This whole video is so precious. I’m a tenor player and I hold a special place in my heart for all the elderly. Seeing these men past the prime of their life put my skills to shame is nothing short of thrilling.
I can't stop commenting! That magnificent Arnett Cobb solo, 38.20...44.00.....unbelievable. He's playing with giants of jazz and pulls pure gold out of the bag. When I get to the Pearly Gates and there's some doubt about letting me in, I shall mention this solo.....the Gates will silently swing open!!
wow Jaquet reproduces his famous solo on Flyin Home....he most imitated sax solo in history. Bud Johnson is a revelation, and Dexters tone is a religious experience! Cobb the all around classic swing/honkin tenor.. Great
Wooow...such a 5 Great Bosses of Tenor Sax!!!!!! Great concert, 40 years after that's really Great Jazz!!! And 8 fantastic musicians, the 5 tenormen and the 3 rhythm sectionists!!! All of them, absolutely Greats!!! Thanks a lot for sharing this video!!! Really fantastic concert!!!
Having been at Jazz concerts/clubs, whilst living in Europe during the 70’s, i must kick myself for having missed out on this extraordinaire (raw) tenorists battle at the famous North sea Jazz festival. These 5 guys are incredible, and with the great pianist Hank Jones, setting the pace. I’ve grown up with their fabulous Jazz music, it’s like flowing thru my veins. And folks i’ve been extremely lucky to have experienced this Jazz-art from the mid-50’s onwards, whilst an teenagers, and being incredibly overwhelmed with the superb bop/hard-bop phenomena. So here we have those Giants from yesteryears and what we are hearing now is by far the best Jazz-music ever, then and certainly now! Watching this, 40 years after the event, i can honestly say that i am thankful that we have YT whereby this music (hopefully) will be accessed by the current generation to hear what real, beautiful music, coming from the heart (emotional) Jazz, is all about. Lets enjoy this ripper & Cheers to all!
william cherry Good to hear that you had that same incredible experience, William. Living during the 70’s in Holland i met many coloured Jazz expats (settling in Northern-Europe in the 50’s/60’s/70’s), before returning to Australia. Apart from their ART being appreciated these unique Jazz-Artist felt completely accepted as human beings. Away from all the nasty segregations etc. Good talking to you. Enjoy & Cheers!
Regarding your words about YT, my family is not really musical and I never developed a true liking for any particular genre until I heard Take Five for the first time on this very platform, about two years ago. Since then I've listened to the old greats of jazz non stop, and I just started to learn the alto Sax. I wish I could've seen heroes of mine like Dexter Gordon perform live, but this is as good as it gets.
@@Danox94 Yes, the were the best of times and i was very fortunate to have met/seen some of the best Jazz Artists, during those remarkable years. Wishing you the very best with your alto-playing. Sonny Stitt, Frank Morgan, Charlie Parker are among my favourites. Good talking too you. Dig & Cheers!
Angels from Heaven.....how else can you explain such wonderful, mesmeric music? Arnett Cobb.....virtually crippled but turned up, mouth to reed and utter joy comes out. This vid shows the difference sax players show playing the same instrument........2019music?...no comment.
That is class! Swinging and soul will always make the listeners happy they came. These guys are gone but people like Scott Hamilton. Harry Allen and especially James Carter keep this vibe going. Also Jesper Thilo in Copenhagen!
So incredible Battle of Amazing Tenors and Memorabile Tenormen!!! Really Wonderful and Amazing performance on stage!!! Thanks for this incredible video!!!
In Flying Home Dexter is beginning his solo by quoting from Illinois Jacquet original solo,(001:02) paying his respect to the master. Great to see the very underrated Budd Johnson. This is a REAL Supersax!
vova47 Bud was not, as you say, underrated. He was one of the main be-bop Jazz artists. He didn’t travel that extensively to Europe, as some of the others. Great player, who passed away about 5 years after this fantastic concert. Enjoy & Cheers!
Thanks for sharing the full registration of this wonderful tenor battle. I was in the audience back in 1979 as 17 year old Jazz lover and it inspired me to start learning to play tenor saxophone a few years later. It would be nice if you could mention the correct songs and featured artists in the above video text. I think this is the correct list of played songs: 1 - 00:02:50 - Lady Be Good - Solo's Jacquet, Cobb, Tate, Johnson, Gordon. Jones, 4x4 2 - 00:21:20 - Laura - Feature Dexter Gordon 3 - 00:28:34 - Darn That Dream - Feature Illinois Jacquet 4 - 00:33:05 - Yesterdays - Feature Budd Johnson 5 - 00:38:09 - Deep Purple - Feature Arnett Cobb 6 - 00:43:43 - She's Got It - Feature Buddy Tate, Arnett Cobb 7 - 00:51:24 - Satin Doll - Feature Hank Jones 8 - 00:58:40 - Flying Home - Solo's Johnson, Gordon, Jacquet 9 - 01:11:09 - The Hagues Blues - Solo's Jones, Tate, Johnson, Gordon, Jacquet

Great stuff here. I'm a huge fan of Dexter (I'm just gonna nip off stage for a little 'pick me up)' Gordon et all but to hear Arnette Cobb swinging the blues .......what .a complete delight!

SAW HERSCHEL EVANS' ghost in the back swaying in a breeze of nostalgia. . . This swing shift was from where the HONKERS, who R&R lerized R&B, mid 50s, really took off: Joe Houston (a tx name ..,),McNeely, Red Prysock, Sil Austin, Earl Bostic, Lynn Hope, Noble Watts, many others ... And the insurrectionist chord revolutionaries who hated their guts of this mellow-yellow, over-emphasized (-metastazied ?) monotony swing that had relocated from the big plain state to the more urban K.C. There a new musical era was first created and conceived (McShann s band + a certain individual in it) before it rehappened along the Street in NYC. Dex was a bopper, but from the mildest end of the stick. GENE AMMONS should have been booked into this package as well...+Willis Jackson, Eddie Harris, Griffin. To make a long story brief, what an incredible transition of jazz style variations was enacted and further delivered by the Texas Territorial Big Bands - such as Louis Trent, Lunceford etc. That s where these big-toned pioneers had their breaks in the depths of the depression when the black, field-working populace wanted to "go out and spend some cash .." It was called Saturday Nite Fish Fry ...acc to Louie Jordan, 4 one... ; but do you know what was The Midnite Ramble ...(Gatemouth told me..). The Northsea should be commended with the Presidential Unit Citation 4 its undelible contribution to produce this topnotch festival that will stay insurpassable despite the fact the legends are gone by 2024 (just Rollins, Donaldson, Person remaing of the tenors). Paul Ackett really did it with Wein ! Europe will remain in awe and in debt of gratitude as long as the sun keeps on shining on this hate-ridden, wartorn decrepit strange system of odd balances of a planet - that, once again, is about to lose it ALL ... 🇫🇮
Dex is not under rated. Staggering colossal giants on that stage that evening in Holland. The exchange’s during Lady be good made me smile from ear to ear.
Not by a long shot everybody knows how bad long tall Dexter Gordon was. He's the biggest influence on John Coltrane. Dexter Blows hot and cool, recorded at doo tone in Watts California. Rest In Power Giant!
Come al solito manca il mancano i minuti dei singoli pezzi! E questo è molto utile! Non sempre si riesce a decifrare la singole canzoni o pezzi!Meglio metterlo l'elenco dei pezzi che non!Chiaro?!!!

Yeah, would be great to see Benny Carter or Stan Getz or even Cannonball Adderly on this gig! What would Coltrane or Sonny Stitt or even Ornette Coleman have done in this setting?
no he's definitely Gene Ramey, and it's sad to see the narrator couldn't tell the difference between a bassist and another. look at the confused look on his face at 0:18.
Why does the presenter announce the bassist as George Duvivier? Is this a joke or does he not know George or Gene Ramey? What appears here as Love Affair is not a song but a group of songs within a romantic line, let's say ...
Some of the hottest tenor men ever to soak a reed! Dexter just towers over everyone. Met hi a couple times He's 6 foot 4 inches. If he didn't take up sax maybe he would have played for the Knicks.
Every note from them has meaning and purpose!!!!!!!
After a lifelong love for music, it was refreshing to find out I'm related to Illinois Jacquet
This whole video is so precious. I’m a tenor player and I hold a special place in my heart for all the elderly. Seeing these men past the prime of their life put my skills to shame is nothing short of thrilling.
L LO
Man! This is music made in heaven!!! When I go in the next life ,I wanna hang with these cats!!!!
Had to up-vote that even before they started playing. Classier times.
Heritage of the tenor - what else is there to say? Fantastic!
GIANTS! I fall in love with Dexter's tone every time I hear him.
So do I
Danox94 Love Dexter's tone and phrasing. Hearing a note or two, I know it's Dexter.
This is a great lesson learned., They make it seem so easy.... Speaking the language

Hank Jones feature (51:25) is a sheer delight. What a great master he is!

Agent: "How many sax players do you want to book for tonight?"
Gig organiser: "Yes."
just found the list of yours with correct titles, thanks for sorting it out
OMG @40:28 when the crowd started keeping rhythm for Cobb! He was electric!
So incredible Battle of Amazing Tenors and Memorabile Tenormen!!!
Really Wonderful and Amazing performance on stage!!!
Thanks for this incredible video!!!
My kind of music. Always a big fan of Gus Johnson, swings in a stylish way.
Will never be another sound like it!
Illness, spinal surgery, and a car crash made it difficult for Arnett Cobb to walk. But he had no difficulty kicking ass this night.👍
In Flying Home Dexter is beginning his solo by quoting from Illinois Jacquet original solo,(001:02) paying his respect to the master. Great to see the very underrated Budd Johnson. This is a REAL Supersax!

2 - 00:21:20 - Laura - Feature Dexter Gordon
3 - 00:28:34 - Darn That Dream - Feature Illinois Jacquet
4 - 00:33:05 - Yesterdays - Feature Budd Johnson

8 - 00:58:40 - Flying Home - Solo's Johnson, Gordon, Jacquet
9 - 01:11:09 - The Hagues Blues - Solo's Jones, Tate, Johnson, Gordon, Jacquet
03 is incorrect. Illinois Jacquet is featured on "Darn that Dream."
Very successfull concert, thanks a lot !
04 is Yesterderday, not Alone Together. Budd Johnson is great here !
mrpeebee1 Thank you those very handy time-slots. Cheers!
Love your You tube mouthpiece comparisons mrpeebee; Quite a collection of Links you have lined up there :)
I was waiting for someone to point that out

All super talented giants
Arnett Cobb....a major listen thru life's journey!
the piano intro (2-3 min) has some licks from "Swampfire" composted by Hal Mooney ,
Great stuff here. I'm a huge fan of Dexter (I'm just gonna nip off stage for a little 'pick me up)' Gordon et all but to hear Arnette Cobb swinging the blues .......what .a complete delight!
OH MY GOODNESS

a real jazz expirience
Essentially the Texas sax clan including Johnson and Ramey + Gordon and Jones !
You forgot to list "Darn that Dream" at 28:40. And "Yesterdays" at 33:10. Great music - where can you hear anything like this today?
Old masters at work
great bass player!
Saxiphonistes tènor hurleurs !
Arnett Cobb : un volume sonor sans égal !
Nice melodies
Muito Bom .. Parece que estive Presente ..
Parabéns a Postagem !

Dexter Gordon very under rated sax player

Dex!!!
Duvivier on bass... ahahah. It's Gene Ramey
Dexter's tone was second to none
Anybody know what horn Illinois is playing. Is it a Selmer with a larger bell than usual!
Ya, its looks like a big bell tenor in satin silver plate. I don't know what brand. I've seen him on video with a gold plated tenor before too.
@@tommybridges7143 Could it be a Marguax?
I saw him at the Village Vanguard in the early 80´s and the bell was big. But it was not a Conn.
Cobb was mic’ed far better than any of the others.
At 21'16 Dexter Gordon plays "Stardust
Dexter plays 'Laura' there.
I agree
Plays Laura with a huge tone and drive.
That is " Laura" not Stardust.
