- Today, I am excited to present my first official music video! The Battle has always been a favorite of mine - especially the moment when the sober beginning grows into the main theme - it fills me with shivers. When I was younger, I thought it would be the coolest thing in the world if I could play this on my harp, so I gave it a shot. I was content with just developing the main theme at first and stopped when I reached the more difficult and ambiguous parts, but I realized that this is too good to lose! So after about two years I completed it.
This is my process: listen closely and figure it out. Maybe it’s my pride, but I love to challenge myself to not look at a score, but simply use my ears and pluck the strings till I hit the right one lol. I often play along with the recording to listen for anything that doesn’t match up - to get it as exact as possible. The hardest task is to decipher layered or unclear voicing, or when the orchestra reaches an insanely high climax with nearly every instrument involved. I sit there and think, “Alright Joanna, how can we play what we hear with only two hands?” And I generally have no idea. But that’s ok because we figure it out eventually and make it work!
I have a hard time believing that you can’t play this or that on the harp. Of course there are some things, but my greatest delight is to challenge myself with what appears impossible, and conquer it. That’s why I’m so excited to share with you this video: the first of my mountain of ideas.

This is beautiful!! I love how you arranged it by ear for harp, even when it's a full orchestra. (So cool to hear your process! I know that's a challenge. It's impressive to even do one minute or page. I've tried it once or twice and didn't finish.) I used to play the main theme of this on the violin, by ear.

@@joannalauer25 Aww, you're welcome! I bet, haha! I'm impressed because I tried it and it made my brain hurt. I didn't get very far! And it was an easy piece in comparison--I think it was "Beyond the Forest" from the second Hobbit movie (way back when). It must take SUCH dedication and hard work to finish something so huge and complex, as you said.
I did "The Battle" by ear for my string ensemble, but only the main theme. My violin teacher suggested we arrange an excellent soundtrack medley. We had to write the theme solely by ear, and she arranged four part harmonies. Very cool.
