you for your detailed tutorial in enabling the Screen Sharing on Mac.
Could you tell us if it is possible for the computer that we are connecting to remotely to have the screen locked? In other words, we are trying to work on the computer remotely in private. Apple technical support is telling us that it is not possible. Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection locks the host computer during the connection automatically.
Thank you and have a joyful rest of the week! :)
The only way I know of is to use the Apple Remote Desktop application and use Curtain Mode, which puts a black background with a custom message of your choice. Have not seen that feature in any other apps that I am aware of.
Hope this helps and you have an amazing week as well :)
Thank you my friend codos to you :-)
