my great grandmother knew him! she tells me all about how he lived in a hotel across the street from her pharmacy and used to come in and play dice with her...
I was in a band that traded sets with Harry at Harrah's in Reno back in 1965 or '66 and what a treat to listen to this band every night. Harry loved his Keno and actually hit the $25,000 prize while we were there. His comment: "I think I'm close to breaking even now." He was a very cool guy. Very real.
What an awesome band---man I love it right after Harry James announces that they're going to play "Don't Be That Way" that orchestra just THUNDERS right into the opening riff!! They had a POWERHOUSE sound along with superb musicians---it's a damn shame there isn't more recorded output from this band--IMHO one of the greatest big-bands of all time!!
this man is for me like daily bread! I'm happy that he was living on this world and that he could give to us these famous songs! I love trumpet, i love Harry, I love my grandfather (he was the best trumpet man in Czech Republic, now he has swing orchestra of Vaclav Hlavac). I have played on trumpet for 13 years and I hope, that i will be good at least my grandfather, but this man is god for me! As the same like Ferguson:)
I had the privilege of accompanying HJ on the piano when he came to our college to perform -- I had never heard a trumpet go that high before and he could "tongue it" faster than I'd ever heard, even double-tongue it! -- it was very exciting! He was incredible! One of the very best ever on that instrument!
I saw and danced several times. He never had to warm up, and very approacable.. An avid baseball fan . Was in St. Pete area every spring, for bookings, so to see his Cardinals play. Great guy.
Brilliant! I am yet to hear a big band replicate that amazing sound and electricity that the Harry James band had. Also gotta love Buddy Rich's amazing penmanship on the kit, he just nails it.
Great, very great. Harry had one of the best bands ever! Goodman did this first. Remember Harry was lead in his band on the Carnagie Hall live album version? This is priceless,
Buddy's stick twirl at the end of a number was like a gunslinger about to reholster his 45. And make no mistake he was and always will be the master drum gunslinger.
so so true..i oft. said the exact same thing of those twils but yeah i lived ate drunk and slept buddy almost my entire life luckily i got to hang w him at times smokes pot w him a couple and i dunno talk about a truly real man i loved him and still do i could cry everyday if i allowed myself to do so only bc i miss him and his magical music box..sadly he took those charts w him when he checked out of this dump..ive been less happy ever since and its been 30 plus years now..SMH how i miss this music
harrys solo in 1936 at carnigie hall with benny was perhaps one of the greatest solos ever played ..dont know who arranged that sing sing sing chart but who ever did made a really great arrangement showing off each artist back then , and yes it was written by louie prima a new orleans trumpet player . bobby g
Great drummer, maybe the greatest ever, but Buddy Rich, was, in mine and several others' opinions, a world-class a-hole for the way he treated his musicians. Ooh I bet this gets a lot of ranty thumbs downs, or who's with me?
Where Artie Shaw once had to convince Billie Holiday to use the service elevator of the hotel where they were performing because blacks werent allowed in the regular elevators, James had his whole band to pack up when told a hotel didnt have a room for one black bandmate. The hotel gave in.
Here you are ladies and gentlemen the phenominal over whelming and his great super great big band. Notice take notice who is the fire power the driver in this band???? His initials are B R,. Mr. Buddy Rich the greatest drummer ever driving that James Big Band into Ultra High Gear thats it give me Buddy with Harry any time. enough said
Harry must have rehearsed and drilled his crew until the cows came home. he barely seem s to give direction at all! Everyone just pays and they get right every time!
That was strange. Buddy picked up a triangle about 3/4's thru and played it and then put it down. It looks like it may have been an edit from another song, put in this one.
@swiftflag2 April, I don't remember your name in association with Harry, but I think I remember it with Sam Donahue--maybe when he was in Reno?? Did you ever perform with Sam?? And, did you tour with Harry, or were you more stationary?? Thanks, B.
Funny! Despite all the glitz his womanizing (his piano player Jess Stacy once asked,"Do you have to get laid eery night?"), his high-profile marriages (Betty Grable was the love of his life, as its turns out), public displays (he once punched out actor George Raft at the Palladium) and excessive gambling, James was also a person who stood up for blacks in an era rife with racism. He was a man who loved his band and stood by them.
1:46 my dad on trombone Ray Sims. Thank you for the video. He has long since passed away but it's cool to have so many ways to still see him.
my great grandmother knew him! she tells me all about how he lived in a hotel across the street from her pharmacy and used to come in and play dice with her...
I play this almost everyday - just to remind me what talent once inhabited the world of music..

CRAZY! MAN!

Harry was The Greatest!!
eine großartige Band, die ich immer wieder gerne anhöre und hier mir ansehe!
The greatest trumpet player ever.
That's why they call him 'King James'.
Harry was one of the very best. Love his music.

Great, realy great. Harry had one of the best
bands ever. Have most of his records, thanks for posting this vid,oh yaaa man!!!
awesome. Thanks for posting this video, those were the days, the Big Bands were fabulous.
Great, realy great,Harry had one of the best
sounding bands ever
One of my favorite songs from the big bands and I love and enjoy it very much. Thanks peejay1975 for uploading it!
Hey, I noticed Buddy Rich on drums !!! :)
This tune swings like a gate. Outstanding stuff.
I love any solo by Harry James. He is electric even when he's not trying to be.
Great, very great. Harry had one of the best
bands ever! Goodman did this first. Remember Harry was lead in his band on the
Carnagie Hall live album version?
This is priceless,
No one could play a trumpet like Mr. Betty Grable! :-D
Buddy is fantastic! Nobody is half as good as him.
A great band, one of many from this era.
Great Jitterbug & Jive sounds! My 9 year old grandson just asked me, "Papa, what's a Jitterbug and what's Jive?"
Harry was one of THE best

That little stick twirl by Rich at the very end...very cool.
Just before entering the stage at Carnegie Hall with Benny Goodman in 1938, Harry James muttered "I feel like a whore in church". True story.
Há muito tempo não ouvia essa música beleza!
harry james is so cool he practically had icecicles hanging off him
yep , thats what harry would do .. he was class all the way ..
top notch role model ..

QUE LINDA MÚSICA CON TANTOS RECUERDOS..--..

この曲を聴くと昔のベニーグッドマンを思い出す,当時のGMはクラリネット奏者で,
流れはこんな感じでした共通点は楽しい演奏に
No green horns in that group

He also had an acid personality and a brain tumor. Which came first? He was respected as a hot drummer, but very few people actually liked him.
You're right, it does look like an edit.
that's right what you say, but the concert was on january 1938
Harry must have rehearsed and drilled his crew until the cows came home. he barely seem s to give direction at all! Everyone just pays and they get right every time!
This is the same arrangement as Benny's except the trumpet does the main solos instead of a clarinet.
@JJ2NY I don't know that I can agree with you on this...

Alguien me puede "subir" a You Tube Toy Trompet by Harry James? Thanks You
ESSE TEMA ERA PREFIXO DE UM PROGRAMA DE TURFE DA EXTINTA TV PAULISTA CANAL 5 "TURFE EM REVISTA" APRESENTADO POR FAUSTO MACEDO.
Rather bad picture quality from 1965. Otherwise very good!
Ray Sims, bone solo.
Is that John Allred Sr. on trombone?
no way
Is This Song from Harry James or Benny Goodmann, I'm nor sure :P
Edgar Sampson & benny Goodmann
Buddy Rich is great but I prefer Gene Krupa as always!
The bassist is too fast.
