Just to clarify as people seem to be missing the annotation on the screen, I lost 42lbs after the first 10 weeks not 142lbs, that would be impossible. 🖤

I've lost 140 LBS since January 2019 and still need to lose another 46 LBS. When I started out I was out of breath just going to check the mailbox at the corner of my yard. I started slowly increasing the distance I walked over time and now in November 2021 I am walking 3 miles a day. I feel much better and stronger with the fresh air and walking outside. I've had a few bumps along the way but I'm sticking with it. I do intermittent fasting, low carbs, avoid sugars, flour, grains, and starches, eat lots of protein and vegetables that grow above the ground. I don't eat much dairy or fruit and rely on spinach and other vegetables for my Vitamins and Calcium. I have been successful in lowering my blood pressure and reversing my Type 2 Diabetes too. I've learned to not talk about my weight loss to people because they seem to try and discourage me or tempt me to fail. It makes weight loss a lonely endeavor at times but hearing success stories like yours is inspiring to me. Congratulations on your success!

I've found that too. When I talk about my weight loss others recommend bad behavior. "Oh it's so good you've lost weight but you shouldn't lose anymore " "you need to start eating oatmeal" yadda yadda. I'm low carb too and it's better to just get myself there. The Five Tips:
    1. Stop telling yourself "I can't" Believe in yourself and believe that you CAN, a step at a time.
    2. Evaluate how you spend your time; swap mindless activities for mindful activities that build the 'new you': take a bath, or a walk; read an inspiring book; do some stretching or yoga; do some exercise; etc,
    3. Stop watching food-related content - whether tv, RUclips, Pinterest, whatever!
    4. KISS! - Keep It Simple Sunshine! Focus on maintaining a calorie deficit and doing one hour of exercise daily (eg: go for a walk!) Stop trying to do/change everything in your life at once.
    5. Commit to yourself and your own goals and needs; make yourself your number one priority and stop worrying about what others might think or feel: eg it's okay to say "No, thank you" when offered food that does not fit with your weight-loss goals! Stop worrying about supposedly offending others!
Thank you Carla! These tips may not be "new" to me, but you have put them together in a way that really makes sense and is so straightforward that they are ACTIONABLE! I'll let you know how I get on!

Moderately surprised that the experiences of a 72yr old male has so much in common with a young woman from Ireland on the journey. My most recent weight loss journey has taught me that weight loss is an extension of confidence in one’s self and feeling comfortable with that. That losing weight is much more complicated then I was told about in the ‘50s-‘60s in central PA. It’s knowing the correct something about nutrition, eating properly, knowing something about triggers, and fully believing in one’s self and being comfortable in that. Rock on. You are one of my ‘go to’s’ on this.

Being a woman with ovulation and periods I really hit hard after my period and then for ovulation and period time I focused on maintaining weight best I could. Inched myself down 80lbs in 10 months.

joan i rarely eat after 4 pm. I walk everywhere or grab a bus. I can't fathom how folks afford to over eat. At 66 years i have always been stable in my weight. No junk food. No soda. No gorging. Coffee or water only. Sweets most always chocolate. Deny urself at times.

    • @makeit2649
      @makeit2649 2 года назад +24

@@terywetherlow7970 Please, be careful how you talk to those of us who struggle. As someone who has always been stable in weight, you probably "can't fathom" why we can't just do as you suggest. But think about the things that ARE a struggle for you. If someone else tells you how easy it is, and why don't you just (insert suggestions here), that makes you feel like a failure, doesn't it? What is apparently so easy for you - no junk food, no gorging - is unbelievably hard for us. If we could make ourselves do those things, we already would be doing them. We need grace and encouragement - not condemnation - while we each figure out why we are stuck, and how to get unstuck. If I'm mis-reading what you intended to say, then my apologies in advance and no offense intended from me.
Regarding the calorie restriction discussed in the video, I will note that calorie restriction alone is a dead-end for me; consistent exercise is the primary factor that keeps me on track. Why? Here is my theory: as a stress eater, exercise relieves my stress, so I am less triggered to eat (or keep eating) when I'm not hungry. Exercise also lowers cortisol -- which is also affected by stress and can impede weight loss, even when calories are restricted.
This is a great example of why it's wonderful to hear about what works for others, but remember that you can expect to undergo some trial and error to determine what actually works for you as a unique individual.

I’ve been on a weight loss journey for 11 months and went from 250 lbs to 128 lbs. I struggle so much to reach this weight today. My mom cooks too much fatty food that I’m afraid to eat😅 but I do sometimes in moderation. I tried cooking for myself with less oil , salt, and seasoning. My brother has a problem with me being allowed to cook wat I want. He’s always drinking and making it a regular habit to cuss abt it. I spent most of my savings to buy my cooking ingredients it’s not like I’m taking from my mom everyday. Still it’s a problem for him. It’s stressful sometimes. Loosing weight has always been my desire. Sometimes I wanted to give up but with god by my side I’m pushing through it.
Also I’m struggling because I’m not allowed to go gym, or exercise as I wished. Due to that my body isn’t well toned. I have some loose skin . Even my room is not so spacious to try gain some muscles 😭. They said high protein diet is good for muscles. But as I’m low on budget I normally eat canned tuna, red beans, black eyed beans, egg curry , multigrain/whole wheat roti , vegetable soups sometimes, sweet potatoes, sometimes plantain, multigrain biscuits, green peas. Sometimes carrot , sweet peppers. Sometimes fish curry and rice, some fruits that family eats. I can’t afford chicken breast everyday. Lately I’m trying soya chunks it has high protein.I don’t touch sugar only from fruits. I cut Pepsi I was a big fan of Pepsi everyday 😂. I eat those in repeat . Lots of water😅 Oh last month was first time I had sugar after so many month, an aunt forced me to eat pancake I was tired telling her no🙄. I hate going to relatives home they give so much junk food to eat even if u refuse. I decided to count does as my cheat days. Normally I hate cheat days but I think it’s okay once in a while. Also my desire is to lose 8 more pounds but my relatives always demotivates me saying why am I losing more weight I won’t look good. I will look ugly😓 So yeah it’s always been me alone no one by myself. Well thanks to my dad he helps me sometimes with a few dollars when he sees me need something 😭❤️ No one knows my feelings.
    - since my weight loss I’ve been more confident to go outside at shops, market or anywhere, I can talk to any relatives now without hiding. I’m thankful to god to give me the strength and faith that I can do it. My brother is still the main obstacle in my way.
No matter what the struggles are never up friends 👍
I’ve been struggling to have a job too😭 Hopefully I have one soon🙏 And hopefully my acne scares disappear soon🙏
    - Idk why I’m telling but there’s that😅😅

It seems to me that it's mental as much as physical for you. Try having a go with one of the personal development programmes, such as The Artist's Way by Julia Campbell. No need to be artistic. She puts focus on different aspects of life, shares her own thoughts on a topic within that and then challenges you to evaluate your own thoughts on it. Money, work, God, relationships etc. Puts you in a great position to decide exactly what you want for your own life and how to make it your reality. Your youngest is now an adult. You'll always be there, but your main focus is on what you want for you. We can't expect our children to take responsibility for their own lives if we don't set a good example. You're well on the way to doing that with your decision to prioritise your health. Good luck.

Personally, I lost 80 lbs, gained 20 back over 2020. Other than that, I have maintained my loss. I would like to lose another 80. One thing I did was stop using social occasions as an excuse to eat. For example, eat cake for someone's birthday. I eat what I want 3 days a year, now, Thanksgiving, Christmas & my birthday. No other exceptions.
I've also learned that I can get by with eating a lot less than what I believed I needed to feel full. One chicken thigh with veggies usually fills me up fine, now.
Conversely, I can drink a lot more liquids than I thought I could. I used to start feeling logy & waterlogged after about 6 glasses Originally I didn't even like water. Then I got to where I enjoyed it. However, the tap water where I live now tastes terrible, so I add a sugar free flavor packet to it, to make it palatable. I get these at Walmart, they come 6-10 packets in a box, usually for $1. I've tried Crush, Hawaiian Punch & Walmart's Great Value brands. I chose the Hawaiian Punch brand, with 8 packets per box. Each packet flavors 16 oz. of water. I drink almost 64 oz a day now. I don't drink juice or soda, but will drink 1 c. of milk most days. If I think I'm hungry, I try drinking something first, sometimes your body confuses the two.
The third thing I did was tell myself It's OK to be hungry sometimes. Rather than let my body railroad me into snacking, I just told myself that being hungry is OK, of course I'm going to feel hungry, if I'm eating less. Relax, Body, a little hunger is not going to kill you. As a matter of fact, it may save your life, in the long run! Great self talk!!

I enjoyed your video. I am 68 and lost 115 lb 10 years ago on Weight Watchers. I changed my attitude completely from being negative to being positive, and thanking yes I can instead of this is impossible. I am always mindful I kept a food journal and still do. I also have learned to say no and put myself first which was a very big step because I was always a people-pleaser instead of pleasing myself.
I realized that having to lose over 100 lb was overwhelming to me so I focused on 10 lb at a time. And after each 10 lb I gave myself a small non-food reward! I am not a gym person so I ended up buying a mini trampoline and a Fitbit, and try to get in 10000 steps a day but I don't make myself crazy with it and I decided if I wanted to watch TV I would do it while on my trampoline which helps keep me toned and away from the fridge! Another thing that I like to do is tweak recipes into healthier choices. I do look up recipes and challenge myself to turn them into healthier choices and I bulk up my food with vegetables and had become a vegetarian. I do eat eggs and low-fat milk products. Another thing that helped me is giving myself small doable challenges which makes you feel like you've accomplished something when you have met that challenge. Thank you for sharing all your wonderful tips. And congratulations on your weight loss and maintenance Journey. It's something to be so proud of.

Thanks Carla ! Great video . I am 73 years old , looking to lose 100 pounds . So far I have lost 42 pounds . I know I can do this because 11 years ago I lost 100 pounds . My problem is that after about a year of being thin I forget that I am still the same person , and start thinking I can eat what I want . That is impossible for me . I understand the pain you went thru , and I commend you for your will power . We all know how to lose weight , but keeping it off can be very tricky . I am now going to the gym every morning to walk 4 miles , only eating lunch and supper , and keeping the calories to about 1200 a day . Snacks , and eating between meals are off the table . I have lost the 42 pounds in about 2 1/2 months . Wearing my medium clothes , Put away my fat clothes , and looking at my thin clothes again . I can do this , anybody can , it just takes desire and strength that we all have ! I am almost 1/2 wat there , God bless you and congratulations on your weight loss !

I did this kind of thoughtful weight loss years ago and it works! I eventually through the years lost my goal and gained it back. You have inspired me to try again. Thank you so much for your story. Lady, these 5 things are SO SPOT ON. I've been thinking about these 5 things, too, in a less organized way. Thank you for putting them into such clear terms. (1) I had to stop telling myself that I inherited being a glutton from my dad, and there was nothing I could do about it except exercise more. This was related to the (2) grazing, or mindless eating you spoke of. No point in really trying to stop that because it's my nature. But who is in control of me? My dad's body? Or me? (3) TV! I've started turning off the TV a few nights a week and playing music instead. Funny - a lot of those little projects I've been wanting to do around the house are starting to get done. (4) So right about food-related content triggering eyeball hunger. I recently went through a 4-inch high stack of recipes I'd culled from magazines/newspapers and printed from the web and got rid of most of them except some that I will realistically make. And then I chose one to make this week. I"m unsubscribing from the 10-15 food-related emails I get every day. (5) THE GUILT from other people to eat the food they provide! Oy! My mom with cheesecake she baked: "I don't want to give it to you unless you are going to eat it." 5 seconds later: "You must eat it because I made it for you." Literally. And I would. Sometimes I bring it home and throw it away in secret (but most of the time I eat it). NO MORE! Thank you for naming this and saying it's not necessary to coddle others on this point.

I had a frenemy that used to get snappy when I was losing weight. It's a great feeling to lose the extra kilos, but also knowing that we're so determined to succeed in our goals that we actually offend those that don't really want us to do well. It seems weird that some would take our progress as if it was about them. It's about us, and what's best for us, our health, and our body. Shine bright 😊💎

For most of my life, I’ve been slim and never needed to think about weight. I might gain a few pounds when less active, down and then lose it without effort. Until this year. I’ve gained about 10 lbs but it’s not shifting. I’ve actually needed to get a few new pairs of jeans.
Your tips are just so simple, no fuss, easy to try- it’s wonderfully inspiring. One thing that doesn’t help is staying up late and eating till you fall into bed.
So I’m now walking more instead of sitting all evening after a sedentary job.
And I won’t be eating nonstop. Plus getting to bed at a decent time. Eating sensibly but for now, not counting calories.
It’s amazing what just walking will do if you are consistent.
    LOVED this video. Thank you!

Made a lot of sense. I have always said weight loss and mental health are intertwined. I'm starting my journey once Christmas is over. The main thing I will do different is not talking about being on a diet. I'm going to do it quietly and steadily between myself and God. I not going to use scales either, just the clothes in my wardrobe. X

    • @HalfofCarla

Brilliant! I’ve lost 120 lbs. so far and can see now that my success is more due to those big picture choices than the specifics of what I ate. I decided to focus on eating better not getting to a specific goal, to count calories but not go too low to start, to keep it simple not giving myself too many choices, to weigh & measure carbs, fats and protein, to keep a written record of my progress and if I fell off the wagon not to throw in the towel and binge but to get right back on my plan. I hadn’t thought about it that way & appreciate the insight.

This was so refreshing. I fell October of 2020 and sprained my hip and knee. I was unable to walk properly until April of 2021, or so I thought. I was in so much pain just trying to get around the house some days. I went to an ortho doctor and they didn't see anything wrong on my scans and xrays. Finally after almost a year of being in constant pain, barely able to walk for 5 consecutive mins, I gained 62lbs, and becoming severely depressed my primary doctor had enough of the ortho doctor sending me away. She sent me to physical therapy in September and my two ladies were angels in disguise. I found out my hamstrings were no longer working. My glutes and piriformis muscles were solely moving my leg. My left knee cap was being pulled to the left out of place. Also my piriformis was so tense and over worked that I lost 5cm off my height. I'm already short at 152cm, not like I could really afford to lose any more. I finally finished my therapy in November and they encouraged me to go to the gym/get a membership to work up the hamstrings strength and continue to build up muscle strength all over. I was more upset I gained so much weight being down and depressed. Its winter (for about the next 5 mons) and how am I going to be able to get out and really focus on my journey... So much negative self talk. I've been trying to be positive, focused, and implement boundaries with food, family, and friends. Still losing the 60lbs seems like a hurtle some days. I want to show up to my yearly doctor's appt and be able to celebrate my loss. I will see my doctor every 3 mons due to my new hypothyroidism diagnosis - next visit is in Feb. I just want to accomplish this for myself. My workplace (health network) gave 800 of us an opportunity to try Noom for free and helped me finance a treadmill/spinning bike with zero interest. Every excuse I've had the universe has one better. My health coach.. Bless her.. has been so meticulous and overwhelming it has not been encouraging. No fault of her it's just not meshing.

There are people who do actually get offended, but we have to realize that them getting offended is actually tied up with problems THEY have (food = love to them, or they have the need to sabotage others to feel better about themselves, etc). Now, this process of saying no can be more difficult when the people are close, ie: in your own family. But it really is a vital step, both from a weight loss journey perspective as well as just general mental health perspective.

I appreciated you sharing these 5 things, especially the 5th, worrying about offending people. I once at dinner 3 times in 45 minutes. I stopped and ate a hamburger, 5 minutes after that, I stopped by a friends house, they were eating, and they insisted I eat too, so I did to keep from offending them, after 30 minutes I left went to another friend's house around the corner, and once again, they were eating, and insisted I join them. Hard to believe, but all of that just for fear of offending someone. I also believe the mental aspect is very important, having done some congnitive skills therapy, which everyone could probably benefit from.

We choose a place to go (we are currently walking The Great Wall of China. With each milestone you are sent an encouraging postcard, you are part of a team, and you are sort of held accountable for how far you walk. For me, just knowing that my family and I are doing something healthy together is a win-win. At the end of the journey, you receive a medal in the mail. It is really fun!
