This is exactly how a mechanical clock works - the weight is replaced with a spring, and the "spinning" stick is replaced with a flywheel. Very old grandfather clocks indeed had weights hanging down that powered the flywheel.
Heh, I just said basically the same thing. I brought it a tiny step further, and debunked this as a DaVinci "invention" based on the fact that the weighted clock was invented 170ish years before DaVinci was born. He just repurposed the tech to spin a stick instead of clock hands.
I think it would be a fun project that could keep me alive if I were in a survival situation. Not the spit itself, but the something to put my mind to and the feeling of accomplishment having built it.
In a scenario where I'd be living in a permanent camp I'd do this but it seems a bit too much work if I'm gonna be somewhere temporarily. Also, sitting by the fire and turning the meat over yourself has its own charm.
Yeah, but sitting there turning the meat wastes a lot of time. I guess it depends on how established your camp is. I'm thinking that while this meats auto turning you could completely restock the wood you just used for the fire.
If you turn the meat all over yourself you'll end up pretty greasy I would not recommend it. Especially if the grease is hot, you could burn yourself. Safety first.
Forest survival games don't tend to have 50 feet of rope, and when you are starving to death, making a bunch of grass rope isn't high on the priority list. Shit, even if they had the rope they don't generally have food. Certainly not enough of it to invest the time and labor into making an automatic rotisserie.
I mean, perpetual motion doesn’t exist. It will run out of energy due to frictional losses much sooner than with the hanging rock falling due to gravity. Just put more and longer restrictions in place and it will last longer
@PayterX I dont think you understand what they're saying. They aren't describing a perpetual motion device. They are describing an easy-reset mechanism. You just set up the pulling string on the other side of the spit, then when your rock bottoms out, you simply move the rock to the other string, and it runs the entire process in the other direction, which causes the first line to reset itself. It is not a perpetual motion machine because it requires human labor to reset the kinetic energy that powers the device. It is just quicker and easier than having to manually re-wind the string every time the rock gets to the bottom.
I was thinking something similar, only loop the same rope back to the bottom of the existing “timer” post. Same idea just using one rope. I’d be interested to see if either or both of those ideas work!
@@ardgeighw5174 late reply, but yes you are most likely right. I probably misunderstood it, being as I often see people proposing elaborate perpetual motion schemes
If the line that goes to the big rock leaves horizontally it will even out the force coming from the escapment mechanism and won't be pulling the spit up off the supports. You can do this by redorecting the rope arpund a pulley or smooth branch. The sticks you added increase the diameter of the spit meaning it will spin slower but with more torque, this worked well and could be amplified by using bigger sticks or by having a smaller diameter on the virticle entrapment stick. Great build, bravo. Would be fun to do on a large spit roast pig or lamb for a party
This is a very amazing and clever idea. It reminds me of some stuff you would see on gilligan's island lol, thank you for sharing.I will definitely be trying to build one of these on my next camping trip
If it is "overpowered", you can whittle down the stick where the rope is wound. This lowers the torque proportional to the diameter change, and increases running time (total turns).
Yes, but it would not slow down the rest. So your chicken might turn a lot slower, but you won't get more time out of it. If you want more time and turn the chicken slower, make the spinning pivot thinner. It can only release however much rope it takes to make a half turn, so by making the pivot thinner it's releasing less rope. The rock comes down slower, the spit turns less.
the diameter of your spit and the vertical spinning stick will give you the "gear ratio". so adding the extra twigs on the stick also helped achieving the desired "roasting" revolutions 😁
That's correct, but using a thinner vertical spinning stick would not only slow the spit rotation, but also slow down the descent of the big rock. Really, the main question is: how much rope do you want to release on every half turn? Once you know that, find a stick (desired half turn slack * 2) in circumference.
Neat construction, theoretically if the rock builds up enough momentum to be caught properly you could make it more efficient by using four "braking" sticks rather than two and double the time the rotisserie operates, the two extra sticks may not even need to be braced, just driven into the ground.
I'm imagining the next version with a lever at the bottom of the big rock that releases a stream of water to put out the fire and drop another rock onto a bell to tell you it's done ;)
I don't know what he uses(looks like oak or ash tree) but often fast growing trees are straight when they are young. eg. Robinia and hazel nut grows straight as well. Mostly the new shouts from an older busch.
i was thinking the same, where I grew up even beech tree was rarely straight without knots turning direction along the length, and now I'm near an oak forest it's even worse. feels like living in canada is the ikea version of bushcraft rofl
If you did this again, could you skip de-barking the posts the rock wraps around? And instead of boring any holes could you use two crossbeams and lash a square to hold the twisting post? And maybe with a rock pile to anchor the rotating base? Did the rope try to yank the spit towards the tree or was that not an issue? VERY impressive project, Leo was ahead of his time!

Why do people keep acting like this is some major build? You need 8 sticks, 2 holes, 1 big rock, 1 small rock, and some rope. It shouldn't take more than about 20 minutes to build this. Most of it is just shoving sticks in the mud. Really, the only part of this build that is a little hard is making that dovetail, and customizing a stick to fit in it perfectly.
As clever as it seems in this form, this is actually a weighted clock. I don't think DaVinci invented the weighted clock. You should actually be able to tell time with this setup. I don't mean like "It's 4 o'clock". I mean (original wrap count - remaining wrap count) * average time between spins. It won't be swiss precision, but if you know you need to cook that chicken for 20 minutes, you could get real close to knowing if that amount of time has passed.
I just did some quick research, and the weighted clock was invented approx. 170 years before DaVinci was born. So, I'm going to say "myth busted" DaVinci did not invent this. He just repurposed almost 200 year old technology (by his time).

The "silliness."
How ironic. 😅
Just got to make sure the none of the children get clocked in he head by the stone flail part.
really appreciate you showing the spit working and how it works before going into the entire build...
So if you get whacked unconscious by that spinning stone, by the time you wake up, dinner's ready. 👌
But you definitely won't have an appetite with all the concussion nausea and worse from a head injury like that 🤕

This is awesome! If I'm not mistaken, this is what they call an escapement mechanism like what they use in clocks.
Always a pleasure to watch your videos ! Started with the basics knots, seeing them in practice is great ! 😁
What a kewl useage of the auto rotating spit! Thank you for showing this!
If you make the mechanism 2 sided you can just move the rock back and forth, and you have a self re-winding mechanism.
Ya that’s a really good idea, you’d just have to switch the connection between the rope 1 and 2 which is simple. And life the rock.
I mean, perpetual motion doesn’t exist. It will run out of energy due to frictional losses much sooner than with the hanging rock falling due to gravity. Just put more and longer restrictions in place and it will last longer

That is what I expect to see in an episode of Gilligan's Island. It even looks like a zany contraption. Only yours WORKS for real.
What are you trying to say - you can't make a radio out of a coconut and some sticks? Don't come around here shattering my warped sense of reality. 😂
If it is "overpowered", you can whittle down the stick where the rope is wound. This lowers the torque proportional to the diameter change, and increases running time (total turns).
That looks really fun and satisfying to build. I think increasing the stick bundle's diameter on the end of the spit would slow the rotation.

If you copy the rock weighting system on the other side and hang a lighter rock in there you could let it wind itself back up, just swap the rocks.
This could be used for so many things. I think I'll build an automatic loom in the wilderness 😂
I think you can add more veridical sticks for the rock to wrap around.
Awesome. It could run indefinitely if the rope would form a belt which is powered by a water wheel/turbine
Gears wold make this so much simpler.
