For those of you who are normal height or taller! I do have an advantage here by shortening the length, but you can apply this practice, too! You'll just need to use full gores instead of wheel pieces. 🧡
I have never heard the term "wheel pieces" before is that your terminology or am I missing something from my textile degree and historical research. Just curious, I love learning new things.
ah Tetris, how useful you are. need to make something, but don't have the yardage? Tetris! live in a small space, but love large wooden furniture? TETRIS!! and dad always said I'd never use those skills😂😂. God, quick gratification is so underrated! especially in historical sewing. great video as always Jacki(e?) .
@@FantasticalFolliesCostuming it really is. Where would we be without tetras. A sad sad world. Good to know. I'll try and remember this time. I've seen it in your chanel bio, but always forget😆. Damn old age.
I use similar shenanigans when piecing patterns with ridiculous yardage together! Nice! They say, "Pastels flatter everyone", but no... I can't wear them, either. I couldn't wear that white blouse, either. My wedding dress had to be ivory, textured, and the neckline had to be away from my face, otherwise it would've been Corpse Bride time. 😂 Which honestly my husband would probably have been OK with. 😂
Hah!! White's not my choice usually for that same reason, lol! But it's better than pastels! Every day I shake my fists at the Victorians for the white wedding dress thing. If I ever get married, it will be in color 🤣🤣 I feel for 'ya!
@@FantasticalFolliesCostuming A lot of people are kind of getting away from the Queen Victoria white wedding dress thing. 😊 I am a very weird shade of pasty white/pale yellow which looks bad with every light color, especially light muted colors.
Very satisfying. One trick I have seen for curved hems is to baste along the edge that you are going to iron up and then use it to gather slightly when you turn the hem up for the finishing hem.
I need that "I like to piece it, piece it" clip randomly inserted every D10 videos I watch... That aside, I loved the finished product and you've found the same thing with pastels that I have - as long as they're not directly at my face, I don't look dead. I'm amused that I have a similar sized piece of linen in a similar colour in my stash. I must also say, every sweater you wore during this video was amazing!
Lol! Glad someone appreciated that bit 😂 And hey--sounds like we could be skirt twinsies! Hah! Thank you! It was so cold while I was filming this 🥶 all hand-knit, too! I only get like, 6 weeks to wear 'em all...
@@FantasticalFolliesCostuming Hah, I'm sitting here wrapped in a blanket on top of my sweatshirt because Canada and expensive lelectric heating :P I definitely could make a skirt out of that but I'm already planning a purple linen victorian walking skirt. I imagine that the blue linen will end up being a lining for some wool somewhere, or maybe a first set of pants. And honestly, when a colour just isn't me, THERE'S DYE. I love me a good tie-dye. I have this really pretty aqua linentha's a bit too light for me and I made a vest and shirt out of it and if I wear a black shirt with hte vest that'll be fine (once I patch the holes somebunny nipped in it) but the plan with the shirt is to either tie dye or geode dye it with black black or just do ombre black with the neck as the darkest part because I discoverd all it takes is an inch and a half of black around a lilac blouse's neckline and suddenly I don't look like death anymore!
@@FantasticalFolliesCostuming As a knitter, I also found my attention drawn to the awesome sweaters you were wearing in this video! If you ever need an idea for a filler video sometime, I certainly wouldn't mind watching you talk about your hand-knit sweaters :)
I first learned to sew from my quadriplegic aunt and learned that if she could sew at a high level with limited use of one hand, there was no excuse for me. Then I was mentored some by some ladies in their 80s and 90s while in highschool. They always said only a fool lays fabric to cut according to the instructions. So I learned to lay it their way. I often had enough left over to make something for one of the kids.
LOL go for it! 🤣 In retrospect, it definitely was a little much for this skirt, but unfortunately, it's rained every day since then, so I couldn't re-shoot 🥴
I always love your skirt videos! There all do able projects for a beginner. It's also great to see some of the various patterns and vendors that are out there. 🧡💙
Thank you!! Glad you enjoyed! Scroop's patterns are pretty good. They really only do 18th c and Edwardian, but the patterns so far have had the least amount of weirdness for me.
I made the Scroop Fantail skirt a couple of summers ago in the "modern" length. I wore it to work and it has a lovely "swoosh" factor but I got SO frustrated with the snaps popping open all the time and revealing my undies that I ended up putting a zip in instead!
I was DEFINITELY running into that a bit when I filmed the reveal. 😣 I dunno what it is with snaps...but I'm glad I'm not the only one who has issues with them! I may be driven to the button route after I alter the waist...🤐
Thanks, I learned a new term from this video: wheel pieces. 😃 Google struggled when I tried to research the term, lol. 😄 It's mentioned in "The Medieval Tailor" somewhere it seems (but I must read the whole book to find it). 🤣 I know about godets though. 🙂
Where do you live? Because I want to be your neighbor and maybe we could like rent a little studio in between our two houses so that we could hang out together together because you are so friggin funny and wonderful!

It's not my term. It's a real thing. I picked it up when researching my kirtle years ago, probably the MTA, but don't quote me on that.

Yes!! It's like the magic solution to everything! 🤣🤣 Thanks! And it's Jacki. I took the "e" off in 8th grade and never went back 😆

Yep, that's a great technique for curved hems!
The skirt is beautiful but oh man does the knitwear in this video steal the show. Everything you wear is so pretty!!
Thank you so much! I've knit so many sweaters, and I only get about six weeks to wear them, so I try to get as much use out of 'em as possible 😆
Agreed - I particularly liked the purple gap-sleeved sweater!

Yes. Yes one does very much want to understitch the pocket, and one wants to do it at that stage, not after the fact. 🤦♀️

Dang do I love your sweater collection. Sooo jealous
Thank you so much!! They're all hand knit! I don't get to wear them very often 😓

Lol thanks! 😁 And thanks for watching!!
Many or the trim and braid patterns on these skirts conceal the piecing.
Always a great method!!
