Orioles Announcer Says About Ump "You Kind of Embarrass Your Profession" After Ejecting Ramón Urías

- Опубликовано: 22 апр 2023
- During a game between the Detroit Tigers and Baltimore Orioles, a couple pitches were called for strikes that were off the plate. Orioles 3rd baseman Ramón Urías strikes out and tossed his helmet and elbow pad. The home plate umpire took exception and threw the infielder out of the game.

That isn’t just an announcer. That’s hall of famer Jim Palmer, one of the best right handed pitchers that ever lived.
He was good at pitching. That's it.
Palmer was a great pitcher, no doubt. But no pitcher in MLB history benefitted as much from an elite defense playing behind him, including Brooks Robinson and Mark Belanger for the vast majority of his career.

@@MattW30356 that’s great
So we're giving the announcers a pass for 0:38? I never saw the umpire call that a strike but you know what - announcers said he called it a strike, lol.
I hope to see the non-renewal of the umpires' contract when their CBA expires.
Nope. I hate, loathe, when announcers think they know what they're talking about. The umpire was walking away, and the batter TURNED TO UMPIRE and said something, then he got ejected. The announcers don't know what the batter said....so the announcers have no clue what they're talking about. I hate when announcers do that.
'They didn't come to see you' is a sentiment that too many umps need to be reminded of.
Except it has nothing to do with the right call, so it's actually irrelevant
It has to due with the ump's ego which led him to throw out a player over nothing, which is exactly what the announcer is referring to when he said he embarrassed his profession, so it literally could not be more relevant to the video? Yes, the ump made bad calls but the comment was about umps who toss players over the slightest things that they perceive as 'showing them up'.
He is in fact saying, "I can't be wrong. How dare you disagree with my call!" A classic case of power tripping..
It wasn't even your classic show up the umpire behavior.
This is why I say umps are soft
You mean the hitter? Yes, this hitter was power tripping. Correct 😂
title should have read "hall of fame pitcher calls ump......"
I was thinking the same thing.
Title should have read "Announcer does not understand the rules of ejection"
These umpires should be fined for this type of behavior. There needs to be some type of accountability.
Doubtful, with how much power their union has. Accountability isn’t something they have to maintain, unfortunately.
The best the mlb can do is nothing lol.
I thought the nfl was bad. Holy caw and were 25 games into the season. Scherzer gets thrown out for using too much rosin. This guy gets thrown out for being disgusted cuz the ump doesn't know the strike zone and nothing happens to the umps. He will prob ump a game in the world series.
The calls were close and I think he had the right calls. You try to ump
Umps did their jobs, so no. If you throw your hat, it's an auto-eject
Not just any announcer. That was Hall of Famer Jim Palmer.
So the announcers got it wrong. The first pitch they showed was called a ball 1. Not called a strike. Yes the last pitch was a called strike 3. Player got thrown out after being warned not to throw his equipment. It you see. The umpire gives him a warning after the bat and helmet
Tossing your equipment quite lightly toward your own dugout happens hundreds if not thousands of times every season, and you never see a guy get thrown out for it unless the ump is a punk like this.
Jim Palmer, one of the greatest living HOFers(he'll tell ya himself) calls em as he sees em.
Don't forget that Palmer loved those calls as a pitcher. Palmer is just being a homie now that he's in the booth. And batters are ignoring the "foul it off if it's close" technique.
@Don H argument is not about the call as calls get blown it's the human element but it's his reaction to ramons reaction that is the problem

They should have had the robo umps in MLB years ago. Its incredibly stupid that everyone else can see the strike zone but they can't.
@@huntermorris7421 There's an unwritten baseball code. You simply don't argue balls and strikes where- as a player- you demonstrate to an ump where you think the ball was. You disagree with a call? That's fine. Listen to the players and they will say something like, "That wasn't there", or they will ask, "Where was that blue?". Say something like "That was a $%@& foot outside" or worse, draw a line in the dirt, it's an automatic ejection. As an umpire, I have no problem with coaches and players saying either "Not your pitch!" or saying "Right around there!", but tell me that the ball is a foot outside when it's literally over the corner of the plate and you are gone.

Technically, tossing equipment (while also compounding the infraction by kvetching a called strike three) is grounds for immediate ejection.
If you’re too sensitive yes
Technically, I'm glad you are not a major league umpire.
That Orioles announcer is hall of fame pitcher Jim Palmer
Has no one else noticed that in the breakdown of the two pitches, the first pitch (showed from overhead) that the announcer referred to as “strike 2” was actually a ball in the first, and was called a ball. The actual called strike 2 was a pitch earlier (but not shown from overhead), and the computer showed it as a strike.
The called strike 3 was a really close strike and the computer system on another site ruled it within the margin of error.
fyi .. you dont need the other site .. it shows it here too .. the open circle is a ball the solid circle is a strike (within margin of error etc etc).
Are you saying that the Orioles producer/director pulled up the wrong replay IN THE MOMENT? This was not patched together the next day.
@@billredmond2038 Yes. Now I don’t say that to criticize those guys either. But we need to be fair to the umpire. There was one pitch barely outside (strike 3). Strike 2 was a legit strike. The announcers weren’t fair in their analysis of the strike calls using the wrong footage.
Now what we don’t know is what was said to cause the umpire to use the quick hook. Without the benefit of sound, it seemed a bit premature, but more goes on than most of us are privy to.

@Old Ben Kenobi I don't need to be a master chef to know when food tastes like shit. Quit being an idiot.
The pitch they showed was actually called a ball by the umpire and the computerized ump. The pitches that were called strikes by the umpire were also called strikes by the computerized umpire. Local announcer bias? Also the ump warned him after he threw the helmut; the rules require an ejection when player throws equipment after being warned.
Jim Palmer as an announcer will admit whether someone is a ball or strike, whether or not the batter agrees or not. He is pretty fair on his judgements. The umpire should not have thrown him out anyway. Umpires need to read the room and understand he is going to be frustrated when two balls were called strikes and struck out. He wasn't losing his temper or going to ump's face either. I have seen people get thrown out slower when getting into the ump's face and screaming at them than Urius getting thrown out. Not a good look for this umpire.
The umpire actually ejected him for throwing equipment. Notice the point and warning when the batter threw his bat and helmet at 0:21. Then the batter threw his elbow guard that's why he got tossed at 0:23.
He warned the batter toward his back. Dumb unpiring.
0:38 "there's strike 2" - must be that new uncalled strike I've heard so much about OR it was a ball and called a ball, lol.

Two best jobs in the world; home plate umpire and weatherman. Never get fired for being wrong 60% of the time. Try that being an air traffic controller!!
First of all, if anyone believes the the rectangle that is superimposed on the TV screen is the real strike zone they are mistaken. Home plate is 17 inches wide. The rule book at every level says a strike is when any part of the ball touches that plate or goes "through" the plate and is from the bottom of the knee (wherever the hell that can be precisely determined under a uniform pant) to the a midpoint between the shoulders and the top of the uniform pants when a batter takes a normal stance......that rectangle never ever changes on a tv broadcast. Plus the rectangle is always slightly offset because the tv camera is offset to the pitcher. There are 18 different strike zones to start the game and that expands as players are substituted. In most games that means the HP umpire is responsible for at least 21 to 24 different strike zones. The rectangle is simply wrong on every batter because it is never adjusted. Even if players are the same height their stances are usually different. Second, the ejection was not for arguing balls and strikes it was for the way Urias "discarded" his batting equipment. BY RULE, there is no leeway here and MLB takes the adjudication of all rules big and small VERY seriously. Finally, if you think an electronic strike zone is going to make things better, you should read the research on the electric strike zone currently being used in the minor leagues......the radar that is the basis for the electronic zone can ONLY measure the middle of the ball.....and if you don't understand what that means you don't understand the strike zone as it has been called for more than a century......it narrows the zone by as much as 3 inches....arguments in baseball are part of the game...
Throwing equipment is the reason for ejection here - you can see the ump point when he throws off the first piece to warn him, then runs him after it happens again. Still not great, but that at least explains it a bit
the equipment wasn't "thrown". it was dropped. very common for third out strike-out batter to leave his equipment at the plate, batboy/girl comes and gets it, and someone brings his glove and cap. total overreaction by the plate ump. and i'm sure the psychology crowd would be able to explain how his ejection of the batter is a self-revelation that he knows he either missed those two calls or called them wrong intentionally. we rednecks would simply say he's covering his ass..... (three years in the eighth grade; how can i be wrong...?😏😏
The ump reminds me of the first boss you meet in a video game, where you show up live 5 levels lower than recommend and with no required equipment but still win. He looks and acts like it lol
Obviously this umpire went to the Joe West and Angel Hernandez school of umpiring.
lets not forget c.b. bucknor
The announcers are wrong. The pitch was not that far off the plate. There is no context as to whether the umpire was giving both teams that corner all game. The video clearly shows the batter deliberately throw his bat, then deliberately throw his helmet, both of which by themselves are an ejection in high school, but are warnable in the majors, and the umpire promptly and clearly gave the batter the warning per league directives. The batter then continued to throw his drama queen hissy fit by throwing even more stuff after the warning, at which point he disqualified himself from the game, as the refs in the NFL like to say. Sit down, son.
I totally disagree with you. Played pro ball and those were both outside. The player did not show up the ump in my opinion. He was just frustrated.
You need you your eyes AND your brain checked
@@TheFrenchPug If you were umpiring, you'd let them throw their shirt and their pants and their jock strap before you handle your business. Ridiculous.
Pat Hoberg needs to teach how to properly set behind the plate. You don't center yourself on the plate you have to be proactive and follow the catcher so you can get he best view of the pitch. When you are setup on the right hand site behind the catcher and the catcher slides to the left you will never get a good view of a pitch.
Forget interviewing players and coaches on strategy. The media needs to start interviewing umpires and calling them out on their blown calls and egos.
I love how the show "strike two". That pitch was ball one. Close Call Sports has the figures for location of the pitch. The real strike two was well within the zone. Strike three was outside the zone but within the buffer margin of error accepted by MLB. So according to MLB both strike calls were correct

The problem started when the players couldn't "argue balls and strikes" as a zero tolerance policy. Something respectful like" no that way outside, or you missed that one Angel, without getting thrown out. If they are making a big fuss by all means toss em. Being able to hold the ump accountable even with just a few words makes a difference in the whole game.

A few days ago the ump vs the dodgers was absolutely terrible an embarrassment
To end with "not particularly classy there" talking bout the umps, is choice to hear
One of the pitches they show when reviewing this sequence was correctly called a ball by the umpire. The umpire missed one call which was on the margins, then the player was ejected for throwing equipment after being warned. Pretty much a textbook ejection based on the rules.
The pitch the announcers said was Strike 2----- WAS CALLED A BALL. What are they watching? Third strike was close enough for a strike.
we don't know what the player said. he may have cursed him out. technically, it's automatic ejection for arguing balls and strikes, this is the way it is supposed to be called all the time, but they umpires are usually a lot more lenient. as far as the strike or ball, yeah, it was outside, but as long as the umpire is consistent for both teams then it's fine. those pitches would have been uncontested strikes in the 90's with Maddux and Glavine on the mound and if a player in the 90's did what Urias did he would have gotten thrown out as well. the third strike was CLOSER than the second - the hitter needs to realize this and protect the plate and try to foul it off. my biggest gripe is the umpires no longer use the chest protector and line up off-center over the catcher's shoulder. from that angle (and at the high speeds and movement from high spin rates pitchers have today and the catchers' framing abilities), it makes it harder for them to call that a ball because the catcher's glove and head are blocking his view of that corner of the plate. when we get to robo umpires these will be balls, but then the offense and game time will increase a lot so don't be surprised if MLB decides to help even things out for the pitchers and increases the size of home plate the way they did the bases to create LESS offense OR if MLB starts calling the balls at the letters a strike again.
I was sitting 17 rows up behind the Orioles dugout and could see those pitches from where I was sitting. The throws were also pretty low and it was obvious those were terrible calls from even that far away. Batter didn't do much except for highlighting how shitty the ump's eyesight is.
Legitimate question, what should the ump do instead? Urias tossing his equipment off at home plate and challenging the ump's authority. It was a questionable call, but honestly I think this is a case of good catcher framing more than anything. Catcher framing is one aspect of baseball that would be eliminated with robo umps.
The batter gets warned for an equipment violation and then proceeds to throw another piece of equipment? That's an automatic ejection.
👓 here you go ump, you need these
That wasn't the strike two pitch that was shown from the overhead. It's a disingenuous attack on the umpire. Also, there was a warning for throwing equipment and he continued to throw more equipment, necesitating the ejection.

Any specific reason why decision about strike/ball cannot be "automated"? Looks like system know right away either ball was in or outside zone. Why to leave this decision to old man eyes?
A few reasons. First, there are a few systems that are being tested right now that can call balls and strikes. They mostly work but have had some mess ups, even an ejection for arguing against the computer. The biggest issue is defining what a strike is. That may seem silly, but they tried a rulebook strike zone with the system and it was hated by players. What is being called now is not quite the rulebook strike zone.
Gotta love Jim Palmer HOF
Umpires should be made to draw line on the plate to show where the pitch was when they throw someone out. Then you could compare the actual pitch placement with the line they thought the ball was on. LOL.... "uh, I thought it was over here by 8 more inches". "No buddy... we got you on tape now...."
They've made all those other changes. They have replay to get all the calls right that they can. Why not electronic balls and strikes? Why not get all the pitches right?
There would be a review every other pitch. Game would never end.
@@TheFrenchPug They don't review them now and the umps miss 25% or more. No reason to ever review electronic balls and strikes. It's very accurate now.

The ump has a tough job. One he signed on for and is well paid. He is also part of the game and deserves criticism and praise as is appropriate. Blowing the call on a pitch can be forgiven. Doubling down with an ejection stings for a long time. He needs thicker skin than that.

Yeah, that's Jim Palmer. Excellent pitcher, sketchy color man. Very opoinionated. Almost every sentence contains " you know".
That's a very sensitive Ump. Somebody book a Spa day with a pedicure so he feels better. 🤣
This is an example of the announcers not knowing the rules, regardless of their HOF status. When the batter (softly) threw 2 items to the ground after the strike 3 call, the umpire gave him an "equipment warning" (0:22). The warning means that if you throw any other equipment to the ground, you are ejected by rule (umpire HAS to eject you)-doesn't have anything to do with "showing up the umpire" or whatever.
As for the quality of the strike calls, strike 1 was swinging, and strike 2 (0:03) was on the corner and was correctly called a strike (note that the supposed replay at 0:38 of "strike 2" was actually video of "ball 1"). Strike 3 shows as a ball on the telecast, but is (surprisingly) within the margin of computer error (+/- 1" on either corner)-so maybe it was a bad call but maybe it wasn't. See ruclips.net/video/Gq-whWa6Pno/видео.html for a more unbiased look at this ejection. Oftentimes, announcers are just as biased as players, keep in mind.
When the helmet goes off in the vincinity of home plate like that it is an equipment violation and an automatic ejection! These broadcasters are biased.

guess what happens if you let players act unprofessional; whining, bitching, crying about strikes and balls. they'll continue to do it more. they need to be professional. that ejection wasn't about bringing attention to himself as the ump. it was about setting a standard and I fully agree with that sentiment.
If the player delays the game or physically assaults someone, he should be penalized in whatever way the league dictates.
If it simply is clear that the player disagrees with the call, quit being a victim, ump, and take your medicine.
The players get paid to do a good job, or be told by spectators, reporters, coaches, and other players when they suck.

The ignorance of some on this channel. The first overhead pitch was the ball in the dirt. It was called a ball indicated by no "Strike call" by the umpire. The second one was a little outside. However MLB rules state that throwing of equipment (in this case the helmet) is a warning. Which he was given. The second is an automatic ejection. How dare the umpire enforcement rules. I get so tired of hearing people say (nobody came to see you umpire). All he did was enforce the rule that MLB made.

How does the League continue to put up with this horrendous umpiring. Umpires union must be stronger than the Teamsters. No way an average guy could suck at his job that bad and still be employed.
Expect this when you give the umpires more power over the game.
Need to start walking out of the stadium, after demanding a refund for your ticket fee! If enough teams start to feel the pinch they will put pressure on the league to fire these bad umpires.
