I actually prefer that the subtitles say the same thing I hear, I learned english with subtitles and you get the meaning of the words by the context. If I hear some words and read something different, most of the time, my brain is going to not register the words I heard and only focus on the subtitles I read. That way I don't learn so It doesn't help me at all
"Get your man upstairs on the case" is the best variation of "pray for me" I've ever heard. Also, it's was a good detail for Roy to already be stiff while draped over the ladder. When Caz touches his neck and starts lamenting, I thought he was going to say something about his pulse, despite the player character having thick gloves/no way to feel for one. But they put some thought into it!

GOSH I am LOVING this already~! I'm excited to see where it goes, and I LOVE the Voice Acting! Keep on Keeping On, and thank you for doing what you do, John~!!
"I've yet to play a game developed by The Chinese Room that I actually liked" I laughed so hard at this bc I was thinking the exact same thing. VTMB is one of my favourite games of all time, which is why it makes me so nervous that they're developing it... but you should absolutely play the original!!!!
Nice shirt , John. This game looks clean . No muddy texture work here. That guy with the stashe working on the crew deck strongly resembles Gary ridgeway, scary!
Voice Acting & Environment Design are absolutely cooked in this! Amazing work on those elements alone! Oil Rig setting for a horror game is inspired & one of the handful of believable avenues to try to emulate the isolation of The Thing in a semi-modern alt setting
Finally have some time to watch this... the voice acting is really good, I was honestly immediately immersed just listening to everyone. These characters talk over each other and interrupt each other and it sounds extremely natural. Video game conversations are typically Character A speaks, Character B speaks, Character C starts to say something and cuts themselves off in an awkward way/with weir inflection because they know they won't finish their line as Character B will interrupt once you press the A button. You know? And it's fine in games really, but it also makes ones like these with good acting/direction really stand out. Ignore me, lol theater kid AND a writer. But this is great so far!
Ohh I just watched another youtuber play this, but i had no idea you would. I, personally, thought this was a very well done game as far as the dialogue and character building. I was actually invested in them and what happened to them when i typically dont give a damn so good on them for that. Here to strap in for a second watch, interested to see your take on it. Edit: Also want to point out, i enjoy the fact that you take your time and explore everything. Its one of the reasons i enjoy yr channel, besides the sassy attitude 😂
Oil rig lifeboats are pretty intense tho. Some are designed to be able to be dropped from height, like the boat is on a ramp and will slide off the rig in to the water. That’s because usually if an oil rig is being evacuated that means time is of the essence so no slow cables gently lowering you down. You just drop right into the water.
😂I love the little mini-translations in the subtitles. I can't quite understand everything either, but my maternal grandma was Scottish and from Aberdeen, and I've gotten to visit there once, and I love the sound of the accent, it's just really pleasant to me as well as nostalgic. I don't think we had any family who ever worked an oil rig, though. EDIT: And I can vouch for haggis tasting good as well 👍 I visited before I was vegetarian, and I tried some while staying on Skye, I'm not sure if it's prepared differently in different regions (?) but it tasted like meatloaf, I would've eaten it again.
So far I'm liking the atmosphere and tension, they don't show too much. That's good horror. Really nice. And that you keep moving forward into new spaces, progression that goes with the story unfolding. So far so good.
I'm here after the latest shareholder meeting and boy, am I glad. What an atmospheric game. And the dialect is a hoot! Boke is something my ulster scots granda has said - it a rather onomatopoeic word for vomiting. Also, Trots is a terrible nickname to have, considering it's Scotland.
Oh this is SO my bag. I saw it pop up on Mr Kravin's feed but hadn't watched it yet. Super excited to see you play it and really hope it's good! :D EDIT: Man, the acting is so good! It's really immersing me. And those screams D:
I got curious when you were looking at the map (around the 19:33 mark) and googled "cadal" and "beira". The former is Scots for "sleep" and the latter might be a reference to Cailleach, which is another name for Beira, Queen of Winter: "a divine hag and ancestor, associated with the creation of the landscape and with the weather, especially storms and winter." It might be a very linear game but I'm really enjoying your playthrough, as always. I'm a sucker for the "Amnesia meets The Thing" atmosphere (and it reminds a lot of Soma in places).
The creature is sufficiently disturbing, especially at 1:02:23 - the eye is still _moving,_ gleh! - but IMO the platforming before it showed up was way more terrifying. For some reason anything to do with the ocean in video games scares the bejeezus out of me, so even as a linear walking simulator it’s been plenty scary for me so far. I’m down for a playthrough of VtM: Bloodlines, it’s been aaaages since I played that game. If you do decide to play it, one tip that will save your sanity (apart from patching it) is to use the most logical weapon against bosses rather than sticking with whichever one you prefer. Oh, and if you want to bang Jeanette, save first. 😉
Wow look at you playing a horror game that just came out let’s gooo. I believe I’m about half way through my play through so I’ll check yours out soon as I finish.

I can't wait to start your playthrough immediately and rewatch what I've already watched because I enjoy you and your content more. Cheers John. Hope the family is well.
Ooooh I was not aware of this game but I'm loving the atmosphere! Speaking of The Thing, did you hear about the 2002 game's upcoming remaster, John? Do you think you'll play it? I was just recently reminiscing about it. I thought they had some advanced ideas for how old of a game it is. Different systems for fear, trust and infection that all came together to influence your teammates' behavior. I hope the remaster will be worth it!
I actually have a physical copy of the original The Thing, but have never gotten around to playing it since it required some finagling. So I'm excited to check out the remaster, yes!
@@JohnTwolfe I have the original one on CD somewhere too! :) Never played through it but I thought the idea of having to watch out of your teammates becoming compromised sounded fun. Hope the remaster will be worth a playthrough!
This is my first time coming across this channel, and John really reminds me of Ryan Kirby from Fit For A King. Like, face, hair, and voice. Am I the only one seeing it?
i went to sleep watching this video and then I actually had a dream that took place on the oil rig though it had some extra elements that made it a lot less scary, still really cool nonetheless!
Wow I actually really love the voice acting in this so far The VAs knocked it out of the park on this. Also your joke on red and its significance reminds me, since I'm pretty sure you're the one that started the "Red means scary" phrase yeeaaarrrs ago (or at least I like to think that you started/popularized it), I'll be watching RUclipsrs/Streamers that are completely outside of the Horror genre of games - like I'm talking 90% plays Destiny 2 type of content creators - and I'll hear them drop the line "Red means scary" during a mission with red lights, and I swear I probably looked like the Leo pointing meme lol. I could be wrong, but it brings me joy to think that a phrase that you started has transcended the horror/"Harshly Critical" community
"The chinese room, a British video game developer" I wish it kept going, like, "a british video game developer who originally came from america, but they were technically born in canada-''
Played this through the game pass, and while it was a nice little experience, I can't help but feel it's still held back by a lot of Chinese Room's usual shortcomings. It feels like a bit of a missed opportunity to not utilize the oil rig's interconnectedness to make the game less linear, but I guess that would also require the Chinese Room to make an actual game instead of their usual walking sims. Looking forward to seeing your playthrough of it though, it's always so nostalgic when you're playing a horror game!
Yeah, they've nailed the immersion, visual design and voice work here. It's exceptional but there's the usual painful lack of actual "gameplay", exploration and everything that comes with that.
I saw this game pop off on youtube but wasn't in a rush to see it really, but now learning it's a Chinese Room game, I'm definitely curious. Really like their stuff. Everybody's Gone to the Rapture is among my favourite games.
honestly you can get a bit grumpy about that ladder sequence as that seemed janky or a bit broken. I also agree with you that if a game has a right or left click icon for quick time events they should really color code them to help identify them at a glance (they can pick whatever color they want even as long as they are consistent with the ones they pick.)
So far I am loving this game? I always find oil rigs to be a scary environment and the fact they have human models in this makes me feel a lot more immersed.

liking this so far! the visual, voice acting, sound and pacing are all nice. i agree with you that the less reading makes it more immersive, prefer this than the long notes explaining lore. looking forward to see more! also my phone randomly died yesterday, still isn't fixed so i've been bummed out but i was awaiting your upload and this cheers me up. thank you for the video, john! :]
Barely 3 minutes in and I already loved the Soundtrack
GOSH I am LOVING this already~! I'm excited to see where it goes, and I LOVE the Voice Acting! Keep on Keeping On, and thank you for doing what you do, John~!!
Wow, I haven’t thought about Monstrum in ages. Was a pretty fun game from what I remember. And I do get similar vibes from this game so far.
Monstrum was excellent, I only watched playthroughs though, I was too scared to play it 😂
I purposely didn’t watch anyone else hoping you would play this game so happy you are.
"I've yet to play a game developed by The Chinese Room that I actually liked" I laughed so hard at this bc I was thinking the exact same thing. VTMB is one of my favourite games of all time, which is why it makes me so nervous that they're developing it... but you should absolutely play the original!!!!
The sassiness and sarcasm is on 11 this playthrough 😂 I love it and the game too!
Nice shirt , John. This game looks clean . No muddy texture work here. That guy with the stashe working on the crew deck strongly resembles Gary ridgeway, scary!
Alternating between this and Bioshock is going to be such a treat for the next while. Looking forward to seeing how you enjoy the rest of the game!
Voice Acting & Environment Design are absolutely cooked in this! Amazing work on those elements alone! Oil Rig setting for a horror game is inspired & one of the handful of believable avenues to try to emulate the isolation of The Thing in a semi-modern alt setting
love the "think critically" plug at the end.
I'm shocked about how much I'm loving this so far. Excited to see the next video.
So far so good.
im gonna watch these at night before I sleep thanx for uploading
Just saying, as a non native English speaker, I think the subtitles are good 🤷♂️
Edit: English UK it is then... 😅
Would be rather amusing if John had Sinow do a guest star bit as a 'Scottish slang interpreter.' 😂
Rennick’s VA really knocked it out of the park. That sounds like one genuinely pissed off Scotsman.
THANK U FOR TURNING OFF MOTION BLUR BLESS U
This game is short but oh so sweet! Chinese Room is at their best here.
EDIT: Man, the acting is so good! It's really immersing me. And those screams D:
Barnsley mentioned 🎉
wow, what a great first ep! incredible voice acting, too. Thanks John!
I got curious when you were looking at the map (around the 19:33 mark) and googled "cadal" and "beira". The former is Scots for "sleep" and the latter might be a reference to Cailleach, which is another name for Beira, Queen of Winter: "a divine hag and ancestor, associated with the creation of the landscape and with the weather, especially storms and winter."
It might be a very linear game but I'm really enjoying your playthrough, as always. I'm
a sucker for the "Amnesia meets The Thing" atmosphere (and it reminds a lot of Soma in places).
Watched Kravin's playthrough and I'm excited to see your playthrough too
New horror video, let's go!
Wow look at you playing a horror game that just came out let’s gooo. I believe I’m about half way through my play through so I’ll check yours out soon as I finish.
i’m sooooo happy you’re playing this john !!
Been seeing praise for this game and was hoping to see you play it! I've been really enjoying ocean horror recently, so this is shaping up to be quite a treat :D
Oooh 👀🙏🏽
If you play VTM: Bloodlines (the original) I might die of joy
Every time I think of VTMB 2 I want to cry, but the thought of John playing the original brings a (happy) tear to my eye. Just imagining the wonderful sass and snark.
Ok look. I enjoy other lets players and I just started the full through playthrough Hollow posted of this game and I legit watched over 90mins of his upload.
Oooh, the one whose trailer I saw through your twitter...
Looks good - Let's gooooo!
52:20 well that's terrifying
game looks promising so far, super immersive
This is my first time coming across this channel, and John really reminds me of Ryan Kirby from Fit For A King. Like, face, hair, and voice. Am I the only one seeing it?
An oil rig is such a cool setting for a horror game, surprised I haven't seen it before
Following Instruntions is not your strongsuit. Holding both was clearly on the screen EVERY SINGLE TIME.
VTM Bloodlines is awesome! Definitely recommend playing it! It's one of those classic PC games you just love lol
i went to sleep watching this video and then I actually had a dream that took place on the oil rig
though it had some extra elements that made it a lot less scary, still really cool nonetheless!
Wow I actually really love the voice acting in this so far
The VAs knocked it out of the park on this.
I feel like this is some kind of serendipity. Was watching rig 45 and the rig on tv recently so I am kinda into rig horror lol.
They are working their way up to it. They want to make good narratives (which they do) but they need to make more open games.
Yeah, they've nailed the immersion, visual design and voice work here. It's exceptional but there's the usual painful lack of actual "gameplay", exploration and everything that comes with that.
Just so happy to see John still doing let's plays every now & then ^_^
Wdym? This whole channel is him doing let’s plays lol
He posts let's play far more frequently than ever before
YES!! This game is the new best horror game that came out in a while ❤ *in my opinion hehe*
34:10 John almost let his intrusive thoughts win
15:51 I’m just gonna live in ignorance and hope that the second to last Friday Jukebox entry is by Ramones (my fave song by them actually!) even though the title is missing the “I” and it came out in ‘77 ❤
